Electrocatalytic performances of multi-walled carbon nanotubes chemically modified by metal phthalocyanines in Li/SOCl2 batteries

Weixing Yang,Ronglan Zhang,Kai Luo,Weiping Zhang,Jianshe Zhao

A series of metal 2,9,16,23-tetraaminophthalocyanines [TAPcM, M = Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Fe(II), Mn(II)] have been prepared and used to chemically modify fluorinated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (F-MWCNTs). The generated composites TAPcM/MWCNTs were characterized by IR, UV-Vis and XRD. The electrocatalytic activity of all the composites was evaluated by adding them into the electrolyte of the Li/SOCl2 battery and taking cyclic voltammograms in simulated circumstances. The results show that the composites can dramatically improve the capacity of the battery, and their electrocatalytic performance strongly depends on the metal phthalocyanine species. The order of the electrocatalytic activity of 2,9,16,23-TAPcM and 2,9,16,23-TAPcM/MWCNTs with different metal ions in the center is Mn(II) > Ni(II) > Zn(II) > Fe(II) > Cu(II). The excellent electrocatalytic performance of the modified F-MWCNTs may be due to the fine synergistic effect between the metal phthalocyanines and the MWCNTs.

Catalytic activity of a series of subphthalocyanines in the electrolyte of Li/SOCl2 battery

Guo Rongrong,Dong Zhen,Xu Bei,Song Chao,Li Zhuo,Zhao Jianshe,Zhang Shichao

A series of subphthalocyanines with different substituents (RPhO-BSubPc(COOCH 3 ) 3 ) have been synthesized and used as catalysts to catalyze lithium/thionyl chloride (Li/SOCl 2 ) battery. All the compounds are structurally characterized by IR, UV, and element analysis. After adding RPhO-BSubPc(COOCH 3 ) 3 into the battery’s electrolyte, the energy and the capacity of the battery are increased by approximately 3.27–40.6 and 10.9–53.2 % than that of the battery in the absence of them. In addition, a three-step hypothetical mechanism is figured out to explain the complex catalytic process. By comparing the images of SEM, it is found that the addition of catalysts makes the lithium chloride layer looser, which is conducive to the transfer of electrons. Moreover, the hypothetical mechanism is confirmed by the results of cyclic voltammetry.

Improving electrocatalytic activity of fluorinated multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified with tetraaminophthalocyanines for lithium/thionyl chloride battery

Zhang Ying,Wang Tingli,Zhang Ronglan,Yang Weixing,Luo Kai,Zhang Weiping,Zhao Jianshe

A series of metal 1, 8, 15, 22-tetraaminophthalocyanines [1, 8, 15, 22-TAPcM, M = Mn(II), Fe(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)] are synthesized and used to chemically modify fluorinated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (F-MWCNTs) with the formation of certain chemical bonds on the surface of carbon nanotubes, and the corresponding composites 1, 8, 15, 22-TAPcM/MWCNTs are obtained. The electrocatalytic activities of the samples are studied by adding them into lithium/thionyl chloride (Li/SOCl 2 ) batteries. The results indicate that the composites 1, 8, 15, 22-TAPcM/MWCNTs can improve the discharge voltage and lengthen the discharge time of the batteries much more than 1, 8, 15, 22-TAPcM, and the order of the electrocatalytic activities of 1, 8, 15, 22-TAPcM/MWCNTs and 1, 8, 15, 22-TAPcM with different metal ions in center is both Mn(II) > Ni(II) > Zn(II) > Fe(II) > Cu(II). It is also found that the discharge time and maximal discharge voltage and capacity for the battery contains 1, 8, 15, 22-TAPcMn/MWCNTs can be improved by 68.19%, 9.41%, and 82.6%, respectively.

Synthesis and performance evaluation of binuclear metal phthalocyanines as high-efficiency electrocatalysts for Li/SOCl2 batteries

Yuanyuan Su,Ying Zhang,Ronglan Zhang,Fei Yang,Jianshe Zhao

Two series of binuclear metal phthalocyanine complexes M2(PcTN)2Nap and M2(PcTA)2Nap (M = Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Cu2+) were designed and synthesized through the liquid solvent method and amination reaction. Elemental analysis, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy were applied to characterize the compounds. To evaluate their catalytic performance, all the compounds were respectively added into the electrolyte of Li/SOCl2 battery systems as well as three-electrode systems for cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. The research studies indicate that the average discharge voltage and discharge time of the battery could be effectively enhanced by 0.2440 V and 810.7 s when compared with the battery in the absence of the compounds. As for capacities of the batteries containing catalysts, they were also found to have an improvement of 51.78–91.62%. Among the effects of diverse metal ions on the catalytic performance of phthalocyanines, the complexes whose center metal ions were Mn2+ or Co2+ exhibited relatively high catalytic performance. Meanwhile, combined with experimental results of CV analyses, the suggested catalytic mechanism of binuclear phthalocyanines for catalyzing Li/SOCl2 batteries had been proposed.

Transforming a Primary Li-SOCl2 Battery into a High-Power Rechargeable System via Molecular Catalysis

Guodong Chen,Wenda Li,Xiaofan Du,Chen Wang,Xuelian Qu,Xiangyu Gao,Shanmu Dong,Guanglei Cui,Liquan Chen

Li-SOCl2 batteries possess ultrahigh energy densities and superior safety features at a wide range of operating temperatures. However, the Li-SOCl2 battery system suffers from poor reversibility due to the sluggish kinetics of SOCl2 reduction during discharging and the oxidation of the insulating discharge products during charging. To achieve a high-power rechargeable Li-SOCl2 battery, herein we introduce the molecular catalyst I2 into the electrolyte to tailor the charging and discharging reaction pathways. The as-assembled rechargeable cell exhibits superior power density, sustaining an ultrahigh current density of 100 mA cm–2 during discharging and delivering a reversible capacity of 1 mAh cm–2 for 200 cycles at a current density of 2 mA cm–2 and 6 mAh cm–2 for 50 cycles at a current density of 5 mA cm–2. Our results reveal the molecular catalyst-mediated reaction mechanisms that fundamentally alter the rate-determining steps of discharging and charging in Li-SOCl2 batteries and highlight the viability of transforming a primary high-energy battery into a high-power rechargeable system, which has great potential to meet the ever-increasing demand of energy-storage systems.

Synthesis and Characterization of High Heat Resistant Hydroxyl Silicone Oil with Boron and Sulfoxide in Backbone

Ren Fengmei,Xu Qiang,Zhou Zhengfa,Xu Weibing,Ma Haihong

High heat resistant hydroxyl silicone oil with boron and sulfoxide in backbone (HSOBS) was synthesized by copolymerizing of hydroxyl polyborosiloxane oil (HPBSO) with thionyl chloride (SOCl 2 ). The molecular structure of HSOBS was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopies (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-, 11 B- and 29 Si-NMR) spectroscopies. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results showed that incorporation of sulfoxide group in backbone obviously improved the heat resistant of HSOBS. The temperature at 5% mass loss (T 5 ) and maximum decomposition rate (T max ) of HSOBS-1 were 490 °C and 590 °C, respectively. The thermal degradation activation energy (E a ) was systematically studied by the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method, and the E a of HSOBS was higher than that of HPBSO.
