Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial-based membranes feature attractive properties for molecular separation and transport, which exhibit huge potential in various chemical processes. However, the low permeability and bio-fouling of the MXene membrane in water treatment become huge obstacles to its practical application. Herein, a highly permselective and anti-bacterial 2D nanofiltration membrane is fabricated by intercalating a polycation of polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDA) into the Ti3C2TxMXene laminar architecture through a facile and patternable electrostatic assembly strategy. As a result, the as-fabricated Ti3C2Tx/PDDA composite membrane exhibits higher water permeance up to 73.4 L m−2h−1with a rejection above 94.6% for MgCl2. The resultant membrane simultaneously possesses good resistance to swelling and long-term stability in water environments, even after 8 h. Additionally, the Ti3C2Tx/PDDA membrane also demonstrates a high flux recovery ratio of nearly 96.1% to bovine serum albumin proteins after being cleaned. More importantly, the current membrane shows excellent anti-adhesive and anti-microbial activity against Gram-negativeEscherichia coli(E. coli) and Gram-positiveStaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus), with inhibition rates of 90% and 95% againstE. coliandS. aureus, respectively. This holds great potential for the application of the polyelectrolyte-intercalated MXene membrane in serving as a promising platform to separate molecules and/or ions in an aquatic environment.Keywords:Ti3C2Tx;MXene membrane;nanofiltration;two-dimensional membrane;anti-biofouling;PDDA

As a new type of separation material, two-dimensional membrane has attracted wide attention due to its special transport mechanism. However, due to the hydration swelling of montmorillonite nanosheets , there are still challenges in preparing two-dimensional membrane with stable channel structure and fixed interlayer spacing. In order to overcome the problems caused by swelling, this study used polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylic acid to stabilize the channel structure of two-dimensional membranes. Moreover, the crosslinking between Fe 3+ and montmorillonite nanosheets was proposed to fix the interlayer spacing of two-dimensional membrane. It is found that various polymers had different effects on the mechanical property of two-dimensional membrane. The addition of polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylic acid can significantly improve the tensile strength of the membrane. And the introduction of them reduces the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface, thus improving the stability of the membrane in water. In addition, the interlayer cations affect the stability of interlayer spacing of the membrane in water. After crosslinking the membrane with Fe 3+ , the interlayer spacing is fixed and can be maintained at about 0.94 nm in water for a long time. When a certain dosage of polyvinyl alcohol and PAA are added into the membrane and the crosslinking conditions are suitable, two-dimensional membrane has good selectivity to Li + and Mg 2+ in high Mg/Li ratio brine. Inspired by the natural ion exchange properties of montmorillonite, this study found a new method for inhibiting the hydration swelling of two-dimensional membrane and realizing precise control of interlayer spacing.

Two-dimensional (2D) membranes exhibit exceptional properties in molecular separation and transport, which reveals their potential use in various applications. However, ion sieving with 2D membranes is severely restrained due to intercalation-induced swelling. Here, we describe how to efficiently stabilize the lamellar architecture using Keggin Al13 polycations as pillars in a Ti3C2Tx membrane. More importantly, interlayer spacing can be easily adjusted with angstrom precision over a wide range (2.7–11.2 Å) to achieve selective and tunable ion sieving. A membrane with narrow d-spacing demonstrated enhanced selectivity for monovalent ions. When applied in a forward osmosis desalination process, this membrane exhibited high NaCl exclusion (99%) with a fast water flux (0.30 L m–2 h–1 bar–1). A membrane with wide d-spacing showed notable selectivity, which was dependent on the cation valence. When it was applied to acid recovery from iron-based industrial wastewater, the membrane showed good H+/Fe2+ selectivity, which makes it a promising substitute for traditional polymeric membranes. Thus, we introduce a possible route to construct 2D membranes with appropriate structures to satisfy different ion-sieving requirements in diverse environment-, resource-, and energy-related applications.

The singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 )-based nonradical AOP process, realized in carbon materials after nitrogen and metal doping, has drawn much attention in recent years. However, the exclusive generation of 1 O 2 in the specialized two-dimensional (2D) catalytic membranes and the associated contaminant degradation mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, a Fe-doped crystalline carbon nitride (Fe-CCN) material without additional nitrogen doping was developed to preferentially initiate 1 O 2 -based nanoconfined oxidation of organic pollutants in the 2D Fe-CCN membrane/PMS system. Density functional theory calculation revealed that the Fe-O-N configuration formed after Fe doping altered the electronic structure of Fe centers, enhancing PMS adsorption and promoting the thermodynamically favorable generation of the –O* intermediate, leading to fast and highly selective 1 O 2 generation. EPR characterization and ROS quenching experiment also confirmed that the Fe-CCN activated PMS, generating nearly 100 % 1 O 2 . The Fe-CCN membrane/PMS system exhibited excellent resistance to natural organic matter (NOM) interference and dramatically increased Bisphenol A (BPA) degradation kinetics, approximately 590 times faster than in conventional batch systems. Enhanced 1 O 2 exposure concentration within the Fe-CCN membrane nanochannels was supported by EPR data and 1 O 2 exposure simulations. Furthermore, The Fe-CCN membrane/PMS system showed wide pH tolerance, excellent pollutant degradation performance, and high stability. This work underscores the practical significance of 1 O 2 -based oxidation reactions in membrane-confined AOPs for the rapid and efficient removal of organic contaminants from water.

Two-dimensional (2D) membranes were constructed using porphyrin-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs), i.e., copper-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (Cu-TCPP), for efficient molecular sieving of dye/salt mixture solutions. These novel membranes contained a regular Cu-TCPP nanosheet filter layer fabricated by the vacuum filtration method to retain the oriented interlayer structure of the MOF material, resulting in a robust 2D membrane. The hydrated Cu-TCPP membrane with a thickness of 300 nm displayed high retention rates for dyes (90.1% for crystal violet (CV), 93.3% for Chrome black T (CB-T), 99.7% for Methyl blue (MB) and 99.8% for Congo red (CR); CV, Mw= 407.9 g/mol; CB-T, Mw=416.4 g/mol) with diameters approximately greater than 1.3 nm. A water permeance of 840.1 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and a CR (Mw= 696.7 g/mol) rejection rate of 99.9% were obtained with the optimal metal−porphyrin framework membrane (small lamellar dimension nanosheets) undergoing the cross-flow mode filtration of dye/salt mixture solutions for 24 h. More importantly, due to the abundant interlayers and regular surface nanochannels, the Cu-TCPP membrane exhibited a low salt rejection rate (0.4% for NaCl) and an outstanding CR/NaCl selectivity (as high as 249.5), which was more superior compared with that of other reported two-dimensional membranes. Additionally, the nanochannels of the membrane presented strong rigidity under pressure load as high as 0.4 MPa, endowing the membrane with high tolerance to shear stress and good antifouling performance after several fouling-cleaning cycles.

Two Dimensional membranes, which are usually constructed by inorganic nanosheets, have shown great potentials in efficient separation of low-molecular-weight chemicals. In this study, a novel type of organic–inorganic hybrid two-dimensional membrane is designed and prepared by co-assembly of a two-dimensional organic building block, Dopa thin-walled microcapsule, and a typical inorganic nanosheet, MXene. The introduction of MXene not only increases the distance between adjacent Dopa microcapsules and improves the solvent flux of the membrane, but also improves the structural stability by modulating the chelation strength of MXene with the Dopa microcapsules. The optimal Dopa/MXene composite membrane shows good performance in the field of organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), with a flux of 723 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 for methanol and reactive black rejection of more than 90%. All the Dopa/MXene hybrid membranes show better stability than MXene lamellar membranes and MXene/Dopa hybrid membranes (where Dopa microcapsule is inserted into MXene membrane), demonstrating the advantages of organic species in enhancing interfacial adhesion. More interestingly, since the chelation between Dopa and MXene mainly depends on the presence of TiO 2 in MXene, the oxidation of MXene, which often raises concerns of instability, herein is found to further increase the rejection and stability of Dopa/MXene hybrid membranes with only slight decrease of solvent flux.

Although 2D lamellar membranes exhibit significant potential for water purification, their tortuous and narrow interlayer channels, as well as the poor stability of the aqueous environment, constrain their application. Inspired by LEGO®'s module homogenization and precise interlocking structure, we propose the homogenization of membrane building blocks and a molecular interface unit design method based on subject–object recognition for precise and ordered assembly of 2D nanosheets. Ultrathin LEGO®-like membranes with high-density vertical slit fluid channels prepared by this strategy ensured accurate assembly to improve channel structural stability and permeation efficiency. The membranes exhibit an ultrahigh water permeance of 499.75 LMH bar−1, which is more than eight times that of the original membrane, and the permeability only decays by about 20% within 15 h. The superiority of this LEGO®-inspired design in creating highly regular parallel interlayer channels and vertical slit channels is crucial for permeability and stability enhancement. These membranes also show improved pressure and bending resistance, promising a future of diverse, high-efficiency, and scalable 2D membrane technology.
