Owing to the lack of chromophores and ionizable functional groups, it is a significant challenge to determine perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF) by traditional high-performance liquid chromatography or liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, especially at a low concentration. In this work a unique photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing strip has been developed for the first time for the detection of PFOSF. The sensing strip is cost effective and disposable, whereby BiOI nanoflake arrays are fabricated on a home-made screen-printed electrode through a facile one-step in-situ electrodeposition process, and then the molecule tags (i.e., molecularly imprinted polymers) for PFOSF are subsequently grafted on the surface. Benefitting from a three-dimensional interconnected framework, the as-fabricated sensing strip has a rapid response to the interfacial steric hindrance effect between the sensing platform and the target analyte of PFOSF. The elaborated PEC sensor exhibits a outstanding linear response to a concentration of PFOSF ranging from 0.05 to 500.0 ppb and a detection limit down to 0.01 ppb (S/N = 3) Furthermore, our low-cost and highly sensitive sensor has been further explored to detect PFOSF in real water samples, showing satisfactory results.

The development of novel rare earth fluorescent materials and the exploration of their applications have consistently been focal points of research in the fields of materials science and chemistry. In this work, a novel rare earth composite material with good photo-fluorescence properties and self-supporting has been prepared via a simple ultrasonic solvent reaction method. Initially, the Phen moieties is immobilized onto the surface of a self-supporting fiberglass paper using ICPTES, followed by the coordination of Eu(TTA)3 moieties with Phen moieties through a convenient ultrasonic solvent reaction. The resulting GF–Phen–Eu(TTA)3 has been characterized using FTIR, UV-Vis DRS, fluorescence measurements, and so on. The results indicate that the composite material exhibits strong fluorescent emission and presents a vivid red color under ultraviolet light. Further research has shown that the fluorescence of GF–Phen–Eu(TTA)3 strips demonstrated a pronounced quenching effect in response to some transition metal ions (1 mM). Hence, the rare earth composite materials presented here can be utilized not only for the production of optical materials, but also for the development of fluorescence sensing strips.

Quick and visual detection of component contents, such as water, in a mixed solvent is important for many practical applications, and a full range detection is especially preferred. In this work, a carbon dots based ratiometric fluorescent sensor was synthesized by grafting fluorescent group (Rhodamine B, RhB) on carbon dots, and the dual emission peaks exhibited a linear ratiometric response with the change of polarity and hydrogen bond of Solvent Hansen solubility parameters. This responsive behavior is attributed to surface state photoluminescence mechanisms, and has been used for the quantitative detection of water content in ethanol with an excellent linear relationship (R 2 = 0.996), a low detection limit (0.2%), and a full detection range (0–100%). Furthermore, a paper-based ratiometric fluorescence sensing strip is also demonstrated, which exhibits good storage stability and sensitivity. This study suggests that RhB grafted carbon dots could be feasibly and effectively used as ratiometric fluorescent sensors for solvent content detection.

Mercury is a heavy metal with extreme toxicity. Thus, it is of significance to develop an effective method for mercury ion detection with high performance. In this study, carbon dots doped with nitrogen and silicon (N,Si/CQDs) were successfully prepared from folic acid and N-[3-(trimethoxysily)propyl]-ethylenediamine. The N,Si/CQDs show an obvious cyan fluorescence of 460 nm with the radiation of 350 nm. The existence of mercury ions induces the fluorescence quenching of N,Si/CQDs due to photoinduced electron transfer, which was applied for the sensitive sensing of Hg(II). More importantly, the practical application of the N,Si/CQD probe was confirmed by measurements of Hg(II) in real samples of lake water, sorghum and rice. In addition, the N,Si/CQD nanoprobe was integrated on a sensing strip for specific detection of Hg(II). Quantitative measurement of Hg(II) was realized by the outstanding linearity between the diameter (or fluorescence intensity) of the fluorescence quenching ring and the concentration of mercury ions. The sensor shows potential for rapid detection with a triple signal readout on-site and represents a larger step towards practical applications.
