A multi-stimulus-responsive bionic fish microrobot for remote intelligent control applications

Wenguang Yang,Xiaowen Wang,Zhen Wang,Zheng Yuan,Zhixing Ge,Haibo Yu

In nature, all creatures have their unique characteristics that allow them to adapt to the complex and changeable living environments. In recent years, bionic fish has received increased attention from the research community, and many fish-like microrobots driven by the Marangoni effect have been developed. They are generally characterized by easy operation and rapid driving. However, traditional fish-like microrobots can only be driven by a single stimulus and move on two-dimensional (2D) gas–liquid interfaces, which greatly limits their ability in obstacle avoidance and transportation. In this article, we propose a multi-stimulus-responsive bionic fish microrobot, which is made of temperature-responsive hydrogel poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM). This microrobot is impregnated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Fe3O4 and therefore has magnetic and photothermal conversion properties. Under the action of optical, magnetic or ethanol molecules, the microrobot can perform complex programmable translational motion on 2D surfaces and controllable rising and sinking, while realizing motion simulation and obstacle avoidance. The microrobot is expected to be used for a wide range of applications in intelligent control systems.

Drag Reduction Using Lubricant-Impregnated Anisotropic Slippery Surfaces Inspired by Bionic Fish Scale Surfaces Containing Micro-/Nanostructured Arrays

Wanting Rong,Haifeng Zhang,Tengjiao Zhang,Zhigang Mao,Xiaowei Liu,Keguan Song

Inspired by the bionic fish scale surfaces containing micro/nanostructured arrays, herein, the applications of lubricant-impregnated anisotropic slippery surfaces (LIASSs) using laser ablation of aluminum–magnesium alloys are proposed. Different hydrophobic properties are presented on the LIASSs along the parallel direction and the reverse direction defined as directions A and B of bionic fish scale micro/nanostructures. A self-assembled solid–liquid interface friction test device is set up to demonstrate the drag reduction property of LIASSs. The drag reduction ratios are found to be 51.09% and 44.88% along directions A and B, respectively. With the increase in the velocity, the drag reduction ratios of LIASSs can also be kept near 50%. Simulation models are established to study the drag reduction mechanism of LIASSs in laminar flows. Liquid–liquid repellency has a lubricating effect that can increase mobility and reduce viscous resistance. In this way, it improves the fluidity of the liquid and reduces drag. The drag reduction ratio in direction A is superior to that in direction B for the same flow velocity. The results of the simulation are consistent with the experiments results. LIASSs represents an effective strategy to drag reduction and reducing energy consumption in liquid directional transport and marine vessels.

Design of a Flexible Poly(L-Lactic Acid) Piezoelectric Sensor with Bionic Fish-Scale Microstructure for Detecting Human Swallowing Function

Yi Xue,Zhaohua Liu,Ivan S. Babichuk,Yijie Liu,Jian Yang

Flexible pressure sensors have broad application prospects in the field of human vital sign monitoring. However, the challenge of achieving excellent performance while maintaining low cost and energy consumption remains a bottleneck in further expanding their application. This study endeavors to tackle the challenge by improving the performance of flexible poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) piezoelectric sensors and fabricating the encapsulation layer with a fish-scale microstructure (FSm) via the Digital Light Processing (DLP) technique. The FSm sensor presented herein exhibits a high sensitivity of 24.54 mV·kPa −1 and excellent linearity (R 2 > 0.99) in the low-pressure range (<20 kPa), with an optimal parameter design (200 µm distance and 400 µm height) of the microstructure. As a result, a 477% increase in sensitivity is obtained compared to conventional PLLA sensors. Simulation analyses are conducted to evaluate the impact of fish-scale orientation on the detection of human swallowing signals. The physiological pressure signals associated with the swallowing process are recorded using the FSm sensor in a wearable format. Moreover, the interference (additional) of vibration signals is effectively eliminated through further voice tests. The results indicated that FSm sensors hold promise for human swallowing health monitoring and action recognition, offering a novel approach to the treatment of swallowing disorders.

Combining Solid-State Shear Milling and FFF 3D-Printing Strategy to Fabricate High-Performance Biomimetic Wearable Fish-Scale PVDF-Based Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters

Haoran Pei,Shaohong Shi,Yinghong Chen,Yu Xiong,Qinniu Lv

High-performance flexible piezoelectric polymer–ceramic composites are in high demand for increasing wearable energy-harvesting applications. In this work, a strategy combining solid-state shear milling (S3M) and fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D-printing technology is proposed for the fabrication of high-performance biomimetic wearable piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/tetraphenylphosphonium chloride (TPPC)/barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanocomposite energy harvesters with a biomimetic fish-scale-like metamaterial. The S3M technology could greatly improve the dispersion of BaTiO3 sub-micrometer particles and the interfacial compatibility, resulting in better processability and piezoelectric performance of the nanocomposites. Typically, the FFF 3D printed energy harvester incorporating 30 wt % BaTiO3 showed the highest piezoelectric outputs with an open-circuit voltage of 11.5 V and a short-circuit current of 220 nA. It could hence drive nine green LEDs to work normally. In addition, a 3D-printed biomimetic wearable energy harvester inspired by an environmentally adaptive fish-scale-like metamaterial was further fabricated. The fish-scale-like energy harvester could harvest energy through different deformation motions and successfully recharge a 4.7 μF capacitor by being mounted on a bicycle tire and the tire’s rolling. This work not only provides a 3D printing strategy for designing diversified and complex geometric structures but also paves the way for further applications in flexible, wearable, self-powered electromechanical energy harvesters.

Cardiomyocyte-Driven Structural Color Actuation in Anisotropic Inverse Opals

Yixuan Shang,Zhuoyue Chen,Fanfan Fu,Lingyu Sun,Changmin Shao,Wei Jin,Hong Liu,Yuanjin Zhao

Biohybrid actuators composed of living tissues and artificial materials have attracted increasing interest in recent years because of their extraordinary function of dynamically sensing and interacting with complex bioelectrical signals. Here, a compound biohybrid actuator with self-driven actuation and self-reported feedback is designed based on an anisotropic inverse opal substrate with periodical elliptical macropores and a hydrogel filling. The benefit of the anisotropic surface topography and high biocompatibility of the hydrogel is that the planted cardiomyocytes could be induced into a highly ordered alignment with recovering autonomic beating ability on the elastic substrate. Because of the cell elongation and contraction during cardiomyocyte beating, the anisotropic inverse opal substrates undergo a synchronous cycle of deformation actuations, which can be reported as corresponding shifts of their photonic band gaps and structural colors. These self-driven biohybrid actuators could be used as elements for the construction of a soft-bodied structural color robot, such as a biomimetic guppy with a swinging tail. Besides, with the integration of a self-driven biohybrid actuator and microfluidics, the advanced heart-on-a-chip system with the feature of microphysiological visuality has been developed for integrated cell monitoring and drug testing. This anisotropic inverse opal-derived biohybrid actuator could be widely applied in biomedical engineering.

Three-dimensional polylactic acid@graphene oxide/chitosan sponge bionic filter: Highly efficient adsorption of crystal violet dye

G. Zhou,K.P. Wang,H.W. Liu,L. Wang,X.F. Xiao,D.D. Dou,Y.B. Fan

Owing to low bearing capacity and efficiency, traditional filters or adsorbents for removal of contaminants like crystal violet (CV) dye required frequent replacement. Besides, the combination of three-dimensional (3D) printing and bionics could break the constraints of traditional configuration. In this study, a novel depth-type hybrid polylactic acid (PLA)@graphene oxide (GO)/chitosan (CS) sponge filter with bionic fish-mouth structure was prepared and fabricated, assisted by 3D printing and double freeze-drying technology, according to the theories of vertical cross-step filtration and swirling flow. And GO/CS sponge and its filtering device were characterized by FITR, SEM, water adsorption and so on. Moreover, it was explained that the impact factors on dye removal mechanism, like GO content (or CS content), contact time, pH, temperature and bionic configuration. As a result, the bionic 3D filtering device demonstrated excellent removal efficiency (97.8   ±   0.5% for CV) and GO/CS sponge exhibited higher strength (74.5   ±   3.5   MPa) at the condition of GO content of 9   wt%, contact time of 46   min, pH of 8 and 35   °C, respectively. Therefore, the resulting 3D PLA@GO/CS sponge bionic filter via gravity and vortex driving provided new alternatives for effectively dye-water separation, and it showed great promise for application of biological macromolecules in adsorption.
