Radiative cooling is an emerging zero-energy-consumption technology for human body cooling in outdoor scenarios during hot seasons. However, existing radiative cooling textiles are limited by low intrinsic cooling power, high hydrophobicity, and heat-insulating properties, which seriously impede a satisfying cooling effect, perspiration-wicking, and heat dissipation, thus limiting human thermal comfort in practical situations. Here, we developed a radiative cooling meta-fabric that was integrated with high perspiration-wicking and thermal conduction capacity. The meta-fabric included a polyoxymethylene (POM) nanotextile on the front side as a selective radiative emitter, a skin-friendly silicone on the reverse side as a thermal conductor, and patterned bamboo yarns (a cellulose fiber derived from bamboo with excellent hydrophilicity) as the water transport channels. As a result, the meta-fabric could rapidly wick away perspiration (within seconds) and had a high thermal conductivity of 1.5 W/(m·K), exhibiting high-performance human body cooling with a temperature of 10.9 °C lower than the meta-fabric without perspiration. Besides, even without perspiration, the meta-fabric still exhibited a temperature of 9.6 °C lower than commercial cotton fabrics. The work provides an alternative method to design smart textiles for personal thermal management in real applications.

The development of a textile that cools skin both in sunshine and in room can not only protect the human body from a severely hot working environment but also save energy by lowering air conditioner load. Herein, we have developed a concept that combines solar energy reflection and “passive radiative cooling” for strengthening both solar energy blocking and heat dissipation through long-wave infrared (LWIR) radiation at wavelengths of 8–13 μm. The current technique is achieved by coating a textile with an Al 2 O 3 dispersed-cellulose acetate. Cellulose acetate possesses high emissivity in the LWIR region , which can promote effective LWIR radiation (2.5–25 μm). Al 2 O 3 has a high thermal conductivity (30–40 W m −1 K −1 ) and can enhance solar energy reflectivity . By coating Al 2 O 3 -cellulose acetate, solar energy reflectivity of the textile significantly increases from 62.6% to 80.1% (0.3–2.6 μm). A cooling performance experiment reveals that this modified textile can reduce the temperature of simulated skin by 2.3–8 °C compared to that of an unmodified reference. Furthermore, in a real-life cooling performance experiment, a modified T-shirt can avoid the overheating of actual human skin by 0.6–1.0 °C, corresponding to a temperature decrease by 1.9–3.3 °C for the internal surface of the textile. This work provides a method for the design and synthesis of radiative cooling textiles for personal thermal management.

Fabrics which can keep people cool in a hot climate have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Among various cooling strategies, fabric cooling by water evaporation is proved to be very safe, simple and sustainable. Here, a tri-layer laminated fabric (TLF) inspired by perspiration is designed to realize passive cooling of human body. An interlayer fabric which is coated with crosslinked sodium polyacrylate can absorb and store a large amount of water. A moisture-absorbing and quick-drying fabric is used as the outer layer while a waterproof breathable fabric is used on the inside of the laminate in contact with skin. The prepared TLF shows decent evaporative cooling performance under dry heat conditions. The water absorbency of TLF is about 400% higher than that of pristine cotton after 1 h soaking in water. Under a 1 sun irradiation (1000 W m −2 ), the indoor temperature of a simulated room can be reduced by ≈5–7 °C compared with the other without a cooling system. Meanwhile, the evaporative cooling effect can be maintained up to 5 h. This cooling fabric shows broad application prospects in the fields of thermal cooling to human and buildings.

Traditional cellulose fabric with high hydrophilic distinction realizes personal thermal management via perspiration-induced cooling for the human body. However, such behavior is restricted in high-humidity environments, where sweat/water transports from a high-humidity environment to the human body by hydrophilic cellulose fabric. Herein, we developed an environmentally friendly, low-cost, large-scale Janus cellulose fabric via one-side hydrophobic modification of hydrophilic cellulose. Our Janus cellulose fabric comprises hydrophobic cellulose side (water contact angle of 151°) and hydrophilic cellulose side (water contact angle of 19°). Such distinction endows Janus cellulose fabric with unidirectional water-transport capability, where water molecules are inclined to transport, diffuse and evaporate on the hydrophilic cellulose (diffusion area of 50 μl water is around 0.8 cm 2 ) rather than the hydrophobic cellulose (less and even negligible diffusion area), correspondingly spontaneously leading to a 3–4 ℃ temperature drop of the human body when covering Janus cellulose fabric than pristine cellulose fabric. Janus cellulose fabric paves the way toward green, cost-effective, and cooling fabric in our sustainable society.

It is essential and challenging to develop sustainable and durable passive radiative cooling materials for long-term effectively maintaining human thermal comfort when undergoing intensified global warming in our low-carbon society. Herein, inspired by the distinct structure-property relationship of fruits-branches in fruiter, this work designs an approach of fibrillation of cellulosic fibers (branches of fruiter) followed by in-situ synthesis of SiO 2 nanoparticles (fruits of fruiter) easily to prepare sustainable, robust, customizable, and scalable cooling cellulose fabric. Such coupling strategy of cellulosic-fiber fibrillation and SiO 2 in-situ growth strongly roughens cellulose fabric, more specifically, sufficient micro- and nano-sized cellulose fibrils and SiO 2 particles, which enables our cooling cellulose fabric to effectively reflect solar light with 97% reflectance (0.4–1.0 µm) and emit mid-infrared light with 0.97 emissivity (8–13 µm). As a result, the developed cooing cellulose fabric spontaneously cools the human body with a temperature drop of 7.4 °C in high-temperature summer. It should be noted that the developed strategy realizes extraordinary adhesion performance between nanosized SiO 2 and fibrillated cellulosic fibers , endowing cooling cellulose fabric with durable yet effective cooling distinction despite enduring 100-time mechanical washing and 100-day exposure to air, as well as high strength (∼48 MPa), desirable moisture evaporation rate and breathability . The present work demonstrates a promising strategy how durability, functionality, and customizability can be integrated in future material design.

Radiative cooling textiles dissipate human body heat without any energy input, providing a sustainable means for personal thermal management. However, there is still a lack of textile materials to support efficient cooling in varied outdoor and indoor environments. Here we show a polyoxymethylene (POM) nanotextile design that not only achieves selective emission in the atmospheric window (8–13 μm) but also shows transmission in the remaining mid-infrared wavebands and reflection of sunlight (0.3–2.5 μm). As a result, the POM textile achieves efficient radiative human body cooling both outdoors (under sunny and cloudy conditions) and indoors (0.5–8.8 °C lower than typical textiles). Moreover, the textile design shows favourable wearability and outperforms its commercial counterparts when used as protective clothing. The POM material provides both indoor and outdoor human body cooling and introduces new possibilities in the rational design of next-generation smart textiles and other applications supporting sustainability.
