A micro photocatalytic fuel cell with an air-breathing, membraneless and monolithic design

Ming Xia,Rong Chen,Xun Zhu,Qiang Liao,Liang An,Zhibin Wang,Xuefeng He,Long Jiao

In this study, a membraneless, monolithic micro photocatalytic fuel cell with an air-breathing cathode was developed for simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity generation . In this newly-developed micro photocatalytic fuel cell, the photoanode and cathode were arranged with a shoulder-to-shoulder design, forming two planar electrodes. Such design offers several advantages of enhanced mass transfer, uniform light distribution, short light transfer path, membrane elimination and easy fabrication, integration, and compatibility with other microdevices. The performance of this type fuel cell was evaluated by using methanol as a model pollutant under the alkaline condition. Experimental results indicated the developed micro photocatalytic fuel cell was able to show good photo-response to the illumination and satisfactory performance as well as durability. Parametric study on the cell performance was also performed. It was found that increasing the light intensity , methanol concentration and KOH concentration could improve the cell performance. But for the effect of the liquid flow rate , it was shown that the cell performance firstly increased with increasing the liquid flow rate and then decreased with further increasing the liquid flow rate. This study not only opens a new avenue for the design of the micro photocatalytic fuel cell but also is helpful for the optimization of the operating conditions.

Efficient Degradation of Norfloxacin and Simultaneous Electricity Generation in a Persulfate-Photocatalytic Fuel Cell System

Jiawen Li,Ruizhen Li,Luomei Zou,Xingyong Liu

Photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) has been verified to be a promising technique to treat organic matter and recover energy synchronously. Sulfate radicals (SO4·−), as a strong oxidant, have obvious advantages in the degradation of refractory pollutants compared with hydroxyl radicals (·OH), which is the dominant radical in PFC. This study reports a coupling method of PFC and persulfate (PS) activation to promote the degradation of antibiotic norfloxacin (NOR) and simultaneous electricity generation. The added PS as an electron acceptor could be activated by photoelectric effects to produce SO4·−at the electrodes-electrolyte interface. In the solution, PS as supporting electrolyte could accelerate the electron transfer and also be activated by ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation, which could extend the radical oxidation reaction to the whole solution and improve the PFC performance. The performance comparison among different systems indicated the excellent synergistic effect of PFC and PS activation for improving NOR degradation and electricity generation. The effects of influencing factors including initial pH, PS concentration, and initial NOR concentration on the degradation of NOR were investigated extensively to find out the optimal conditions. Moreover, according to the results of radical capture experiments, the significantly contribution of both SO4·−and ·OH to the degradation of NOR was demonstrated and a tentative function mechanism for the NOR degradation in the proposed system was provided. Finally, total organic carbon and real wastewater treatment confirmed the high mineralization and practical applicability of the proposed PFC/PS system. Keywords:photocatalytic fuel cell;persulfate activation;norfloxacin;degradation;electricity generation

Comparison analysis on simultaneous decolorization of Congo red and electricity generation in microbial fuel cell (MFC) with l-threonine-/conductive polymer-modified anodes

Li Chao,Luo Miaomiao,Zhou Shihua,He Hanyue,Cao Jiashun,Luo Jingyang

l -Threonine and three kinds of conductive polymers were applied for anode modification in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for decolorization of Congo red with simultaneous electricity generation. The description of modified anodes with FTIR, surface contact angle, and CV analysis showed that the anode surface was successfully grafted with functional groups, with improving wettability, as well as the increasing specific surface area and electrochemical activity. For l -threonine modification, the highest decolorization rate of 97% of the MFC, and meanwhile, the maximum current density of 155.8 mA/m 2 , was obtained at the modified concentration of 400 mg/L. For conductive polymer modifications, the poly (aniline-1,8-diaminonaphthalene) (short for PANDAN) owned the highest performance, with the current density 185 mA/m 2 , and the decolorization rate was 97%. Compared with l -threonine, the modifications by conductive polymers were more suitable for MFC decolorization due to their functional groups and unique conductivity. In addition, high-throughput sequencing analysis was conducted for the conductive polymers modified anodes to reveal their bioelectrochemical mechanisms.

Shape-controllable binderless self-supporting hydrogel anode for microbial fuel cells

Lijuan Qi,Jiansong Wu,Ye Chen,Qing Wen,Haitao Xu,Yuyang Wang

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are potentially used for electricity generation , but their low power output hinders their practical application. This study presents novel, porosity binderless PPy–CS–CNT hydrogel materials, which were prepared using Fe(NO 3 ) 3 as an initiator. It can be seen from the results of SEM and swelling ratio that the prepared material had a uniform structure with rich three-dimensional porosity and showed good water retention performance. Electrochemical tests showed that the charge transfer impedance ( R ct ) of PPy–CS–CNT anode displayed a reduction in comparison with PPy anode (1.06 Ω vs. 2.20 Ω). And the power density of MFC with PPy–CS–CNT anode reached 364 mW m −2 , which was 1.36 times as much as that of MFC with PPy anode. High-throughput sequencing results showed that the PPy–CS–CNT hydrogel bioanode exhibits good biocompatibility and selective enrichment of electrogenic bacteria. The dominant genera on PPy–CS–CNT hydrogel anode are the electroactive bacteria, Rhodopsedomonas (47.69%) and Geobacter (8.47%). Therefore, the PPy–CS–CNT hydrogel anode showed a potential for improving the electricity production performance of MFCs.

PPy/WO3 Co-modified TiO2 Photoanode Based Photocatalytic Fuel Cell for Degradation of Rhodamine B and Electricity Generation Under Visible Light Illumination

Yao Haoyang,Xu Yunlan,Zhong Dengjie,Zeng Yundong,Zhong Nianbing

In order to inhibit rapid recombination of electron–hole pairs of photoanode and expand its light response wavelength, PPy-14%/WO 3 /TiO 2 /Ti photoanode was prepared. The maximum photocurrent density is 2.31 mA·cm −2 , which is 1.76 times higher than that of WO 3 /TiO 2 /Ti at 1.1 V (vs. SCE). The maximum power density, phontocurrent density and Rhodamine B degradation rate of photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) with PPy-14%/WO 3 /TiO 2 /Ti photoanode and Cu cathode are 25.48 μW·cm −2 , 0.25 mA·cm −2 and 88.5%, respectively. The excellent performance is mainly due to the good carrier migration rate of PPy and the synergistic effect of PPy/WO 3 /TiO 2 /Ti ternary hybrid electrode, so that photogenerated electrons and holes can accumulate in the conduction band of WO 3 and HOMO of PPy, respectively. This not only expands the light absorption range and enhances the light absorption intensity, but also improves the separation of electron–hole pairs, and finally significantly enhances the Rhodamine B degradation and electricity generation performance of PFC. Graphical Abstract In order to inhibit rapid recombination of electron–hole pairs of photoanode and expand its light response wavelength, PPy-14%/WO 3 /TiO 2 /Ti photoanode was prepared.

Complete solar-driven dual-photoelectrode fuel cell for water purification and power generation in the presence of peroxymonosulfate

Xuefeng Liu,Shijie You,Nanqi Ren,Hao Zhou,Jinna Zhang

This study reports the development of complete solar-driven dual-photoelectrode fuel cell (PFC) based on WO 3 photoanode and Cu 2 O photocathode with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) serving as cathodic electron acceptor . As indicated by photoelectrochemical measurements, the PMS was able to improve thermodynamic properties of photocathode, achieving an increased open circuit potential from 0.42 V to 0.65 V vs standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). Under simulated sunlight irradiation (~100 mW cm −2 ), the maximum power density of 0.12 mW cm −2 could be obtained at current density of 0.34 mA cm −2 , which was 8.57 times of that produced by PFC without PMS (0.014 mW cm −2 ). Correspondingly, adding PMS (1.0 mM) increased overall removal efficiency of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) from 39.8% to 96.8%, accounting for the first-order kinetic constant ( k =0.056 min −1 ) being 6.67 times of that in the absence of PMS ( k =0.0084 min −1 ). Radical quenching and electron spin-resonance (ESR) results suggested the contribution of free radicals (•OH and SO 4 •- ) and non-radical pathway associated with direct activation of PMS by Cu 2 O photocathode. Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed the strong non-radical interaction between Cu 2 O photocathode and PMS, resulting in 4-CP removal via activation of PMS by surface complex on Cu 2 O. The proof-in-concept complete solar-driven dual-photoelectrode fuel cell may offer an effective manner to realize water purification and power generation, making wastewater treatment more economical and more sustainable.

NH2-MIL-125/g-C3N4/Bi2O3/Ti photoanode for visible light responsive photocatalytic fuel cell degradation of rhodamine B and electricity generation

Lin Dong,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong,Nianbing Zhong,Zhuofan Han,Yi Liu,Haixing Chang

The low electron–hole separation in the photoanode generally restricts the visible light response of photocatalytic fuel cell (PFCs). In this study, 5% NH2-MIL-125/g-C3N4/Bi2O3/Ti photoanode was synthesized and assembled with a PFC with Cu cathode to degrade rhodamine B and generate electricity. With visible light irritation, the maximum photocurrent density, maximum power density, and degradation rate of the PFC were 0.59 mA cm−2, 29.88 μW cm−2, and 97.48% (1 h), respectively. The major active species in the PFC were h+, ˙O2−, and ˙OH. The good performance of the PFC was ascribed to the formation of a double Z-type heterojunction in the 5% NH2-MIL-125/g-C3N4/Bi2O3/Ti photoanode so that the photoelectrons of NH2-MIL-125 and Bi2O3 directly combine with the photoholes of g-C3N4, making the photoholes of NH2-MIL-125 and Bi2O3 and the photoelectrons of g-C3N4 directly or indirectly involved in the RhB degradation process and generating electricity. Thus, the separation rate of the e−–h+ pairs in the photoanode and the capability of the PFC are greatly improved.

Synergistic Control of Trimethoprim and the Antimicrobial Resistome in Electrogenic Microbial Communities

Yaoli Wei,Liying Zhang,Bin Liang,Hanlin Cui,Ke Shi,Zhihong Liu,Aijuan Zhou,Xiuping Yue

Synergistic control of the risks posed by emerging antimicrobials and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is crucial for ensuring ecological safety. Although electrogenic respiration can enhance the biodegradation of several antimicrobials and reduce ARGs accumulation, the association mechanisms of antimicrobial biodegradation (trimethoprim, TMP) with the fate of the antimicrobial resistome remain unclear. Here, the biotransformation pathway of TMP, microbial associations, and functional gene profiles (e.g., degradation, antimicrobial resistance, and electron transfer) were analyzed. The results showed that the microbial electrogenic respiration significantly enhanced the biodegradation of TMP, especially with a cosubstrate sodium acetate supply. Electroactive bacteria enriched in the electrode biofilm positively correlated with potential TMP degraders dominated in the planktonic communities. These cross-niche microbial associations may contribute to the accelerated catabolism of TMP and extracellular electron transfer. Importantly, the evolution and dissemination of overall ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were significantly weakened due to the enhanced cometabolic biodegradation of TMP. This study provides a promising strategy for the synergistic control of the water ecological risks of antimicrobials and their resistome, while also highlighting new insights into the association of antimicrobial biodegradation with the evolution of the resistome in an electrically integrated biological process.

Catalytic and filterable polyester-filter membrane electrode with a high performance carbon foam–Fe–Co catalyst improved electricity generation and waste-water treatment in MBR–MFC

Tingting Yu,Lifen Liu,Qiao Yang,Jing Song,Fenglin Yang

Using the flat module membrane electrodes based on polyester filter modified with polyaniline (PANI)–phytic acid (PA), a new type of membrane bio-reactor (MBR) system is developed for both bio-electrochemical electricity generation and effluent filtration. A specifically prepared carbon foam–Fe–Co catalyst was coated on the conductive, filterable cathode membrane which makes it catalytic for enhancing cathodic oxygen reduction reaction and electricity generation. The cell voltage (with carbon foam–Fe–Co, 0.5–0.4 V) is superior to control test 1 (without any catalyst, 0.2 V), moreover, it is even better than control test 2 (with Pt–C catalyst, 0.5–0.3 V). The corresponding maximum power density of carbon foam–Fe–Co is 38.5 and 2.4 times higher than control test 1 and 2, respectively. More importantly, the base electrode materials and catalyst were both low-cost. The overall removal efficiency of COD and NH4+–N are satisfactory, at 95% ± 2.5% and 85% ± 2.5%, respectively. This integrated system is easy to scale up for practical application in waste-water treatment and offers a better option in operating and coupling MBR with bio-electricity generation.

Photocatalytic fuel cell based on highly conductive pathways for norfloxacin removal in mariculture wastewater and simultaneous electricity generation

Bingjie Huo,Wei Bao,Weijun Tian,Bingkun Liu,Zhiyang Lu,Mengyuan Zou,Xinran Yu,Xinbo Wang

Antibiotic contamination in mariculture wastewater urgently requires effective remediation. Seawater's natural conductivity facilitates photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) deployment for meeting this challenge. In this study, the ZnSe/ZnO/Ti core-shell nanorod array photoanode was successfully prepared, which was assembled with carbon cloth (CC) cathode to build the PFC system for norfloxacin (NOR) degradation and simultaneous electricity generation in mariculture wastewater. Experimental results demonstrated that the introduction of the ZnSe shell effectively enhanced the light harvesting capability and formed interfacial electric field at the heterojunction interface, promoting charge transfer performance. The ohmic resistance was the limiting factor for PFC performance enhancement. The Ti plate effectively reduced ohmic resistance, enhanced ion migration rates, and maximized the efficiency of interfacial reactions. The heterojunction, nanorod array, and Ti current collector formed high-conductivity pathways for the rapid directional transport of both charge carriers and electrolyte ions, reducing the resistance of the PFC and significantly enhancing its performance. The PFC system exhibited superior degradation performance with 94.42 % removal of NOR in 120 min. The simultaneous electric energy output of ZnSe/ZnO/Ti-15 was 2.46 mW/cm 2 , which was 2.48 and 2.2 times higher than those of the ZnO/Ti and ZnSe/ZnO/FTO systems, respectively. Moreover, the abundant Cl − in mariculture wastewater acted as supporting electrolyte while also generating Cl•, ClO• radicals, thereby further facilitating degradation. This study provided new insights for the performance improvement of PFC and the resource utilization treatment of marine aquaculture wastewater.

Core function and mechanism of electrospun carbon nanofiber aerogels/CNTs for accelerating electron transfer efficiency in microbial fuel cell

Xiaoqiu Lin,Zijing Su,Yuanhao Geng,Ling Wang,Zhiling Li,Haoxu Liu,Congju Li

The sluggish extracellular electron transfer efficiency by traditional two-dimensional anodic materials greatly restricts the application of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Three-dimensional electrospun carbon nanofiber aerogels (ECNFAs) demonstrate exceptional performance in electrocatalytic energy conversion. However, the effect of components like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in ECNFAs on power generation performance in MFCs remains largely unknown. This study confirmed that a higher amount of CNTs (7 %) resulted in a higher power density in ECNFAs/CNTs-7 modified MFC (1539.4 mW m −2 ) compared to ECNFAs/CNTs-5 (5 % CNTs, 1426.2 mW m −2 ) and ECNFAs/CNTs-3 (3 % CNTs, 1181.9 mW m −2 ), and it was 2.6 times higher than carbon cloth (CC, 596.1 mW m −2 ). In addition, ECNFAs/CNTs-7 anode showed the highest coulombic efficiency (23.1 %) and lowest electron transfer resistance (9.6Ω). Higher amounts of CNTs in ECNFAs/CNTs-7 attracted more compact biofilm formation and enriched the electroactive bacteria ( Geobacter ) at the MFC anode, contributing to enhanced extracellular electron transfer efficiency and organic contaminant decomposition. The ECNFAs/CNTs facilitated the electron transfer efficiency in MFC through the 3D-scaffold structure and the abundant conductive CNTs. It provided sufficient surface and facilitated extracellular electron transfer activity for electroactive bacteria. This study demonstrated the feasibility and mechanism of ECNFAs/CNTs in promoting power generation in MFCs, thereby guiding the highly efficient recovery of residual energy from wastewater.
