Bio-Mimetic Actuators of a Photothermal-Responsive Vitrimer Liquid Crystal Elastomer with Robust, Self-Healing, Shape Memory, and Reconfigurable Properties

Die Tang,Lun Zhang,Xiaoyu Zhang,Liqiang Xu,Ke Li,Aimin Zhang

Soft actuators with apparent uniqueness in exhibiting complex shape morphing are highly desirable for artificial intelligence applications. However, for the majority of soft actuators, in general, it is challenging to achieve versatility, durability, and configurability simultaneously. Enormous works are devoted to meet the multifunctional smart actuators, to little effect. Herein, self-healing and bio-mimetic smart actuators are proposed based on azobenzene chromophores and dynamic disulfide bonds. Benefiting from the dynamic and drivable vitrimer liquid crystal elastomer (V-LCE) materials, a series of actuators with single or compound dynamic three-dimensional structures were fabricated, which were capable of double-stimuli response and complex “bionic” motions, such as the blooming of a flower, grasping and loosening an object, and so forth. Moreover, these flexible actuators showed fascinating properties, such as high robustness, excellent elasticity–plasticity shape-memory properties (Rf and Rr are close to 100%), easily reconfigurable property, and self-healing. This smart V-LCE provides a guideline to design and fabricate soft versatility actuators, which has prospects for developing smart bionic and artificial intelligence devices.

Shape- and Color-Switchable Polyurethane Thermochromic Actuators Based on Metal-Containing Ionic Liquids

Zhenyong Wang,Xiao Hou,Ning Duan,Yongyuan Ren,Feng Yan

Many creatures have excellent control over their form, color, and morphology, allowing them to respond to the interaction of environmental stimuli better. Here, the bioinspired synergistic shape–color-switchable actuators based on thermally induced shape-memory triethanolamine cross-linked polyurethane (TEAPU) and thermochromic ionic liquids (ILs) were prepared. The thermochromic ILs with various metalized anions, including bis(1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) tetrachloro nickelate ([Bmim]2[NiCl4]) and bis(1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) tetrachloride cobalt ([Bmim]2[CoCl4]), are investigated. The actuators exhibit thermochromic response, as evidenced by a shift in the color of the composites, which is due to the formation of the tetrahedral complex MCl42– (M = Ni and Co) after dehydration. The shape–color-switchable thermochromic actuators have strong molecular interaction between TEAPU and ILs and can mimic natural flowers and change the color and shape quickly in a narrow temperature range (30–70 °C). In addition, these thermochromic actuators can lift more than 50 times their weight and withstand strains of more than 1100%. The results represent the potential application in artificial muscle actuators and intelligent camouflages.

Bio-Inspired Stimuli-Responsive Ti3C2Tx/PNIPAM Anisotropic Hydrogels for High-Performance Actuators

Qian Yan,Renjie Ding,Haowen Zheng,Pengyang Li,Zonglin Liu,Zhong Chen,Jinhua Xiong,Fuhua Xue,Xu Zhao,Qingyu Peng,Xiaodong He

Near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive hydrogels have the advantages of high precision, remote control and excellent biocompatibility, which are widely used in soft biomimetic actuators. The process by which water molecules diffuse can directly affect the deformation of hydrogel. Therefore, it remains a serious challenge to improve the response speed of hydrogel actuator. Herein, an anisotropic photo-responsive conductive hydrogel is designed by a directional freezing method. Due to the anisotropy of the MXene-based PNIPAM/MXene directional (PMD) hydrogel, its mechanical properties and conductivity are enhanced in a specific direction. At the same time, with the presence of the internal directional channels and the assistance of capillary force, the PMD hydrogel can achieve a volume deswelling of 70% in 2 s under light irradiation, further building a hydrogel actuator with a fast response performance. Additionally, the hydrogel actuator can lift an object 40 times its weight by a distance of 6 mm, realizing the advantages of both rapid responsiveness and high driving strength, which makes the hydrogel actuator have important application significance in remote control, microflow valve, and soft robot.

Naphthalimide-Based Aggregation-Induced Emissive Polymeric Hydrogels for Fluorescent Pattern Switch and Biomimetic Actuators

Hao Liu,Shuxin Wei,Huiyu Qiu,Beibei Zhan,Qingquan Liu,Wei Lu,Jiawei Zhang,To Ngai,Tao Chen

Substituted naphthalimide (NI) moieties are highly versatile and newly recognized aggregation-induced emission (AIE) building blocks for many potentially useful smart molecules, polymers, and nanoparticles. However, the introduction of NI fluorophore into cross-linked polymeric networks to prepare AIE-active hydrogels still remains underdeveloped. Herein, a novel naphthalimide-based aggregation-induced emissive polymeric hydrogel is reported, followed by its proof-of-concept applications as fluorescence pattern switch and biomimetic actuator. The hydrogel, bearing semi-interpenetrating polymer networks, is synthesized starting from N -isopropylacrylamide, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, and a newly designed NI monomer (4-phenoxy- N -allyl-1,8-naphthalimide, PhAN). Rational molecular design for AIE-active PhAN monomer lies in modification of the NI core with rigid and bulky phenoxy group to break its planarity to produce desirable propeller-shaped molecular conformation. The as-prepared hydrogel is proved to be a aggregation-induced blue-light-emitting hydrogel. It also shows volume phase transition behavior and is endowed with thermally responsive synergistic emission and transmittance change, thus enabling simultaneous regulation of two optical properties merely by one single stimulus. These useful advantages further encourage fabrication of several proto-type fluorescence pattern switching and biomimetic actuating devices. This study may not only enlarge the list of fluorescent hydrogels but also serve as a novel smart optical platform for potential anticounterfeiting, sensing, displaying, or actuating applications.

A Tissue Paper/Hydrogel Composite Light-Responsive Biomimetic Actuator Fabricated by In Situ Polymerization

Qijun Wu,Chao Ma,Lian Chen,Ye Sun,Xianshuo Wei,Chunxin Ma,Hongliang Zhao,Xiuling Yang,Xiaofan Ma,Chunmei Zhang,Gaigai Duan

Stimulus-responsive hydrogels are an important member of smart materials owing to their reversibility, soft/wet properties, and biocompatibility, which have a wide range of applications in the field of intelligent actuations. However, poor mechanical property and complicated fabrication process limit their further applications. Herein, we report a light-responsive tissue paper/hydrogel composite actuator which was developed by combining inkjet-printed tissue paper with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel through simple in situ polymerization. Due to the high strength of natural tissue paper and the strong interaction within the interface of the bilayer structure, the mechanical property of the composite actuator was highly enhanced, reaching 1.2 MPa of tensile strength. Furthermore, the light-responsive actuation of remote manipulation can be achieved because of the stamping graphite with high efficiency of photothermal conversion. Most importantly, we also made a few remotely controlled biomimetic actuating devices based on the near-infrared (NIR) light response of this composite actuator. This work provides a simple strategy for the construction of biomimetic anisotropic actuators and will inspire the exploration of new intelligent materials.

Bioinspired Smart Moisture Actuators Based on Nanoscale Cellulose Materials and Porous, Hydrophilic EVOH Nanofibrous Membranes

Qing Zhu,Yuxia Jin,Wen Wang,Gang Sun,Dong Wang

Biomimetic actuators with rapid response speed, high sensitivity, and selectivity to external stimulus have found potential applications in smart switches, artificial muscles, and soft robots. The nanoscale structures of actuators enhance the exposed area to stimulus as well as enable versatile control of the actuation behaviors. Freestanding, flexible, and porous water-driven actuators with poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH) nanofibers as the substrate and super hydrophilic nanoscale cellulose materials (cellulose nanofibers, cellulose nanocrystals, bacterial cellulose) as the active substance via uniform mixing or surface depositing were fabricated. The effects of the EVOH nanofiber substrate, the structures and concentrations of nanoscale cellulose materials, as well as the different environmental stimuli like humidity and temperature on the performance of actuators were studied. The water-driven actuation mechanism was proposed from the macroscopic and molecular aspects and the analysis of Gibbs free energy and mechanical energy. The actuator could bend to an angle of 180° and recovered less than 1 s for more than 100 circles without compromising properties when the environmental moisture changed. Furthermore, the multidimensional deformation behaviors of the water-stimulated actuators could also be well tuned by varying the orientations of the nanoscale materials. Additionally, the applications of the prepared actuator were demonstrated.

Bionic energy-storage ejection actuator of electrothermally stimulated liquid crystal elastomer

Yaoyao Jiang,Xinyi Tao,Xu Dong,Xiangli Wen,Qingyue Li,Ningyi Yuan,Ziyao Zhou,LvZhou Li,Jianning Ding

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) have broad application potential in flexible robots and actuators. However, developing practical flexible actuators with simple sensing capability and self-adhesive properties remains a key challenge in this field. Inspired by the rapid tongue-ejection and capture mechanisms observed in certain animals, an energy-storage ejection actuator based on electrothermal stimulation of LCEs was designed. An amide bond (AM) intermediate was introduced into the liquid crystal polymer to fabricate the AM-LCE film, forming a strong microphase separation structure through hydrogen-bond interactions between the amide groups. This configuration enhanced the breaking tensile strength (5 MPa) and actuating strain (32.8 %) of the LCE film while effectively reducing the isotropic–anisotropic phase transition temperature ( T NI ∼56.5 °C). Based on a strain mismatch strategy, the AM-LCE film, polyimide (PI) heating film and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film were integrated into an energy-storage ejection structure to effectively address the problem of interfacial delamination between layers. The thickness and pre-stretching ratio of the AM-LCE and PDMS films were optimised to enable rapid ejection, grasping, and adhesion at 12 V, with a response time of 1–9 s. This study further broadens the design framework of LCE-based materials and demonstrates their potential applications in bionic ejection actuators.
