Ag NW-Embedded Coaxial Nanofiber-Coated Yarns with High Stretchability and Sensitivity for Wearable Multi-Sensing Textiles

Yunling Dai,Kun Qi,Kangkang Ou,Yutang Song,Yuman Zhou,Meiling Zhou,Hongjing Song,Jianxin He,Hongbo Wang,Rongwu Wang

The emerging intelligent piezoresistive yarn/textile-based sensors are of paramount importance for skin-interface electronics, owing to their unparalleled features including softness, breathability, and easy integration with functional devices. However, employing a facile way to fabricate 1D sensing yarns with mechanical robustness, multi-functional integration, and comfortability is still demanded for satisfying the practical applications. Herein, a facile one-step synchronous conjugated electrospinning and electrospraying technique is innovatively employed to continuously construct an Ag NW-embedded polyurethane (PU) nanofiber sensing yarn (AENSY) with hierarchical architecture. This 1D AENSY with weavability and stretchability can be woven into AENSY textile-based sensors integrated with functions of strain and pressure sensing. In this embedded multi-scale architecture, Ag NWs are evenly embedded and locked in the oriented and twisted PU nanofiber (PUNF) scaffold, forming the hierarchical mechanical sensing layer on the surface of the AENSY with favorable stability. Meanwhile, the presence of the elastic PUNFs enhances porosity, elasticity, and considerable deformation space, which in turn endow the AENSY textile-based sensor with a gauge factor (GF) up to 1010, a pressure sensitivity up to 16.7 N–1, high stretchability up to 160%, and high stability under long-term cycles. In addition, the AENSY textile-based sensor exhibits light weight and the unique advantage of skin-friendliness with the human body, which can be directly and conformally attached to the curved human skin to monitor the various human movements. Furthermore, the weavable AENSYs can be integrated into smart textiles with sensing arrays, which are capable for spatial pressure and strain mapping. Thus, the continuous one-step developing process and the stable embedded-twisted fiber structure provide a promising strategy to develop innovative smart yarns and textiles for personalized healthcare and human–machine interfaces.

A Self-powered Tennis Training System Based on Micro-Nano Structured Sensing Yarn Arrays

Qian Chen,Duo Xu,Yan Yan,Zhan Qu,Haoyue Zhao,Xinyu Li,Yuying Cao,Chenhong Lang,Wasim Akram,Zhe Sun,Li Niu,Jian Fang

Wearable sensing devices can reliably track players' mobility, revolutionizing sports training. However, current sensing electronics face challenges due to their complex structures, battery dependence, and unreliable sensing signals. Here, a tennis training system is demonstrated using machine learning based on elastic self-powered sensing yarns. By employing a simple and effective strategy, piezoelectric nanofibers and triboelectric materials are integrated into a single yarn, enabling the simultaneous translation of both triboelectric and piezoelectric signals. Additionally, these yarns exhibit outstanding processability, allowing them to be machine-knitted into self-powered sensing fabrics. Due to their great sensitivity, these sensing yarns and fabrics may detect human movement with great precision. Machine learning algorithms can classify and interpret these signals to recognize various human motions. The developed tennis training system aims to maximize its benefits and provide comprehensive training for both players and coaches. This work enhances the applicability of self-powered sensing systems in smart sports monitoring and training, advancing the field of intelligent sports training.

Pumpless microfluidic sweat sensing yarn

Xinyue Guo,Qiangqiang Zhang,Chentian Zhang,Mingyue Mi,Xinxin Li,Xueping Zhang,Seeram Ramakrishna,Dongxiao Ji,Xiaohong Qin

Textile sweat sensors possess immense potential for non-invasive health monitoring. Rapid in-situ sweat capture and prevention of its evaporation are crucial for accurate and stable real-time monitoring. Herein, we introduce a unidirectional, pump-free microfluidic sweat management system to tackle this challenge. A nanofiber sheath layer on micrometer-scale sensing filaments enables this pumpless microfluidic design. Utilizing the capillary effect of the nanofibers allows for the swift capture of sweat, while the differential configuration of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the sheath and core yarns prevents sweat evaporation. The Laplace pressure difference between the cross-scale fibers facilitates the management system to ultimately expulse sweat. This results in microfluidic control of sweat without the need for external forces, resulting in rapid (<5 s), sensitive (19.8 nA μM −1 ), and stable (with signal noise and drift suppression) sweat detection. This yarn sensor can be easily integrated into various fabrics, enabling the creation of health monitoring smart garments. The garments maintain good monitoring performance even after 20 washes. This work provides a solution for designing smart yarns for high-precision, stable, and non-invasive health monitoring.

Weavable, large-scaled, rapid response, long-term stable electrochemical fabric sensor integrated into clothing for monitoring potassium ions in sweat

Lili Mo,Xiangda Ma,Longfei Fan,John H. Xin,Hui Yu

Currently, most electrochemical sensors use thin films , single fiber or yarn as sensing unit. However, the weaving process remains challenging along with properties such as a large sensing area, rapid response and long-term stable monitoring. Herein, an electrochemical fabric sensor was developed based on a skin-core structured sensing yarn for in-situ monitoring of potassium ion (K + ) concentrations in human sweat and this was achieved through a simple but novel electro-assisted core spinning technique (EACST). The nanofibers in the skin layer of the induction yarn showed excellent hydrophilicity and high specific surface area (8.85 m 2 /g) as well as significant differences in hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the warp and weft yarns of the fabric. As such, they could achieve absorption of sweat limit domain in the skin sensing area, so that the sensor can respond quickly within a short time (2.1 s) and achieve long-term stable sensing (above 6000 s). In addition, the sensor exhibited excellent selectivity , potential reproducibility as well as low noise and signal drift (3.6 × 10 −2  mV/s). The large-area (55 cm × 35 cm) of the electrochemical fabric sensor could also be sewn into clothing for integration onto the human body where it could effectively collect sweat for real-time in-situ monitoring of K + signals in human sweat.
