The fate and behavior of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in constructed wetlands: Insights into potential removal and transformation pathway

Jun Xiao,Juan Huang,Ying Wang,Xiuwen Qian

Although constructed wetland (CW) technology is widely used to eliminate emerging organic pollutants, the removal pathway of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in CW system have not been fully understood yet. This study aims to deeply probe into the fate and behavior of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in CW system. Findings indicated that the removal efficiency of PFOA by CW system was 49.69–73.63 % with initial concentrations at 100–1000 μg/L. Substrate was the main “sink” of PFOA into the CWs (46.22–50.83 %), and the plant uptake (1.99–2.48 %) accounted for a small proportion. Transformation products in the effluent of CW systems included a series of short-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs), hydrogen-containing perfluoroalkanes and other organic fluorides. Activated pathways of xenobiotics biodegradation suggested that enzyme-mediated biochemical reactions might be responsible for the PFOA transformation. The transformation pathway included enzymatic decarboxylation , hydroxylation, hydrolysis, dehydrogenation and dehalogenation, as well as non-enzymatic reactions. These discoveries provide new insights into the in-depth understanding environmental behavior of PFOA in ecosystem and lay the foundation for further ecological remediation.

Effects of Different Carbon and Nitrogen Ratios on Nitrogen Removal Efficiency and Microbial Communities in Constructed Wetlands

Xueyuan Bai,Jianwei Li,Sheng Chang

Amidst rapid urbanization, municipal wastewater treatment plants remain a significant source of nitrogen compounds, which stems from their effluents. Constructed wetlands, employing denitrification processes, have been proven effective at nitrogen removal. Variations in influent nutrient concentrations are often seen as limiting factors affecting nitrogen removal and influencing microbial communities. This study evaluates the impact of nutrient limitation on nitrogen removal by analyzing changes in microbial communities within constructed wetlands under different influent water C/N ratios. The findings indicate that both excessively high and low C/N ratios constrain nitrogen decomposition, with optimal nitrogen removal observed at C/N ratios of 6 or 7. Moderate C/N values (6–7) support diverse and stable microbial networks, ensuring treatment system stability. Microorganisms play a pivotal role in nitrogen transformation, with thenirkgene being crucial for NH4+−N conversion, while theAOAgene dominates NO2−−N and TN conversion. This study offers practical guidance for identifying a suitable C/N ratio for wastewater treatment and establishes a theoretical foundation for regulating nitrogen removal by microbial communities in constructed wetlands within nitrogen removal systems.

Intensive removal of PAHs in constructed wetland filled with copper biochar

Xiaotong Shen,Jian Zhang,Huijun Xie,Zhen Hu,Shuang Liang,Huu Hao Ngo,Wenshan Guo,Xinhan Chen,Jinlin Fan,Congcong Zhao

In this study, biochar-loading copper ions (Cu-BC), a novel composite for removing phenanthrene very efficiently from water, was prepared using the impregnation method. The performance of constructed wetlands (CWs) with these modified and original biochar as substrates was analyzed. CW with Cu-BC removed a large amount of phenanthrene (94.09 ± 3.02%). According to the surface characteristics analysis, Cu-BC can promote the removal of pollutants via complex absorption, hydrophobic adsorption, increasing the Lewis Pair and electrostatic attraction. Furthermore the higher nitrate removal rate in the treated system (91.11 ± 1.17%) was observed to have higher levels of bacterial metabolic diversity and denitrifier types. The phenanthrene accumulated in plants with this treatment system was enhanced by the role of copper in photosynthesis. It is able to boost the plant extraction of organic matter.

Performance assessment of solar photovoltaic-based constructed wetland for sustainable rural wastewater treatment

Ye Yang,Chao-Kun Li,Liu Han,Zhi-Peng Yang,Ning-Ning Xiao,Nan Zhang,Ying-Ying Dong,Zhi-Wen Chen,Hui Xi,Wen-Dong Wang

Water pollution poses a significant challenge to the development of rural human settlements in China, necessitating the development of wastewater treatment systems tailored to the local economic conditions and discharge characteristics. This study introduces a novel wastewater treatment process, namely solar photovoltaic power generation-constructed wetland (SPPG-CW) and conducts a comprehensive evaluation of its performance on rural domestic sewage treatment. The findings reveal that the solar photovoltaic power generation unit ensures stable off-grid operation, providing a reliable power supply to the wetland unit. Simulation results demonstrate that the LAB achieves stable energy output and absorption during SPPG unit operation, thus avoiding energy loss. Long-term monitoring experiments confirm that the SPPG-CW efficiently treats real wastewater. Upon stabilization, the system consistently achieves over 90 % removal efficiency for turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), linear alkyl-benzene sulfonates (LAS), and petroleum. The influent concentrations of COD and petroleum were identified as critical water quality indicators. Post-treatment, the SPPG-CW reduces COD and petroleum concentrations to as low as 5.49 mg/L and 0.02 mg/L, respectively, meeting the irrigation water quality standards. The average removal rates for total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were 88.38 % and 79.41 %, respectively. Further investigation into the purification pathways reveals that microbial activity primarily drives the degradation of LAS and TN, while TP removal is largely attributed to plant uptake. Remarkably, the SPPG-CW, incurring only 20.37 % of the total cost of existing rural wastewater treatment facilities, demonstrates promise for applications in areas endowed with abundant solar energy resources.

Fulvic acid impact on constructed wetland–microbial electrolysis cell system performance: Metagenomic insights

Ming Xu,Hao-qiang Chen,Peng Gao,Xiao-xiao Shen

This study explores the roles of fulvic acid (FA) in both a conventionally constructed wetland (CCW) and a newly constructed wetland – microbial electrolysis cell (ECW). The results showed that FA increased the average removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and ammonia nitrogen in ECW by 8.6, 46.2, 33.0, and 27.9 %, respectively, compared to CCW, and reduced the global warming potential by > 60 %. FA promoted the proliferation of electroactive bacteria (e.g., Chlorobaculum and Candidatus Tenderia ) and FA-degrading bacteria (e.g., Anaerolineaceae and Gammaproteobacteria) and reduced methanogens (e.g., Methanothrix ) via type-changing. The study’s findings suggest that FA influences pollutant removal and microbiome dynamics by altering dissolved oxygen levels and redox potential. In summary, FA and ECW enhanced the efficiency of constructed wetlands by facilitating electron transfer and consumption, and supporting microbial growth and metabolism.

CW-MFC for Efficient Degradation of Ofloxacin-Containing Wastewater and Dynamic Analysis of Microbial Communities

Li Yanhong,Zhao Zikang,Zhao Yao,Tang Shen,Zhang Lihao,Zhang Jie,Peng Yuqing

The overuse of antibiotics poses critical threats to environmental and human health. This study developed a constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) system integrated with pre-acclimated Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 to enhance ofloxacin (OFL) removal from wastewater. The CW-MFC demonstrated exceptional removal efficiency (>96%) for OFL across tested concentration gradients, significantly outperforming conventional constructed wetlands (CW) in both antibiotic elimination and conventional pollutant reduction. Microbial community analysis revealed that S. oneidensis MR-1 inoculation enhanced microbial diversity under OFL stress while promoting enrichment of electroactive Firmicutes phylum members compared to non-inoculated systems. The synergistic integration of bioelectrochemical processes and microbial consortia modification in CW-MFCs effectively addressed antibiotic contamination challenges. These findings establish CW-MFC technology combined with electroactive bacteria acclimation as a sustainable solution for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment, providing critical insights for optimizing antibiotic removal strategies in engineered ecosystems.

Dy(III)-induced aggregation emission quenching effect of single-layered graphene quantum dots for selective detection of phosphate in the artificial wetlands

Shui Qin Chai,Jia Hui He,Lei Zhan,Yuan Fang Li,Chun Mei Li,Cheng Zhi Huang

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), prepared by one-step hydrothermal treatment of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) and triethylamine (TEA), could be exfoliated or delaminated into single-layered graphene quantum dots (s-GQDs) with methanol for the first time, with fluorescence (FL) emission at 500 nm when excited at 417 nm. The s-GQDs, with more sufficient carboxyl groups on the surface than CQDs, could be induced to be aggregated by metal ion dysprosium (Dy 3+ ), resulting in aggregation-induced emission quenching effect subsequently. However, the presence of phosphate (PO 4 3- ) destroys the Dy 3+ -induced aggregates of s-GQDs owing to the strong coordination between Dy 3+ and PO 4 3- , inducing the FL emission recovery of the s-GQDs and providing selective detection method of PO 4 3- in the artificial wetlands with the linear range of 0.2–30 μM and determination limit of 0.1 μM (3σ).

Removal of oxytetracycline and sulfamethoxazole in vertical down-up flow constructed wetlands: Efficiency, removal pathways, and occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes

Yajun Tian,Xiaohong Wang,Yifan Liang,Benhang Li,Yongze Liu,Li Feng,Jun Li,Liqiu Zhang

The extensive use of antibiotics leads to their frequent detection in the environment, posing potential threats to public health. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been widely applied in wastewater treatment and can efficiently remove antibiotics. However, the removal of antibiotics in the CWs is still in a “black box”, and the information about the potential risks of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) occurrence in CWs is limited. In the present study, the removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), as well ARGs occurrence in vertical down-up flow constructed wetlands (VDUF-CWs) were assessed. The results indicated that VDUF-CWs exhibited great removal efficiency for OTC (84.3 ± 3.5 %) and SMZ (77.7 ± 3.9 %). Based on conservation of mass, the contributions of different removal pathways (i.e., microbial degradation , plant absorption, photodegradation , and substrate adsorption) to antibiotic removal were calculated. Of which, microbial degradation was found to be the dominant route in removing OTC and SMZ with the contribution of 58.52 ± 2.34 % and 65.13 ± 3.72 % respectively, followed by photodegradation (18.47 ± 3.04 % and 8.22 ± 3.94 %), plant absorption (9.01 ± 1.28 % and 7.75 ± 4.07 %) and substrate adsorption (2.08 ± 0.03 % and 1.73 ± 0.02 %). Notably, tetA , tetC , tetW , sulI , and sulII genes were detected in layer samples, and the relative abundances of the sul and tet genes were boosted with the extension of operation days, indicating that VDUF-CWs allow a risk of ARGs spread and threatening public health. The present study provided a deeper insight into the mechanism of antibiotic removal in CWs, but further explorations are required to develop the effective control strategies for eliminating ARGs from CWs.

The critical role of microplastics in the fate and transformation of sulfamethoxazole and antibiotic resistance genes within vertical subsurface-flow constructed wetlands

Shiwen Zhang,Lele Cui,Yanhui Zhao,Huijun Xie,Maoyong Song,Haiming Wu,Zhen Hu,Shuang Liang,Jian Zhang

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are reservoirs of microplastics (MPs) in the environment. However, knowledge about the impact of MPs on antibiotic removal and the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is limited. We focused on sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as a representative compound to examine the effects of MPs on SMX removal and the proliferation and dissemination of two SMX-related ARGs ( sul1 and sul2 ) in vertical subsurface-flow CW (VFCW) microcosm. The presence of MPs in the substrate was found to enhance the proliferation of microorganisms owing to the large specific surface area of the MPs and the release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on MP surfaces, which resulted in a high SMX removal ranging from 97.80 % to 99.80 %. However, the presence of MPs promoted microbial interactions and the horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs, which led to a significant increase in the abundances of sul1 and sul2 of 68.47 % and 17.20 %, respectively. It is thus imperative to implement rigorous monitoring strategies for MPs to mitigate their potential ecological hazards.

Antibiotics inhibit nitrogen removal and promote greenhouse gas emissions in high-density earthworm-enhanced constructed wetlands

Guangqian Kuang,Huijuan Cao,Xiangyong Zheng,Yishi Lin,Xingmin Jin,Min Zhao,Wenjuan Han

Antibiotics in wastewater present significant ecological risks. However, their effects on nitrogen (N) removal and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in constructed wetlands (CWs) have been largely neglected in previous studies. This study investigated the effects of antibiotics on N removal and GHG emissions in earthworm-enhanced CWs constructed with three earthworm densities (0 g m -2 , 156 g m -2 , and 312 g m -2 ). The results showed that (1) antibiotics significantly increased effluent total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) concentrations by 49.17 % in systems with the high-density earthworm, whereas no significant effects were observed in the other treatments; (2) in systems without earthworms, antibiotics significantly reduced N₂O emissions by 139 %. In systems with low-density earthworms, CH₄ and CO₂ emissions were significantly reduced by 366 % and 70.3 %, respectively. In contrast, in high-density earthworm systems, N₂O emissions significantly increased by 289 %; (3) antibiotics led to a significant reduction in non-CO₂ global warming potential (GWP non-CO₂ , -143 %) in the systems without earthworms and a reduction in total global warming potential (GWP CH₄+N₂O+CO₂ , -57.3 %) in the systems with low-density earthworms. However, both indices significantly increased by 289 % and 51.2 % in systems with high-density earthworms; (4) antibiotics altered the microbial community composition and significantly increased nitrite reductase activity in the systems with low-density earthworms (+24.5 %) but significantly decreased it in systems with high-density earthworms (-33.0 %). In summary, antibiotic contamination markedly influenced both N removal performance and GHG emissions in earthworm-enhanced CWs, with effects varying depending on earthworm density.

The fate and long-term toxic effects of NiO nanoparticles at environmental concentration in constructed wetland: Enzyme activity, microbial property, metabolic pathway and functional genes

Jun Xiao,Juan Huang,Mingyu Wang,Minjie Huang,Ying Wang

Although the potential threats of metallic oxide nanoparticles (MNPs) to constructed wetland (CW) have been broadly reported, limited information is available regarding the long-term impact of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) on CWs at the environmentally relevant concentrations. Here, we comprehensively elucidated the responses in the treatment performance, enzyme activities , microbial properties, metabolic pathways and functional genes of CWs to chronic exposure of NiO NPs (0.1 and 1 mg/L) for 120 days, with a quantitative analysis on the fate and migration of NiO NPs within CWs. Nitrogen removal evidently declined under the long-term exposure to NiO NPs. Besides, NiO NPs induced a deterioration in phosphorus removal, but gradually restored over time. The activities of dehydrogenase (DHA), phosphatase (PST), urease (URE), ammonia oxygenase (AMO) and nitrate reductase (NAR) were inhibited to some extent under NiO NPs stress. Furthermore, NiO NPs exposure reduced bacterial diversity, shifted microbial composition and obviously inhibited the transcription of the ammonia oxidizing and denitrifying functional genes. The results of nickel mass balance indicated that the major removal mechanism of NiO NPs in CWs was through substrate adsorption and plants uptake. Thus, the ecological impacts of prolonged NiO NPs exposure at environmental concentrations should not be neglected.

Enhanced Benzofluoranthrene Removal in Surface Flow Constructed Wetlands with the Addition of Carbon

Qingqing Cao,Yan Li,Yan Kang,Zizhang Guo

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as hazardous pollutants, could be removed by constructed wetlands (CWs). While the traditional substrate of CWs has a weak adsorption capacity for PAHs, in this study, the carbonous fillers—activated carbon (AC) and biochar—were added into the substrate of surface flow CWs to improve the removal performance of benzofluoranthrene (BbFA), a typical PAH. The results showed that the BbFA removal efficiencies in CWs with the addition of AC and biochar were 11.8 and 1.2% higher than those in the Control group, respectively. Simultaneously, the removal efficiencies of NO3––N were 42.8 and 68.4% in these two CWs, while the BbFA content in the substrate and plants with the addition of carbon was lower than that in the Control group. The addition of carbonous filler reduced the absorption of PAHs by plants in CWs and enhanced microbial degradation. The microbial community results showed that the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, especially γ-proteobacteria, was higher with the addition of fillers, which related to PAH degradation.
