Application of semi-IPN network superhydrophilic membranes prepared on the basis of metal net for efficient oil-water separation, emulsion separation

Yuxuan Zhang,Zaosheng Lv,Guangli Chen,Yuhang Liu,Yang Lei,Yanfen Huang

Hydrogel, a common hydrophilic material, is often used in wastewater treatment. In order to expand the application of hydrogel in superhydrophilic coatings, we chose acrylic acid (AA) and methacryloyloyloxy ethyltrimethylammonium chloride (DMC), two chemical materials commonly used in wastewater treatment, and semi-interpenetrating networks (semi-IPN) based on the metal mesh structure were successfully polymerization, and a superhydrophilic membrane (PAA/PDMC@SSM(stainless steel mesh)) was prepared. The membrane ensures the efficient separation of different types of oil-water mixtures under high flux conditions (up to 99 % separation efficiency) and the effective removal of oil from water-in-oil emulsions. This green polymer material can be used for efficient oil-water separation as well as separation of water-in-oil emulsions (separation efficiency close to 98 %). In order to prevent microorganisms from clogging the separation membrane during wastewater treatment, it was tested for E. coli with 99 % inhibition. PAA/PDMC@SSM was found to be acid-resistant, durable and self-cleaning for viscous oils.

Preparation of superhydrophilic membranes from discarded masks for efficient oil-water separation and anti-crude oil adhesion

Bingfan Li,Xiaowen Qian,Jiang Han,Yong Han,Chao Yang,Tifeng Jiao

To overcome the limitations of inefficiency and high operational costs associated with conventional oil–water separation technologies, this study introduces a novel membrane material inspired by the natural adhesive properties of mussels, derived sustainably from discarded face masks. A straightforward, eco-friendly one-step modification method employing gallic acid (GA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was adopted to fabricate a superhydrophilic coating on polypropylene (PP) membranes. The modified membrane exhibited exceptional wettability, characterized by a water contact angle (WCA) of 0° and an underwater oil contact angle (UWOCA) of 162°, along with remarkable flux performance of up to 43,935.11 L·m −2 ·h −1 for oil–water mixtures and 1,328.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 for emulsions. Performance tests further demonstrated significant enhancements in hydrophilicity, separation efficiency, fouling resistance, and reusability under demanding operational conditions. Environmentally benign, mechanically stable, and simple to implement, this membrane technology represents a promising approach for both sustainable recycling of waste face masks and advancement in high-performance separation technologies.

Yingying Lin,Fan Yu,Zijian Yu,Xiaoyan Lin,Fang Lin,Riri Liu,Qin Chen,Jiale Du,Xuan Huang,Ailiang Gu,Xuewei Li,Sotto Arcadio,Shengqiong Fang,Wenyuan Ye,Jiuyang Lin

Substantial discharge of industrial oily wastewater calls for an efficient and sustainable treatment for resource recovery. Superwetting membranes offer a feasible approach to fractionate oil species and water from oily wastewater for addressing this technical challenge. In this study, we proposed a useful strategy for constructing a superhydrophilic membrane with superior antibacterial properties through rapid co-deposition of dopamine and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) initiated by ammonium persulfate on the Cu nanoparticles-loaded porous PVDF substrate. The resultant superhydrophilic membrane yielded an underwater oil contact angle of 163.5°, enabling a fast and robust gravity-driven filtration for various oil-in-water emulsions with a separation efficiency of >99.9 %. Additionally, incorporating of Cu nanoparticles and polydopamine endowed the superhydrophilic membrane with superior antibacterial activity (100 % inhibition efficiency against Escherichia coli ), and thereby remarkably enhancing the anti-biofouling performance. This study provides a viable approach to design high-performance membranes for separation of oil-in-water emulsions, with promising applications in the industrial and environmental sectors.

Fabrication of novel zwitterionic copolymer high performance membrane applied for oil/water mixtures and emulsions separation

Baolei Qiao,Hao Song,Haiyan Qian,Qinggang Kong

The separation of oily wastewater is important for the ecological environment. Due to all kinds of defects in traditional methods, membrane technology shows outstanding merit for separating oil contaminants from water. In this work, a novel zwitterionic monomer 2-(3-carboxyacryloyloxy)-N-(Carboxyethyl)-N, N-dimethyl ethanaminium (DMAAA) was synthesized and characterized. Then, a novel zwitterionic copolymer , poly(2-(3-carboxyacryloyloxy)-N-(Carboxyethyl)-N, N-dimethyl ethanaminium-co-2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (P(DMAAA-co-HEA)) was prepared by free radical polymerization . The superhydrophilic and underwater-superoleophobic membranes were prepared using stainless steel mesh (SSM) with different pore sizes as substrate, P(DMAAA-co-HEA) as superhydrophilic component, nano-silica (SiO 2 ) as micro-nano porous structure, and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as cross-linking agent by the one-step dip-coating method. P(DMAAA-co-HEA)-TEOS-SiO 2 coated 400 mesh SSM(PTS-SSM400) exhibits ultra-high separation flux (243,600 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and separation efficiency (>99.88%) in separating oil/water mixtures. And the coated 2000 mesh SSM (PTS-SSM2000) can separate various surfactant-stabilized emulsions with high water flux and efficiency only under gravity. Moreover, the membranes have excellent chemical stability and wear resistance. Even having been successively immersed for seven days in acidic, alkaline, and saline environments, respectively, and after 50 wear resistance cycle tests, the coated membranes can still effectively separate oil/water mixtures. The simple and facile preparation method is especially suitable for large-scale practical industrial applications.

Effective separation of water-in-oil emulsions using an under-medium superlyophilic membrane with hierarchical pores

Tianyue Zhang,Xuejiao Wang,Ying Dong,Jing Li,Xiao-Yu Yang

Separating water-in-oil emulsions is important in terms of environmental protection and resource recovery. To address the challenges posed by the water–oil interface, superwetting materials have been designed to accomplish separation through filtration and adsorption. Superhydrophobic membranes prevent the permeation of water droplets owing to extreme repellence and their size-sieving abilities. However, their use in remediating water-contaminated oil is limited by high oil viscosities. Meanwhile, in-air superhydrophilic sorbents are rarely employed for the separation of water-in-oil emulsions due to the thermodynamic and kinetic limitations of water adsorption in oil. Herein, the integration of an under-medium superlyophilic membrane with the hierarchical porous structure of wood is presented for filtration-driven selective adsorption of water from surfactant-stabilized (10 g/L) water-in-oil emulsions. Compared to filtration through a natural wood membrane or direct adsorption using an under-oil superhydrophilic wood membrane, the under-medium superlyophilic wood membrane demonstrated high separation efficiencies of > 99.95% even when applied to the regeneration of high-viscosity lubricating (6.3 mPa s) and edible (50.5 mPa s) oils, exhibiting viscosity-dependent fluxes and excellent stability. Moreover, the cost of purifying 200 mL of lubricating oil using the modified wood membrane was much lower than the oil’s market price and required a low energy consumption of ca. 1.72 kWh. Environmental implication The ever-growing use of petroleum and industrial/domestic oil products has led to excessive (estimated at a million tons per year) output of waste oils. Because direct discharge of waste oils into the environment causes serious pollution problems, separating water-in-oil emulsions is important in terms of environmental protection and resource recovery. Here filtration-driven water adsorption has been demonstrated to be a feasible method for the remediation of water-contaminated waste oils, even those that are highly viscous.

Electro-enhanced rapid separation of nanosized oil droplets from emulsions via the superhydrophilic micro-sized pore membrane

Weiwei Zheng,Jingcheng Xu,Liya Wang,Jialu Zhang,Wenhai Chu,Jia Liu,Lijun Lu,Chen Cai,Kaiming Peng,Xiangfeng Huang

Waste oil-in-water emulsion is a special and unmanageable oily wastewater produced by several industries. Based on the sieving effect, the use of a membrane is a promising method to separate emulsion, whereas low flux remains a fundamental challenge. In this study, the coupling of an electric field with superhydrophilic fibrous membranes helped separate micro-/nano- paraffin in water emulsions (247–1887 nm) stabilized by SDS (100–500 mg/L) with a general applicability. The micro-sized pore membrane (0.634 μm) achieved outstanding rejection of nano-sized oil droplets (247 nm) using an electric field. It promoted flux from 1,202 to 18,388 LMH/bar by 1,429 % which was more than that in other literature by 1–2 orders of magnitude and improved oil removal from 97.61 % to 99.88 %. The reduction of equivalent pore size of membrane by the double layer force and the promotion of coalescence of oil droplets driven by the Laplace force rooted in the fibrous spindle of the membrane achieved enhanced selectivity. Electrophoretic force and double layer force mitigated the formation of the filter cake and irreversible fouling, respectively, to promote permeability and antifouling. This research provides a method for the simultaneous promotion of flux and improvement in effluent quality using an electric field, which breaks the limit of the trade-off effect.

Surface manipulation for prevention of migratory viscous crude oil fouling in superhydrophilic membranes

Zhao Yuanyuan,Yang Xiaobin,Cheng Zhongjun,Lau Cher Hon,Ma Jun,Shao Lu

Here, we present a proactive fouling prevention mechanism that endows superhydrophilic membranes with antifouling capability against migratory viscous crude oil fouling. By simulating the hierarchical architecture/chemical composition of a dahlia leaf, a membrane surface is decorated with wrinkled-pattern microparticles, exhibiting a unique proactive fouling prevention mechanism based on a synergistic hydration layer/steric hindrance. The density functional theory and physicochemical characterizations demonstrate that the main chains of the microparticles are bent towards Fe 3+ through coordination interactions to create nanoscale wrinkled patterns on smooth microparticle surfaces. Nanoscale wrinkled patterns reduce the surface roughness and increase the contact area between the membrane surface and water molecules, expanding the steric hindrance between the oil molecules and membrane surface. Molecular dynamic simulations reveal that the water-molecule densities and strengths of the hydrogen bonds are higher near the resultant membrane surface. With this concept, we can successfully inhibit the initial adhesion, migration, and deposition of oil, regardless of the viscosity, on the membrane surface and achieve migratory viscous crude oil antifouling. This research on the PFP mechanism opens pathways to realize superwettable materials for diverse applications in fields related to the environment, energy, health, and beyond.

Superhydrophilic membrane coupled with hydroxide ion-assisted bubbles for efficient separation of surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions

Hui Li,Shaopeng Gan,Chuan Yue,Zechen Yan,Qingzhong Xue,Jianqiang Zhang,Tao Yan,Hongbo Zeng

Developing a feasible and efficient membrane for the purification of surfactant-stabilized emulsions is urgently needed but impeded by the issues of membrane fouling and the inherent trade-off between separation efficiency and permeation flux. A superhydrophilic conductive membrane was developed by coating MXene/carbon nanotubes layer and polydopamine-hydrogel molecular layer, which as cathode integrates feasible hydroxide ion-assisted bubbles on its surface by electrolysis of water. These bubbles are more effective than conventional ones in removing surfactant-stabilized oil droplets because the hydroxide ions significantly promote the aggregation of oil droplets and bubbles by reducing their Debye length. In this way, the oil droplets even the small-sized ones assisted by these bubbles are quickly detached from the membrane surface, avoiding the oil accumulation and penetration, significantly mitigating the membrane fouling and trade-off challenges. Therefore, the membrane has outstanding separation efficiency (99.57 %), permeation flux (2065 L m −1 h −1 bar −1 ), antifouling ability and durability in surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsion separation. Besides, this membrane coupled with hydroxide ion-assisted bubbles is easily manageable and eco-friendly, which provides a promising solution and valuable insights for efficient emulsion separation and wastewater remediation.

Study on Low Thermal-Conductivity of PVDF@SiAG/PET Membranes for Direct Contact Membrane Distillation Application

Jun Xiang,Sitong Wang,Nailin Chen,Xintao Wen,Guiying Tian,Lei Zhang,Penggao Cheng,Jianping Zhang,Na Tang

In order to enhance the separation performance and reduce the heat loss of transmembrane for membrane distillation, the thermal efficiency and hydrophobicity of the membrane distillation need to be simultaneously enhanced. In this work, a polyvinylidene difluoride/polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PVDF/PET) hydrophobic/hydrophilic membrane has been prepared by non-solvent phase induction method. Nanosized silica aerogel (SiAG) with high porosity has been added to the composite membranes. The modifying effects and operating conditions on permeate flux and thermal efficiency in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) are investigated. Furthermore, the latent heat of vaporization and the heat transfer across the membranes have been compared for SiAG addition, which indicates that the composite PVDF@SiAG/PET membranes demonstrate a great potential for distillation-separation application due to their high heat efficiency.Keywords:non-solvent induce phase separation;hydrophobic/hydrophilic membrane;silica aerogel;low thermal-conductivity;membranes distillation

Microbubble-assisted double-defense design of anti-fouling superhydrophilic membrane for sustainable emulsion separation and synergistic pollutant degradation

Tianlu Yu,Xilin Li,Shenghai Li,Zhecun Wang

Conventional superwettable membranes employed for oil/water emulsion separation often exhibit limited operational longevity due to insufficient demulsification efficiency and susceptibility to surface fouling in practical scenarios. Herein, a superhydrophilic PVA/ZnIn 2 S 4 nanofibrous membrane (PZM) with exceptional wettability, visible-light-driven photocatalytic overall water splitting activity, and self-cleaning functionality is developed via a simple one-step electrospinning method. Microbubbles are generated and released in situ from the membrane surface under visible light irradiation spontaneously without adding harmful initiators, which may penetrate adhered oil contaminants from the surface and remove them through enhanced buoyancy. This dynamic microbubble layer integrated with the static superhydrophilic hydration layer creates a dual physical barrier, thus effectively inhibiting oil adhesion and actively protecting the surface from oil fouling. Additionally, the as-produced microbubbles can attract and float oil droplets, thereby facilitating demulsification. Consequently, this microbubble-assisted strategy can effectively mitigate permeability reduction caused by membrane fouling, enhancing both permeability and separation efficiency to achieve sustainable self-cleaning performance in oil-in-water emulsion separation. Over 180 min of continuous operational testing, the PZM not only achieves full permeability recovery, but also progressively increases the separation efficiency to 99.7 %. Furthermore, the incorporation of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers endows the membrane with simultaneous photocatalytic dye degradation capability, enabling synchronous treatment of complex wastewater containing both emulsified oils and organic pollutants. This work provides a novel strategy for developing multifunctional separation membranes capable of highly efficient emulsion separation and simultaneous pollutant degradation, demonstrating broad application prospects in oily wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Wave-generating ceramic membranes: Radial permeation drives axial waves for enhanced mass transfer in falling-film contactors

Yunzhao Guo,Jicheng Liu,Xingwang Qi,Kaiyun Fu,Xianfu Chen,Minghui Qiu,Yiqun Fan

Amine-based CO 2 capture is hindered by energy-intensive solvent regeneration (>120 °C). Here, we propose a falling-film hydrophilic ceramic membrane contactor to address efficiency-scalability trade-offs in conventional hydrophobic systems. This design eliminates pore-level mass transfer barriers while maximizing interfacial contact. However, quantitative predictions of permeation-coupled falling film dynamics remain underdeveloped, hindering scale-up. This work addressing three critical gaps: (1) Mechanistic modeling of falling film dynamics under permeation, (2) microscale analysis of permeation-falling film coupling transport characteristics, and (3) prediction correlation using dimensionless parameters ( Re , We , Sh ) linking micro-macro transport. A multiphysics framework combining 2D phase-field simulations (validated experimentally, residual deviation < 3.1 %) outperforms 1D models (errors 14.5–31.7 %). High-fidelity 2D simulations reveal that radial permeation significantly induces axial film heterogeneity and enhances interfacial wave dynamics. The derived Re - We - Sh engineering correlation ( R 2  = 0.98) demonstrates a prediction accuracy. This model creates a bi-directional framework: it both explains observed industrial performance through first-principles mechanisms and predicts optimal operating conditions for sustainable solvent regeneration.

PSU-g-SBMA hollow fiber membrane for treatment of oily wastewater

Shen Chong,Zhang Qian,Meng Qin

Ultrafiltration membranes can intercept oil particles smaller than 10 μm, but the membranes are easily contaminated by oil due to their hydrophobicity. To treat various oily wastewaters, we prepared a hydrophilic hollow fiber membrane (HFM) with anti-fouling property by grafting sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) onto polysulfone (PSU). For six simulated wastewaters containing emulsified oil at 1,000 mg/L, the PSU-g-SBMA HFM was able to remove 98.5–99.7% of oil, higher than that of PSU HFM at 91.1–98.9%. The oil concentration in filtrate was less than 15 mg/L, which could meet the discharge standard of wastewater. The water flux of PSU-g-SBMA HFM can be completely recovered after being washed by rhamnolipid and alkali solution, while the same cleaning process could not recover the PSU HFM. As found, the contact angles of oil droplets on the PSU-g-SBMA membrane were larger than those on PSU membrane, which indicated the improved hydrophilicity by PSU-g-SBMA. For 48 h of filtration to soybean and diesel oil/water emulsion, the effect of PSU-g-SBMA HFM was stable and the flux could be completely recovered by cleaning. Therefore, we provided a new method for oily wastewater treatment, which can efficiently and energy-saving remove various oil substances in wastewater. PSU-g-SBMA hollow fiber membrane could well remove >98.5% of various oil form wastewaters. RHA + NaOH solution could completely recover the water flux of the oil-contaminated PSU-g-SBMA hollow fiber membrane. Oil contamination on membranes was partly determined by the contact angles of oil.
