Micropillar-enabled tough adhesion and enhanced sensing

Xi Xia,Xingxing Chen,Junli Shi,Zhibin Li,Bingfa Jiang,Kaixi Huang,Mengxue Guo,Zeyun Yang,Zelong Liao,Chaoyang Song,Chuan Fei Guo

Skin-like sensors are key for humanoid robots and wearables. Achieving both robust interfaces and promoted sensing performances in soft sensors may enable their applications in extreme mechanical conditions of high shear. However, strong interfacial adhesion in multilayer sensors often compromise sensing properties. Here, we design hyperbranched polyurethane micropillars with (diameter < length of flaw sensitivity) that serve dual roles as an adhesion layer for exceptional mechanical stability, and adaptive spacer for enhanced sensing properties. We show a strong size effect of the structure to toughen the interface, with ultrahigh interfacial toughness up to 5,095 J m −2 at a 50-μm pillar diameter. Simultaneously, the micropillars enhance sensitivity and limit of detection by decreasing the stiffness via elastic buckling and enable a rapid response to the acoustic range by reducing energy loss during loading and unloading. The sensors are ideal for the manipulation of heavy objects in humanoid robots and other applications.

A Melamine Sponge-MXene@CsPbBr3 Aerogel for Flexible Tactile Sensor with Decoupled Multimodal Sensing Capacity

Ying Cao,Shihao Deng,Shuang Xia,Ju Bai,Yuan Shen,Ting Zhang,Tie Li

Humanoid robots, except the sensing requirement of force and temperature, will get high risk of prolonged exposure to complex light conditions, especially the UV radiation in automotive baking workshop, outer space, et. al, which will make the circuits and electronic components extremely prone to aging, needing timely assessment as well. Here, a multimodal flexible tactile sensor is assembled by utilizing a novel melamine sponge-MXene@CsPbBr3 hybrid aerogel as the sensing unit, which the melamine sponge provides the deformable support skeleton, the MXene realizes the functions of piezoresistive pressure sensing and thermoelectric temperature detecting, and the CsPbBr3 realizes not only the light sensing behavior, especially the visual capacity of ultraviolet excited photoluminescence, but also the synergetic enhancement of thermoelectric ability. Via these different kinds of sensing mechanisms, the derived flexible tactile sensor realizes the multimodal response to pressure, temperature and ultraviolet without cross-coupling. Furthermore, via using a machine learning algorithm, it can distinguish hardness and material of six automotive parts with high recognition accuracy of 98.2 % and 98.6 %, respectively. Moreover, based on the visual photoluminescence capability, a sensory array is assembled to successfully recognize different shapes. These provides a feasible way to protect the robots when using in complex operating environments.

Ultrathin Elastomer Nanofiber-Based Skin-Like Electronic with Multi-Mode Sensing Capabilities

Xianhong Zheng,Shuai Wang,Binbin Ding,Hongye Xia,Zhi Liu,Zhiqi Zhao,Guiyang Li,Zongqian Wang,Lihua Zou,Wentao Cao

The development of skin-like multimodal electronic devices (SMED) is pivotal for advancing humanoid robotics and wearable technologies, enabling seamless interaction with and perception of complex environments. However, integrating comprehensive sensing capabilities with multifunctionality, while maintaining superior permeability, biocompatibility, and wearer comfort, remains a significant challenge. Here, a SMED platform capable of detecting multiple external stimuli (i.e., strain, pressure, temperature, and humidity) via a seamless integration strategy is reported. The SMED combines exceptional permeability, stretchability, biocompatibility, high transparency, and robust wet adhesion to skin, creating a stable and conformal skin-electrode interface reminiscent of an electronic tattoo. The device exhibits unparalleled sensitivity to environmental and physiological cues, outperforming existing state-of-the-art sensors in terms of response range and sensitivity. This study demonstrates its versatility in real-world applications, such as continuous electrocardiogram monitoring under wet conditions, precise gesture recognition, real-time temperature/humidity sensing, and comprehensive monitoring of human physiological signals. This work not only advances the field of wearable electronics but also paves the way for next-generation wearable electronics, offering transformative potential for health monitoring, human-machine interfaces, and beyond. By bridging the gap between functionality and wearability, the SMED platform represents a significant leap toward the realization of truly interactive and adaptive electronic systems. Graphical A skin-like multimodal electronic device (SMED) is developed, integrating strain, pressure, temperature, and humidity sensing capabilities into an ultrathin, permeable, and biocompatible platform. With exceptional sensitivity, wet adhesion, and transparency, the SMED enables continuous ECG monitoring, gesture recognition, and environmental sensing. This innovation bridges functionality and wearability, advancing next-generation wearable electronics for health monitoring and human-machine interfaces.
