The articulating joints consist of a three-layer lubricating structure, which combines soft and hard materials, including cartilage, polymer brushes, and a hydration layer. This structure leverages the synergistic effects of fluid and boundary lubrication to maintain ultra-low friction under different pressures on the same frictional surface. In this study, a biomimetic multilayer lubricating structure inspired by joint tissues is constructed using single-crystalline diamond nanosheets (SCND) as the hard phase material. Through a facile chemical reduction method and employing polydopamine (PDA) as a "bridge", a soft phase material is deposited onto the SCND surface to produce diamond composite silver nanocomposites (SCND@PDA@Ag). Subsequently, two solvent-free SCND@PDA@Ag nanofluids are prepared by grafting organic canopy substances onto the SCND@PDA@Ag surface via ionic bonds or covalent bonds, referred to as SCND@PDA@Ag-ionic bonding nanofluid and SCND@PDA@Ag-covalent bonding nanofluid, respectively. The findings reveal that the SCND@PDA@Ag-covalent bonding solvent-free nanofluid exhibits superior lubricating performance for steel/SiC contacts. The friction coefficient and wear rate for steel/SiC are significantly reduced by 93.2 % and 63.1 %, respectively, compared to dry friction, it's noteworthy that these results outperform those achieved by individual components of the lubricant. During the friction process, SCND and silver particles on the surface of SCND@PDA@Ag-covalent bonding solvent-free nanofluid work together to enhance lubrication synergistically. Furthermore, silver particles on the surface of SCND are released and fill into the worn surface, providing a repairing effect. This study highlights that the design of soft-hard multilayer structures offers a novel approach for researching nanocomposite materials in the field of tribology.

Natural articular cartilages exhibit extraordinary lubricating properties and excellent load-bearing capacity based on their penetrated surface lubricated biomacromolecules and gradient-oriented hierarchical structure. Hydrogels are considered as the most promising cartilage replacement materials due to their excellent flexibility, good biocompatibility, and low friction coefficient. However, the construction of high-strength, low-friction hydrogels to mimic cartilage is still a great challenge. Here, inspired by the structure and functions of natural articular cartilage, anisotropic hydrogels with horizontal and vertical orientation structure were constructed layer by layer and bonded with each other, successfully developing a bilayer oriented heterogeneous hydrogel with a high load-bearing capacity, low friction, and excellent fatigue resistance. The bilayer hydrogel exhibited a high compressive strength of 5.21 ± 0.45 MPa and a compressive modulus of 4.06 ± 0.31 MPa due to the enhancement mechanism of the anisotropic structure within the bottom anisotropic hydrogel. Moreover, based on the synergistic effect of the high load-bearing capacity of the bottom layer and the lubrication of the surface layer, the bilayer hydrogel possesses excellent biotribological properties in hard/soft (0.032) and soft/soft (0.028) contact, which is close to that of natural cartilage. It is worth noting that the bilayer oriented heterogeneous hydrogel is able to withstand repeated loading without fatigue crack. Therefore, this work could open up a new avenue for constructing cartilage-like materials with both high strength and low friction.

The creation of bionic hydrogel characterized by optimal friction and load-bearing is essential for implantable artificial materials. High-stiffness and robust poly (methylacrylamide and methacrylic acid) hydrogels (P(MAAm-MAAc)) were synthesized using intensive cross-linking and intermolecular/intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Subsequently, an embedded lubricating layer was developed on the robust base, which formed layered structure similar to articular cartilage. It possesses distinctive mechanical characteristics (tensile strength: 3.9–4.4 MPa; elastic modulus: 27.8–38.6 MPa), along with superior lubricating and load-bearing capabilities. When water served as lubricant, the hydrogels exhibited low friction coefficient (COF ∼ 0.039), negligible wear, and sustained endurance over 18,000 sliding cycles. This high-stiffness and robust multilayer hydrogel possesses extensive application potential in bionic articular cartilage, medical devices, and other domains.

Irregular partial-thickness cartilage defect is a common pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA) with no available treatment in clinical practice. Currently, cartilage tissue engineering is only suitable for a limited area of full-thickness cartilage defect. Here, we design a biomimetic joint paint for the intractable partial-thickness cartilage defect repair. The joint paint, composed of a bridging layer of chondroitin sulfate and a surface layer of gelatin methacrylate with hyaluronic acid, can quickly and tightly adhere to the cartilage defect by light activation. Being treated by the joint paint, the group of rabbit and pig models with partial-thickness cartilage defects showed a restoration of a smooth cartilage surface and the preservation of normal glycosaminoglycan content, whereas the untreated control group exhibited serious progressive OA development. This paint treatment functions by prohibiting chondrocyte apoptosis, maintaining chondrocyte phenotype, and preserving the content of glycosaminoglycan in the partial-thickness cartilage defects. These findings illustrated that the biomimetic joint paint is an effective and revolutionary therapeutics for the patients with noncurable partial-thickness cartilage defects.
