High-Performance Multipedal Shape Strain Sensors for Human Motion and Electrophysiological Signal Monitoring

Gen Li,Rongtai Wan,Shuhan Liu,Lina Wang,Mangmang Yu,Jiang Zhong,Hanjun Yang,Ximei Liu,Baoyang Lu

Strain sensors from conducting polymer hydrogel have been widely employed in various wearable devices, electronic skins, and biomedical applications. These sensors provide outstanding flexibility and high sensitivity by integrating conducting polymer with hydrogels, making them particularly suitable for monitoring human motion and physiological signals like heart rate or muscle activity. Despite their extensive application potential, conducting polymer hydrogel face several technical challenges in practical use, including poor mechanical properties, lack of long-term stability, and difficulty in customizable design. This work introduces a method for fabricating a multipedal strain sensor using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)hydrogels through screen printing and demonstrates its application in human motion monitoring. The multipedal strain sensor demonstrates a low Young's modulus (200 kPa), high stretchability (400%), and excellent mechanical cyclic stability (3000 cycles). Furthermore, this strain sensor is further applied to detect human movements such as chewing, smiling, fist clenching, arm bending, and carotid pulse monitoring. Comparative analysis between the multipedal-designed sensor and the non-designed sensor highlights the enhanced sensing capabilities of the multipedal sensor. The design of this multipedal sensor holds the potential to broaden the design concepts for strain sensors and offers new insights for wearable devices and electronic skins.

Mechanically Interlocked Hydrogel–Elastomer Strain Sensor with Robust Interface and Enhanced Water—Retention Capacity

Wenyu Zhao,Zhuofan Lin,Xiaopu Wang,Ziya Wang,Zhenglong Sun

Hydrogels are stretchable ion conductors that can be used as strain sensors by transmitting strain-dependent electrical signals. However, hydrogels are susceptible to dehydration in the air, leading to a loss of flexibility and functions. Here, a simple and general strategy for encapsulating hydrogel with hydrophobic elastomer is proposed to realize excellent water-retention capacity. Elastomers, such as polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS), whose hydrophobicity and dense crosslinking network can act as a barrier against water evaporation (lost 4.6 wt.% ± 0.57 in 24 h, 28 °C, and ≈30% humidity). To achieve strong adhesion between the hydrogel and elastomer, a porous structured thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is used at the hydrogel-elastomer interface to interlock the hydrogel and bond the elastomer simultaneously (the maximum interfacial toughness is over 1200 J/m2). In addition, a PDMS encapsulated ionic hydrogel strain sensor is proposed, demonstrating an excellent water-retention ability, superior mechanical performance, highly linear sensitivity (gauge factor = 2.21, at 100% strain), and robust interface. Various human motions were monitored, proving the effectiveness and practicability of the hydrogel-elastomer hybrid.Keywords:hydrogel-elastomer hybrid;interlocked interface;human motion monitoring

Facile fabrication of superhydrophobic, flame-retardant and conductive cotton fabric for human motion detection

Gao Shan,Li Hongqiang,Guan Hang,Zheng Longzhu,Lai Xuejun,Chen Wanjuan,Zeng Xingrong

The inherent hydrophilicity, flammability and electrical insulation of pristine cotton fabric (CF) severely restrict their applications in many traditional fields including tents, umbrellas and outdoor jackets and some emerging fields such as wearable electronics. Herein, we report a facile approach to fabricate multifunctional CF with superhydrophobicity, flame-retardancy and electrical conductivity via layer-by-layer assembly and spray-coating. Specifically, the pristine CF was alternately covered with branched polyethyleneimine modified halloysite nanotubes (P-HNTs) and phytic acid (PA), followed by a sprayed layer of octadecylamine modified carboxylated carbon nanotube (CNT-ODA)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hybrid coating. The obtained multifunctional CF exhibited superhydrophobicity with a high water contact angle (WCA) of 162° and excellent surface stability. Owing to the physical barrier roles of the HNT layer, intumescent char layer by the N-P synergy of b-PEI and PA and the CNT/Si–C compounds after the pyrolysis of the outer CNT-ODA/PDMS layer, the SFRC-CF exhibited good thermal stability and outstanding flame-retardant performance. Furthermore, the SFRC-CF based piezoresistive pressure sensor had the advantages of stable resistance signal and good repeatability, and was successfully applied for detecting different human behavior even under wet environment. Our findings conceivably stand out as a new methodology to fabricate multifunctional cotton fabrics for practical applications in the fields of wearable devices and flexible electronics. Conductive MXene/cotton fabric based pressure sensor with both high sensitivity and wide sensing range for human motion detection and E-skin

Yanjun Zheng,Rui Yin,Ye Zhao,Hu Liu,Dianbo Zhang,Xianzhang Shi,Bing Zhang,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

Flexible wearable pressure sensors have attracted tremendous interest for applications in human health monitoring, electronic skin, artificial intelligence and so on. However, it is still a critical challenge for pressure sensors to simultaneously achieve high sensitivity and wide sensing range while performing well in response time, stability, reliability and wearing comfortability. Here, conductive MXene/cotton fabric was fabricated using the simple dip-coating technique and then sandwiched between polydimethylsiloxane film and an interdigitated electrode for flexible wearable piezoresistive pressure sensor. The abundant hydroxyl groups of cotton fabric and functional groups of MXene were beneficial for the good adhesion of conductive MXene nanosheets onto the entangled fiber networks, constructing effective conductive network. Taking advantage of the excellent flexibility and three-dimensional porous structure of cotton fabric and the special sandwich architecture of the sensor, the MXene/cotton fabric (MCF) based pressure sensor exhibited high sensitivity (5.30 kPa −1 in the pressure range of 0–1.30 kPa), broad sensing range (0–160 kPa), rapid response/recovery time (50 ms/20 ms), excellent stability and long-term durability. Moreover, the MCF based pressure sensor can be employed to detect and distinguish various human health signals, including finger motion, early stage Parkinson’s static tremor and wrist pulse. Importantly, E-skin was also designed based on the MCF based pressure sensor for the recognition of different tactile stimuli, exhibiting promising potential in next generation wearable electronics.

Multiresponsive MXene (Ti3C2Tx)-Decorated Textiles for Wearable Thermal Management and Human Motion Monitoring

Chang Ma,Qi Yuan,Haishun Du,Ming-Guo Ma,Chuanling Si,Pengbo Wan

Over the past few years, wearable electronics and smart textiles have seen tremendous growth in both academia and industries. However, it is still a challenge to prepare robust, flexible, wearable, and multiresponsive textile electronics. A newly blooming two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbide/nitride (MXene) is regarded as an ideal active material to build multifunctional electronics due to its intriguing properties. Herein, a hydrophobic and multifunctional textile composite (Si-MAP) was prepared by decoration of conductive MXene nanosheets onto air-laid paper, followed by wrapping with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). These obtained smart textiles exhibited excellent electronic/photonic/mechanical triresponsive properties: Si-MAPs could reach high equilibrium temperatures (104.9 and 118.7 °C) under quite low power illumination (1.25 W cm–2) and working voltage (4 V). The Si-MAP pressure sensor exhibited high sensitivity and rapid response time (30–40 ms), which can capture a wide range of human movements. Moreover, the thin PDMS layer not only rendered the textile composites hydrophobic but also improved the stability and adaptation for daily use. Remarkably, the hydrophobic Si-MAPs have maintained the advantages of breathability and washability, which make them suitable for wearing. Thus, this smart Si-MAP textile provides a reference for the study of the next generation of light, portable, and wearable textile-based electronic devices.

Transparent, highly stretchable, adhesive, and sensitive ionic conductive hydrogel strain sensor for human motion monitoring

Jie Ren,Meng Li,Ruirui Li,Xuemiao Wang,Yan Li,Wu Yang

Due to the flexibility, ductility and tensile properties , hydrogel is considered as promising candidates for the new generation of wearable flexible devices. However, it is still a challenge to endow multiple functions such as excellent conductivity, high stretchability, self-healing, self-adhesion, and biocompatibility in one hydrogel network. Herein, a two-step method was used to prepare multifunctional transparent tannic acid/sodium alginate/polyacrylic acid/carboxymethyl cellulose/aluminum trichloride (SA/TA/PAA/CMC/Al(III)) hydrogels with high stretchability, toughness, adhesion, and conductivity. This hydrogel can adhere to various substrates both organic and inorganic materials . The highest adhesion strength of the hydrogels to the iron sheet reaches 22.33 kPa with the fracture stress being 0.16 MPa and the toughness 1.01 MJ/m 3 . Moreover, the hydrogel exhibited repeatable and durable adhesion to human skin and could be peeled off completely without any residual, irritation or allergic reactions. Additionally, the hydrogels also have good repetitive adhesion and strain sensitivity. It was demonstrated that both large-scale and small-scale movements of the human body could be monitored by directly attached to various parts of the human body by the self-adhesion. This work provides a new prospect for the design of the biocompatible hydrogels with transparent, stretchable, self-adhesive, and strain-sensitive properties for potential applications in wearable electronic sensors.

Yifan Cui,Guolin Zheng,Zhe Jiang,Man Zhou,Ping Wang,Yuanyuan Yu,Qiang Wang

Long term working in humid and cold environment will leads to arthritis and rheumatism. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a long-term and stable heater for workers which working in special environments. Polydimethylsiloxane/Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/MWCNT-COOH@polyester-latex mesh fabric (PPM@PLF) with excellent duel-driven heating properties was prepared via an improved in situ enzymatic polymerization method. To obtain the sturdy and higher conductivity, MWCNT was used to complete the construction of weak conductive layer before coating the Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) to obtain more continuously conductive paths. PPM@PLF provided enough heat energy for human body and use as thermal therapy application. In addition, PPM@PLF could be used as a strain sensor due to its remarkable sensing property. In summary, we have obtained a multifunctional conductive textile via the green in situ enzymatic polymerization method.

Zhihua Zhao,Zijie Su,Chunhua Zheng,Guixin Jin,Lan Wu

Given the considerable harm that NO 2 poses to the environment and human health, developing reliable NO 2 detection sensors is crucial. Herein, a flexible, multifunctional sensor was successfully synthesized through hydrothermal and the wet impregnation methods using an elastic PU yarn as the substrate. This sensor, named Au/VTe 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x –PU, was characterized via X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy to analyze its structure, chemical valence states, and micromorphology. At room temperature (23 °C), the sensor demonstrated an exceptionally high response to NO 2 gas, with a response value of 1.72 at 50 ppm as well as low response and recovery time of 33 and 38 s. Additionally, testing of the strain performance of Au/VTe 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x –PU showed that this flexible sensor exhibits high strain sensitivity, excellent repeatability, and durability, making it suitable for detecting subtle human movements. Overall, the synthesized sensor is in considerable advantages in terms of both gas-sensing performance and tensile performance, exhibiting broad application prospects in human motion and health monitoring.

A flexible, adhesive and self-healable hydrogel-based wearable strain sensor for human motion and physiological signal monitoring

Shan Xia,Shixin Song,Fei Jia,Guanghui Gao

The advent of hydrogel-based strain sensors has attracted immense research interest in artificial intelligence, wearable devices, and health-monitoring systems. However, the integration of the synergistic characteristics of good mechanical properties, self-adhesiveness, self-healing capability and high strain sensitivity for fabricating hydrogel-based strain sensors is still a challenge. Here, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel composed of a polyacrylamide (PAAm)/chitosan (CS) hybrid network is fabricated for wearable strain sensors. The PAAm network is cross-linked by hydrophobic associations, and the CS network is ionically cross-linked by carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs). These two networks are further interlocked by physical entanglement and hydrogen bond interactions. The obtained hydrogels exhibit excellent flexibility, puncture resistance and self-healing capability because of the efficient energy dissipation of the dynamic cross-linking network. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibit self-adhesive behavior on various materials, including polytetrafluoroethylene, wood, glass, aluminum, rubber and skin. Notably, the hydrogels can be applied as soft human-motion sensors for real-time and accurate detection of both large-scale and small human activities, including joint motions, speaking, breathing, and even subtle blood pulsation. Therefore, it is anticipated that the flexible, self-adhesive, self-healing and conductive hydrogel-based strain sensor will have promising applications in artificial intelligence, soft robots, biomimetic prostheses, and personal health care.

Compressible and robust PANI sponge anchored with erected MXene flakes for human motion detection

Kangqi Chang,Le Li,Chao Zhang,Piming Ma,Weifu Dong,Yunpeng Huang,Tianxi Liu

Advanced pressure sensors featuring high compressibility , high sensitivity, fast response time, and superior stability have attracted tremendous research attention because of their potential applications in artificial intelligence technology and wearable electronics. In this work, a robust sponge-like piezoresistive pressure sensor with remarkable elasticity and high sensitivity was fabricated by anchoring perpendicularly oriented MXene flakes on polyaniline (PANI) wrapped polymeric sponge via freeze-drying-assisted depositing strategy. Owing to the stable 3D conducting networks provided by PANI sponge and the intimate electrical contact between erected MXene flakes upon subtle deformation, good sensitivity, wide working range, low detection limit, fast response and recovery times, and excellent durability can be simultaneously obtained. Furthermore, various physiological activities (speech recognition, swallowing, joint movement, etc.) can also be detected in real-time and wireless manner by the flexible MXene/PANI sponge sensors, demonstrating their great potential in low-cost and high-performance wearable piezoresistive pressure sensing devices.

However, it is still a challenge to achieve conductive hydrogels with integrated high performances, including high strength , large stretchability, high toughness, rapid self-recovery and good self-healing. In the present work, multiple physically cross-linked conductive hydrogels with integrated high performances were fabricated by in situ doping conductive PEDOT:PSS during the formation of dual physically cross-linked poly(N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide)/Laponite hydrogels. At the optimal condition, the conductive gels exhibit high tensile strength , high extensibility, high tearing energy, rapid self-recovery property without any external stimuli, high conductivity, good self-healing property, as well as sensitive strain sensing for monitoring human activities (e.g. the movements of the finger and wrist, and tiny breathing movements). Considering easy preparation and integrated high performances, our conductive gels have potential applications in wearable electronic sensors and bioelectronics.

3D printable, stretchable, anti-freezing and rapid self-healing organogel-based sensors for human motion detection

Juan Zhang,Yanen Wang,Qinghua Wei,Mingyang Li,Xiaohu Chen

Self-healing hydrogels have promising applications in sensors and wearable devices . However, self-healing hydrogels prepared with water as the dispersion medium inevitably freeze at sub-zero temperature, resulting in a loss of the self-healing and sensing ability. The black phosphorene / ethylene glycol / polyvinyl alcohol / sodium tetraborate / sodium alginate (BP/EG-SPB) organogels were prepared by 3D printing technology and solvent displacement method. The organogel exhibits high stretchability (1900 % strain), excellent self-healing property (25 s) and outstanding anti-freezing property (lower than −120 °C freezing point). Furthermore, the organogel can rapidly self-healed (150 s) at a low temperature (−80 °C) without any external stimulation. Additionally, this organogel-based flexible sensor possesses excellent sensitivity (gauge factor: 28.66 at 1900 % strain) and fast response capability, allowing for effective detection of human motion. This work provides a novel method for preparing multifunctional organogel-based sensors for use in harsh climates.
