I-III-VI 2 compounds have shown great interests in the application of functional semiconductors. Among them, Cu(In,Ga)S 2 has been a promising candidate due to its excellent optoelectronic properties. Although the polymorphs of Cu(In,Ga)S 2 have been attracted extensive attentions, the efforts to developing the methodologies for phase-controlled synthesis of them are rare. In this paper, we reported a phase-selective synthesis of CIGS nanoparticles with metastable phases via simply changing the composition of solvents. For the wet chemistry synthesis, the microstructure of the initial nuclei is decisive to the crystal structure of final products. In the formation of Cu(In,Ga)S 2 , the solvent environment is the key factor, which could affect the coordination of monomers and influence the thermodynamic conditions of Cu-S nucleation. Moreover, wurtzite and zincblende Cu(In,Ga)S 2 nanoparticles are selectively prepared by choosing pure en or its mixture with deionized water as reaction solvent. The as-synthesized wurtzite Cu(In,Ga)S 2 possess a band gap of 1.6 eV and a carrier mobility of 4.85 cm 2 /Vs, which indicates its potential to construct a heterojunction with hexagonal-structured CdS for solar cells.

Materials science exploits only properties that are available at ambience. Therefore, although high-pressure changes the physical state of all condensed matter, most of the extraordinary properties discovered vanish after decompression and cannot be utilized. Here, we demonstrate sublattice decoupling in a mixed-anion chalcohalide Rb 6 Re 6 S 8 I 8 upon compression, in which the [Rb 6 I 2 ] 4+ framework is soft and plastic, while the [Re 6 S 8 I 6 ] 4- clusters are hard and elastic. This discrepancy in the rigidity allows the applied pressure to selectively amorphize the framework while maintaining the ordered state in the cluster, leading to intriguing photocurrent generation and enhancement upon compression. These high-pressure properties are retained at ambience, permitting scalable synthesis of the decompressed samples using a large-volume press, followed by further fabrication into self-powered broadband photodetectors with a response time of ~ 10 2 μs and a specific detectivity of ~ 10 11 Jones. This study subverts the stereotype that pressure engineering is hardly to be employed for device applications.

Electrocatalytic acetone hydrogenation into high-value alcohols offers a sustainable alternative to thermal methods. However, developing non-noble metal catalysts with superior performance for electrocatalytic acetone hydrogenation remains challenging. Two-dimensional non-noble metal structure with metastable-phase active sites is promising due to its high-energy structure and unique electronic environment. However, its precise synthesis remains a great challenge. In this work, we report a two-dimensional metastable hexagonal close-packed phase nickel nanosheets (hcp Ni NSs) with a space group of P6 3 /mmc. In the electrocatalytic acetone hydrogenation, it achieves 95.0 % acetone conversion with 100 % isopropanol selectivity. Notably, in the scale-up experiment, the hcp Ni NSs also exhibit 11.51 g g cat -1 h -1 isopropanol production rate at a current density of −250 mA cm -2 . Furthermore, this catalyst is widely applicable to various carbonyl compounds. Mechanism study shows that hcp Ni NSs enable strong acetone adsorption and rapid isopropanol desorption.

Non-noble transition metal oxides are abundant in nature. However, they are widely regarded as catalytically inert for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their scarce active electronic states near the Fermi-level. How to largely improve the HER activity of these kinds of materials remains a great challenge. Herein, as a proof-of-concept, we design a non-solvent strategy to achieve phosphate substitution and the subsequent crystal phase stabilization of metastable β-NiMoO 4 . Phosphate substitution is proved to be imperative for the stabilization and activation of β-NiMoO 4 , which can efficiently generate the active electronic states and promote the intrinsic HER activity. As a result, phosphate substituted β-NiMoO 4 exhibits the optimal hydrogen adsorption free energy (−0.046 eV) and ultralow overpotential of −23 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH for HER. Especially, it maintains long-term stability for 200 h at the large current density of 1000 mA cm −2 with an overpotential of only −210 mV. This work provides a route for activating transition metal oxides for HER by stabilizing the metastable phase with abundant active electronic states.
