Crystal Water Boosted Zn2+ Transfer Kinetics in Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase for High-Rate and Durable Zn Anodes

Hongrun Jin,Simin Dai,Zehao Zhu,Yongxin Luo,Bei Qi,Kaisi Liu,Tao Wu,Xinyan Zhuang,Jun Zhou,Liang Huang

The commercialization of aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) is seriously hindered by the inferior stability of the Zn anode, which principally originates from water-induced side reactions and dendrite issues. Interfacial engineering has been considered as a cost-effective way to tackle these bottlenecks. However, most artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) suffers from sluggish Zn2+ migration and thus compromises the kinetic merits of aqueous ZIBs especially at ultrahigh rates. Herein, we present a unique H2O molecules-rich zinc phytate (PAZn) interphase for the optimization of Zn anodes. The critical role of crystal water on the Zn2+ transport process is demonstrated. Benefiting from the shielding effect, the Zn2+ diffusion coefficient increases by orders of magnitude in the presence of crystal water. Accordingly, the Zn anode modified by PAZn interphase delivers an impressive lifespan of 1200 h and dramatically reduced voltage hysteresis even under an ultrahigh current density of 10 mA cm–2, and it remains stable even at a higher Zn utilization exceeding 50%. Moreover, the V2O5//PAZn@Zn full cell exhibits remarkable performance with a high capacity retention of 89.3% after 600 cycles. This work provides an effective strategy for rationally designing highly Zn2+-conductive artificial SEI for durable Zn anodes and high-performance commercially available ZIBs.

Formation of an Artificial Mg2+-Permeable Interphase on Mg Anodes Compatible with Ether and Carbonate Electrolytes

Yaqi Li,Pengjian Zuo,Ruinan Li,Hua Huo,Yulin Ma,Chunyu Du,YunZhi Gao,Geping Yin,Robert S. Weatherup

Rechargeable Mg-ion batteries typically suffer from either rapid passivation of the Mg anode or severe corrosion of the current collectors by halogens within the electrolyte, limiting their practical implementation. Here, we demonstrate the broadly applicable strategy of forming an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (a-SEI) layer on Mg to address these challenges. The a-SEI layer is formed by simply soaking Mg foil in a tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether solution containing LiTFSI and AlCl3, with Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy measurements revealing spontaneous reaction with the Mg foil. The a-SEI is found to mitigate Mg passivation in Mg(TFSI)2/DME electrolytes with symmetric cells exhibiting overpotentials that are 2 V lower compared to when the a-SEI is not present. This approach is extended to Mg(ClO4)2/DME and Mg(TFSI)2/PC electrolytes to achieve reversible Mg plating and stripping, which is not achieved with bare electrodes. The interfacial resistance of the cells with a-SEI protected Mg is found to be two orders of magnitude lower than that with bare Mg in all three of the electrolytes, indicating the formation of an effective Mg-ion transporting interfacial structure. X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy measurements show that the a-SEI contains minimal MgCO3, MgO, Mg(OH)2, and TFSI–, while being rich in MgCl2, MgF2, and MgS, when compared to the passivation layer formed on bare Mg in Mg(TFSI)2/DME.

Decreasing Interfacial Pitfalls with Self-Grown Sheet-Like Li2S Artificial Solid-Electrolyte Interphase for Enhanced Cycling Performance of Lithium Metal Anode

Rui Zhang,Biao Chen,Chunsheng Shi,Junwei Sha,Liying Ma,Enzuo Liu,Naiqin Zhao

Constructing a 3D composite Li metal anode (LMA) along with the engineering of artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a promising strategy for achieving dendrite-free Li deposition and high cycling stability. The nanostructure of artificial SEI is closely related to the performance of the LMA. Herein, the self-grown process and morphology of in situ formed Li 2 S during lithiation of Cu x S is studied systematically, and a large-sized sheet-like Li 2 S layer as an artificial SEI is in situ generated on the inner surface of a 3D continuous porous Cu skeleton (3DCu@Li 2 S-S). The sheet-like Li 2 S layer with few interfacial pitfalls (Cu/Li 2 S heterogeneous interface) possesses enhanced diffusion of Li ions. And the continuous porous structure provides transport channels for lithium-ion transport. As a result, the 3DCu@Li 2 S-S presents a high Coulombic efficiency (99.3%), long cycle life (500 cycles), and high-rate performance (10 mA cm −2 ). Furthermore, Li/3DCu@Li 2 S anode fabricated by thermal infusion method inherits the synergistic advantages of sheet-like Li 2 S and continuous porous structure. The Li/3DCu@Li 2 S anode shows significantly enhanced cycling life in both liquid and solid electrolytes. This work provides a new concept to design artificial SEI for LMA with high safe and high performance.

Layered zirconium phosphate-based artificial solid electrolyte interface with zinc ion channels towards dendrite-free Zn metal anodes

Jianping Yan,Minghui Ye,Yufei Zhang,Yongchao Tang,Cheng Chao Li

The irrepressible demand for safe and renewable energy storage systems is spurring the rise of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Nonetheless, the severe dendrites growth and side reactions on Zn metal anode hinder the application of aqueous ZIBs. Herein, a versatile zirconium phosphate (ZrP)-based artificial solid electrolyte interface (ASEI) on Zn anode (Zn@ZrP) is constructed by spraying method to solve this dilemma. The unique layer structure and ion exchange properties of ZrP enable the formation of zinc ion channels in the interlayers of ZrP, which can redistribute the Zn 2+ ion flux and promote the transport of Zn 2+ ion at the interface of Zn anode. Moreover, the ZrP-based ASEI shows the merits of improved Zn 2+ desolvation capability, high ionic conductivity and thus greatly facilitates the Zn deposition kinetics. The results reveal that the ZrP-based ASEI improves the Coulombic efficiency to 99.6% for 2000 cycles and enables the Zn@ZrP symmetric cell to realize a dendrite-free plating/stripping with a low voltage hysteresis (45 mV) and a long lifespan (780 h) at 0.5 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the feasibility of Zn@ZrP is evaluated by coupling with common MnO 2 and V 2 O 5 as full batteries. Notably, the Zn@ZnP//V 2 O 5 cell exhibits outstanding cycling stability (a capacity retention of 72.8% after 5000 cycles).

In-situ construction of high-performance artificial solid electrolyte interface layer on anode surfaces for anode-free lithium metal batteries

Xiao Liu,Jingjing Liu,Huijuan Zhao,Chang Dong,Fengquan Liu,Lin Li

The electrochemical performance of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) was hampered by the uncontrolled growth of lithium (Li) dendrites. To address this issue, the extensive application of artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) coatings on anode surfaces emerged as an effective solution. Electrospinning, as an innovative technique for fabricating artificial SEI layers on the surface of copper (Cu) foil, effectively mitigated Li volume strain during cycling. In this study, an electrospun organic–inorganic composite nanofiber membrane was in-situ fabricated on Cu foil, serving as an artificial SEI layer (CuWs) for anode-free LMBs (AF-LMBs) to enhance battery performance. Lithiophilic polyvinylpyrrolidone was used as the polymer matrix, and Cu nitrate served as the inorganic functional particles capable of in-situ redox reactions. The CuWs with their three-dimensional (3D) network structure accommodated electrode volume changes and suppressed Li dendrite growth during Li deposition and stripping. Additionally, CuWs facilitated the in-situ generation of Li nitrate (LiNO 3 ), which helped stabilize SEI layer and enhance Li utilization. The release sites of LiNO 3 on the nanofibers enabled the in-situ reduction of metallic Cu, providing nucleation sites for Li deposition and forming the 3D ion–electron hybrid conductive networks. This CuWs layer reduced interfacial resistance and nucleation barriers, promoting uniform Li + distribution on the anode surface. Li-Cu cells incorporating CuWs exhibited remarkable cycling stability, enduring over 460 cycles at 1.0 mA cm −2 and 1.0 mAh cm −2 with an average Coulombic efficiency of over 98.6 %. In Li-poor cells, the LFP|PE|CuWs achieved stable cycling for more than 30 cycles at 1.0 C, with a capacity retention rate of 92.0 %. These findings demonstrated that the CuWs membrane significantly enhanced the electrochemical performance of Li-poor cells and provided a novel artificial SEI protective strategy for advanced AF-LMBs with high energy density.

Sacrificial Poly(propylene carbonate) Membrane for Dispersing Nanoparticles and Preparing Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase on Li Metal Anode

Qipeng Yu,Weicong Mai,Weijiang Xue,Guiyin Xu,Qi Liu,Kun Zeng,Yuanming Liu,Feiyu Kang,Baohua Li,Ju Li

Lithium-metal batteries have been regarded as next-generation high-energy-density candidates beyond lithium-ion batteries. However, the lithium-morphology instabilities accompanied by continuous side reactions with electrolytes inevitably leads to dissatisfactory performances and even safety issues, where the unstable interface between lithium-metal anode and electrolytes has been regarded as the root cause. Artificial solid electrolyte interphase engineering has attracted a lot of attention to stabilize lithium-metal anodes. Here, a novel method with universality is reported to produce the organic–inorganic artificial solid electrolyte interphase. Using poly(propylene carbonate) as a sacrificial matrix, nanoparticles are dispersed on lithium-metal anodes surface uniformly to prepare artificial solid electrolyte interphase, where poly(propylene carbonate) turns into liquid propylene carbonate upon contact with lithium-metal anode. Silicon, Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3, or Li1.4Al0.4Ti1.6(PO4)3 nanoparticles are coated to suppress lithium-morphology instabilities and demonstrated ∼4 times longer cycle life. Preparing various organic/inorganic artificial solid electrolyte interphase is feasible by introducing various components in the fabrication process of poly(propylene carbonate) membrane, endowing this approach with huge potential in the research of artificial solid electrolyte interphase.

A Facile Surface Passivation Method to Stabilized Lithium Metal Anodes Facilitate the Practical Application of Quasi-Solid-State Batteries

Kangsheng Huang,Jiahui Yu,Langyuan Wu,Zhiwei Li,Hai Xu,Hui Dou,Xiaogang Zhang

Lithium metal anode matching solid electrolyte is an effective way to achieve high safety and high specific energy batteries, while the active interface of lithium metal has become a bottleneck problem that limits its application. Here, the challenges by forming an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (F-, B-containing) on lithium metal surface are surmounted. It demonstrates an extended cycling life over 2000 h of continuous plating/stripping at a high current density of 1.5 mA cm −2 . Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra prove the effectiveness of anion receptors for decoupling Li + -F − . The distribution and morphological features of the LiF/B artificial hybrid interphase can be observed from energy-dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Specifically, the treated metal lithium anode is also stable in the quasi-solid-state pouch cell (polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoro propylene-LLZTO) system, which can make the rotor of the small aircraft rotate quickly and stably for 9.2 min.

In Situ-Formed Dual-Conductive Protecting Layer for Dendrite-Free Li Metal Anodes in All-Solid-State Batteries

Yang Wu,Yuchan Zhang,Yongpeng Liu,Jinkui Feng

Lithium metal anode is regarded as one of the most promising electrode materials for high energy-rechargeable batteries. Nevertheless, the utilization of lithium metal anode suffers from the detrimental lithium dendrite growth caused by uneven lithium deposition. Herein, a dual-conductive protecting layer is formed in situ on a lithium metal surface as an artificial solid electrolyte interface, which is composed of electronic-conductive lithiophilic lithium–gallium alloy and lithium-ion-conductive lithium nitride. The protective layer can not only ensure uniform lithium-ion diffusion but also act as a nuclear agent to lower the deposition overpotential. With this artificial solid–electrolyte interface, the dendrite growth of lithium is significantly suppressed. Symmetric half cells and full cells with a modified lithium metal anode exhibit significantly improved electrochemical performance compared with the bare lithium metal anode.

Overcoming passivation in rechargeable magnesium batteries: Artificial solid-electrolyte interface for enhanced anode functionality

Lingxiao Luo,Xiaofang Yang,Zhipeng Gao,Xiaomei Li,Junyao Xu,Yongfeng Zhang,Rongrui Deng,Guangsheng Huang,Jingfeng Wang,Fusheng Pan

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have garnered significant attention in the field of energy storage. However, the use of a traditional electrolyte, Mg(TFSI) 2 /DME, leads to the passivation of the Mg metal anode (MMA), limiting the reversible deposition and dissolution process of Mg 2+ . Consequently, we propose a feasible method to modify the MMA, resulting in the formation of an artificial solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) coating rich in MgBr 2 , MgI 2 and Sb. This modification leads to substantial improvements in the interfacial kinetics and electrochemical properties of MMA, effectively suppressing the passivation reaction and significantly reducing the overpotential from 2 V to 0.3 V. Upon incorporating CuS/VS 4 cathode materials with a 0.15 M SbBr 3 modification, the discharge capacity reached 125 and 191 mAh·g −1 , respectively (compared to the initial capacity of 30 and 98 mAh·g −1 ) after 30 cycles. Similarly, with a 0.8 M SbI 3 modification, the battery exhibited capacities of 220 and 240 mAh·g −1 , respectively. Through a combination of experimental and computational analyses, we confirmed the uniform distribution of Sb, MgBr 2 and MgI 2 on the MMA surface and a substantial decrease in the diffusion barrier of Mg 2+ . This study presents a straightforward and efficient method for constructing an artificial SEI coating.

Stabilizing zinc metal anodes by artificial solid electrolyte interphase through a surface ion-exchanging strategy

Kaikai Hu,Xuze Guan,Ruijing Lv,Guojie Li,Zhenglin Hu,Libin Ren,Aoxuan Wang,Xingjiang Liu,Jiayan Luo

With rapid development of large-scale grid storage system, aqueous Zn batteries with features of superior safety, low cost and high energy density have attracted a growing number of researchers. However, severe corrosion and dendrite growth of Zn anodes have hindered their cycling performance and commercial application. Here, we fabricated an indium-based protective layer on Zn metal surface via a facile ion-exchange route. The insulating indium-based compounds provide necessary potential gradient to induce Zn plate underneath the coating film. Meanwhile, indium and its derivatives can effectively suppress corrosion and regulate Zn plating behavior due to unique physical and chemical properties. The symmetric cells with In-coated Zn anodes maintain stable stripping/plating process over 1400 h. Improved performance of full cells with modified Zn anode paired with α-MnO 2 cathode can be achieved. Our work provides a simple and convenient approach to upgrade corrosion-resistant technology of rechargeable aqueous battery systems.

In Situ-Formed Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Boosting the Cycle Stability of Si-Based Anodes for Li-Ion Batteries

Hui Wang,Mouren Miao,Hui Li,Yuliang Cao,Hanxi Yang,Xinping Ai

Si is being actively developed as one of the most promising high-capacity anodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, low cycling coulombic efficiency (CE) due to the repetitive growth of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film is still an issue for its application in full batteries. Here, we propose a strategy to in situ form an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (ASEI) on the ferrosilicon/carbon (FeSi/C) anode surface by a purposely designed nucleophilic reaction of polysulfides with vinylene carbonate (VC) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) molecules. The as-formed ASEI layer is mechanically dense and ionically conducting and therefore can effectively prevent the electrolyte infiltration and decomposition while allowing Li+ transport across, thus stabilizing the interface of the FeSi/C anode. As a result, the ASEI-modified FeSi/C anode exhibits a large reversible capacity of 1409.4 mA h g–1, an excellent cycling stability over 650 cycles, and a greatly elevated cycling CE of 99.8%, possibly serving as a high-capacity anode of LIBs.

Constructing fast-ion-conductive disordered interphase for high-performance zinc-ion and zinc-iodine batteries

Haijun Peng,Yun Fang,Jinzhe Wang,Pengchao Ruan,Yan Tang,Bingan Lu,Xinxin Cao,Shuquan Liang,Jiang Zhou

The issues of Zn dendrite and severe Zn 2+ transport destabilization in the electrode/electrolyte interface have been the main obstacles to the commercialization of aqueous Zn-based batteries. Here, a disordered zinc silicate (ZSO) artificial solid electrolyte interphase with high Zn 2+ conductivity (9.29 mS·cm −1 ) is proposed to address these dilemmas. The disordered ZSO interphase possesses sufficient tunnels for fast Zn 2+ transport and highly reversible Zn plating/stripping, which can redistribute the Zn 2+ flux and guide uniform Zn deposition to achieve a dendrite-free Zn metal anode. As a proof of concept in zinc-ion batteries, the Zn@ZSO//NH 4 V 4 O 10 battery delivers a capacity of 336.8 mAh·g −1 at 0.2 A·g −1 , with a capacity retention of 90.1% at 5 A·g −1 over 1,000 cycles. As for the Zn@ZSO//I 2 battery, by inhibiting I 3 − diffusion, 97.98% of capacity is retained after shelving for 60 h. This work provides enlightenment into interface designing and iodide diffusion suppression to accelerate the commercialization of high-performance zinc-based batteries.
