Zirconia submicrosphere/potassium silicate metacoating with high irradiation stability for radiative cooling

Gong Hao,Wang Zhongyang,Song Xiaokun,Li Hongchao,Sun Kai,Zhou Xiao,Fan Tongxiang

Effective radiative cooling is crucial for reducing undesirable energy consumption caused by thermoregulation technology. However, conventional passive coolers still suffer from challenges such as vulnerability to harsh service conditions and suboptimal radiative cooling performance without guidance from optical design. Metacoating based on photonic structure design and all-inorganic components can overcome these drawbacks. In this paper, we fabricate a metacoating for radiative cooling, incorporating zirconia submicrospheres (ZS) within a potassium silicate binder. ZS with optimal diameters of about 500 nm were synthesized to efficiently scatter sunlight. The metacoating has a solar absorption ( α s ) of only 0.04 in the 0.25–2.5 µm range, and an infrared emittance ( ε ) of 0.91 in the 2.5–16.7 µm range. The low solar absorption is attributed to the high backscattering efficiency of ZS and their high-volume fraction, as confirmed by Mie scattering theory and Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulations, while the high emittance is driven by vibrational absorption from chemical bonds in ZS and potassium silicate. After proton and electron irradiation, the metacoating retains α s below 0.083 and ε above 0.910, indicating excellent irradiation resistance. Our findings highlight that metacoating utilizing ZS with a large bandgap and suitable diameters holds significant potential for advancing space radiative cooling technologies.

Controllable Synthesis and Crystallization of Nanoporous TiO2 Deep-Submicrospheres and Nanospheres via an Organic Acid-Mediated Sol−Gel Process

Ting Zhao,Ruifeng Qian,Yang Tang,Jing Yang,Yitao Dai,Wan In Lee,Jia Hong Pan

Although considerable progress has been achieved in the preparation of uniform hydrous TiO2 spheres (HTS) through the sol–gel process, there is plenty of room left in tailoring the size and morphology of HTS on the deep-submicron scale or even nanoscale since the diameters of the so far reported HTS are mostly on the (sub)micron scale (0.3–1.2 μm). Here, we develop a novel titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP)–organic acid (OA)–acetonitrile (ACN)–methanol (MeOH)–H2O system, which facilitates the control of nanoporous HTS to the range of 50–300 nm. The synthetic parameters including OA, (co-)solvent, concentration of precursor, and reaction temperature are comprehensively optimized, aiming at reproducible preparation and precise size control. Among the various OAs, n-valeric acid presents the best capability in controlling the spherical morphology and size uniformity. The synthesized amorphous HTS containing numerous micropores and mesopores show excellent hydrothermal stability and offer suitable self-template for the subsequent synthesis of mesoporous anatase TiO2 spheres (MAT) with a large surface area of 99.1 m2/g. The obtained TiO2 deep-submicrospheres and nanospheres with tunable sizes show great potential in various research fields.

Synthesis and photoluminescence properties of novel core–shell–shell SiO2@CePO4:Tb@SiO2 submicro-spheres

Kui-Suo Yang,Yi-Lian Li,Yang-Yang Ma,Li-Na Feng,An-Ping Wu,Yan Qiao,Jin-Rong Bao,Wen-Xian Li,Xiao-Wei Zhu,Ran-Bo Yu

A novel core–shell–shell SiO2@CePO4:Tb@SiO2 submicro-sphere was controllably synthesized by a bridging ligand organosilane HOOCC6H4N(CONH(CH2)3Si(OCH2CH3)3)2 (MABA-Si) connecting the silica core and rare earth ions. The as-synthesized samples were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and infrared spectroscopy (IR). It is found that SiO2@CePO4:Tb@SiO2 has a ∼25 nm outermost shell, a ∼4 nm intermediate shell, and a ∼200 nm core. SiO2@CePO4:Tb@SiO2 exhibits stable photoluminescence properties in aqueous solution: its photoluminescence intensity was unquenched even after 15 days. The core–shell–shell submicro-spheres were found to have better photoluminescence than the core–shell submicro-spheres because the SiO2 shell protected the phosphor materials and then improved its photoluminescence intensity and biocompatibility. A formation mechanism of the core–shell–shell SiO2@CePO4:Tb@SiO2 submicro-spheres was proposed. Thus, the low-cost preparation of the core–shell–shell SiO2@CePO4:Tb@SiO2 submicro-spheres could be rationally achieved using SiO2.

Synthesis, Modification, and Application of Hollow Mesoporous Carbon Submicrospheres for Adsorptive Desulfurization

Xiaoling Li,Haibo Zhu,Cong Liu,Pei Yuan,Zhangxiang Lin,Jiangtao Yang,Yuanyuan Yue,Zhengshuai Bai,Tinghai Wang,Xiaojun Bao

Hollow mesoporous carbon submicrospheres (HMCNs) have been successfully synthesized via a facile silica-assisted sol–gel strategy, which were further treated with KOH or/and HNO3 to obtain four adsorbents with different structures and surface properties for the removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT). KOH activation can effectively adjust the micro/mesoporous structure by increasing the number of micropores, and HNO3 oxidation can modify the surface properties by introducing oxygen-containing functional groups. HMCNs treated with KOH first and then HNO3 are the best for DBT removal with the adsorption capacity of 33.20 mg S·g–1, which is nearly 45% higher than that of activated carbon with the same treatment. Notably, the adsorption equilibrium can be achieved within only 5 min, much faster than active carbon owing to the existence of abundant mesopores favorable to the diffusion of DBT. The negative ΔG° from thermodynamics result suggests it is a favorable and spontaneous adsorption process.

Monodisperse pillar[5]arene-based polymeric sub-microsphere for on-line extraction coupling with high-performance liquid chromatography to determine antioxidants in the migration of food contact materials

Ruiyu Liang,Yuling Hu,Gongke Li

The monodisperse pillar[5]arene-based polymeric sub-microsphere was prepared by polycondensation of hydroxylated pillar[5]arene and cyanuric chloride through a one-pot reaction in mild condition. The preparation was realized by a simple two-step temperature-programmed process without heating operation. The obtained polymeric sub-microsphere exhibited monodisperse and regular spherical structure with uniform particle size distribution of 220–320 nm accounting for 94%. The prominent adsorption capacity of the polymeric sub-microsphere for antioxidants was demonstrated and attributed to the synergistic effect of the cladding interaction with the π-electron rich cavity and hydrophilic interaction with terminal hydroxyl on pillar[5]arene. Then the pillar[5]arene sub-microsphere was packed into a micro-column to realize effective on-line enrichment of antioxidants coupling with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The flow rate of extraction and desorption solvent, clean-up and desorption volume were assessed to optimize the method. The method showed wide linear ranges with R 2 greater than 0.9926, low limits of detection (0.030–0.20 μg/L) and limits of quantification (0.10–0.67 μg/L). The developed method was successfully applied to determine trace antioxidants in the migration of food contact materials with simulated solution, which demonstrated the promising potential of this method for practical analysis. Furthermore, the migration behavior of antioxidants from food packaging materials into different food matrix was also investigated.

Highly dispersed silver imbedded into TiN submicrospheres for electrochemical detecting of hydrogen peroxide

Chu Youqun,Huang Zhangkao,Wang Xinhang,Zhou Menglei,Zhao Fengming

We report the fabrication of silver nanoparticles evenly imbedded into TiN submicrospheres via one-pot solvothermal reaction and subsequent nitridation for electrochemical detecting of hydrogen peroxide. The precursor of TiO 2 submicrospheres and high dispersion of silver nanoparticles are regulated by the alcoholysis of tetrabutyl titanate and reducibility of enol in vitamin C. The ion nitriding promoted the conductivity and micro-nano porous structure on the surface of TiN submicrospheres, which increase the dispersity of silver nanoparticles and make contributions to avoid aggregations. More importantly, the electrochemical response of Ag-TiN submicrospheres to H 2 O 2 was remarkably enhanced due to the co-effects of Ag and N-doping. It provides a superior sensing performance for electrochemical detection of hydrogen peroxide at − 0.3 V with a high sensitivity of 33.25 μA mmol L −1  cm −2 , wide linear range of 0.05–2100 μM and low detection limit of 7.7 nM. The fabricated sensor also reliably applied in detection of H 2 O 2 in milk samples with good reproducibility, repeatability and storage stability.

Fabrication of monodisperse ITO submicro-spheres using l-Histidine-assisted one-step solvothermal method

Xiaoyu Zhai,Yujie Chen,Yunqian Ma,Yanchao Liu,Jiaxiang Liu

Indium tin oxide (ITO), a representative transparent conducting oxide (TCO), is widely applied in photoelectric devices. In this work, monodisperse ITO submicro-spheres have been prepared using one-step solvothermal method at 250 °C. l -Histidine (L-His), triethylamine (TEA) and dimethylformamide (DMF) were used as shape controller, base agent and solvent, respectively. Significantly, the effect from process variables on the size and shape of submicro-spheres was studied systematically. L-His was used to promote the formation of spherical morphologies. When reaction time was prolonged from 12 to 24 h, nano-size particles eventually grew into submicron particles. After adding L-His, the size of ITO particles became smaller and the crystal tended to sphere-shape from cubic-shape. Meaningfully, the effect from particle size and morphology plays a key role in the resistivity of resultant powders. Compared with the resistivity of larger particles with mixed morphology prepared without L-His, the one of well-crystallized sphere-shaped small particles prepared with L-His was lower. The range of resistivity was between 0.4 and 0.7 Ω cm when 0.05 M L-His was added. Moreover, uniform spheres with a diameter of 0.29 μm have been obtained by one-step solvothermal method with 1 M TEA and 0.05 M L-His, which have potential application in photonic band gap crystals.

Sonochemical preparation of mesoporous titania submicrospheres for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells

Xiao-Dong Qiao,Yi Li,Yi-Yi Liu,Guo-Lei Huang,Bing-Xin Lei,Wei Sun,Zhen-Fan Sun

Three-dimensional and thermally stable mesoporous TiO 2 submicrospheres are synthesized without the use of any surfactants via treatment with high intensity ultrasound irradiation for a short period of time. Techniques of X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy , nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and UV–vis spectrum are used to characterize the structure and morphology of the product. The specific surface area of the mesoporous TiO 2 submicrospheres is calculated to be 53   cm 2   g −1 . The UV–Vis spectrum shows that the mesoporous TiO 2 submicrospheres have high light-scattering ability and light absorption by dye. In addition, when applied as the light-scattering layer in dye-sensitized solar cell, an overall photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 7.92% has been achieved, significantly higher than that derived from P25 electrode (6.32%).

Preparation of hollow submicrospheres with ordered porous SiO2 shell and multiple AuPt nanoalloy cores and their high catalytic activity

Xinhong Qi,Xiangcun Li,Gaohong He,Yangzhi Zhu,Yurong Diao,Huilan Lu

Noble metal nanocrystals (Au, Pt or AuPt) with controlled compositions and nanostructures were embedded into hollow silica submicrospheres with highly ordered radial mesopores through a one-step sol–gel process. 2,4-Dihydroxybenzoic acid–formaldehyde (RF-COOH) resin submicrospheres were utilized simultaneously as a hard template to create hollow interiors inside the silica submicrospheres and as carriers to transport pregrown metal nanocrystals, including Au nanoparticle (NP), Pt NP, and AuPt nanoalloy, into the submicrospheres. Calcination removes the resin submicrospheres and causes metal nanocrystals embedded into the RF-COOH submicrospheres break into multiple smaller nanoparticles (2–6   nm) that are randomly dispersed in the hollow space of SiO 2 submicrospheres M@SiO 2 (M   =   Au, Pt or AuPt). The AuPt@SiO 2 submicrospheres showed good catalytic performance for epoxidation of styrene with the conversion and selectivity of 74% and 85%, respectively. The approach reported in this study could potentially be used to simplify the fabrication process of noble metal nanoalloys, which usually entails multiple steps and a previously synthesized hard metal template, and thus guide the design and creation of high-performance catalysts.

Synthesis of Hybrid Hollow Sub-microspheres Assisted by Pre-added Colloidal SiO2

Ting Huang,Chao Wang,Xinping Zhang,Chen Wang,Ailing Li,Dong Qiu

Graphical Hybrid hollow sub-microspheres (HHSs) were synthesized by using SiO 2 surfaces. In the presence of SiO 2 particles, the hydrolysis rate of 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) accelerated and the condensation rate of the hydrolyzed species decelerated. The preserved hydrolyzed species of MPS emulsified isopentyl acetate to form a steady O/W emulsion. HHSs were obtained by subsequent free radical polymerization and removal of the oil core. A novel method was developed to synthesize organic–inorganic hybrid hollow sub-microspheres (HHSs) through the addition of colloidal SiO 2 . The hydrolysis rate of 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) was accelerated by SiO 2 particles; meanwhile, the condensation rate of the hydrolytic species was decelerated. Thus, the hydrolytic monomers and oligomers of MPS were preserved as emulsifiers. These emulsifiers can then emulsify the isopentyl acetate (PEA) to form a steady O/W emulsion. The HHSs were produced by subsequent free radical polymerization and removal of the oil core. The hydrolytic MPS acted as emulsifiers and polymerizable monomers at the emulsification and polymerization stage, respectively. Thus, extra emulsifiers, co-emulsifiers, and organic monomers were omitted, which simplified the synthesis process. The good dispersion of HHSs in water and oil, as well as the EDX results, indicated the organic–inorganic hybrid structure of HHSs.

Enhanced proton conductivity of hybrid membranes by incorporating phosphorylated hollow mesoporous silica submicrospheres

Yuning Zhao,Hao Yang,Hong Wu,Zhongyi Jiang

Hollow mesoporous silica submicrospheres (HMSS) are prepared with one-dimensional hexahedral mesopores regularly aligned along the radial directions of the silica shells. Both the outer and the inner surfaces of the mesoporous shells, as well as the mesopore walls are phosphorylated (PHMSS). Moreover, the lumen of PHMSS serves as accommodation for amino tris(methylene phosphonic acid) (ATMP) with large amount of phosphoric acid groups. Phosphorylated submicrospheres (PHMSS-ATMP) with multi-functionalities are thus prepared. After incorporating PHMSS-ATMP into chitosan (CS) matrix, the hybrid membranes were fabricated. The water uptake, anti-swelling properties and the proton conductivities are all enhanced. Particularly, the proton conductivities are considerably elevated and the highest proton conductivity is 9.4×10 −2   S   cm −1 at 110   °C 100% RH for the membrane with 7.5   wt% of PHMSS-ATMP; the proton conductivities of CS/PHMSS-ATMP hybrid membranes at 80   °C and low humidity are increased by two orders of magnitude compared to the pristine CS membrane. The enhanced performance could be attributed to the proton conducting groups introduced by PHMSS-ATMP: –PO 3 H 2 groups are anchored on the surface of PHMSS-ATMP, and proton conducting channels could be formed by the mesopores of the silica shell, and the lumen could serve as acidic reservoirs.

Petaloid-shaped hierarchical porous carbon sub-microspheres derived from lignin for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes

Tong Lei,Xiaoqian Gai,Huijie Wang,Ming Yan,Runxian Wang,Farzad Seidi,Huining Xiao,Chao Liu

In this study, alkali lignin (AL), a byproduct of the sulfate pulping process, is utilized as a precursor to synthesize hierarchical porous carbon sub-microspheres (HALCS) with high specific surface area through high shear homogenization and chemically activated carbonization. The implementation of high-speed mechanical shear effectively reduces the particle size of lignin, leading to the formation of sub-microparticles. HALCS with distinct grooves and petal-like structures are obtained through a chemical activation-assisted high-temperature carbonization process. HALCS exhibits a hierarchical pore structure comprising macropores, mesopores, and micropores, with a specific surface area reaching 898.8 m 2 /g and a pore volume of 0.634 cm 3 /g, significantly surpassing alkali lignin-derived carbon (ALC) produced under similar carbonization conditions. In the 1 M H 2 SO 4 electrolyte environment, HALCS exhibits a specific capacitance of 433 F/g at a current density of 0.8 A/g. Moreover, a symmetric supercapacitor based on HALCS achieves maximum energy density and corresponding power density values of 17.2 Wh/kg and 100 W/kg, respectively, while maintaining excellent cycling stability undergoing 5000 charge-discharge cycles. Consequently, this straightforward and environmentally friendly synthesis strategy for alkali lignin-derived hierarchical porous carbon sub-microspheres opens up new avenues for the utilization of carbon materials derived from biomass in high-performance energy storage devices.
