Silica nanorods were synthesized through a simple one-pot emulsion-droplet-based growth method, in which tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) was used as the silica source, ammonia as the catalyst, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the structure-directing agent and stabilizer. By controlling hydrolysis and condensation in the reaction process, we regulated the aspect ratios and the infrared (IR) absorption fingerprint signals (the transverse optical and the longitudinal optical phonon modes) of the silica nanorods. Based on this, a dual-mode immunoassay was performed for detecting model target analyte, human IgG. The shape code of the silica nanorods was used for simple, rapid qualitative, and sensitive semi-quantitative immunoassay by using a conventional optical microscope. The characteristic IR absorption fingerprint signals of the silica nanorods allowed for reliable quantitative immunoassay with good selectivity and high specificity. The detection limit and the linear range were found out to be 0.5 pM and 1 pM–10 nM, respectively. We expect that such dual-mode immunoassay could be applied for the detection of other analytes, such as protein, nucleic acids, bacteria, viruses, explosives, toxins, and so on.
A simple dual-mode immunoassay was performed using the shape code and infrared absorption fingerprint signals of silica nanorods as detection signals.

A fiber-reinforced SPR sensor based on silver-nucleated gold-shell bimetallic nanoparticles and graphene oxide was developed and applied to human IgG detection. The refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the Ag@Au/GO fiber SPR sensor is as high as 4715.9 nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.333–1.365. Staphylococcus aureus protein A (SPA) can specifically recognize and bind to the fragment crystallizable (Fc) of the antibody; it facilitates the highly targeted immobilization of the antibody. SPA and rabbit anti-human IgG were immobilized on the surface of the Ag@Au/GO fiber SPR sensor for the detection of different concentrations of human IgG with a sensitivity of 0.53 nm/μg/mL and detection limits of 0.037 μg/mL. This biosensor based on the mixed structure of GO and Ag@Au combined the common advantages of the two materials. Therefore, our study provides a simple platform for biological analysis and has a good application prospect.

A graphene oxide/silver coated polymer cladding silica fiber optical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) human IgG detection biosensor with a high sensitivity and a low limit of detection is presented. Due to the graphene oxide (GO), the intensity of the confined electric field surrounding the sensing layer can be enhanced, the sensitivity of refractive index (RI) of the graphene oxide/silver SPR sensor reached 3311 nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.3334–1.3731 compared with 2875 nm/RIU in the range of 1.3328–1.3739 of the silver film SPR sensor. Afterwards, SPR optical fiber biosensor was developed based on graphene oxide/silver coated optical fiber when staphylococcal protein A and goat anti-human IgG were immobilized on the surface of the graphene oxide film. The sensor can be used to detect different concentrations of human IgG, a high sensitivity of 0.4985 nm/(μg/mL) and a low limit of detection 0.04 μg/mL were observed. Therefore, the graphene oxide/silver film SPR human IgG detection biosensor with high sensitivity and low limit of detection shows a great promise for the future biochemical and biomedical application.

Whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators have been used as optical sensors in fundamental research and practical applications. The majority of WGM sensors are passive resonators that require complex systems, thereby limiting their practicality. Active resonators enable the remote excitation and collection of WGM-modulated fluorescence spectra, without requiring complex systems, and can be used as alternatives to passive microresonators. This paper demonstrates an active microresonator, which is a microdisk laser in a hyperboloid-drum (HD) shape. The HD microdisk lasers are a combination of a rhodamine B-doped photoresist and a silica microdisk. These HD microdisk lasers can be utilized for the detection of label-free biomolecules. The biomolecule concentration can be as low as 1 ag mL −1 , whereas the theoretical detection limit of the biosensor for human IgG in phosphate buffer saline is 9 ag mL −1 (0.06 a M ). Additionally, the biosensors are able to detect biomolecules in an artificial serum, with a theoretical detection limit of 9 ag mL −1 (0.06 a M ). These results are approximately four orders of magnitude more sensitive than those for the typical active WGM biosensors. The proposed HD microdisk laser biosensors show enormous detection potential for biomarkers in protein secretions or body fluids.

A sensitivity enhanced surface plasmon resonance (SPR) immunosensor based on Graphene oxide (GO) composite and staphylococcal protein A (SPA) co-modified photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is developed for human IgG detection. The PCF spliced between two section of multimode fibers (MMFs) is sputtered with gold film, which was then modified with graphene oxide and SPA for further immunosensing. Graphene oxide with abundant functional groups has a large surface area for more biomolecules immobilization and can enhance the interaction between Au film and external medium, leading to the sensitivity increased greatly. SPA can specifically bind the Fc region of the antibodies and has a high degree of orientation for capturing antibodies. Experimental results indicated that the refractive index (RI) sensitivity of graphene oxide modified Au-PCF SPR sensor reaches 4649.8 nm/RIU, which is about 1888 nm/RIU higher than that without graphene oxide film and the human IgG detection limit reaches as low as 10 ng/mL. Such a sensitivity enhanced immunosensor based on graphene oxide and SPA co-modified PCF shows a great promise in biosensing.
