Yan Bai,Yuyuan Lu,Shuaihang Bi,Weikang Wang,Feifei Lin,Fu Zhu,Pin Yang,Ning Ding,Shujuan Liu,Weiwei Zhao,Ning Liu,Qiang Zhao

Wearable human-machine interaction (HMI) is an advanced technology that realizes operations, collaborations, and interactions between human and machines in a co-located or coordinated way. As the core component of wearable HMI electronics, the flexible sensor is desirable to be intelligent, accurate, collaborative, and multifunctional for the feedback control. Here, the multifunctional MXene/polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel is prepared by radical polymerization. As a flexible strain sensor, it exhibits high sensitivity (gauge factor ≈4.94), wide detection range (0–1081%) and stable signal output for 500 cycles. It can also monitor human movement and operate manipulator in real time, exhibiting great potential in wearable artificial intelligence and HMI. Furthermore, the MXene/PAA hydrogel shows photothermal conversion performance with controllable surface temperature regulation ability (RT ≈67 °C) under near-infrared radiation. This work sheds a new light to develop the collaborative and multifunction wearable HMI electronics through integrating the flexible sensor with personal thermal management system.

Fiber-reinforced tough and ultrathin composite hydrogel interfaces for advanced human-machine interaction

Haoran Niu,Zhanhong Lin,Peixi Yu,Hongsui Luo,Chunrui Peng,Wenping Ning,Bo Li,Yimin Wei,Qiuquan Guo,Jun Yang,Dongxing Zhang,Peipei Jia

Hydrogels have emerged as transformative materials in human–machine interfaces due to its similarity to natural biological tissues. However, existing hydrogels generally suffer from inherent drawbacks such as low mechanical strength, insufficient conformability, and poor environmental tolerance, which severely limit long-term, reliable, and seamless interactions between humans and machines. In this study, a synergistic strategy of fiber reinforcement and solvent displacement is employed to develop an ultrathin, tough, anti-freezing, and anti-dehydration composite hydrogel interface. Benefiting from the efficient energy dissipation and stress transfer mechanisms of the styrene ethylene butylene styrene/polyurethane (SEBS/PU) composite fibers, the resulting 20 μm ultrathin hydrogel exhibits exceptional mechanical properties, with a fracture elongation of 676.7 %, toughness of 2.78 MJ m −3 , and Young’s modulus of 544.7 kPa, enabling conformal interfacing with multiple human skin regions. Furthermore, the glycerol/water binary solvent system, through hydrogen bonding with water molecules, imparts the hydrogel with excellent anti-freezing and anti-dehydration properties. Notably, epidermal electrodes designed from this hydrogel achieve seamless integration with human skin, enabling long-term, high-fidelity (31.41 dB) electrophysiological signal monitoring, demonstrating significant potential for applications in wearable health monitoring, medical diagnostics, and augmented reality systems.

Flexible and adhesive liquid-free ionic conductive elastomers toward human–machine interaction

Zhenyu Xu,Rui Li,Huijing Li,Guorong Gao,Tao Chen

Based on the demand for flexible human–machine interaction devices, it is urgent to develop high-performance stretchable ionic conductive materials. However, most gel-based ionic conductive materials are composed of crosslinked polymer networks that contain liquids, and suffer from limitations of solvent volatilization and leakage, and the cross-linking restricts the movement and diffusion of polymer chains, making it difficult for them to achieve adhesion. Here, we introduce flexible and adhesive liquid-free ionic conductive elastomers (ICE) with salt using a non-crosslinked polymer strategy. The ICE show a transparency of 89.5%, Tg of −51.2 °C, negligible weight loss at 200 °C, a tensile fracture strain of 289.5%, and an initial modulus of 45.7 kPa, and is adhesive to various solid surfaces with an interfacial toughness of 11.4 to 41.4 J m−2. Moreover, the ICE exhibit stable electrical conductivity under ambient conditions. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) were assembled on an electrical shell surface with the adhesive ICE as an electrostatic induction layer and were displayed for use as human–machine interactive keyboards. This approach opens a route to making adhesive and stable polymer ionic conductors for human–machine interaction.

Recyclable and Healable Electro-Optical Fiber for Sensing and Information Transmission

Weikang Li,Zeren Lu,Yue Zhang,Liming Zhu,Jiwei Zhang,Yufan Zhang,Mengjie Wu,Xinran Zhou,Jiaqing Xiong

Electro-optical fibers with dual-mode sensing ability show broad potential in wearable electronics and intelligent human-machine interaction. However, the complex multi-step preparation procedures and the limited environmental adaptivity in materials (stretchability, healability, recyclability, etc.) hinder its practical applications. Herein, based on a urea-oxime polyurethane, a fiber integrating dual-mode electrical sensing and two-color light-emitting functions is developed using a one-step continuous coaxial wet-spinning process, with luminescent sulfides-doped shell layer and an ionogel conductive core layer. The fiber exhibits excellent mechanical, electrical, and optical healing capabilities with efficiencies of 94%, 92%, and 99%, which can be quickly recycled within 30 minutes. Utilizing the electro-optical bimodular perceptive fiber, multi-scenario applications including insect phototaxis monitoring, luminous wearables, and smart tripwires are demonstrated, revealing the healing superiority in programming complex fiber architectures to adapt to substrates with shape or size diversity. Moreover, a healing-programmed fiber with tailored segments is demonstrated for electro-optical hybrid encrypted information transmission. This work inspires a promising healing-programming strategy of healable electro-optical fibers for wide applications in tactile sensing and information communicating.

Modulation of piezoelectricity and mechanical strength in piezoelectric composites based on N0.5B0.51T-BNT nanocubes towards human-machine interfaces

Hao Yin,Yiming Guan,Yanting Li,Zhipeng Zheng,Yiping Guo

Perceiving mechanical stimuli via piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) is attractive for constructing the self-powered sensing system in the field of human-machine interaction. However, the inferior piezoelectricity of the lead-free piezoelectric materials leads to the relatively low sensitivity of PENG. Herein, a 90 nm lead-free off-stoichiometric 0.95Na 0.5 Bi 0.51 TiO 3 -0.05Ba(Ti 0.5 Ni 0.5 )O 3-δ (N 0.5 B 0.51 T-BNT) single crystal was facilely synthesized by hydrothermal method . Compared to stoichiometric 0.95Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 -0.05Ba(Ti 0.5 Ni 0.5 )O 3–δ , the piezoelectric coefficient presents four folds enhancement, which is associated with the enhanced local structural heterogeneity. By using glass fiber fabric (GFF) as the reinforcing matrix, a mechanically robust PENG based on N 0.5 B 0.51 T-BNT is obtained, which delivers a short-circuit current of ∼1.8 μA, and an open-circuit voltage of ∼33.8 V. Meanwhile, the composite film exhibits excellent mechanical strength which can lift the object over 10,000 folds heavier than its own weight successfully. By virtue of the high sensitivity (1.94 V/N, 95.99 nA/N), we assembled the PENG into a 3 * 3 wireless sensing array for the function of the long-distance smart switch and gesture interaction system, which commendably broadens the application scope of the piezoelectric arrays as intelligent sensors.

Programmable high-sensitivity iontronic pressure sensors support broad human-interactive perception and identification

Huang Yue,Hu Shaoxiong,Li Ying,Wang Rui,Yang Yuchen,Zhu Wei,Deng Yuan

Flexible pressure sensors are essential for human–machine interfaces and wearable devices, requiring accurate detection of diverse motion signals. However, challenges arise from material compressibility and mechanical limitations, hindering the development of sensors with both high sensitivity and wide sensing ranges, as well as the demand-driven designability. Here, iontronic sensors exhibiting distinct characteristics are developed via a skin-inspired gradient strategy with programmable performance of ultrahigh sensitivity (37,347.98 kPa −1 ) to 151.6 kPa or overall high sensitivity (130.93–1400.49 kPa −1 ) up to 956.7 kPa, capable of detecting both subtle arterial pulses and large motions like plantar pressure. Furthermore, the merit of ultrahigh sensitivity enables pressure sensors to record handwriting precisely and distinguish individual features, facilitating effective extraction of connotative information, and has been demonstrated in the proposed human-interactive system assisted with machine learning for individual authentication. The work provides valuable insight into reverse engineering of pressure sensors, promising benefits for broad intelligence applications.

Customizable, self-healing, and biocompatible microLED-hydrogel integration displays

Jianan Niu,Jiangwen Wang,Yuanhong Shi,Zilong Dong,Tianci Huang,Xinhuan Dai,Wei Sha,Yong Long,Weiguo Hu

Visualization is a fundamental interface method for efficient human-computer interaction, encompassing the evolution of visual displays from large screens to mobile devices, and now advancing toward implantable displays. we have developed a hydrogel composite display with high transparency (95 % visible light transmittance), high electrical conductivity, and self-healing properties. We proved a vapor-phase bulk transfer protocol to transfer high-performance, small-sized (94 μm), and high-resolution (254 PPI) GaN micro-LED arrays (100 × 100) onto hydrogel substrates with minimal damage, high precision, and meticulous patterning. The self-healing ability of the hydrogel enables arbitrary cutting and splicing for future human-computer interaction display products, breaking through the limitations of various sizes and conformations. Moreover, the dehydration curing/hydration recovery process accomplishes an impressive secondary molding function for the display. Building upon these advancements, we have developed an ultra-thin (200 μm) implantable biocompatible display that is only 1/10 the thickness of the dermis to enhance human-computer interaction experiences. With the deepening interactions between people, machines, and the meta-universe in the future information society, hydrogel-based self-healing micro-LED displays will meet the diverse needs of various visual perception carriers.

Self-healing electro-optical skin for dual-mode human-machine interaction

Zeren Lu,Weikang Li,Liming Zhu,Yufan Zhang,Zechang Ming,Yue Zhang,Xinran Zhou,Jiaqing Xiong

Scenario-adaptive electronic skins (e-skins) are significant for improving human-machine-environment interaction. Realizing high-performance e-skins with electro-optical cooperative perceptivity (EO-skin) for mechanical stimuli monitoring remains challenging. Herein, utilizing microphase separated styrene-isoprene-styrene and ethyl vinyl acetate (SIS-EVA) as elastomer matrix, we demonstrate a stretchable, adhesive, and self-healable mechanoluminescent tactile EO-skin with triboelectric self-powered perceptivity. The EO-skin possesses a seamlessly integrated tri-layer structure by interface etching and self-binding effect in continuous casting, where the top mechanoluminescent layer (SIS-EVA embedded with ZnS/CaZnOS:Mn 2 + particles) adheres to an electrode layer consisting of SIS-EVA/silver flakes/liquid metal microparticles are encapsulated by an SIS-EVA substrate. This EO-skin can visualize mechanical stimuli (emit orange-yellow light) and generate triboelectric signals (∼65 V), demonstrating an electro-optical dual-mode interactive e-skin for tactile sensing to identify material textures, and touching/writing information. The EO-skin is adaptive to different surfaces (∼2.49 MPa adhesive strength), highly stretchable (tensile strain ∼1040 %) and self-healable (93 % mechanical healing efficiency) with stable electro-optical performances. In addition to traditional electrical tactile identification, dynamic optical capturing-based machine learning was used to build an electro-optical dual-mode human-machine interactive system for high-precision handwritten information identification (∼97.76 %). This self-healable EO-skin with electro-optical dual-mode sensing capability promises to realize multidimensional mechanical-adaptive human-machine interactions in specific scenarios.

Quasi-Homogeneous Integrated Strain Vector Sensors for Natural Human–Machine Interaction

Liangxu Xu,Xiaochen Xun,Fangfang Gao,Liubing Fan,Shuchang Zhao,Ke Ren,Xinqin Liao,Xiaojuan Ban,Nan Wu,Xuan Zhao,Qingliang Liao,Yue Zhang

Body motion capture is a vital approach that underpins natural human–machine interaction. Strain sensors that can detect both motion amplitude and direction are the basis for discerning interactive intent. However, most strain sensors with heterogeneous architecture fail to perceive motion direction accurately. Here, quasi-homogeneous integrated strain vector sensors are constructed by vertically stacking elastomer meshes with different fiber orientations in order. By varying fiber orientation, the proportion of intrinsic elastic and structural deformation in elastomer mesh can be adjusted, achieving effective regulation of its electromechanical properties. A highly anisotropic elastomer mesh with unidirectional fibers is customized, enabling the strain vector sensors to perceive stretch amplitude and direction simultaneously. Notably, the strain vector sensors demonstrate a minimum directional resolution of 2° and a linear working range of up to 100% strain. The tough bonding between quasi-homogeneous interlayers ensures high robustness even after 10 000 loading cycles. Moreover, a wearable 3D motion capture system is built that can acquire comprehensive data regarding motions, including amplitudes, directions, and modes, and visually synchronize them in virtual reality. Natural human–machine interaction is achieved by intuitively and effortlessly altering motion amplitudes and directions. This work provides an alternative insight for immersive human–machine interaction in the future.

Bioinspired Co-Design of Tactile Sensor and Deep Learning Algorithm for Human–Robot Interaction

Depeng Kong,Geng Yang,Gaoyang Pang,Zhiqiu Ye,Honghao Lv,Zhangwei Yu,Fei Wang,Xi Vincent Wang,Kaichen Xu,Huayong Yang

Robots equipped with bionic skins for enhancing the robot perception capability are increasingly deployed in wide applications ranging from healthcare to industry. Artificial intelligence algorithms that can provide bionic skins with efficient signal processing functions further accelerate the development of this trend. Inspired by the somatosensory processing hierarchy of humans, the bioinspired co-design of a tactile sensor and a deep learning-based algorithm is proposed herein, simplifying the sensor structure while providing computation-enhanced tactile sensing performance. The soft piezoresistive sensor, based on the carbon black-coated polyurethane sponge, offers a continuous sensing area. By utilizing a customized deep neural network (DNN), it can detect external tactile stimulus spatially continuously. Besides, a novel data augmentation method is developed based on the sensor's hexagonal structure that has a sixfold rotation symmetry. It can significantly enhance the generalization ability of the DNN model by enriching the collected training data with generated pseudo-data. The functionality of the sensor and the robustness of the proposed data augmentation strategy are verified by precisely recognizing five touch modalities, illustrating a well-generalized performance, and providing a promising application prospect in human–robot interaction.
