Inspired by organic–inorganic soft and hard components found in mollusk shells, this study utilized phytic acid (PA) and MXene (Ti 3 C 2 ) to create “soft-hard” structure on the surface of carbon fiber (CF) through the bio-interfacial cross-linking reinforcement (BICR) strategy. This strategy not only increased the chemical reaction activity on the fibre surface, but also enlarged the interphase area of the fibres, which facilitated the formation of a strong physical riveting interaction among the fibres and substrate. Compared with the untreated CF composites, the flexural strength, flexural modulus, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), tensile strength and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the CF/PEI/PA/MXene composites were increased by 51.4%, 62.5%, 63.0%, 74.9%, and 45.8%, respectively. These positive results were attributed to the large number of reactive functional groups on the PA myo-inositol ring, which increased the chemical reactivity of the fiber surface. Additionally, the MXene assembled on the fibre surface enhanced the adhesion and mechanical interlocking between the fibre and resin. This work provides an advanced route to fabricate CF composites with excellent mechanical properties.

The emergence of 4D-printing technology provides a new opportunity for the development of shape memory polymers (SMPs) with sophisticated or individualized architectures in the most material-saving way. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) has been regarded as a feasible and facile printing technology to print thermoplastics, but the low adhesion between interlayers of the obtained objects is an unavoidable problem caused by its printing principle. Fortunately, abundant biobased chemicals with a variety of reactive groups make it easy to design ecofriendly linear SMPs with active sites, which are ready for in situ reactions during FDM printing. Herein, we developed fully biobased shape memory copolyesters (PBSe-co-PBIs) by polycondensation of dimethyl itaconate, dimethyl sebacate, and 1,4-butanediol. The flexible and crystalline PBSe may serve as a molecular switch to ensure the desirable shape memory effect (SME) of the materials, and the PBI moiety with double bonds forming cross-linking points between layers during the printing process under UV irradiation acts as net points for SMPs and enhances interlayer adhesion. The shape memory performance and the enhanced interlayer adhesion of printed materials by this strategy were verified by DMA analysis and tensile tests. Finally, a 4D-printed “Sanxingdui bronze mask” and an overheating protection cover were demonstrated, which indicated a great potential in high-temperature protection devices.

Carbon dots (CDs) is an area of intense focus, currently limited to unclear photoluminescence (PL) mechanism. Much effort has been made to clarify the certain PL centers but is still fruitless. Herein, a new type of polymer carbon dots (PCDs) with absolute quantum yield as high as 44.18% was synthesized by hydrothermally crosslinking polyacrylic acid and ethylenediamine . Through carefully comparing and analysing, the PL centers were supposed to be -N O and -C O (mainly amide and/or its derived structures) rather than large-scale conjugated structure, which was similar to the previously reported sub-fluorophores. Besides, the function of polymer chains was considered to decrease the motion freedoms and provide a solvation effect by crosslinking and wrapping the fluorescence centers, which led to the improved quantum yield and red-shifted emission. The investigation on fluorescence mechanism can provide with a new understanding on crosslink enhanced emission (CEE) effect in non-conjugated fluorescence systems.

Revealing the photoluminescence (PL) origin and mechanism is a most vital but challenging topic of carbon dots. Herein, confined-domain crosslink-enhanced emission (CEE) effect was first studied by a well-designed model system of carbonized polymer dots (CPDs), serving as an important supplement to CEE in the aspect of spatial interactions. The “addition-condensation polymerization” strategy was adopted to construct CPDs with substituents exerting different degrees of steric hindrance. The effect of confined-domain CEE on the structure and luminescence properties of CPDs have been systematically investigated by combining characterizations and theoretical calculations. Such tunable spatial interactions dominated the coupling strength of the luminophores in one particle, and eventually resulted in the modulated PL properties of CPDs. These findings provide insights into the structural advantages and the PL mechanism of CPDs, which are of general significance to the further development of CPDs with tailored properties.
