Lithium metal anodes (LMAs) are being researched to enhance their potential as ideal candidates for high-energy-density rechargeable batteries. However, an unstable solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer and dendrite formation severely hinder their practical operations due to poor coulombic efficiency (CE) and potential security risks. Herein, an artificial SEI layer with various inorganic species was constructed via a strategy involving pre-planting various salt anions on the LMA. The as-prepared layer with multifunctional properties could stabilize liquid–electrode interfaces and proactively regulate even distribution and facilitate the homogeneous diffusion of the ion flux. Moreover, the anion-release behavior of this layer would be an additional attribute that could compensate for the anion consumption during cycling. As a result, the performance of modified LMAs could be significantly improved via this artificial SEI. Li–Cu cells provided CEs of above 98% among a range of current densities with long lifespans, and the symmetric cells showed stable cycling for over 1800 h at 1 mA cm−2. In practice, an assembled LiFePO4/Li cell displayed excellent cyclability of over 1000 cycles with high CEs at 2C. This strategy via., anions-planting protection mechanisms sheds light on tuning robust artificial SEI layers and can offer a fresh perspective to guide the design of high-performance LMAs.

Poor stability caused by side reactions such as corrosion, Zn dendrite and hydrogen evolution are crucial factors hindering commercial application in queous zinc ion energy storage systems. This article offers a strategy, zinc-rich artificial solid electrolyte interphase (ASEI) layer with polar groups by imidazole-2-carboxaldehyde (2-ICA) electrolyte additive, which helps form stable electrode/electrolyte interface and rapid Zn 2+ transfer interface with low resistance. Firstly, the chelation with Zn 2+ of 2-ICA and its zincophilic capability enable the rapid formation of the ASEI layer and result in more sites for initial nucleation, which then guides the uniform Zn 2+ deposition. Additionally, the introduced ASEI with polar groups accelerates the de-solvation kinetics of Zn 2+ and the Zn 2+ transfer ability in electrode/electrolyte interface, which enable high-rate charge and discharge. Therefore, the symmetric battery based on 2-ICA electrolyte exhibits excellent cycling stability at 20 mA cm −2 (cycling up to 800 h). At the same time, assembled Zn//Cu also has a high average Coulombic efficiency (99.2 %). The zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZICs) assembled based on this electrolyte also exhibit outstanding electrochemical properties. This work offers a simple and novel way to realize high performance and great safety zinc-based energy storage devices.

Considered the promising anode material for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries, SiO x has been slow to commercialize due to its low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer, which leads to reduced full-cell energy density, short cycling lives, and poor rate performance. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to in situ construct an artificial hybrid SEI layer consisting of LiF and Li 3 Sb on a prelithiated SiO x anode via spontaneous chemical reaction with SbF 3 . In addition to the increasing ICE (94.5%), the preformed artificial SEI layer with long-term cycle stability and enhanced Li + transport capability enables a remarkable improvement in capacity retention and rate capability for modified SiO x . Furthermore, the full cell using Li(Ni 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 )O 2 and a pre-treated anode exhibits high ICE (86.0%) and capacity retention (86.6%) after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. This study provides a fresh insight into how to obtain stable interface on a prelithiated SiO x anode for high energy and long lifespan lithium-ion batteries.

Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) is a promising anode material for electric vehicles (EVs) and electrochemical energy storage applications because of its safety, good rate capability, and long cycle life. At elevated temperature, such as 60 °C, it always shows poor cycle performance because of the instability between the electrode material and electrolyte, which may also lead to a serious gassing issue. In this article, a facile hydrothermal method is adopted to coat the LTO powder with a thin LiF layer, in which the LiF acts as an artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer to prevent the direct contact of LTO and electrolyte, thus improving the high-temperature cycle performance. Electrochemical tests prove that the LiF coating layer has no influence on the kinetics at ambient temperature and greatly enhances the high-temperature cycle stability, and the LTO@LiF composite material keeps 87% of its initial discharge capacity in 300 1C cycles at 60 °C. Moreover, the LiF coating layer exhibits a special self-driven reforming process during the initial cycles, which makes it uniform and more effective at enhancing the stability between electrode/electrolyte interfaces.

To achieve high ionic conductivity for solid electrolyte, an artificial Li-rich interface layer of about 60 nm thick has been constructed in polymer-based poly(ethylene oxide)-lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide composite solid electrolyte (briefly noted as PEO m ) by adding Li-based alloys. As revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, an artificial interface layer of amorphous feature is created around the Li-based alloy particles with the gradient distribution of Li across it. Electrochemical analysis and theoretical modeling demonstrate that the interface layer provides fast ion transport path and plays a key role in achieving high and stable ionic conductivity for PEO m -Li 21 Si 5 composite solid electrolyte. The PEO m -5%Li 21 Si 5 composite electrolyte exhibits an ionic conductivity of 3.9 × 10 –5 S cm −1 at 30 ° C and 5.6 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 45 ° C. The LiFePO 4 | PEO m -5%Li 21 Si 5 | Li all-solid-state batteries could maintain a stable capacity of 129.2 mA h g −1 at 0.2 C and 30 ° C after 100 cycles, and 111.3 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.5 C and 45 ° C, demonstrating excellent cycling stability and high-rate capability.

Achieving uniform Li deposition is vital for the construction of a safe but also efficient Li-metal anode for Li-metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, a facile coating strategy is used for forming an ultra-thin aramid nanofiber (ANF) membrane, with a network structure, on a Li anode (ANF-Li) as an artificial layer inhibiting Li dendrite's growth. The results show that under an ultra-high current density of 50 mA cm −2 , the ANF-Li|ANF-Li symmetric cells can be kept stably cycled for a period exceeding 300 h. The ANF-Li|LiFePO 4 full cells exhibit a high-capacity retention of 80.1% after 1200 cycles at 1 C, showing a promising potential for LMBs application. Combined experimental results with theoretical calculations, the excellent performance of the ANF-Li anode is explored. Lithiophilic polar functional groups (CO, N H) appear in the surface and structure of ANF membrane, which offer high-concentration functional sites for the Li ions to realize an effective adhesion at the molecular level. This work also finds fiber-shaped lithium deposition for the first time. Furthermore, the nanoscale porosity of the ANF membrane not only provides fast pathways and channels for the diffusion of the electrolyte and Li transportation, but also eliminates the “weak links” of micron-scale Li dendrites penetrating the membrane.

Constructing a stable and robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) has a decisive influence on the charge/discharge kinetics of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), especially for silicon-based anodes which generate repeated destruction and regeneration of unstable SEI films. Herein, a facile way is proposed to fabricate an artificial SEI layer composed of lithiophilic chitosan on the surface of two-dimensional siloxene, which has aroused wide attention as an advanced anode for LIBs due to its special characteristics. The optimized chitosan-modified siloxene anode exhibits an excellent reversible cyclic stability of about 672.6 mAh g −1 at a current density of 1000 mA g −1 after 200 cycles and 139.9 mAh g −1 at 6000 mA g −1 for 1200 cycles. Further investigation shows that a stable and LiF-rich SEI film is formed and can effectively adhere to the surface during cycling, redistribute lithium-ion flux, and enable a relatively homogenous lithium-ion diffusion. This work provides constructive guidance for interface engineering strategy of nano-structured silicon anodes.

The lithium metal anode, which is considered as the “Holy Grail” anode material, possesses extra high energy density and extra low negative electrochemical potential. However, it is hardly applied in lithium batteries owing to lithium dendrite formation and interfacial instability in the electrolyte, resulting in safety problems and poor long-cycle performance. In this work, we designed and synthesized a novel artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer, which exhibits high ionic conductivity and single-ion conductive characteristics. The SEI layer named LiSFSI-PET4A-PETMP (LFPP) SEI layer was synthesized by a one-step click reaction in situ on the surface of lithium metals using lithium[(4-styrenesulfonyl) (fluorosulfonyl)imide] (LiSFSI), pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PET), and pentaerythritol tetrakis (2-mercaptoacetate) (PETMP). The formed LFPP-SEI layer has a controllable 3D cross-linked network structure. It also exhibits high ionic conductivity and high lithium ion transference number near to unity, which is beneficial for preventing the nucleation of lithium dendrites, so as to suppress the formation of lithium dendrites from the source. The Li//LFP full cell using LFPP 2%-Li anode exhibits a quite high and stable capacity with a capacity retention of 75.8% and a high coulombic efficiency of 99.0% at 1C after 390 cycles. Moreover, the full battery using an LFPP 2%-Li anode and an LFPP 1%-Li anode at 0.5C for 250 cycles shows a very good coulombic efficiency of 100.0% and capacity retention values of 77.5% and 77.7%, respectively.

Lithium metal anodes (LMAs) are critical for high-energy-density batteries such as Li–S and Li–O2 batteries. The spontaneously formed solid electrolyte interface on LMAs is fragile, which may not accommodate the cyclic Li plating/stripping. This usually will result in a low coulombic efficiency (CE), short cycle life, and potential safety hazards induced by the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites. In this study, we fabricate a Li alginate-based artificial SEI (ASEI) layer that is chemically stable and allows easy Li ion transport on the surface of LMAs, thus enabling the stable operation of lithium metal anodes. Compared to bare LMAs, the ASEI layer-protected LMAs exhibit a more stable Li plating/stripping behavior and present effective dendrite suppression. The symmetric Li∥Li cells with the ASEI layer-protected LMAs can stably run for 850 and 350 h at current densities of 0.5 and 1 mA cm–2, respectively. Additionally, the LiFePO4∥Li full cell with the ASEI layer-protected LMA exhibits a capacity retention of about 94.0% coupled with a CE of 99.6% after 1000 cycles at 4 C. We believe that this study of engineering an ASEI brings a new and promising approach to the stabilization of LMAs for high-performance lithium metal batteries.
