Ultralight and Flexible Subnanowire Aerogels for Intrinsically Hydrophobic Thermal Insulation

Yuhan Sheng,Yi Zhang,Zhifang Sun

Aerogels are regarded as the next generation of thermal insulators; however, conventional aerogels suffer from issues such as brittleness, low moisture resistance, and a complex production process. Subnanowires (SNWs) are emerging materials known for their exceptional flexibility, toughness, intrinsic hydrophobicity, and gelling capabilities, making them ideal building blocks for flexible, tough, hydrophobic, and thermally insulating aerogels. Herein, we present a simple and scalable strategy to construct SNW aerogels by freeze-drying hydroxyapatite (HAP) SNW dispersions in cyclohexane. The resulting aerogels consist of three-dimensional porous flakes composed of thin layers of SNW bundles. They exhibit numerous outstanding properties, including ultralow density (12.33 mg·cm–3), high porosity (99.15%), remarkable flexibility and toughness, and excellent thermal insulation properties (27.53 mW·m–1·K–1). Because the HAP SNWs consist of hydroxyapatite cores capped with hydrocarbon chains, the aerogels demonstrate intrinsic hydrophobicity (138° water contact angle) and superior thermal stability compared to polymer foams. Furthermore, the HAP SNW aerogels can effectively shield against infrared radiation due to their low thermal conductivity. This work suggests that SNWs can serve as superior building blocks for flexible, tough, and intrinsically hydrophobic aerogels, paving the way for future applications in thermal insulation.

Subnanometer high-entropy alloy nanowires enable remarkable hydrogen oxidation catalysis

Zhan Changhong,Xu Yong,Bu Lingzheng,Zhu Huaze,Feng Yonggang,Yang Tang,Zhang Ying,Yang Zhiqing,Huang Bolong,Shao Qi,Huang Xiaoqing

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with unique physicochemical properties have attracted tremendous attention in many fields, yet the precise control on dimension and morphology at atomic level remains formidable challenges. Herein, we synthesize unique PtRuNiCoFeMo HEA subnanometer nanowires (SNWs) for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). The mass and specific activities of HEA SNWs/C reach 6.75 A mg Pt+Ru −1 and 8.96 mA cm −2 , respectively, which are 2.8/2.6, 4.1/2.4, and 19.8/18.7 times higher than those of HEA NPs/C, commercial PtRu/C and Pt/C, respectively. It can even display enhanced resistance to CO poisoning during HOR in the presence of 1000 ppm CO. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the strong interactions between different metal sites in HEA SNWs can greatly regulate the binding strength of proton and hydroxyl, and therefore enhances the HOR activity. This work not only provides a viable synthetic route for the fabrication of Pt-based HEA subnano/nano materials, but also promotes the fundamental researches on catalysis and beyond.

Self-Adaptive MoO3−x Subnanometric Wires Incorporated Scaffolds for Osteosarcoma Therapy and Bone Regeneration

Ying Fang,Yang Yu,Xiaoyan Jiang,Peilai Liu,Yu Chen,Wei Feng

Residual tumor cells and bone tissue defects are two critical challenges in clinical osteosarcoma treatment. Herein, a subnanomedicine concept is proposed by developing a self-adaptive functional tissue engineering scaffold constructed by integrating MoO 3− x subnanometric wires onto 3D printing bioactive glass scaffolds. The MoO 3− x subnanometric wires are synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal method, which aggregate in an acidic tumor microenvironment and react with hydrogen peroxide to produce reactive oxygen species for specific chemodynamic therapy. However, they can degrade rapidly under physiological conditions without causing toxicity. Moreover, self-adaptively enhanced photothermal conversion enables tumor-targeting photothermal therapy while enhancing chemodynamic therapy. Additionally, the Mo 5+ -Mo 6+ transition enables lipid peroxide accumulation and glutathione depletion, thereby resulting in the deactivation of glutathione peroxidase 4 protein and ferroptosis through Western blot analysis, confocal laser scanning microscopy observation, and mRNA transcriptome analysis. In addition to its robustness against osteosarcoma, the constructed scaffolds can stimulate rat bone mesenchymal stem cell differentiation and proliferation as well as promote osteogenesis in bone defects. Therefore, this multifunctional scaffold not only validates the subnanomedicine concept but also provides a promising clinical strategy for bone tissue engineering.
