Hysteresis loss and relaxation loss are the two dominant heating mechanisms of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in an alternating magnetic field (AMF). In magnetic induction hyperthermia, heating efficiency is one of the crucial factors. It is proposed that the MNPs with a dominant heating mechanism of relaxation loss will exhibit a higher heating efficiency. However, the relative experiments supporting the proposal is still absent due to the difficulty of obtaining the MNPs with the same components and similar morphology but different dominant heating mechanism. Here, the post-processing method of calcination is employed to change the cation distribution of the MNPs ( Fe 3 O 4 and Zn 0.54 Co 0.46 Cr 0.6 Fe 1.4 O 4 ), so as to obtain the MNPs with similar morphology but different dominant heating mechanism. The magnetic heating experiments were conducted to examine the heating efficiency. The results suggest that the MNPs with relaxation loss have a higher heating efficiency under the investigated AMF.

The effects of different intensities of low-frequency alternating magnetic fields (LF-AMF) modification on gel characteristics, rheology, water distribution, secondary structure and microstructure were investigated. The results showed that application of LF-AMF exhibited a significant improvement of the water-holding capacity, gel strength, color, textural properties and acceptability of low-salt pork batter gels ( P < 0.05). When the LF-AMF intensity reached 0.6 mT, the low-salt pork batters had the highest WHC, L* , gel strength, hardness, springiness, gumminess and chewiness and acceptability ( P < 0.05). During the temperature (sample heated from 20 to 80 °C) and frequency (0–10 Hz) sweep, the storage modulus G′ first increased and then decreased with increasing of LF-AMF intensity. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) showed that LF-AMF at an intensity of 0.6 mT shortened the T 2 relaxation time of pork batter gel and increased the proportion of immobilized water. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that LF-AMF treatment significantly induced an increase of β-sheet structure and reduction of α-helix content in pork batter gels ( P < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results suggested that LF-AMF contributed to the formation of pork batter gels with a more uniform and orderly network structure.

In this study, we investigate the magnetic induction heating induced in a conducting polymer (CP) under alternative magnetic fields (AMFs). Experimental results and numerical simulations have proved that the magneto-thermal conversion of the CP is caused by the induced eddy current, which is related to the shape and intensity of the applied external AMF, and the intrinsic electrical conductivity, macrostructure and microstructure of the CP. By employing various fabrication methods, specific temperature distribution and control of thermal field within conducting polymer films and aerogels could be achieved. To exploit the potential of magnetic induction heating in CP for biomedical applications, we designed a conducting polymer aerogel-based self-adaptive heat patch and demonstrated its AMF-enabled localized heating of skin. In addition to the thermal ablation of tumor cells via magneto-thermal conversion of the CP, the promotion of neuronal differentiation at mild temperature by noninvasive magneto-electrical stimulation has also been demonstrated to be an effective strategy for tissue engineering.

The enhancement of enzyme activity has garnered significant attention in biotransformation processes and applications. This enhancement is achieved through the use of specific nanomaterials (NMs) with unique physicochemical characteristics responsive to external stimuli. In this study, an enzyme–Fe3O4nano-biocatalytic system (NBS) was developed to enable real-time activation of enzymatic catalysis under alternating magnetic field (AMF) and near-infrared (NIR) irradiation using dual-functional Fe3O4magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). When exposed to an AMF, Fe3O4MNPs generate molecular vibrations through mechanisms such as Néel or Brown relaxation while acting as a photothermal agent in response to NIR irradiation. The synergistic effect of AMF and NIR irradiation significantly enhanced energy transfer between the enzyme and Fe3O4MNPs, resulting in a maximum 4.3-fold increase in enzyme activity. Furthermore, the system reduced aldol reaction time by 66% (from 4 h to 1.5 h) while achieving 90% product yield. Additionally, factors such as nanoparticle size and NIR power were found to play a critical role in the efficiency of this real-time regulation strategy. The results also demonstrate that the enzyme–Fe3O4nanocomposites (NCs) significantly enhanced catalytic efficiency and reduced the reaction time for aldol reactions. This study demonstrates an efficient NBS controlled via the synergistic effects of AMF and NIR irradiation, enabling spatiotemporal control of biochemical reactions. This work also provides a breakthrough strategy for dynamic biocatalysis, with potential applications in industrial biomanufacturing, on-demand drug synthesis, and precision nanomedicine.

Magnetic hyperthermia has been rapidly developed as a potential cancer treatment in recent years. Artificially induced hyperthermia close to a tumor can raise the temperature to 45°C causing tumor cell death. Herein, we introduce a novel method for rapid preparation of anti-cancer magnetocaloric PCL/Fe 3 O 4 mats capable of high-performance hyperthermia using E-jet 3D printing technology. Our 3D printed mats not only maintained the heating efficiency of traditional techniques for magnetic hyperthermia but also prolonged the effective therapy in vivo . When Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) were used in mats at a concentration of 6 mmol/L, 0.07 g PCL/Fe 3 O 4 mats were able to increase the temperature peripherally to 45°C under an alternating magnetic field (AMF) within 45 min. Moreover, the reproducibility experiment indicated that the maximum temperature was achieved following repeated heating and cooling cycles. Cell toxicity tests showed a high cell death rate during one treatment cycle. In vivo experiments indicated clear signs of tumor growth inhibitory and prolonged survival time of tumor-bearing mice after 4 weeks of treatment. The present magnetic mats may be a potential candidate for a novel heat-generating substrate for localized hyperthermia cancer therapy. Furthermore, the main advantage of such implantable magnetic mats is the local and precise delivery of Fe 3 O 4 NPs, ideal for the hyperthermia treatment of easily accessible tumors. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Core–shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) have attracted attention in biomedical applications as they have highly useful materials with modified characteristics, such as high stability, dispersibility, higher permeability to certain target cells and reduction in consumption of precious materials. Synthesis of core–multishell nanoparticles with suitable sizes, structural characteristics and absorption using simple methods continues to be a challenge. In this study, \({\text{F}\text{e}}_{3}{\text{O}}_{4}@\text{A}\text{u} @{\text{S}\text{i}\text{O}}_{2}\) CSNPs were synthesized in three stages to control their size and the potential for tuning their properties. Field emission scanning electron microscope images confirmed that \({\text{F}\text{e}}_{3}{\text{O}}_{4}@\text{A}\text{u} @{\text{S}\text{i}\text{O}}_{2}\) CSNPs have a small particle size of about 22.5 nm, average crystalline size in X-ray diffractometer analysis was 22.8 nm, stability was about − 49.1 mV, and synthesis with magnetic and optical properties improved their biocompatibility. Treatment of CAL-51 and HBL-100 cell lines by \({\text{F}\text{e}}_{3}{\text{O}}_{4}@\text{A}\text{u} @{\text{S}\text{i}\text{O}}_{2}\) CSNPs under NIR laser and alternating magnetic field generated enough heat to increase cell death.

Background Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most common malignant tumor in the world. Studies in recent years have demonstrated that cancer stem cells (CSCs) are present in many tumor tissues, including HNSCC, and CSCs are the root cause of tumor recurrence and metastasis. Thus, taking new treatment measures to target the killing of CSCs that are resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy is key to the success of cancer treatment. Methods We explored a method for preparing anti-CD44 antibody-modified superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONPs). Biocompatibility was evaluated by a CCK-8 assay. The CSCs were obtained by a 3D cell culture technique from Cal-27 (human oral squamous cell carcinoma) cells, and then the CSCs were identified by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The targeting efficiency of the CD44-SPIONPs to CSCs was confirmed by Prussian blue staining and visualized by laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). Flow cytometry was used to detect the apoptosis of CSCs after alternating magnetic field (AMF) treatment. The efficacy of tumor growth inhibition by CD44-SPIONP-mediated magnetic hyperthermia therapy was evaluated with tumor xenografts in nude mice. Results The CD44-SPIONPs exhibited no negative effect on CSCs, indicating good biocompatibility. After SPIONPs were cocultured with stem cells, the majority of CD44-SPIONPs labeled with FITC penetrated the cell membrane into the cytoplasm. After AMF treatment, CD44-SPIONPs induced CSCs to undergo programmed death. The inhibitory ratio of the treated group was 33.43%, and necrotic areas in the tumor tissue were mainly distributed around the magnetic fluid. Conclusion These results demonstrate that it is possible to kill CSCs using targeted magnetic nanoparticles and an AMF and that magnetic fluid hyperthermia significantly inhibited the growth of grafted Cal-27 tumors in mice.

Remote modulation of nanoscale biochemical processes in a living system using magnetic stimulation is appealing but is restricted by the lack of a highly efficient nanomediator which can deliver timely and effective response to biological molecules under an external magnetic field. Herein, we report the development of a novel nanocatalyst based on a ferrimagnetic vortex-domain nanoring (FVIO)–enzyme hybrid that enables real-time modulation of enzymatic catalysis under an alternating magnetic field (AMF). The role of the FVIO is to provide localized heating immediately upon exposure to an AMF, which efficiently and selectively promotes the activity of conjugated enzymes on the surface. The reaction rate of the as-fabricated FVIO–β-Gal hybrid was shown to be boosted up to 180% of its initial value by localized heat generated under an AMF of 550 Oe in less than 2 s and without heating up the bulk solution. Moreover, the degree of activity acceleration was shown to be tunable by increasing the strength of the AMF. The concept of remote magnetic stimulation of enzymatic reactions has been further applied to other enzymes (e.g. FVIO–KPC and FVIO–GOx), demonstrating the general applicability of this strategy. Since almost all metabolic processes in cells rely on enzymatic catalysis to sustain life, the FVIO–enzyme system developed in this work provides a valuable nanoplatform for spatiotemporally manipulating biochemical reactions, which might pave the way for future remote manipulation of living organisms.

Magnetic hydrogel has great potential application in various fields, such as soft robots, drug delivery and biomedical engineering. We report a testing method, i.e., the infrared thermograph method based on alternating magnetic field excitation for the detection of magnetic hydrogel. We verify the feasibility of concentration evaluation of magnetic nanoparticles in magnetic hydrogels using this method and analyze the relationship between the surface temperature rise rate of the magnetic hydrogel and the nanoparticle concentration. Then, we use this method to inspect and image the distribution of magnetic particles. Besides, we validate that this method is effective for detecting bubble defects in magnetic hydrogel and imaging the three-dimensional distribution of the fibers added in the hydrogel, and metal fibers are mainly concerned. This work provides a clear insight into a nondestructive inspection and imaging method to magnetic hydrogel, and this method can be efficient to detect multiple types of information.

Magnetic hyperthermia (MH) relies on the heat generated by magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) under an alternating magnetic field to kill tumor cells. However, the thermal barrier of the cell membrane hinders the transfer of heat generated by MNPs into cells, thereby limiting their therapeutic efficacy. Enhancing MNPs endocytosis is a promising way to overcome this limitation. The modification of physicochemical properties of MNPs and the pretreatment with electrical field can enhance the endocytosis. As an alternative, here, the effect of alternating magnetic field (AMF) pretreatment was explored. The AMF stimulation increases nanoparticle uptake by 1.62-fold and improves magnetic hyperthermia efficacy by 33 %. AMF stimulation induces F-actin depolymerization, leading to a reduction in cellular elastic modulus. This decreases the elastic deformation energy required for endocytosis, thereby facilitating the formation of membrane ruffles essential for macropinocytosis.

Actin cytoskeleton disruption is a promising and intriguing anticancer strategy, but their efficiency is frequently compromised by severe side effects of the actin cytoskeleton-disrupting agents. In this study, we constructed the biocompatible actin cytoskeleton-targeting multivalent supramolecular assemblies that specifically target and disrupt the tumor actin cytoskeleton for cancer therapy. The assemblies were composed of β-cyclodextrin-grafted hyaluronic acid (HACD) and iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) grafted by an actin-binding peptide (ABP) and adamantane (Ada)-modified polylysine. Owing to the multivalent binding between cyclodextrin and Ada, HACD, and peptide-grafted MNPs (MNP-ABP-Ada) could self-assemble to form MNP-ABP-Ada⊂HACD nanofibers in a geomagnetism-dependent manner. Furthermore, the presence of ABP rendered the assemblies to efficiently target the actin cytoskeleton. Interestingly, with the acid of a low-frequency alternating magnetic field (200 Hz), the actin cytoskeleton-targeting nanofibers could induce severe actin disruption, leading to a remarkable cell cycle arrest and drastic cell death of tumor cells both in vitro and in vivo, but showed no obvious toxicity to normal cells. The actin cytoskeleton-targeting/disrupting supramolecular assembly implies an excellent strategy for realizing efficient cancer therapy.

Eddy current is a magnetic field effect generated in alternating magnetic field (AMF), which could trigger continuous local heating, reducing the energy consumption without impairing the life of the catalyst or reactor. Unfortunately, the investigation of eddy current effect on transition metal disulfides (TMDs) electrocatalysis is still in its infancy, and its actual electrocatalytic applications has been impeded by the multilayered structure of traditional layered TMDs. Typically, the step pyramid MoS 2 , with a layer-by-layer stacking structure just like the silicon steel plate in the transformer, showing an inevitable interlayer potential barrier will suppress the generation of eddy current and cause low efficiency of magnetic heating. In this work, the designed screw pyramid MoS 2 can facilitate the formation of micro eddy current and maximize utilization of magnetic heating to boost electrocatalytic activity, benefiting from its eliminated interlayer potential barrier. This work provides a new thinking for the design of field-assisted electrocatalytic reactions and development of the advanced catalyst technology.
