As a functional material, conductive hydrogel has been widely used due to its stretchability and flexibility, especially in the field of flexible wearable sensors. However, preparing a hydrogel sensor with high elasticity, fatigue resistance, and low-temperature resistance is still challenging. In this work, a novel hydrogel was synthesized with acrylic acid and sodium p-styrene sulfonate in an acidic solution of chitosan under ultraviolet light. Then, the hydrogel was immersed in the sodium chloride solution to obtain a chitosan/poly(acrylic acid-sodium p-styrene sulfonate)/sodium chloride (CS/P(AA-co-SS)/NaCl) dual network (DN) hydrogel. The sodium chloride caused the molecular chains of the hydrogel to entangle. The hydrogel shows excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength is as high as 532.2 kPa, elongation at break is as high as 620%, energy to break is 1200 kJ/m3, compressive strength at 80% is 661 kPa, and compressive toughness is 83.5 kJ/m3) and high electrical conductivity (up to 4.5 S/m). At the same time, the hydrogel possesses excellent resilience and fatigue resistance due to hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and the existence of hydrophobic domains. Moreover, the hydrogel also exhibits outstanding frost resistance, excellent mechanical properties, and electrical conductivity even at −20 °C. The wearable sensor made of the CS/P(AA-co-SS)/NaCl DN hydrogel will have high sensitivity (under 100% strain, gauge factor = 2.4) and repeatability, which can accurately detect various movements of the human body.

The reuse of waste biomass resources has garnered significant attention in sustainable energy research. The selection of green, natural, and pollution-free biomass materials for preparing triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is a hot research topic. In this work, a low-cost and easy-to-process single-electrode TENG was constructed with Perilla straw and methylcellulose. Under an external force of 40 N and a contact separation frequency of 0.8 Hz, the maximum open circuit voltage and current are 5.7 V and 199.6 nA, and the charge is 1.86 nC. When the resistance is 150 MΩ, the output power reaches a maximum value of 2160 nW. With the flick of the hand, it can be used for circuit lighting and can light up 80 LED lights. Selecting a single-electrode mode for TENG has advantages in human body sensing. After the movements of the wrist, finger and arm joint, the oscilloscope can clearly identify the motion signals. This flexible TENG is capable of collecting the mechanical energy generated during body movement to achieve self-powering and human sensing, providing new ideas for the high value-added utilization of waste biomass straw.

A lignin-embedded nanocellulose (LCNC) hydrogel, derived from repurposed wheat straw biomass, was fabricated through a ZnCl 2 -mediated soaking process. This innovative hydrogel leverages acrylamide/acrylic acid (AM/AA) monomers as a polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (PDES), enhancing its structural integrity. Notably, the hydrogel exhibits remarkable properties, including a minimal water loss rate of less than 5 %, a peak compressive stress of 0.28 MPa, Young's modulus of 0.015 MPa, a minimum impedance of 500 Ω, and an impressive conductivity of 8.0 × 10 −4 S/m. Furthermore, when integrated into a sensor, it demonstrates a sensitivity factor (GF) of 0.08 KPa −1 . Selecting this advanced hydrogel as the foundation for a piezoresistive stress sensor, we investigated its capability to detect subtle bodily motions. Our findings underscore the sensor's remarkable versatility; it not only promptly registers significant arm and wrist movements but also meticulously captures delicate throat movements during swallowing, finger flexion, and even the weight distribution when gripping heavier objects. This (PAM-PAA)/LCNC/SA-Zn 2+ hydrogel-based sensor holds immense potential for many applications, including wearable technology, smart devices, health monitoring systems, and human motion recognition platforms. Its ability to accurately track and interpret a range of bodily movements and pressures underscores its significance in advancing the field of personal health tracking and interactive technologies.
