MXene/TPU Composite Film for Humidity Sensing and Human Respiration Monitoring

Tianqing Liu,Danyao Qu,Lihao Guo,Gandong Zhou,Guangjian Zhang,Tao Du,Weiwei Wu

Human respiration reflects abundant physiological information and could enable non-invasive monitoring, providing information about various biological parameters such as respiration rate and depth. The rapidly growing field of humidity sensors bring forward the requirement for good performance. In this work, by virtue of good hydrophilicity and conductivity, a MXene/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composite film is prepared by coating MXene nanosheets on chitosan-modified TPU electrospun nanofibers via electrostatic interactions, for fabricating a humidity sensor. Based on the principle that the tunnel resistance changing with water molecules influences the distance of MXene nanosheets, the MXene/TPU humidity sensor exhibits fast response (12 s), wide humidity response range (11–94% RH), low hysteresis (<7% RH), and excellent repeatability. The humidity sensor can be assembled with a face mask for distinguishing different human respiration patterns and accurately monitoring respiratory signals during different physical activities, suggesting its promising applications in the fields of respiratory monitoring.

Proton-Conductive COF Evenly Embedded Cellulose Aerogels toward Water Harvesting and Spontaneous Sustained Power Generation from Ambient Moisture and Human Respiration

Xiuli Xie,Xiaotong Wang,Yang Zhang,Long Fang,Jiangshan Feng,Shaohong Liu,Dingshan Yu,Fangming Zhu,Xudong Chen

Herein, we develop a new intelligent moisture-sensitive hybrid aerogel by evenly embedding a proton-conductive covalent organic framework (COF-2SO3H) into a carboxylated cellulose nanofiber network (CNF-C) for water harvesting and spontaneous sustained electricity production from ambient humidity and human respiration. Our strategy first exploits the “suspending agent” role of CNF-C to stably disperse COF materials in water for forming uniform hierarchical hybrid structures. By utilizing the synergy of COF-2SO3H and CNF-C together with their inherent structure merits and surface group effects, the hybrid aerogel displays increased water uptake and ion conductivity. Upon asymmetric moisturization, it can create a self-maintained moisture gradient to engender a concentration difference for mobile Na+ and H+, resulting in efficient charge separation and diffusion. Thus, the hybrid aerogel-based coin-type generator achieves a continuous output voltage of ∼0.55 V for at least 5 h in ambient environments in contrast to that using pure CNF-C and carbon-based generators with transient voltage response. Intriguingly, the wearable generator with an aerogel in a mask is more sensitive to human respiration and achieves repeatable and reliable self-charge for persistent electricity along with an increased output voltage of up to 1.0 V and much faster self-charge (only 3 min), both of which surpass most reported moisture-enabled generators.

Ultra-thin, transparent, anti-freezing organohydrogel film responded to a wide range of humidity and temperature

Yang Gao,Fei Jia,Guanghui Gao

Hydrogel flexible sensors have attracted significant attention in wearable devices because of their inherent stretchability and good mechanical properties. However, most hydrogel sensors reported are only limited to detect strain activity based on flexible and stretchable strain sensing, which cannot provide real-time feedback on the humidity and temperature of the skin surface, this limits the scope of the application of hydrogel sensors. In this work, we fabricate an organohydrogel film sensor with a thickness of only 0.1 mm which is sensitive to humidity and temperature. The prepared organohydrogel film sensor has a wide relative humidity (RH) (20%–90%) and temperature (–30 °C–50 °C) detection range, which can accurately record and respond to changes in humidity and temperature on the skin surface. Because of high sensitivity to humidity and temperature, the sensor can stably and repeatedly monitor human respiration with a fast response and recovery time of only 0.41 s and 0.3 s. In addition, the organohydrogel film sensor also has high transparency and anti-freezing properties, which can be precisely attached to the accurate area of skin to monitor signals at low temperatures. Therefore, this work is expected to bring new strategies to construct a new generation of electronic skin sensors and wearable devices that detect multiple stimuli.

Surface Defects of Electron Irradiation Engineering for Graphene/Polymer Composite-Based Flexible Humidity Sensors

Xiaoqing Yue,Jianqun Yang,Xigang Zhu,Xuewen Wang,Yuhang Jing,Weiqi Li,Lei Dong,Yubao Zhang,Hao Jiang,Xingji Li

A facile approach for surface defect engineering based on high-energy electron irradiation is proposed here to produce a graphene/polymer composite flexible humidity sensor with high humidity resistance and responsiveness. The responsiveness of the graphene/polymer composite humidity sensor following electron irradiation was ∼22.4-fold greater than the unirradiated humidity sensor. When the relative humidity was 97.3%, the responsiveness of the sensor was 1.2 × 105. In addition, the irradiated humidity sensor maintained an excellent response after 10 water resistance tests. Furthermore, material characterization techniques demonstrated that graphene/polymer composite materials with low crosslinking density could be produced by electron irradiation at the appropriate fluence. Concurrently, the specific surface area of the graphene/polymer composite material was increased, and several oxygen-containing functional groups were generated, providing more active sites for water molecules to enhance the stability and responsiveness of the sensor. Thus, the irradiated graphene/polymer composite humidity sensor has potential applications in human respiratory monitoring and noncontact switching. Moreover, the surface defect engineering of electron irradiation provides a facile strategy for obtaining graphene/polymer composite flexible humidity sensors with high comprehensive properties.

High performance humidity sensor based on 3D mesoporous Co3O4 hollow polyhedron for multifunctional applications

Yajie Zhang,Yingwei Wu,Zaihua Duan,Bohao Liu,Qiuni Zhao,Zhen Yuan,Shaorong Li,Junge Liang,Yadong Jiang,Huiling Tai

In this work, the three-dimensional (3D) hollow mesoporous Co 3 O 4 was successfully prepared by calcining the Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67). As-obtained Co 3 O 4 inherited the rhombohedral framework structure of ZIF-67 and possessed mesoporous and hollow structure. Further, the humidity sensor based on Co 3 O 4 was fabricated, and its humidity sensing properties were investigated at room temperature (25 °C). The results indicated that the Co 3 O 4 humidity sensor exhibited high humidity sensing performance with a wide linear detection range (10%−95% relative humidity (RH)), small humidity hysteresis (2.6% RH), and fast response/recovery times (1.0/13.5 s). In particular, the Co 3 O 4 humidity sensor was of high detection resolution (1% RH). The excellent performance was attributed to the strong hydrophilicity and the unique 3D porous structure of Co 3 O 4 . In addition, the potential applications of the fabricated Co 3 O 4 humidity sensor in skin humidity, simulated diaper, human breathing, and non-contact switch were demonstrated. This work provides a promising humidity sensing material for fabricating high-performance humidity sensors.
