Conductive hydrogels have garnered substantial research attention owing to their exceptional flexibility, remarkable stretchability, and superior electrical conductivity. In this study, polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (PAM/CMC) double-network hydrogels were synthesized via a one-pot method, followed by in situ surface polymerization of the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on the hydrogel surface. Additionally, the freeze-resistance and moisture-retention properties of the hydrogel were enhanced through glycerol immersion, leading to the development of a PAM/CMC/PEDOT/Glycerol (MCPG) composite hydrogel with enhanced conductive performance. The MCPG composite conductive hydrogel exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, including an extraordinary tensile strain capacity (1750 %), excellent anti-freezing performance (maintaining flexibility at − 20 °C), and superior moisture retention capability. The strain sensor fabricated using MCPG hydrogel demonstrates an ultra-wide detection range (0–500 %), high sensitivity (GF = 5.65), and rapid response/recovery characteristics (300 ms), enabling comprehensive monitoring of various human joint movements. Furthermore, the triboelectric nanogenerator assembled with MCPG hydrogel (MCPG-TENG) exhibits exceptional electrical output performance, achieving an open-circuit voltage of approximately 118 V. This device is capable of powering small electronic devices and enabling information transmission. Consequently, the high-performance flexible sensors and TENGs developed in this study, based on the self-assembly of PEDOT on the hydrogel surface and leveraging their superior stretchability and stable conductive properties, hold broad application potential in the fields of intelligent human–machine interfaces and wearable electronic devices.

Achieving high performance conductive hydrogel sensor which is capable of combining as many advantages as possible in one is highly desired to satisfy real-world tasks. To this end, novel hydrogel sensors PVA/NaDa (polyvinyl alcohol/D-Gluconic acid sodium salt) and PVA/NaLa (polyvinyl alcohol/L-Glutamic acid monosodium salt) have been successfully constructed via a facile and effective strategy. The hydrogels realize the combination of robust mechanical properties (stress, strain, elastic modulus, toughness, fatigue resistance, anti-breakage ability and recovery performance), excellent conductivity, sensitive sensitivity, rapid response capacity and high cytocompatibility. The increasing hydrogen bond cross-linking density and hydrogen bond interactions of NaDa (NaLa) with PVA are mainly responsible for significantly intensified mechanical properties of PVA/NaDa and PVA/NaLa hydrogels. Benefiting from the prominent performances, the hydrogels can be processed into flexible membrane sensors to not only effectively detect the human joint motions but also sensitively simulate manual control of the mobile phone screen for writing text, demonstrating a promising application in multifunctional intelligent robots, electronic skins, artificial intelligence and among others.

Great progress has been recently made in flexible and stretchable electronics. However, realizing the conformal contact between sensors and human skin as well as the visualization of human–machine interfaces is still a challenging task. Here, self-adhesive hydrogels with high transparency are successfully fabricated by a facile one-pot radical polymerization of acrylamide (AAm) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) in the presence of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) as a model nucleotide. The addition of a nucleotide makes the hydrogels promising conductors with robust adhesiveness, excellent mechanical behavior, and high optical transparency (transmittance of 94%). Remarkably, the hydrogels can conformally adhere to human skin and adapt its dynamic motions, which can work as skin-attachable wearable strain sensors for accurately monitoring human joint motions, breathing and voice signals. And the hydrogels are capable of perceiving pressure variations for the detection of human movement states, including walking, jogging, and jumping. Besides, the hydrogels featuring high transparency allow creating visual human–machine interfaces for clearly observing the skin condition in real time. This work proposes an innovative and facile strategy for the design of promising soft materials for sophisticated human–machine interfaces.

To enlarge the linear detection range without sacrificing the sensitivity is one of the urgent problems in the development of high-performance piezoresistive flexible sensors. Inspired by a multilayer corrugated board, this study develops a new multilayer microspherical sensor in which conductive core-shell SiO 2 /Polyaniline (PANI) (PS) microspheres serve as active particles, while insulated silk fibroin (SF)/poly lactic- co -glycolic acid (PLGA) (SP) fibers are used as the support. The size of conductive microspheres attached to the insulated layer is controllable. The multiple layers of assembly endow the flexible sensor with a high sensitivity (0.071 kPa −1 ) and a wide linear detection (from 10 Pa to 380 kPa) simultaneously. This corrugated sensor also have a fast response time (145 ms) and an excellent durability (over 2000 cycles), and it can be used to detect human joint pressure signals and transmit encrypted information. Moreover, flexible keyboard, safety protection of machinery, as well as object position tracking can be achieved based on this sensor. Most importantly, the sensor encapsulated by biological polysaccharide kappa-carrageenan (KC) is skin-friendly and breathable, and it can be decomposed in 90 °C hot water. In conclusion, this multilayer microspherical sensor presents great potential for flexible wearable devices.

In this research, we introduce a novel nanotubular-aerogel/hydrogel hybrid (NAHH), a promising material for wearable motion sensors, which combines poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogel with a polypyrrole (PPy) nanotubular-aerogel network to form a hierarchically porous structure. The NAHH outperforms its individual components in terms of mechanical properties, with an fracture toughness of ∼97 kPa for NAHH-1, compared to ∼1.8 kPa and ∼15.3 kPa for PPy nanotubular-aerogel and PAA hydrogel, respectively. The hybrid material also exhibits robust adhesion to a variety of substrates, including porcine skin, with tensile and shear adhesive strengths of ∼54.7 ± 8.4 kPa and ∼58.1 ± 4.4 kPa, respectively. The incorporation of didecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) imbues the NAHH with effective antibacterial properties against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The biocompatibility of the NAHH is further confirmed through a live/dead assay using murine fibroblast 3T3 cells. The NAHH-based motion sensors excel in real-time monitoring of bending and extending motions across various human joints, underscoring their potential for wearable electronic applications. This study presents a versatile platform for the creation of advanced multifunctional materials, with implications for the future of wearable electronics, bioelectronics, and tissue engineering.
