The widespread occurrence of p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) in natural environments poses big threats to the biosphere due to the generation of toxic inorganic arsenic (i.e., As(III) and As(V), especially As(III) with higher toxicity and mobility). Oxidation of p -ASA or As(III) to As(V) followed by precipitation of total arsenic using Fe-based advanced oxidation processes demonstrated to be a promising approach for the treatment of arsenic contamination. This study for the first time investigated the efficiency and inherent mechanism of p -ASA and As(III) oxidation by Fe(II)/peracetic acid (Fe(II)/PAA) and PAA processes. p -ASA was rapidly degraded by the Fe(II)/PAA process within 20 s at neutral to acidic pHs under different conditions, while it was insignificantly degraded by PAA oxidation alone. Lines of evidence suggested that hydroxyl radicals and organic radicals generated from the homolytic O O bond cleavage of PAA contributed to the degradation of p -ASA in the Fe(II)/PAA process. p -ASA was mainly oxidized to As (V), NH 4 + , and p -aminophenol by the Fe(II)/PAA process, wherein the aniline group and its para position were the most vulnerable sites. As(III) of concern was likely generated as an intermediate during p -ASA oxidation and it could be readily oxidized to As(V) by the Fe(II)/PAA process as well as PAA alone. The in-depth investigation demonstrated that PAA alone was effective in the oxidation of As(III) under varied conditions with a stoichiometric molar ratio of 1:1. Efficient removal (> 80%) of total arsenic during p -ASA oxidation by Fe(II)/PAA process or during As(III) oxidation by PAA process with additional Fe(III) in synthetic or real waters were observed, mainly due to the adsorptive interactions of amorphous ferric (oxy)hydroxide precipitates. This study systematically investigates the oxidation of p -ASA and As(III) by the Fe(II)/PAA and PAA processes, which is instructive for the future development of arsenic remediation technology.

Arsenic aromatic compounds including p-arsanylic acid (pASA) are still widely used in a number of countries as the feed additives in animal breeding resulting in its entering the environment. Under the influence of oxidizing agents or UV radiation, pASA undergoes transformations leading to generation of inorganic arsenic species that are more mobile and toxic than organic ones. On the one hand, an approach based on the treatment of contaminated waters by UV irradiation seems perspective for their detoxification, but the feasibility of this approach depends on the composition of the products forming as a result of photodegradation. In the present work, a CZE was applied for the study of the pASA degradation process during stationary (308 nm) photolysis in the presence of Fe(III)-oxalate complex. A developed assay allowed controlling the parent compounds and also As-containing products of pASA degradation, presented mainly by arsenate and arsenite ions. It was found that the main inorganic derivatives of the pASA photolytic conversions are presented by arsenate and arsenite ions whose ratio depends on the initial amount of pASA and reaction conditions.

The mechanistic target of rapamycin (RAPA) complex 1 (mTORC1) - transcription factor EB (TFEB) pathway plays a crucial role in response to nutritional status, energy and environmental stress for maintaining cellular homeostasis. But there is few reports on its role in the toxic effects of arsenic exposure and the related mechanisms. Here, we show that the exposure of bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) to sodium arsenite promoted the activation of mTORC1 (p-mTORC1) and the inactivation of TFEB (p-TFEB), the number and activity of lysosomes decreased, the content of reduced glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) decreased, the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) increased, the DNA and chromosome damage elevated. Further, when mTORC1 was inhibited with RAPA, p-mTORC1 and p-TFEB down-regulated, GSH and SOD increased, MDA decreased, the DNA and chromosome damage reduced significantly, as compared with the control group. Our data revealed for the first time that mTORC1 - TFEB pathway was involved in sodium arsenite induced lysosomal alteration, oxidative stress and genetic damage in BEAS-2B cells, and it may be a potential intervention target for the toxic effects of arsenic.

Arsenic (As) contamination in groundwater is a growing global environmental issue, and effectively removing both As(III)) and As(V) from groundwater presents a significant challenge. In this study, a novel functional composite, FePd@ZIF-8, was synthesized using a two-step method for the simultaneous removal of As species. It was observed that FePd@ZIF-8 achieved removal efficiencies of 89.42 % for As(V) and 32.74 % for As(III), respectively. Characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of FePd@ZIF-8 and demonstrated that the valence state of As(V) and As(III) remained unchanged during the removal process. XPS and FTIR analyses revealed that the As species was adsorbed onto the surface of the material through complexation. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics indicated that the removal process was dominated by chemisorption. In groundwater applications, FePd@ZIF-8 could still achieve 85.62 and 70.46 % removal efficiency for As(V) and As(III) after four cycles, respectively. This study demonstrates that FePd@ZIF-8 holds significant potential for effectively removing As species from groundwater.

Arsenic (As) contamination in water supplies poses severe risks to human health and ecosystems, necessitating high-efficiency, regenerable, and cost-effective adsorbents. In this study, a bimetallic layered double hydroxide hybrid (MnFe-LDH/BC@H3BTC) was constructed using biochar (BC) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) as a ligand-regulated structure for enhanced arsenite [As(III)] removal. MnFe-LDH/BC@H3BTC exhibited 99.4% As(III) removal at pH 7 within 2 h equilibrium, showed superior adsorption capacity (2.99 mgg −1 ) compared to MnFe-LDH (2.2 mgg −1 ) and MnFe-LDH/BC (2.58 mgg −1 ). Characterization (XRD, FTIR, 2D-COS, BET, and XPS) revealed synergistic contributions from redox-active Mn²⁺/Mn³⁺ and Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺, ligand exchange with -OH and -COOH groups, and a BET surface area enhancement from 4.15 to 122.17 m 2 g −1 . Kinetic and isotherm modelling followed pseudo-second-order (R²=0.99) and Langmuir monolayer adsorption, confirming a chemisorption mechanism. HPLC speciation demonstrated time-resolved As(III) to As(V) oxidation. Real water application tests confirmed 2.82 mg g −1 As(III) removal, and regeneration studies confirmed high stability over five cycles with minimal metal leaching. This study provides a scalable, multifunctional strategy for As(III) remediation and contributes to understanding ligand-mediated redox-adsorption mechanisms in hybrid sorbents. Graphical The graphical abstract presents a visual summary of the synthesis, mechanistic pathways, and real-world performance of MnFe-LDH/BC@H3BTC for efficient arsenic removal from contaminated water. In the Preparation phase, manganese-iron layered double hydroxide (MnFe-LDH) is integrated with biochar and functionalized using trimesic acid (H3BTC), forming a porous and reactive hybrid structure. This composite material is engineered to provide abundant active sites for interaction with arsenic species. The Oxidation and Removal section details the mechanistic transformations involved in arsenic remediation. Arsenite (As(III)) undergoes oxidation to arsenate (As(V)) facilitated by redox-active Mn species, while multiple removal pathways electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, complexation, and hydrogen bonding-contribute to the stable immobilization of arsenic on the material surface. This segment depicts the transformation and sorption processes, emphasizing the synergy between functional groups and structural components. In the Performance section, experimental data show that MnFe-LDH/BC@H3BTC achieves rapid removal of As(III), with a sorption efficiency of 99.4% within just 2 h, outperforming the individual or partially modified components. The MnFe-LDH/BC@H3BTC composite demonstrates excellent potential as a practical and scalable solution for arsenic remediation in real water systems, offering a combination of rapid kinetics, high efficiency, and multifunctional removal mechani

Zirconium-based materials exhibit strong affinity for F − and As(III), but their practical application is hindered by hydrolysis susceptibility and limited adsorption capacity for As(III). In this study, we employed a ligand modification strategy, incorporating five organic ligands (acetylacetone, malonic acid, acetic acid, citric acid, and tartaric acid) to synthesize structurally stabilized zirconium-based adsorbents (PZA) via the sol-gel method. The adsorption performance and underlying mechanisms for F − and As(III) removal were systematically investigated. Our results demonstrate that ligand modification significantly optimizes the physicochemical properties of the materials, enhancing adsorption performance. The citric acid-modified adsorbent achieved a F − adsorption capacity of 79 mg/g, a 1.4-fold increase over unmodified materials, whereas the acetylacetone-modified adsorbent reached an As(III) adsorption capacity of 258 mg/g, surpassing most reported materials. Density functional theory calculations reveal that ligands improve adsorption through dual mechanisms of “geometrical configuration regulation” and “electronic effect”: (1) Ligand modification alters the electrostatic potential distribution on the material surface, expanding positive and negative charge regions by 29–42 % and 20–26 %, respectively, thereby strengthening electrostatic interactions with pollutants; (2) Frontier orbital analysis indicates that ligands reduce the HOMO-LUMO energy gap (ΔE decreased by 3.0–24.6 %), enhancing electron transfer capability; (3) Binding energy calculations confirm the spontaneity of the adsorption process. This study provides a novel strategy for the rational design of high-performance environmental functional materials through precise ligand engineering.

Inorganic arsenic and organochlorines are frequently co-occurring contaminants in anoxic groundwater environments, and the bioremediation of their composite pollution has long been a rigorous predicament. Currently, the dechlorination behaviors and stress responses of microbial dechlorination consortia to arsenic are not yet fully understood. This study assessed the reductive dechlorination performance of a Dehalococcoides -bearing microcosm DH under gradient concentrations of arsenate [As(V)] or arsenite [As(III)] and investigated the response patterns of different functional microorganisms. Our results demonstrated that although the dechlorination rates declined with increasing arsenic concentrations in both As(III/V) scenarios, the inhibitory impact was more pronounced in As(III)-amended groups compared to As(V)-amended groups. Moreover, the vinyl chloride (VC)-to-ethene step was more susceptible to arsenic exposure compared to the trichloroethene (TCE)-to-dichloroethane (DCE) step, while high levels of arsenic exposure [e.g. As(III) > 75 μM] can induce significant accumulation of VC. Functional gene variations and microbial community analyses revealed that As(III/V) affected reductive dechlorination by directly inhibiting organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) and indirectly inhibiting synergistic populations such as acetogens. Metagenomic results indicated that arsenic metabolic and efflux mechanisms were identical among different Dhc strains, and variations in arsenic uptake pathways were possibly responsible for their differential responses to arsenic exposures. By comparison, fermentative bacteria showed high potential for arsenic resistance due to their inherent advantages in arsenic detoxification and efflux mechanisms. Collectively, our findings expanded the understanding of the response patterns of different functional populations to arsenic stress in the dechlorinating consortium and provided insights into modifying bioremediation strategies at co-contaminated sites for furtherance.

The bioaccessibility and speciation of arsenic (As) in rice grains have been investigated by the physiologically based extraction test (PBET) method. A total of 42 rice samples were collected from Hunan Province, a typical mine-impacted province in China. The bioaccessibility in the gastrointestinal tract was 71.7 ± 13.5% for the collected rice grains. Arsenite [As(III)] was the predominant As species in the simulated gastric and gastrointestinal solutions, followed by dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), arsenate [As(V)] and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA). The bioaccessible As(V) was irrelevant to As(V) in the rice grains, suggesting that interconversion between As(V) and other species was occurred in the simulated gastrointestinal tract. Monte-Carlo simulation was introduced to assess the health risk from exposure to inorganic As. The average values for target hazard quotient (THQ) and bioaccessible THQ were 2.704 and 1.637, respectively. The inclusion of bioaccessibility reduced the probability of non-carcinogenic health risk from 97.32% to 76.86%.

Arsenic pollution in natural water is a worldwide problem. In this work, a resin-based hydrated iron oxide (D303-HFO) adsorbent was designed to remove arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)) in the groundwater. The structure and morphology of the D303-HFO adsorbent were characterized by FTIR, XRD , SEM and TEM tests. The specific surface area, pore volume and pore size increased with the incorporation of HFO nanoparticles in the resin. In addition, the effects of pH and coexisting ions on the arsenic removal efficiency were investigated. Results indicated that the D303-HFO had efficient removal performance for arsenic in the pH range of 3–9 and showed high selectivity for As(V) and As(III) under the influence of competitive ions. The adsorption kinetics study confirmed that the adsorption process was dominated by chemisorption , and the adsorption isotherms of As(V) and As(III) by D303-HFO fitted the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption reaction was spontaneous and exothermic. Moreover, the regeneration and stability experiment indicated that the D303-HFO adsorbent was super reusable after five consecutive cycles and could be put into service stably and permanently. The fixed-bed column test showed that the water sample containing As(V) and As(III) was treated with a volume of 900BV and 1100BV, respectively. After the treatment, the effluent concentration reached the drinking water standard stipulated by WHO.
