Revealing key meso-particles responsible for irreversible membrane fouling in an integrated oxidation-coagulation ultrafiltration system: Fouling behavior and interfacial interaction mechanism

Guang Yang,Juan Li,Zhiyang Cheng,Qingwen Qin,Hongwei Zhang,Na Lu,Jie Wang

This study applied a ferrate in-situ oxidation-coagulation ultrafiltration integrated system in drinking water treatment, illustrating the influence of meso-particles on membrane fouling behavior by oxidation-coagulation regulating. Under neutral conditions, the meso-particles between 20 and 100 nm were the mainly components at initial oxidation phase. Subsequently small molecules gathered to meso-particles of 200–500 nm under the flocculation, and 40 % of micro-particles aggregates were detected finally. According to the statistical correlation between multiscale particles and membrane flux and resistance, wherein meso-particle especially in range of 20–100 nm principally contributed to the irreversible fouling while the correlation coefficients above 0.9, and reversible fouling related to the synergy of meso- and micro-particles. Additionally, the fouling behavior of meso-particles on the membrane surface and the structural evolution of the fouling layer were illustrated based on the interfacial interaction, UV–vis reflectance spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation. The changes in hydrophilicity and charge of the meso-particle (20–100 nm) increased the attractive interaction with the membrane, causing severe membrane fouling. As flocculation progressed, the polynuclear Fe-hydroxide interacted with HA molecular fragments, and aggregated to meso-particles in range of 200–500 nm, which had smaller molecular gap and more tight structure than micro-particle (500–1000 nm), due to the HA molecular fragments were more strongly bound on the polynuclear Fe-hydroxide compared to iron hydroxide cluster. The stable and compact structure induced the meso-particles deposited on membrane surface and hardly be physically cleaned. The investigation of meso-particle on membrane fouling was provided new insight into the membrane separation process.

Largely Enhancing Luminous Efficacy, Color-Conversion Efficiency, and Stability for Quantum-Dot White LEDs Using the Two-Dimensional Hexagonal Pore Structure of SBA-15 Mesoporous Particles

Jiasheng Li,Yong Tang,Zongtao Li,Xinrui Ding,Binhai Yu,Liwei Lin

Quantum-dot (QD) white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are promising for illumination and display applications due to their excellent color quality. Although they have a high quantum yield close to unity, the reabsorption of QD light leads to high conversion loss, significantly reducing the luminous efficacy and stability of QD white LEDs. In this report, SBA-15 mesoporous particles (MPs) with two-dimensional hexagonal pore structures (2D-HPS) are utilized to largely enhance the luminous efficacy and color-conversion efficiency of QD white LEDs in excess of 50%. The reduction in conversion loss also helps QD white LEDs to achieve a lifetime 1.9 times longer than that of LEDs using QD-only composites at harsh aging conditions. Simulation and testing results suggest that the waveguide effect of 2D-HPS helps in reducing the reabsorption loss by constraining the QD light inside the wall of 2D-HPS, decreasing the probability of being captured by QDs inside the hole of 2D-HPS. As such, materials and mechanisms like SBA-15 MPs with 2D-HPS could provide a new path to improve the photon management of QD light, comprehensively enhancing the performances of QD white LEDs.

In vitro physiological evaluation of metal bioaccessibility and reactive oxygen species distribution in biomass incineration lightweight mesoporous particulate matter

Bing Ma,Yulong Li,Kui Wang,Xiaoran Dong,Jianzhong Yang,Lie Yang

Biomass, a traditional fuel derived from agricultural sources, offers renewable advantages over fossil fuels and remains widely used for heating, electricity generation, and cogeneration. Lightweight mesoporous particulate matter (LMP) is a by-product generated during the biomass combustion and incineration process. It was found that both metals and environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in LMP can lead to potential negative health effects. To identify the critical risk sources, in vitro physiological assays were conducted using simulated lung and gastrointestinal fluids to assess the bioaccessibility, distribution of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and oxidative potential of metals bound to LMP. The findings revealed that the bioaccessibility of LMP-bound metals varied depending on the target organ system. Furthermore, LMP-bound metals, rather than EPFRs or ROS inherently produced by LMP, were the primary contributors to the generation of free radicals, particularly superoxide anions. LMP-bound arsenic accounted for the highest health risks, contributing 95.76 % of the total non-carcinogenic risk (0.266) and 99.54 % of the total carcinogenic risk (4.100 × 10⁻⁵). However, at current exposure levels, LMP-bound metals as a whole did not pose significant non-carcinogenic or carcinogenic risks, nor did they induce severe oxidative stress. Our study further clarifies the mechanism of toxicity of pollutants to human health and provides a reliable basis for future protection and regulation.

High temperature Mn2O3/Mn3O4 and Co3O4/CoO systems for thermo-chemical energy storage

Jia Liu,Jan Baeyens,Yimin Deng,Xianlu Wang,Huili Zhang

A major action to reduce CO 2 emissions is replacing fossil fuels by renewable energy sources . Matching the energy supply and demand by the mostly intermittent renewable resources (wind, solar, wave) is hence a hot topic, and energy storage has become crucial. Thermo-chemical energy storage (TCES) has a higher energy density than sensible and latent heat storage , and allows energy to be stored in the reaction products for multiple reuse and even off-site application. Design parameters are the equilibrium temperature , the reaction heat and the reaction rate, as obtained from both thermodynamic and kinetic assessments. Equilibrium temperatures of the selected metal oxides , Mn 2 O 3 /Mn 3 O 4 and Co 3 O 4 /CoO are between 1115 K and 1179 K. The present research studies both redox reactions as examples. Commercial Mn 2 O 3 and Co 3 O 4 were previously investigated in detail, and suffer from incomplete reversibility . The present study investigates the use of self-made Mn 2 O 3 and Co 3 O 4 mesoporous particles, of micrometer or nanometer scale, respectively. The average particle size of self-made Mn 2 O 3 particles is < 5 μm, with a BET surface area of 239.7 m 2 /g, and T eq of 1177 K at ambient pressure . Self-made Co 3 O 4 was of nano size, with average size of about 100 nm, a BET surface area of 54.2 m 2 /g, and T eq of 1109 K at ambient pressure. The redox reactions of these ultrafine particles are fast and nearly fully reversible. The effect of adding inert Al 2 O 3 or Fe 2 O 3 was also studied, but proven to offer no kinetic benefit, while reducing the reaction heat due to their inert additive character. The findings were used in the design of a 10 kW TCES pilot plant that is currently being tested in a concentrated solar furnace .
