Drawing inspiration from the unique properties of cactus spines and desert beetle shells, we have designed a biomimetic stainless steel mesh specifically for efficient water-in-oil emulsion separation. The tapered arrays of cactus spines are prepared by a light-curing-templating method, and the hydrophobic regions are constructed by adhering hydrophobic silica nanoparticles to the surface of the mesh. This innovative design takes full advantage of the unique properties of these two natural plants, which can agglomerate tiny emulsified water to achieve an emulsion-breaking effect only under static conditions. At the same time, the stainless steel mesh with the conical arrays has a high water-in-oil emulsion separation efficiency (up to 99.6%), high permeance (2400 L·m–2·h–1·bar–1), and good cycling performance. The concept of dual biomimetic explored in this work may extend beyond oil–water separation to encompass various applications, such as fog collection, droplet manipulation, and more.

To address the escalating electromagnetic wave (EMW) pollution, the development of advanced absorbers with lightweight property, broad bandwidth, and strong attenuation capabilities is urgently required. This study fabricates bionic hierarchical porous carbon fiber (HPCF) featuring a honeycomb-like skeleton and surface cactus-spine-like hollow nanotubes for high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA). The HPCF is synthesized via an integrated process combining electro-blowing spinning, hydrothermal reaction, and carbonization technique. The honeycomb-like skeleton of the porous carbon fiber forms an electrically conductive network, enhancing conductive loss. The surface cactus-spine-like hollow nanotubes create abundant interfaces and sharp conductive tips, promoting interfacial and dipole polarization loss. The synergistic honeycomb-like/cactus-spine-like structure offers a large specific surface area and high porosity, which not only facilitates multiple reflection/scattering to dissipate EMW energy, but also traps high volume fraction of air to improve impedance matching. Notably, at a low filler loading of 15 wt% and a thin thickness of 1.5 mm, the optimized HPCF -2 achieves an ultra-strong reflection loss (RL) of −55.35 dB, and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL < −10 dB) of 3.80 GHz. This work presents a bionic strategy for developing lightweight, broadband, and high-efficiency absorbers for next-generation stealth and shielding applications.

Cactus spinelike materials have attracted much attention due to high fog harvesting efficiency, but great challenges in structure fabrication and structural controllability still remain. In this study, we proposed a magnetically driven spray-coating method to fabricate a cactus spinelike superhydrophobic Fe3O4 vertical array on nonwoven cotton fabric. This method is simple and controllable; a mixture containing magnetic Fe3O4 particles and organosilicon resin was atomized into tiny droplets and arranged along the magnetic field lines. Different from the traditional method to prepare a cactus spinelike structure via liquid flow under magnet, which is usually accompanied with a big structure size and an unobvious structure feature due to the high viscosity of magnetic liquid. However, if the magnetic liquid is transformed into tiny magnetic droplets by a spraying method, it is promising to prepare micrometer-scale conical structures, and the reduction degree of bionic structures is high. When the fabricated structure is used for fog harvesting, it shows an extremely high efficiency of approximately 6.33 g cm–2 h–1, which is superior to most state-of-the-art fog harvesting materials. Considering the advantages of simplicity, structure controllability, and high fog harvesting rate, the reported strategy provides an avenue to build up high-performance fog harvesting materials.

Bioinspired fog harvesting materials offer a promising solution to freshwater scarcity. However, the integration of diverse biomimetic structures for ultrahigh fog harvesting collection rate remains challenging. This work presents a facile and scalable fabrication process for cellulose-based fog harvesting fiber (PSF) with multiple biomimetic features. The process involves wet spinning of cellulose and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), followed by dip-coating with cellulose and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Selective leaching of PVP can create microgrooves on fiber surface mimicking cactus spine structure, while dip-coating forms spindle knots and wettability gradients inspired by spider silk and Nepenthes pitcher. It is hypothesized that these bioinspired features enhance Laplace pressure differentials, wettability and curvature gradients, eventually facilitating the fog harvesting collection rate in terms of fog adsorption/capture, water film formation, droplet transport and shedding. Consequently, the resultant PSF achieves an exceptional fog collection rate of 180.62 g/cm 2 /h, 47 times higher than conventional spider silk. This study offers a novel insight and a scalable model for multi-biomimetic fog harvesting systems.
