Removal of V(V) From Solution Using a Silica-Supported Primary Amine Resin: Batch Studies, Experimental Analysis, and Mathematical Modeling

Xi Huang,Zhenxiong Ye,Lifeng Chen,Xujie Chen,Caocong Liu,Yuan Yin,Xinpeng Wang,Yuezhou Wei

Every year, a large quantity of vanadium-containing wastewater is discharged from industrial factories, resulting in severe environmental problems. In particular, V(V) is recognized as a potentially hazardous contaminant due to its high mobility and toxicity, and it has received considerable attention. In this study, a silica-supported primary amine resin (SiPAR) was prepared by in-situ polymerization, and the V(V) adsorption from the solution was examined. The as-prepared resin exhibited fast adsorption kinetics, and it could attain an equilibrium within 90 min for the V(V) solution concentration of 100 mg/L at an optimum pH of 4, whereas the commercial D302 resin required a treatment time of more than 3 h under the same conditions. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the resin under optimum conditions for V(V) was calculated to be 70.57 mg/g. In addition, the kinetics and isotherm data were satisfactorily elucidated with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Redlich–Peterson models, respectively. The silica-based resin exhibited an excellent selectivity for V(V), and the removal efficiency exceeded 97% in the presence of competitive anions at 100 mmol/L concentrations. The film mass-transfer coefficient (kf) and V(V) pore diffusivity (Dp) onto the resins were estimated by mathematical modeling. In summary, this study provided a potential adsorbent for the efficient removal of V(V) from wastewater. Keywords:pentavalent vanadium;removal;silica-supported resin;mathematical modeling

Biosorption of V(V) onto Lantana camara biochar modified by H3PO4: Characteristics, mechanism, and regenerative capacity

Kexin Chen,Danni Ma,Haoyang Yu,Shan Zhang,Barnabas C. Seyler,Zimo Chai,Shuming Peng

Biochar has been widely recognized as an environmentally efficient adsorbent for removing heavy metals. However, considering the weak adsorption performance of the original biochar to the oxygen-containing anion, the adsorption of vanadium by biochar has rarely been investigated. This study proposes that H 3 PO 4 activated biochar made from an invasive plant species growing near mines is a novel material to be investigated for V(V) recovery and reuse. As a noxious, invasive plant, Lantana camara L. (LC) has become widely naturalized around the world. Biochar was prepared from LC by pyrolysis at different conditions (200 °C, 350 °C, 500 °C, and 650 °C). The adsorption effect of biochar with and without P pretreatment on V(V) in aqueous solution was compared. The results show that biochar prepared from LC impregnated with H 3 PO 4 (MLBC) had the highest adsorption capacity at 500 °C, and the maximal adsorption capacity fitted by Langmuir model was 77.38 mg g −1 , which was considerably higher than that of untreated biochar (LBC, 5.89 mg g −1 ). The adsorption procedure was substantially fitted by the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic. Additionally, the interaction of V(V) on MLBC is pH-dependent, and slightly acidic conditions are more favorable for adsorption. The characterization results indicated that electrostatic interaction, complexation reaction, and redox reaction were the primary mechanisms. After three cycles of adsorption, the final maximal adsorption capacity of MLBC remained at 76.03% of that of the virgin sample, demonstrating that MLBC had a recyclable capability to eliminate and restore V(V) from aqueous solutions.

A high-efficient and recyclable aged nanoscale zero-valent iron compound for V5+ removal from wastewater: Characterization, performance and mechanism

Tingyi Liu,Peng Wang,Zhong-Liang Wang

An effective complex of nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) supported on zirconium 1,4-dicarboxybenzene metals-organic frameworks (UIO-66) with strong oxidation resistance was synthesized (NZVI@UIO-66) for V 5+ removal from wastewater. The results demonstrated that NZVI was successfully loaded on UIO-66 with a uniform dispersion, and then the composite was aged in the air which was named A-NZVI@UIO-66. V 5+ could be removed quickly and completely using A-NZVI@UIO-66 in a wider pH range except for the pH = 1 condition. The reaction between A-NZVI@UIO-66 and V 5+ was an endothermic process. Freundlich model with a better-fitted value showed the adsorption of V 5+ on A-NZVI@UIO-66 was multi-layer heterogeneous adsorption and the adsorbed amount of V 5+ was 397.23 mg V/g NZVI. Nitrate had a competitive inhibition on V 5+ removal by A-NZVI@UIO-66. Mechanisms of vanadium elimination from the aqueous phase by A-NZVI@UIO-66 included physical adsorption, reduction, and complex co-precipitation, particularly the reduction dominated. The subsistent Zr–O bond in A-NZVI@UIO-66 provided a possible double reaction path by playing an electron donor, storage, or conductor role. After acid leaching , A-NZVI@UIO-66 represented good reusability in the removal of V 5+ from the practical mine sewage.

Ultrasound enhances the removal of V5+ in wastewater by ball-milled zero-valent iron: Effects and mechanisms

Xiao Liu,Tingyi Liu,Peng Wang

Vanadium is considered to be a harmful industrial pollutant that poses a serious threat to health. In this study, the effect of ultrasonic-enhanced ball milling zero-valent iron removal of vanadium in wastewater was investigated and the basic mechanism of this process was elucidated. The results of the study confirmed that the ultrasonic intervention significantly accelerated the vanadium removal rate and greatly shortened the time required to achieve equilibrium. Under certain experimental conditions, the removal efficiency of vanadium under ultrasonic conditions is 99.1 %, which is 1.4 times higher than that of the traditional constant-temperature water bath device (70.86 %). Analytical techniques such as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy have confirmed that ultrasonic-induced cavitation and microjet phenomena actively stimulate the formation of more H radicals and Fe 2+ . The key role of Fe 2+ in the removal reaction was further explored and confirmed by a quenching experiment. Through fitting the experimental data of different isothermal adsorption models and reaction kinetics, it is concluded that the adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isothermal model. The adsorption process is dominated by chemisorption , and the maximum adsorption capacity is 153.033 mg·g −1 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and other analyses show that under the action of ultrasonic waves, V 5+ is rapidly reduced to its lower oxidation state through reduction within the first 10 min of the reaction. Secondly, as the reaction progresses and the pH value increases, electrostatic adsorption and coprecipitation are involved in the removal reaction.

Reduction of Pentavalent Vanadium via Enhanced Levels of Sulfhydryl by Elemental Sulfur Reducing Bacteria from a Stone Coal Mining Region

Zulv Huang,Xipeng Wei,Lijuan Zhang,Tao Chen,Yi Huang,Zhangwei Yang,Wanqing Zeng,Hongxing Chen,Lingtian Xie,Bo Yan

Microbial reduction of pentavalent vanadium [V(V)] to less toxic tetravalent vanadium [V(IV)] is associated with the biogeochemical cycling of sulfur. However, the capability of elemental sulfur-reducing bacteria (S0RB) to reduce V(V) in the presence of elemental sulfur (S0) remains largely unexplored. Herein, we systematically investigated the V(V) reduction capabilities and underlying mechanisms of Bacillus megaterium R01, a S0RB strain isolated from the stone coal mining region. Under sulfur-depleted conditions, B. megaterium R01 demonstrated limited reduction capacity (<54.3% removal efficiency for 200 mg/L V(V)). In contrast, S0 supplementation enabled near-complete V(V) reduction (97.6 ± 2.1%) even at elevated concentrations (400 mg/L), achieving a relatively low carbon consumption rate (TOC/V(V) of ∼0.6). Sulfhydryl (SH) compounds, reaching 424.2 ± 9.9 μmol/L within 5 days, were likely crucial for reducing V(V) to V(IV). This mechanism differs from that of other V-reducing bacteria. The transcriptome analysis revealed that the up-regulation of genes associated with sulfur metabolism, cysteine, and methionine metabolism in B. megaterium R01 is likely to contribute to its enhanced resistance toward V(V). Additionally, the biosynthesis of intracellular BSH in B. megaterium R01, and the extracellular SH groups (e.g., Trx and TrxR encode enzymes) play an irreplaceable role in reducing V(V) by B. megaterium R01. This study enhances our understanding of V(V) reduction in sulfur-rich environments and suggests a promising approach for remediating V(V)-contaminated groundwater, sediments, and soils.

Mechanistic elucidation and sustainable application of tartaric acid-mediated pentavalent vanadium reduction

Hao Peng,Jing Guo,Guixuan Jin,Jingjing Wang,Qiuyan Wu,Hongwei Liu,Aiyang Li

This study investigated the effectiveness of tartaric acid (TA) for the direct reduction of pentavalent vanadium (V(V)), a critical process in vanadium-related industries. Leveraging TA's carboxyl groups, which showed promise as reducing agents for V(V), the research systematically evaluated the effects of key parameters including reaction temperature, reaction time, H 2 SO 4 concentration, and TA dosage on reduction efficiency. Response surface methodology (RSM) analyzed parameter significance and interactions, while density functional theory (DFT) elucidated the molecular reduction mechanism. The process was further validated using an industrially sourced vanadium-rich solution. Results demonstrated that TA effectively reduces V(V) under elevated temperatures and TA dosage, achieving 100% within a short time under optimized conditions. RSM revealed all parameters positively influenced the reduction process, ranked by significance as: reaction temperature > reaction time > H 2 SO 4 concentration > TA dosage, underscoring the dominance of thermal activation. DFT analysis identified the molecular mechanism: the carbon atom within TA's carboxyl group (-COOH) donated lone pair electrons to V(V), facilitating reduction to V(IV). Successful application to the industrial vanadium solution confirmed TA's effectiveness. This study established TA as an efficient V(V) reducing agent, clarified its electron-transfer mechanism, and confirmed its dual role as both reductant and complexing agent.
