Ultrastretchable, self-healable and adhesive composite organohydrogels with a fast response for human–machine interface applications

Zhihui Xie,Zhuo Chen,Xiangshu Hu,Hao-Yang Mi,Jian Zou,Heng Li,Yuejun Liu,Zhi Zhang,Yinghui Shang,Xin Jing

Hydrogel based flexible sensors have been considered as promising wearable devices in human–machine interactions, which are of great significance in mobile communications, personal healthcare, and intelligent robots. To meet the requirements of practical applications especially in harsh environments, a multifunctional strain sensor was designed and fabricated based on the polydopamine–reduced oxide graphene/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/polyacrylamide composite organohydrogel (PCOH) using ethylene glycol (Eg)–H2O binary solvent as the replacement medium, which displayed an excellent anti-freezing property (−40 °C for 24 h) owing to the low freezing point of the Eg in the PCOH, high self-healing efficiency (92% tensile strength and 90% elongation at break), excellent stretchability (1350%), high sensitivity (a gauge factor of 3.19 with the strain ranging from 0 to 500%), fast response time (90 ms), long durability (800 cycles), and a wide temperature detection range (−40 °C to 60 °C), respectively. When used as a strain sensor, it was able to detect various human motions such as finger, wrist, and knee movements, and facial micro-expressions. Moreover, we also attached the flexible sensor to the yoga equipment or a neck brace for practical applications, and it could also detect the movements of the human body. Specifically, as a wearable human–machine interface device, a smart glove that takes advantage of the excellent properties of the PCOH was developed for hand gesture recognition via transmitting data to a smart phone with a real-time display via a bluetooth wireless system. Thus, these multifunctional PCOH based strain sensors have broad application prospects in human–machine interactions, sports training, and personal healthcare.

Cheng-Zhou Hang,Xue-Feng Zhao,Song-Yan Xi,Ying-Hui Shang,Kai-Ping Yuan,Fan Yang,Qi-Gang Wang,Jia-Cheng Wang,David Wei Zhang,Hong-Liang Lu

The highly stretchable, flexible and self-healing strain sensor is considered as a promising wearable device for motion detection in fields such as robotics and human-machine interface. Herein, a strain sensor with high stretchability and sensitivity is designed and fabricated based on the poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) hydrogel. The ionic conductive PAAm hydrogel shows an excellent self-healing property with fast electrical self-healing speed (within 1.8 s) and high self-healing efficiency (99%). The PAAm hydrogel based strain sensor exhibits excellent performance with large stretchability (>900%), high sensitivity (with maximum gauge factor of 6.44), fast response time (~150 ms), and good cycling durability (>3000 cycles). As the wearable device, the strain sensor can detect various human motions and is able to transmit the data to the smart phone combined with a readout and wireless system. Furthermore, a smart glove was fabricated by coupling multiple strain sensors and the corresponding circuit. The smart glove is capable of expressing and recognizing American Sign Language and can be used to control a robotic hand wirelessly through the hand gestures. Thus, the highly stretchable, self-healing hydrogel-based strain sensor shows a potential application for the human-machine interface, personal healthcare and sports training.

Bioinspired Monopolar Controlled Ionic Hydrogels for Flexible Non-Contact Human–Machine Interfaces

Wenlong Wu,Tianyi Jiang,Min Wang,Tong Li,Yuxin Song,Jun Liu,Zuankai Wang,Hongyuan Jiang

Most flexible human–machine interfaces emulate the tactile system of the skin, which has the risk of contact damage. Additionally, contact deformation often leads to a hysteresis response. Non-contact interaction can address these problems. Inspired by the electroreception capabilities of the elephantnose fish, this study introduces a non-contact sensing model employing monopolar controlled ionic hydrogel. Compared to most existing mutual capacitive non-contact sensing models, this model not only boosts responsivity by over 3.5 times but also streamlines the sensing architecture. Utilizing this sensing model, a flexible non-contact human–machine interface is developed by organizing three differently shaped hydrogels into an asymmetric configuration. This device reliably discerns six non-contact gestures using machine learning algorithms and supports at least eleven interactive functions by detecting the duration of gestures, enabling continuous real-time control over external devices. This advancement heralds a more liberated paradigm of human–machine interaction with promising implications for the Internet of Things.

Linear Film Strain Sensors with Nanosphere-on-Fiber Hetero-Modulus Microstructure for Human-Bionic Finger Interfacing

Kai-Dong Wei,He-Qing Shao,Kai Ke,Bo Yin,Ming-Bo Yang,Wei Yang

Stretchable film strain sensors show potential applications in healthcare and human-machine interfacing, while poor signal linearity restricts their practical applications owing to inaccurate and instable strain indication. Signal sensitivity and linearity can be improved via constructing hetero-modulus microstructure on elastomeric substrate to some extent, though it is challenging to construct hetero-structure with distinct modulus differences for electrical signal linearity modulation over a wide strain range. Herein, a simple strategy is proposed to tune signal sensitivity, linearity, and detection range of stretchable strain sensors by adjusting the distribution of rigid polystyrene (PS) nanospheres coated on electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fiber mats. Heterostructure characteristics can be controlled by spray coating times of PS nanospheres, which are immobilized onto the fiber mats by weak swelling of TPU and the linking layer of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) between TPU and PS induced by hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking. Relatively, the sensors with moderate spray coating times of PS nanospheres show balanced signal sensitivity and linearity over a strain range of 0–80%, as well as fast response to tensile strain and good signal reproducibility. Such elastomeric film strain sensors can be used for monitoring physiological activities and interfacing human hand and bionic fingers.

Bio-Inspired Conductive Hydrogels with High Toughness and Ultra-Stability as Wearable Human-Machine Interfaces for all Climates

Zeyu Cui,Chen Liu,Shiqiang Fang,Junbin Xu,Zhi Zhao,Jiaquan Fang,Zehao Shen,Zhenhua Cong,Jian Niu

Drawing inspiration from Salicornia , a plant with the remarkable ability to thrive in harsh environments, a conductive hydrogel with high toughness and ultra-stability is reported. Specifically, the strategy of pre-cross-linking followed by secondary soaking in saturated salt solutions is introduced to prepare the PAAM-alginate conductive hydrogel with dual cross-linked dual network structure. It allows the alginate network to achieve complete cross-linking, fully leveraging the structural advantages of the PAAM-alginate conductive hydrogel. The highest tensile strength of the obtained conductive hydrogel is 697.3 kPa and the fracture energy can reach 69.59 kJ m −2 , significantly higher than human cartilage and natural rubbers. Specially, by introducing saturated salt solutions within the hydrogel, the colligative properties endow the PAAM-alginate conductive hydrogel with excellent water retention and anti-freezing properties. The prepared conductive hydrogels can work stably in an ambient environment for more than 7 days and still maintain good mechanical behavior and ionic conductivity at −50 °C. Benefiting from the excellent comprehensive performance of conductive hydrogels, wearable human-machine interfaces that can withstand large joint movements and are adapted for extreme environments are prepared to achieve precise control of robots and prostheses, respectively.

A flexible contact and non-contact bifunctional intelligent sensing system based on a triboelectric nanogenerator

Xiuyu Li,Peng Wang,Chuanyong Zong,Hongsen Niu,Peiming Xu,Yixiu Yu,Yang Li,Guozhen Shen

Conventional electronic skin (e-skin) that combines non-contact sensing with contact sensing relies on the combination of sensors, greatly hindering its application in human-machine interface (HMI). Herein, a triboelectric nanogenerator based on Ecoflex/PEDOT:PSS (EP-TENG) is proposed to achieve both contact and non-contact sensing. The EP-TENG comprises an Ecoflex/PEDOT:PSS triboelectric layer with a cicada wing-inspired microstructure and MXene electrode with superior conductivity. Benefit from the high specific surface area brought by cicada wing micropillars and the charge retention ability of PEDOT:PSS, The EP-TENG has good non-contact sensing capability within a range of 80   mm and also has excellent performance in contact mode, with an open circuit voltage (V oc ) of 124   V and a power density of 75.3   mW/m². Importantly, our work develops a dual-mode control strategy that combines non-contact gesture recognition and contact-based interactive control. We demonstrate the EP-TENG dual-mode control through a Tetris unlocking system, which makes up for the lack of precise control in the non-contact mode and shows its important application potential in multi-mode human-computer interaction in complex scenarios in the future.

A wearable ionic hydrogel strain sensor with double cross-linked network for human–machine interface

Wu Zijian,Zhang Liying,Wang Meng,Zang Defeng,Long Haiyong,Weng Ling,Guo Ning,Gao Junguo,Liu Yonghong,Xu Ben Bin

Wearable strain sensor prepared with ionic conductive hydrogel holds great promises in a variety of engineering fields. In this work, we introduce sodium casein (SC) into a dual network hydrogel system made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylamide (PAM), to prepare an ionic hydrogel sensor. Compared to the PAM/PVA dual network hydrogel, the introduction of SC plays a significant synergistic role. Such dual network PAM/PVA/SC hydrogels exhibit excellent mechanical properties (a maximum strain of 719%, a maximum stress of 444.3 kPa), low hysteresis, and rapid recovery after uni-axial stretching. Since SC drives a large number of free ions, PAM/PVA/SC hydrogels present good conductivity while maintaining high physical stability, to enable an excellent sensitivity in a comparatively large strain range (Gauge factor, GF = 2.17 under 400% strain). The unique properties allow the generation of stable and accurate electrical signals transduced from different locations of the human body. As such, the PAM/PVA/SC hydrogel has the potential to be used as human–machine interface for continuous, real-time physiological monitoring.

All-in-One Iontronic Sensing Paper

Sen Li,Ning Pan,Zijie Zhu,Ruya Li,Baoqing Li,Jiaru Chu,Guanglin Li,Yu Chang,Tingrui Pan

Paper has been utilized as an ideal platform for chemical, biological, and mechanical sensing for its fibrous structures and properties in addition to its low cost. However, current studies on pressure-sensitive papers have not fully utilized the unique advantages of papers, such as printability, cuttability, and foldability. Moreover, the existing resistive, capacitive, and triboelectric sensing modalities have long-standing challenges in sensitivity, noise-proofing, response time, linearity, etc. Here, a novel flexible iontronic sensing mechanism, referred to as iontronic sensing paper (ISP), is introduced to the classic paper substrates by incorporating both ionic and conductive patterns into an all-in-one flexible sensing platform. The ISP can then be structured into 2D or 3D tactile-sensitive origamis only by the paper-specific manipulations of printing, cutting, folding, and gluing. Notably, the ISP device possesses a device sensitivity of 10 nF kPa −1 cm −2 , which is thousands of times higher than that of the commercial counterpart, a resolution of 6.25 Pa, a single-millisecond response time, and a high linearity ( R 2 > 0.996). Benefiting from the unique properties of the fibrous paper structures and its remarkable performances, the ISP devices hold enormous potential for the emerging human–machine interfaces, including smart packaging, health wearables, and pressure-sensitive paper matrix.

Air-Writing Recognition Enabled by a Flexible Dual-Network Hydrogel-Based Sensor and Machine Learning

Derrick Boateng,Xukai Li,Weiyao Wu,Anqi Yang,Anadil Gul,Yan Kang,Lin Yang,Jifang Liu,Hongbo Zeng,Hao Zhang,Linbo Han

Accurate air-writing recognition is pivotal for advancing state-of-the-art text recognizers, encryption tools, and biometric technologies. However, most existing air-writing recognition systems rely on image-based sensors to track hand and finger motion trajectories. Additionally, users’ writing is often guided by delimiters and imaginary axes which restrict natural writing movements. Consequently, recognition accuracy falls short of optimal levels, hindering performance and usability for practical applications. Herein, we have developed an approach utilizing a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) algorithm coupled with an ionic conductive flexible strain sensor based on a sodium chloride/sodium alginate/polyacrylamide (NaCl/SA/PAM) dual-network hydrogel for intelligent and accurate air-writing recognition. Taking advantage of the excellent characteristics of the hydrogel sensor, such as high stretchability, good tensile strength, high conductivity, strong adhesion, and high strain sensitivity, alongside the enhanced analytical ability of the 1D-CNN machine learning (ML) algorithm, we achieved a recognition accuracy of ∼96.3% for in-air handwritten characters of the English alphabets. Furthermore, comparative analysis against state-of-the-art methods, such as the widely used residual neural network (ResNet) algorithm, demonstrates the competitive performance of our integrated air-writing recognition system. The developed air-writing recognition system shows significant potential in advancing innovative systems for air-writing recognition and paving the way for exciting developments in human-machine interface (HMI) applications.

Biodegradable, conductive, moisture-proof, and dielectric enhanced cellulose-based triboelectric nanogenerator for self-powered human-machine interface sensing

Zixun Wang,Chen Chen,Lin Fang,Bao Cao,Xinbo Tu,Renyun Zhang,Kai Dong,Ying-Chih Lai,Peihong Wang

With the rapid development of sensors and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), multifunctional self-powered sensors have received extensive attention. In this study, we prepare cellulose carbon nanotubes aerogel TENG (CCA-TENG) with high output, moisture-proof, simplified structure, and biodegradability for ambient energy harvesting and self-powered sensing. The cellulose carbon nanotubes aerogel (CCA) can be used not only acts as a tribolayer, but also as an electrode, with the characteristics of a 3D porous structure , high specific surface area, and dielectric enhancement. CCA-TENG exhibits improved output performance due to the advantages of the enhanced dielectric constant and 3D porous structure. Since regenerated cellulose is a dense polymer, it still keeps high output performance under high humidity. More importantly, CCA-TENG can be rapidly degraded in cellulase, and the output performance of the CCA-TENG prepared from recycled CNTs reaches 91.04% output of the original TENG. This study demonstrates the preparation, degradation, and reuse of CCA-TENGs and their applications, providing new avenues for high-performance, moisture-proof, and ambient self-powered systems.

Intelligent perceptual textiles based on ionic-conductive and strong silk fibers

Lu Haojie,Zhang Yong,Zhu Mengjia,Li Shuo,Liang Huarun,Bi Peng,Wang Shuai,Wang Haomin,Gan Linli,Wu Xun-En,Zhang Yingying

Endowing textiles with perceptual function, similar to human skin, is crucial for the development of next-generation smart wearables. To date, the creation of perceptual textiles capable of sensing potential dangers and accurately pinpointing finger touch remains elusive. In this study, we present the design and fabrication of intelligent perceptual textiles capable of electrically responding to external dangers and precisely detecting human touch, based on conductive silk fibroin-based ionic hydrogel (SIH) fibers. These fibers possess excellent fracture strength (55 MPa), extensibility (530%), stable and good conductivity (0.45 S·m –1 ) due to oriented structures and ionic incorporation. We fabricated SIH fiber-based protective textiles that can respond to fire, water, and sharp objects, protecting robots from potential injuries. Additionally, we designed perceptual textiles that can specifically pinpoint finger touch, serving as convenient human-machine interfaces. Our work sheds new light on the design of next-generation smart wearables and the reshaping of human-machine interfaces.

A highly sensitive and stretchable flexible strain sensor based on a PVC/PVA dual-substrate composite for wearable electronics

Shujia Chen,Tianyun Dong,Yuwei Lan

Flexible strain sensors have garnered significant attention for applications in wearable electronics and human–machine interfaces. However, many previously reported sensors suffer from limited deformability, complex fabrication, and unstable signal output under dynamic conditions, largely due to the low polarity, poor flexibility, and weak interfacial compatibility of commonly used polymer substrates. In this work, we report a PVC/PVA/MCNTs composite, in which the incorporation of PVA significantly improves the matrix polarity and interfacial interaction, thereby enhancing flexibility and processability. Fabricated via a simple solvent-casting method, the sensor exhibits high stretchability (>300 %), low hysteresis (2.04 %), fast response (240 ms), and stable performance over 1000 dynamic cycles. The sensor enables accurate, real-time monitoring of human joint movements and tracks varying bending angles of robotic fingers, confirming its practical value in biomechanical sensing and soft robotics control. These results demonstrate that the developed composite substrate exhibits excellent mechanical and sensing performance. The introduction of dual substrate components enhances matrix polarity, thereby broadening the range of compatible functional fillers and establishing a promising platform for future flexible electronic applications.
