Simple and effective synthesis methods for 2D/2D heterostructure and the synergistic effect of 2D/2D composites on microwave absorbing (MWA) performance remain to be further explored and investigated. Herein, 2D/2D MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructure was successfully synthesized in 30 min by a cost-effective and time-saving microwave-assisted hydrothermal method . The 2 H-MoS 2 nanosheets with a thickness of 5–10 nm were homogeneously anchored on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x layers, showing a tunable distribution density. Besides, the metallic properties of MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x and the strong interaction between MoS 2 and Ti 3 C 2 T x , were revealed by DFT calculations, which was employed to further understand the MWA mechanism in terms of molecular dynamics. The MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites with an optimum mass ratio of MoS 2 to Ti 3 C 2 T x (6:1) displayed the best MWA performance. The minimum reflection loss ( RL ) value of −41.5 dB was attained with a layer thickness of only 2.0 mm at 12.2 GHz and a 3.6 GHz maximum efficacious absorption bandwidth. The MWA mechanism of MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites was comprehended from multiple reflections and scattering effects, synergetic effects of conductive losses and attenuation capacity, and polarization relaxations. This work provides a facile method for the synthesis of 2D/2D heterostructure, and also provides a candidate material as potential microwave absorber.

P–n photovoltaic junctions are essential building blocks for optoelectronic devices for energy conversion. However, this photovoltaic efficiency has almost reached its theoretical limit. Here, a brand-new excitonic photovoltaic effect in 2D CsPbBr 3 /CdS heterostructures is revealed. These heterostructures, synthesized by epitaxial growth, display a clean interface and a strong interlayer coupling. The excitonic photovoltaic effect is a function of both the built-in equilibrium electrical potential energy and the chemical potential energy, which is generated by the significant concentration gradient of electrons and holes at the heterojunction interface. Excitingly, this novel photovoltaic effect results in a large open-circuit voltage of 0.76 V and a high power conversion efficiency of 17.5%. In addition, high photodetection performance, including a high photoswitch ratio ( I light / I dark ) of 10 5 and a fast response rate of 23 µs are obtained. These findings provide a new platform for photovoltaic applications.

Multi-physical fields driven catalysis for energy conversion has attracted increasing research interests. Introducing solar energy to boost the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of electrocatalyst via photothermal effect is an effective way to reduce energy consumption of water electrolysis. However, it still remains challenging to design advanced catalyst that can fully utilize the energy of each physical field to promote the kinetically sluggish OER. Herein, we report a two-dimensional (2D)/2D heterostructure constructed by integrating the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with high photothermal conversion efficiency on the surface of catalytically active nickel-iron layered bimetallic hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheet arrays. The 2D/2D heterointerface in rGO/NiFe-LDH enables the intense contact between rGO and NiFe-LDH, facilitating the generated local heat transfer and significantly reducing the overpotential towards OER under solar irradiation. The temperature of rGO/NiFe-LDH composite supported on carbon paper (rGO/NiFe-LDH/CP) rises rapidly from 30.0 °C to 58.5 °C after exposure to one-sun irradiation. Remarkably, the rGO/NiFe-LDH/CP exhibits a low overpotential of 197 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 for OER under solar irradiation. Furthermore, the Tafel slope of rGO/NiFe-LDH/CP decreases from 63.4 to 51.5 mV dec −1 with light irradiation, suggesting the integrated rGO photothermal layer not only reduce the thermodynamic barrier of OER but also accelerate the OER kinetics. In addition, the rGO can accelerate the charge transfer at the catalyst surface and increase the electrochemical specific surface area, all of which contributes to the enhanced electrocatalytic activity for OER. The solar-boosted electrocatalysis towards OER also shows good stability, indicating opportunities for practical application.

Constructing heterostructures has been a simple yet effective strategy for improving the photocatalytic performance of individual semiconductor photocatalysts. However, the poor quality of the contacted interface coupled with the narrow and overlapping light absorption scope between heterocomponents limits potential improvement. Herein, a 2D/2D rGO-Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructure with face-to-face compact contact interface and UV to NIR light absorption ability was synthesized to overcome the aforementioned limitations. The as-prepared 2 wt%-rGO-Bi 2 WO 6 with a high contact interface quality exhibits the highest kinetic rate of (5.53 ± 0.75) × 10 −2 L mg −1 min −1 toward tetracycline (TC) degradation, which is 2.4 times higher than that of pristine Bi 2 WO 6 and 2.1 times higher than that of the 2 wt%-rGO-Bi 2 WO 6 composite with a poor interface quality. Moreover, approximately 30% of TC can be mineralized with a 2 wt%-rGO-Bi 2 WO 6 presented system after 120 min. The subsequent Escherichia coli culture and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry were employed to detect the biotoxicity variation of degradation intermediates and the possible transformation pathways of TC, respectively. Finally, the reactive species trapping results indicate that photogenerated holes and superoxide radical anions play dominant roles during the TC degradation process. This work provides a facile and effective method to fabricate an efficient heterojunction photocatalyst for pollutant degradation .

Exploring highly active and stable oxygen evolving electrocatalysts is the key for electrochemical water splitting and renewable chemical conversion. RuO 2 is one of the benchmark oxygen evolving electrocatalysts, but remains challenging in high activity in all-pH electrolytes. Herein, we report a confined oxygenation strategy using the finite oxygen species from graphene oxide to synthesize two dimensional (2D) heterostructures of intrinsically defective RuO 2 nanocrystals uniformly grown on graphene (2D D-RuO 2 /G), showing ultrathin thickness of 9 nm, high specific surface area of 125 m 2 g −1 , enriched hydroxylated surface and notably intrinsic defective RuO 2 with low Ru–O coordination number of 5. Consequently, 2D D-RuO 2 /G exhibits a robust stability and an extraordinary oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance both in acidic and alkaline solutions, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at the overpotential of 169 and 175 mV, and a water oxidation turn over frequency of 1.07 and 1.25 S −1 at 270 mV, respectively, corresponding to 344 mV of total overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 in acidic and alkaline electrolytes , which greatly exceeds the state-of-the-art of pH-universal OER electrocatalysts. Theoretical studies indicate that intrinsic defective Ru sites can enhance the adsorption and accelerate the decomposition of hydroxyl groups to boost the OER activity. This confined oxygenation strategy provides the opportunities to construct 2D advanced defective OER electrocatalysts in all-pH electrolytes.

Two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has been widely explored as a promising photocatalyst for solar CO 2 conversion. However, rapid charge recombination and low visible-light utilization are severely detrimental to photocatalytic CO 2 conversion. Zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) heterostructures are considered the promising materials with size tunability and enhanced charge separation efficiency for photocatalysis. Herein, a 0D/2D heterostructure of oxygen vacancy-rich TiO 2 quantum dots confined in g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (TiO 2- x /g-C 3 N 4 ) was prepared by in-situ pyrolysis of NH 2 -MIL-125 (Ti) and melamine. Charge dynamics analysis by time-resolved photoluminescence (tr-PL) and femtosecond and nanosecond pump-probed transient absorption (TA) spectra revealed that charges transfer occured from 2D-g-C 3 N 4 to 0D-TiO 2 at an ultrafast subpicosecond time scale (<1 ps) through the intimate interface. The overall fast decay of the charge carriers was attributed to interfacial charge transfer, which was accompanied by recombination relaxation mediated by shallow trapped sites. Ultrafast interfacial charge transfer greatly promoted charge separation and electrons in shallow trapped sites were easily trapped by CO 2 . In addition, combining with the synergetic advantage of strong visible light absorption, high CO 2 adsorption and large surface area, TiO 2- x /g-C 3 N 4 exhibited a superior CO evolution rate of 77.8 μmol g −1 h −1 , roughly 5 times that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 (15.1 μmol g −1 h −1 ). This work provides in-depth insights into optimizing the heterojunction for robust solar CO 2 conversion.

Two-dimensional (2D)/2D heterostructured catalysts have garnered significant attention in photocatalytic environmental remediation due to their relevance in optoelectronic, as well as solar energy conversion systems. However, fast photocarrier separation of 2D/2D heterojunctions, made from the stacking of different layered materials through strong chemical bonds rather than weak van der Waals interactions, remains an unmet challenge. To address this, herein, a generation of 2D/2D p–n heterojunction photocatalysts, composed of BiOCl and HMoxNb3–xO8 nanosheets, was fabricated via in situ chemical absorption and hydrolysis strategies. This close heterojunction interface enhanced the separation and migration of photoinduced electron–hole (e––h+) pairs. As a result, the prepared ultrathin BiOCl/HMoxNb3–xO8 heterostructure catalysts demonstrated superior photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV–visible light, with the optimized photocatalysts (BiOCl/NbMo–10) achieving MO removal efficiencies 2.94 and 2.22 times greater than those of pristine BiOCl and NbMo–10 materials, respectively. Further, hydroxyl radicals (·OH), positive holes (h+), and superoxide anions (·O2–) were also confirmed to play key roles in MO removal within the photocatalytic system. This work offers insights into the rational design and in situ construction of high-performance 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

2D heterostructures provide a competitive platform to tailor electrical property through control of layer structure and constituents. However, despite the diverse integration of 2D materials and their application flexibility, tailoring synergistic interlayer interactions between 2D materials that form electronically coupled heterostructures remains a grand challenge. Here, the rational design and optimized synthesis of electronically coupled N-doped mesoporous defective carbon and nitrogen modified titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ) in a 2D sandwiched heterostructure, is reported. First, a F127-polydopamine single-micelle-directed interfacial assembly strategy guarantees the construction of two surrounding mesoporous N-doped carbon monolayers assembled on both sides of Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets. Second, the followed ammonia post-treatment successfully introduces N elements into Ti 3 C 2 structure and more defective sites in N-doped mesoporous carbon. Finally, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and theoretical calculation prove the synergistic coupled electronic effect between N-Ti 3 C 2 and defective N-doped carbon active sites in the 2D sandwiched heterostructure. Compared with the control 2D samples (0.87–0.88 V, 4.90–5.15 mA cm −2 ), the coupled 2D heterostructure possesses the best onset potential of 0.90 V and limited density current of 5.50 mA cm −2 . Meanwhile, this catalyst exhibits superior methanol tolerance and cyclic durability. This design philosophy opens up a new thought for tailoring synergistic interlayer interactions between 2D materials.

2D materials and their composites are promising energy storage candidates. In this work, 2D horizontal heterostructure comprised of Ni 3 S 2 /delaminated-Ti 3 C 2 , denoted as Ni 3 S 2 /d-Ti 3 C 2 , supported on Ni foam is prepared by a two-step method and used as binder free electrode for hybrid supercapacitor . The as-obtained composites are characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties of Ni 3 S 2 /d-Ti 3 C 2 on Ni foam (denoted as Ni 3 S 2 /d-Ti 3 C 2 /NF) are studied using cyclic voltammetry , galvanostatic charge-discharge analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy . It is found that the Ni 3 S 2 /d-Ti 3 C 2 /NF electrode exhibits superior capacitive performance with specific capacity of 2204 F g −1 at a constant current density of 1 A g −1 . A hybrid supercapacitor is fabricated by using Ni 3 S 2 /d-Ti 3 C 2 /NF electrode as positive electrode, active carbon (AC) coated on Ni foam as negative electrode and KOH aqueous solution as electrolyte. The Ni 3 S 2 /d-Ti 3 C 2 /NF//AC hybrid supercapacitor exhibits a maximum energy density of 23.6 W h kg −1 and a maximum power density of 4004.4 W kg −1 . The results supply new strategy for constructing MXene-based 2D horizontal heterostructure, and suggest that Ni 3 S 2 /d-Ti 3 C 2 /NF composite as a binder free electrode is an ideal candidate for supercapacitor applications.

1D/2D heterostructures, in particular those that consist of a 1D nanorod core and a 2D nanoplate (NPL) shell, enable the combination of the merits and mitigation of the demerits of distinct dimensionalities into one system, providing a new platform to study their intriguing properties. However, there is still lack of effective strategies to rationally integrate the components with different dimensionalities together. Here, we report a general seeded growth method for the construction of epitaxial 1D/2D heterostructures with a variety of compositional combinations, in which ordered 2D NPL arrays are vertically grown along the c-axis of 1D wurtzite nanomaterials, including II–VI and I–III–VI2 semiconductors. The loading densities of NPLs on the 1D nanomaterials are very high, up to 280 piece/μm. The same crystal structure of the grown NPLs and 1D seeds ensures the epitaxial growth relationship between these two materials. It is found that the secondary 2D growth mode is a kinetic-dominated process, in addition to the effect of the anionic sulfur precursor. The as-prepared 1D/2D CdSe/CdS heterostructures exhibit enhanced activity for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution compared to that of the single-component CdSe NRs and CdS/CdS homostructures. This work greatly enriches the variety and architecture of the available heterostructures and also provides a toolbox for exploring their promising applications.

The unique 2D/2D heterostructures can fully combine their respective 2D properties and exhibit enhanced performance due to its synergistic effect. However, how to effectively introduce other foreign 2D materials on the 2D MXene substrate, as well as research on their detailed synergistic effects, is still in lack. Herein, 3D conductive interconnected network with massive 2D/2D heterostructures in MXene-MoS 2 composites are constructed by a facile hydrothermal reaction , and the microwave absorption mechanism accompanying the synergistic effect is detailed analyzed. Impressively, the unique off-axis electron holography is firstly used to visually characterize the distribution of charge density at the 2D interface, which constructs an effective relationship between the charge density distribution at the 2D/2D heterostructures and the strength of the microwave absorption performance. In addition, the confined space provided by each independent accordion-like multilayered MXene facilitates the heterogeneous coupling between the layers to increase its dielectric loss capability. Accordingly, the MXene-MoS 2 composite holds the excellent microwave absorption performance accompanied by the superior reflection loss (RL) (−46.72 dB) and the distinct effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) (4.32 GHz) at only 2 mm thickness. This work refers an archetype for studying the synergistic effect between 2D/2D heterostructures.

Most methods for regulating physical and chemical properties of materials involve the breaking and formation of chemical bonds, which inevitably change local structures. Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets are critical for spintronic memory and quantum devices, but most of them maintain ferromagnetism at low temperature, and multiaspect control of 2D ferromagnetism at room temperature or above is still missing. Here, we report a nondestructive, van der Waals (vdW) interfacial magnetochemistry strategy for above-room-temperature, multiaspect 2D ferromagnetism regulation. By vdW coupling nonmagnetic MoS2, WSe2, or Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 with 2D vdW ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2, the Curie temperature is enhanced up to 400 K, best for 2D ferromagnets, with 26.8% tuning of room-temperature perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and an unconventional anomalous Hall effect up to 340 K. These phenomena originate from changes in magnetic exchange interactions and magnetic anisotropy energy by interfacial charge transfer and spin–orbit coupling. This work opens a pathway for engineering multifunctional 2D heterostructures by vdW interfacial magnetochemistry.
