Interfacial Photothermal Membrane Distillation for Direct Solar Water Production

Haoran Li,Jiahui Ma,Hao Chen,Wenpeng Hong,Jingrui Lan,Yuan Chang,Huixin Zhang,Lei Zhang,Xiaojuan Niu,Yan Li,Jingchong Liu,Cunhai Wang

Interfacial photothermal evaporation offers a promising and low-carbon footprint solution for combating worldwide water scarcity. However, its global implementation is constrained by the electricity requirement for water feeding and low freshwater yield due to the spatial decoupling nexus between heat and mass transfer. This paper reports a pumpless and efficient in-situ solar water production engineering strategy, which is termed interfacial photothermal membrane distillation (IPMD). It produces vapor by the in-situ evaporation of the spontaneously wicked water from a superhydrophilic photothermal material. Subsequently, the vapor sandwiched between the photothermal material and a permeable membrane is condensed through membrane distillation. A water productivity of 1.09 kg m −2 h −1 together with a solar-to-water efficiency of up to 70.3% are achieved at 1 sun illumination. Further evidence demonstrates that the driving factors in favor of the IPMD configuration are the interplay between the heat and water in the evaporation interface and the vapor gap. The IPMD device achieves a water yield of 3.62 kg m −2 over 10 h outdoor operation and a salt rejection rate of 98.34%. This work paves a promising way for sustainable freshwater harvesting in remote or off-grid areas.

Robust direct solar water production by integrating interfacial evaporation and membrane distillation

Haoran Li,Yinhao Qian,Yinzhen Li,Wenpeng Hong,Yan Li

Interfacial solar vapor generation (ISVG) is an important technique for producing water with a minimal carbon footprint. For customers who need a lot of water, the state-of-the-art ISVG devices are unbearable and unacceptable because of their low condensation capacity. This paper introduces a novel configuration that integrates ISVG and direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) devices to increase the water yield. A carbon nanoparticle-based solar absorber that can collect 94.6 % of incident sunlight and has a substantial water supply capacity is employed for ISVG. For high vapor permeability, moreover, a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride membrane with a moderate pore structure is adopted. The result shows that the ISVG-DCMD device has a water productivity of up to 2.71 kg m −2 h −1 under 2 sun illumination. More importantly, the system has a sustainable water productivity of 2.08 kg m −2 h −1 when operating in NaCl solution with a concentration of 3.5 % (w/w). This work effectively solves the problem of vapor condensation of the interfacial photothermal evaporator, offering a novel concept for scalable and robust direct solar water production.

Micro–Nano Water Film Enabled High-Performance Interfacial Solar Evaporation

Yu Zhen,Su Yuqing,Gu Ruonan,Wu Wei,Li Yangxi,Cheng Shaoan

Micro–nano water film enhanced interfacial solar evaporator enables a high evaporation rate of 2.18 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 sun. An outdoor device with an enhanced condensation design demonstrates a high water production rate of 15.9–19.4 kg kW −1  h −1  m −2 . A multi-objective predictive model is established to assess outdoor water production performance.

A high-performance solar-driven atmospheric water harvester for arid regions based on a self-assembled MOF-on-MOF heterostructure

Chao Su,Zexuan Wu,Jing Zhang,Kaiyang Li,Yanqiang Kong,Naiqiang Zhang,Yongping Yang

Efficient freshwater production techniques are urgently required to address the global water-scarcity problem. The solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology, which can capture water vapour from ambient air and release it under sunlight, is a sustainable and feasible strategy for obtaining fresh water. The key to achieving high water harvesting lays in the dynamic adsorption properties of the material and the heat and mass transfer characteristics of the device structure. Therefore, this paper reports a core-shell structured material, UiO-66@MIL-101(Cr) (U@M), where the outer layer exhibits excellent water-adsorption characteristics under arid conditions, and the inner layer exhibits high water-adsorption characteristics under high humidity conditions. These inner and outer layer materials are assembled into a core-shell structure while considering the water-harvesting features of both sides, achieving synergistic enhancement of the AWH performance at low relative humidity (RH). Experimental results demonstrate that at 25°C and 30 % RH, the novel core-shell structured material achieves a high water-harvesting capacity of 0.408 g g −1 and excellent stability in 50 operating cycle tests. At the system level, we have developed a solar-driven AWH device based on the synthesised core-shell material. Daytime and night-time experimental tests were conducted in outdoor environments, resulting in a water production rate exceeding 1.336 kg m − ² day − ¹, with the collected water meeting the standards for laboratory-grade pure water. The research findings can be applied to alleviate water issues in arid regions, such as residential water supply, industrial electrolysis for hydrogen production and other fields, showing broad application prospects.

Solar-Mechano Symbiosis Dual-Mode Janus Bioaerogel for Context-Adaptive Atmospheric Water Harvesting Beyond Solar Reliance

Yipeng Liu,Rui Feng,Yuyao Zhao,Xiaoya Guo,Jinghan Ding,Sibi Liu,Yijin Wang,Jinmeng Zhu,Xuanhua Li

Solar-driven sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SS-AWH) offers promise for addressing global freshwater scarcity. However, the SS-AWH heavily relies on favorable and sustained solar irradiation; yet real-world solar irradiation exhibits significant spatiotemporal fluctuations, limiting its sustainable application, as non/low-light conditions sharply reduce water productivity. This constraint is fundamentally due to the singleness of the water release pathway via photothermal desorption. Here, a novel dual-mode bio-based Janus aerogel (DBJA) is presented, enabling efficient, all-weather, multi-scenario atmospheric water harvesting via selectively solar-driven and compression-activated water release. The Janus structure optimizes mass/heat transfer between hygroscopic and photothermal domains, achieving the most balanced adsorption–desorption kinetics and compression-recovery strength for solar-mechano symbiosis. Under favorable sunlight, DBJA demonstrates a competitive water release efficiency of 1.32 g g −1 day −1 outdoors. Crucially, without solar irradiation, DBJA achieves a total water productivity of 12.80 g g −1 over 5-cycle adsorption-compression with 98% volume recovery and is stable within 50 cycles. Enhanced physical inlay and multiple chemical interactions ensure limited leakage of Li + ions during compression, and the collected water easily conforms to the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water standards. This work provides a flexible approach for sustainable atmospheric water harvesting beyond solar reliance through multi-mode synergy and gradient architecture.
