Uncovering Origin of Chirality of Gold Nanoparticles Prepared through the Conventional Citrate Reduction Method

Guiping Zhang,Qingyuan Liu,Chunli Xu,Baoxin Li

Chiral nanoparticles are one of the research hotspots in the field of materials science, chemistry, and biology. Understanding and controlling the chirality of nanoparticles is one key step toward their use, but the origin of nanoparticles’ chirality and its determinative factor are not well understood. In this work, we studied the chirality of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) prepared through the conventional citrate reduction method. Unexpectedly, it was found that small AuNPs (∼13 nm) exhibited opposite chirality to the large AuNPs (>30 nm). The origin of the AuNPs chirality was revealed by comparing the crystal structure between small AuNPs and large AuNPs. It was proposed that the lattice orientation of fivefold-twinned AuNPs may be responsible for the intrinsic chirality of AuNPs. This work provides a deep mechanistic understanding of the intrinsic chirality of the AuNPs and will boost the development of the structure-controlled synthesis and application of chiral AuNPs and other chiral nanomaterials. Furthermore, based on the unexpected size effect, chiral AuNP probes were rationally constructed to improve the precision of chiral recognition.

Synthesis of penta-fold twinned Pd-Au-Pd segmental nanorods for in situ monitoring catalytic reaction

Guangliang Niu,Fangyan Liu,Yun Yang,Yunzhi Fu,Wei Wang

Multimetallic nanomaterials have many applications. The controlled synthesis of multimetallic nanomaterials is highly desired. We report a study on using penta-fold twinned (PFT) Au nanorods (NRs) as seeds to synthesize PFT Pd-Au-Pd segmental NRs. The results show that the different crystal structures of seeds, I − and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) significantly affect the deposition of Pd on seeds surface. The PFT Pd-Au-Pd segmental NRs showed excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance and improved catalytic activity. Our research is of great significance for the synthesis of similar nanostructures, and we also shown that PFT Pd-Au-Pd segmental NRs might have potential applications in studying the process of organic reaction.

A five-fold twin structure copper for enhanced electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction to sustainable ammonia

Xiaoqing Yan,Ying Zhao,Yuzhe Zhang,Bowen Wang,Hanhong Fan,Honghui Ou,Xuelan Hou,Qizhong Huang,Huagui Hu,Guidong Yang

Utilizing N₂ from the air and water for the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction shows promise for NH₃ synthesis under mild conditions. However, the chemical stability of N₂ and the thermodynamic limitations of NH₃ synthesis hinder its effectiveness. Herein, we integrated a specially designed Cu nanowire catalyst with a five-fold twin structure (T-CuNW) into an electrocatalytic system, combining electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction with nonthermal plasma-assisted N₂ activation. This work achieved an NH₃ yield of 45 mg·mg cat. −1 ·h −1 and a Faradaic efficiency of over 95% at −0.5 V versus RHE after a 90-h stability test. In situ characterization revealed that the T-CuNW's twin structure plays a crucial role for the generation of a large quantity of H ads , essential for the hydrogenation of nitrate intermediates, particularly nitrite (NO₂ − ). This enhanced hydrogenation process significantly contributes to the high performance of the ammonia synthesis system.

Growth of Nanobipyramid by Using Large Sized Au Decahedra as Seeds

Guangju Zhou,Yun Yang,Shuhua Han,Wei Chen,Yunzhi Fu,Chao Zou,Lijie Zhang,Shaoming Huang

Au nanobipyramids (NBPs) are important nanostructures which attract much attention due to their unique structure, optical, and catalytic properties. The controlled synthesis of Au NBPs and corresponding mechanistic study are highly desirable for both fundamental research and practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy that large sized Au decahedra with well-defined shape act as seeds for growing NBPs. Furthermore, through using different sized decahedra seeds with edge from 25 to 49 nm, various sized NBPs can be easily prepared (longitudinal length from 110 to 210 nm; transverse length from 36 to 70 nm). Our study provides hard evidence for the growth of NBPs that they surely stem from the overgrowth on penta-twinned decahedra. Because these used large size seeds have well-defined shape and structure, the growth of the NBPs can be easily determined. Results show that the formation of NBPs is primarily determined by the molar ratio of Au3+ and Au seeds (MRAA). MRAA less than 4 only causes size enhancement and no significant shape change. In cases of MRAA higher than 4 and lower than 8, quasi-nanorods are produced. When MRAA range from 8 to 10, NBPs form and the yield is higher than 90%. The effect of reaction time and temperature also are vital to the growth of NBPs. These prepared NBPs are found to exhibit excellent surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance because of many present hotspots, edges, steps, and tips on their surfaces.

Au decahedra with High yield for the improved synthesis of Au nanobipyramids

Xiaoli Liang,Yinliang Yang,Chao Zou,Wei Chen,Hui-Xi Zou,Yun Yang

Penta-fold twinned (PFT) Au nanobipyramids (AuNBs) have outstanding optical properties compared with other PFT Au nanocrystals . The reproducible preparation of the seeds for synthesizing high quality of AuNBs still remains a challenging problem. In this work, we achieved the high-yield and reproducible preparation of small sized Au nanodecahedron (AuND) nanocrystals, and further used them as seeds in a controlled manner to synthesize monodispersed AuNBs and other shaped nanocrystals. The prepared AuNBs have better photothermal conversion performance than other shaped Au nanocrystals. This approach can promote the AuNB-based study and applications in optics, catalysis and therapy.

Chiral Molecule-Embedded Au@Ag Core–Shell Decahedrons with Enhanced Circular Dichroism

Changsheng Feng,Yu Tian,Lifang Zheng,Yue Chen,Feiyue Ge,Fang Cheng,Xue-Jun Wu

Chiral plasmonic nanostructures provide an effective way to enhance circular dichroism (CD) activities of natural chiral molecules due to the strong coupling effect between molecular chirality and the surface plasmon. Nonetheless, the impact of the nanostructure parameters on the CD enhancement and the origin of the CD response is still not well-investigated. Here, we report a seed-mediated growth method to synthesize discrete Au@Ag core–shell decahedrons in the presence of cysteine by using concave 5-fold twinned Au nanocrystals as seeds. The produced core–shell decahedrons display a strong CD response in the plasmon resonance region, and the maximum Kuhn’s dissymmetry value (g factor) can reach to as high as 5.8 × 10–3 as well as a large CD enhancement factor over 2000. Comprehensive experiments reveal that embedded chiral cysteine in the outmost layer of the Ag shell plays the paramount role in inducing the CD activity, which ensures the good stability of the CD response of the nanostructures under long-term storage. Our finding inspires the rational design and synthesis of plasmonic CD systems with strong enhancement of the CD activities and expands their potential applications in chiral signal amplification and biosensing.

Penta-Twinned Rh@Pt Core-Shell nanobranches with engineered shell thickness for reversible and active hydrogen redox electrocatalysis

Junlin Cai,Xinyan Liao,Pingting Li,Qiuxiang Wang,Hongpu Huang,Zixi Lyu,Jing Lin,Shuifen Xie

Surface defects on electrocatalysts can effectively reduce reaction barriers and facilitate the kinetics of hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions (HER/HOR). However, precisely engineering such surface structures remains a significant challenge. Herein, penta-twinned (PTw) Rh@Pt x core–shell nanobranches (NBs) with intense surface strains were facilely synthesized using PTw Rh NBs as the seeds for overgrowth of active Pt-shells. Through precisely regulating the supply of Pt precursor solution via a micro-syringe pump, the ultrathin Pt-shells conform to and replicate the twin defects of the PTw Rh seeds. Significantly, the shell thickness can be precisely controlled from 1.0, 2.0, and 3.8 to 5.0 atomic layers. Due to the integration of surface twinned defects, compressive strain and the core–shell ligand effect, these Rh@Pt x NBs exhibit superior hydrogen redox electrocatalytic performance compared to state-of-the-art Pt/C. Among the prepared materials, the Rh@Pt 0.83 NBs with a 3.8 atomic layer Pt-shell showed the highest mass activity (2.36 A mg Pt −1 ) and specific activity (6.55 mA cm −2 ) for HER at –0.07 V and presented the lowest overpotential (44 mV) at 10 mA cm −2 , less than half the overpotential of the commercial Pt/C (98 mV). In terms of HOR, the Rh@Pt 0.83 NBs showed a superior exchange current density (1.97 mA cm −2 ), approximately 7 times higher than that of Pt/C. Our work provides a facile method to synchronously engineer the Pt-shell thickness and surface defects of Rh@Pt core–shell nanocatalysts for the creation of robust and bifunctional hydrogen redox electrocatalysts.

Synergy between Structure Characteristics and the Solution Chemistry in a Near/Non-Equilibrium Oxidative Etching of Penta-Twinned Palladium Nanorods

Xiaoming Ma,Fang Lin,Xin Chen,Chuanhong Jin

Oxidative etching possesses an enriched flexibility and atomic-level accuracy in tailoring the size, morphology, surface structure, and composition of colloidal nanocrystals toward their catalytic and sensing applications. In this work, we choose one-dimensional penta-twinned Pd nanorods as a model system and apply liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM) to investigate the detailed nanoscale etching process under different solution environments, which are DI water/e-beam (weakly oxidative), sodium chloride (NaCl) solution/e-beam (moderately oxidative), and ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution/e-beam (strongly oxidative), respectively. Increasing the oxidative strength of solution alone accelerates the dissolution kinetics and drives the system from the (near)-equilibrium etching, where nanorods appear in flat and low-indexed ends (for DI water/e-beam) to nonequilibrium etching with slender tips formed as intermediate products (for FeCl3/e-beam). Under a nonequilibrium etching condition, both symmetric and asymmetric etching occurred, that is, the penta-twinned structure either retained (for symmetric etching) or dissolved to a fourfold-, threefold-, and twofold-twinned and single-crystalline structure (for asymmetric etching), depending on the structural defects-induced strain distribution. The formation of slender tips of different structures can be further understood via energetic analysis and strain relaxation. In particular, in situ LCTEM results were successfully reproduced by flask system-based etching experiments; hence, direct correlations were built between LCTEM and conventional colloidal etching reactions. This work comprehends the present understanding on the synergetic roles of structure characteristics and solution chemistry for the etching of multiply twinned nanoparticles toward their precise controlled synthesis and practical applications.
