Simple SummaryTheHarmonia axyridisis an important natural enemy insect that has received widespread attention in research and the application of biological pest control. Currently, suitable artificial feed for the mass-rearing of theH. axyridishas not been found, which affects the application of this natural enemy in biological control. This study found that the egg production of artificial feed without added egg yolk is similar to that of artificial feed without added egg yolk supplemented with juvenile hormone III. Compared to the control artificial feed, the egg production significantly increased, which is of great significance for further exploring the effects of non-insect source artificial feed on the growth and development of theH. axyridis.Artificial diets applied in the mass-rearing propagation ofH. axyridiscan improve reproductive ability by optimizing the feeding formula. This study used transcriptome data to investigate the effects of various artificial diets on the growth and development ofH. axyridis. Results indicate that spawning increased with the low-fat and JH III-supplemented artificial diet (Diet 3). Furthermore, the highest glycogen content found in Diet 3 was significantly different from the other two groups. Triglyceride content decreased as adult feeding time increased in the three artificial diet groups, with the fastest decrease observed in the low-fat diet (Diet 2). Protein content increased gradually in the high-fat diet (Diet 1) group compared to the other treatment groups. The adults reared on low-fat artificial diets, when compared to those on artificial diets supplemented with juvenile hormones at the transcriptome level, were found to have upregulated genes enriched in ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis, ribosome biogenesis, and the hedgehog signaling pathway. In contrast, the genes upregulated in the latter group were enriched in oxidative phosphorylation, amino acid biosynthesis, and the metabolism of other amino acids. The results suggest that nutritional status significantly affects the growth and development ofH. axyridisand has practical implications for the artificial feeding of natural pest enemies.

In China, Hyphantria cunea (Drury) is an invasive phytophagous pest; it attacks nearly all species of defoliated trees. To develop integrated pest management programs (IPM) for H. cunea, we need to ensure the availability of insects by mass-rearing them on artificial diets under laboratory conditions. This study compared the growth characteristics, nutritional indices, growth indices, and digestive enzyme activity of insects reared on Pterocarya stenoptera C.DC (Fagales: Juglandaceae), the Chinese wingnut, and an artificial diet. We also investigated the correlation between diet components and growth indices using principal components analysis and Pearson correlation analysis. We found that mass-rearing of H. cunea on an artificial diet was feasible. It led to a shorter developmental period, with heavier larvae and pupae than natural diets. The principal components analysis indicated that the growth indices and α-Amylase were significantly positively associated with PC1, which explained 82.45% of the total data variability. Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant correlation between digestion, absorption parameters, and growth. Developing a mass-rearing program to produce H. cunea on an artificial diet will be valuable for improving IPM strategies. Understanding the mechanism of the responses of phytophagous insect populations to anthropogenic diet regulation can provide new ideas and methods for pest control.

The mandarin fish ( Siniperca chuatsi ) is a significant freshwater carnivorous species in Chinese aquaculture industry, and its farming scale is continuously expanding. The use of feed in aquaculture has become an increasingly common practice. However, the impacts of substituting artificial feed for live bait on fish's biochemical and immune responses are poorly understood. In this study, two hundred forty mandarin fish (weight: 5.60 ± 0.41 g) were divided into two groups and fed live bait or artificial feed (LB and AF groups) over a 63-day aquaculture experiment. We compared the differences between the two groups in terms of histology, biochemical indicators, gene expression, and bacterial resistance. The results showed that artificial feed promoted enhanced growth, evidenced by higher weight ( p < 0.05). The AF group exhibited higher liver and intestinal somatic indices ( p < 0.05), and histological examination revealed denser cytoplasmic content in liver cells, less fragmentation of renal tubular epithelial cells, and less detachment of intestinal epithelial cells in the AF group. Regarding biochemical indicators and gene expression, the AF group showed better performance in glucose regulation and lipid metabolism. The AF group maintained glucose balance ( p < 0.05) and effectively regulated cholesterol transport ( p < 0.05), promoting lipolysis ( p < 0.05) while inhibiting lipogenesis ( p < 0.05). In contrast, live bait consumption resulted in reduced lipolysis ( p < 0.05), increased lipogenesis ( p < 0.05), impaired endoplasmic reticulum function ( p < 0.05), heightened inflammation ( p < 0.05), and diminished antioxidant capacity ( p < 0.05). Additionally, the LB group exhibited lower survival rates and lysozyme levels during bacterial challenges. Overall, artificial feed was more beneficial for the growth, regulate physiology and enhance disease resistance of S. chuatsi , highlighting its potential to improve fish health and increase aquaculture yield.

Artificial diet-rearing silkworms are strongly developed due to climate constraints and market demand. However, research on the industrialized artificial diet-rearing silkworms at all industrialized silkworm rearing) remains relatively limited. This study comprehensively investigated the dissolution properties of sericin derived from industrialized silkworm rearing cocoons. The physicochemical features were systematically characterized through amino acid analyses, molecular weight distribution tests, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Under identical degumming conditions, the sericin from industrialized silkworm rearing cocoons exhibited superior dissolution properties, particularly faster dissolution speed and less remaining sericin content than that from mulberry leaf-rearing silkworm cocoons. In comparison, no significant differences were observed in amino acid composition, secondary structure, and thermal stability between sericin samples from these two cocoons. Importantly, for industrialized silkworm rearing cocoons, degumming treatment and sericin extraction will consume less energy, aligning with the principles of low-carbon production and environmental protection. Additionally, this work highlights the broad development potential and application prospects of industrialized silkworm rearing and the resulting sericin. Graphical abstract
