Enhancement of mass transfer through bubbling effect during extraction and reaction in biphasic systems containing ionic liquid

Hui Chen,Jinxia Zhou,Jingbo Mao,Jingmei Yin,Shenmin Li

Separation of a compound from an ionic liquid through extraction usually results in a low mass transfer rate because of the high viscosity of the ionic liquid and the large density difference between the ionic liquid and organics even under strong stirring. An improved interface mass transfer during extraction or biphasic reaction was realized by creating a bubbling effect in a biphasic system containing an ionic liquid. In a model biphasic system containing 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) as the solvent phase and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) as the extraction phase, the bubbling reagents partitioned in the [BMIM]Cl phase, such as methanol, ethanol and acetonitrile, exhibit dynamic equilibrium between the two phases through constant gasification from and dissolution into the [BMIM]Cl phase. Bubbling increases the interface area and dynamically enhances the turbulence of the mixture; both phenomena are beneficial for fast transfer of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from the ionic liquid phase to the extraction phase. The organic solvents suitable as bubbling reagents were identified, and the key parameters in establishing bubbling biphasic systems were determined.

Microbubbles intensification and mechanism of wet air oxidation process of MDEA-containing wastewater

Jun Zhao,ZongJian Liu,Lin Zhang,Qun Cui,HaiYan Wang

In order to the intensification of gas–liquid mass transfer of MDEA-containing wastewater during wet air oxidation (WAO) process, the microbubbles and millimetre bubbles were applied by fine-pore sparger (5 and 20–30 μm) and single pore sparger (6.35 mm), respectively. Effect of the superficial gas velocity on the average microbubble size, gas holdup and oxygen mass transfer coefficient (KLa) of MDEA-containing wastewater at the ambient conditions was studied. The results showed that the microbubbles (less than 1 mm) were beneficial to enhance mass transfer process and had a higher dissolved oxygen concentration during WAO process of MDEA-containing wastewater owing to higher gas holdup and larger oxygen mass transfer coefficient. The COD removal ratio was 66% at low superficial gas velocity (ug = 0.3 cm/s) in WAO process by microbubbles, while it achieved at high superficial gas velocity (ug = 3.0 cm/s) by millimetre bubbles. The critical oxygen mass transfer coefficient KLa was 0.183 min−1 of MDEA-containing wastewater by 20–30 and 5 μm fine pore sparger, which was 2∼5 times more than that of single pore sparger (<0.1 min−1). The microbubbles could improve dissolved oxygen concentration and enhance the formation of hydroxyl radical at short time with atmospheric pressure. During the WAO process, the MDEA would be converted into intermediates including formic acid, acetic acid, ammonium, nitrite and nitrate. The WAO process with microbubbles could significantly improve the gas–liquid mass transfer performance at low superficial gas velocity and greatly reduce air consumption for MDEA-containing wastewater.

Surface Design of Hierarchical Zeolites for Mass Transport Enhancement

Bo-Jun Zeng,Si-Ming Wu,Ge Tian,Ming-Bin Gao,Li-Ying Wang,Lu Wu,Xuan Wu,Liang Mao,Gang-Gang Chang,Christoph Janiak,Xiao-Yu Yang

The exceptional performance of hierarchical zeolites is closely related to the diffusion process for applications in oil refining and chemical synthesis. However, the knowledge of structure-diffusion-reactivity relationships, and particularly the dynamically evolving data of guest molecules in catalysis, for hierarchical zeolites is still incomplete. Herein, a dual structure-directing agents’ strategy is used to synthesize hierarchical ZSM-5 with fish scale-like micro-nano structures (F-ZSM-5) in fluoride medium. The structure-diffusion-reactivity relationships of F-ZSM-5 and conventional ZSM-5 crystals while catalyzing the oligomerization of furfuryl alcohol are elucidated by using an in situ microimaging technique. Additionally, distinct differences of catalytic performance are observed in individual zeolite crystals due to their different nano-architectures, suggesting the high correlation between diffusion and reaction rate and crystal morphologies. Observations made in this investigation deepen the understanding of molecular transport in zeolites and provide guidance for the rational design of desired nanostructures that lead to optimal catalytic properties.

Enhanced Mass Transfer and Improved Catalyst Recovery in a Stirred Reactor by Polymeric Ionic Liquids Modified 3D Printed Devices

Juanjuan Wu,Ying Yan,Lijing Zhang,Zizhen Qin,Shengyang Tao

Mass transfer and catalyst recovery are both influential factors in heterogeneous catalytic processes, which significantly affect the reaction efficiency. Therefore, design and fabrication of reactors and catalysts with reasonable structure and property are central issues in heterogeneous reactions. Herein, agitating impeller (AI) with prismatic structure and catalytic property is conveniently constructed via the combination of 3D printing technology and polymeric ionic liquids (PILs). The further modification of the PILs on impellers endowed them with the ability of ion exchange, which helped to load Pd nanoparticles on the surface as catalysts for reduction, Suzuki coupling, and dye decolorization reactions. Prisms on the impellers significantly enhance the catalytic efficiency of these reactions through improving the mass transfer. The yield reaches nearly 100%. Catalytic impellers could be easily separated from the reactor and without a visible leak of Pd catalysts so that they could repeatedly be used more than ten times with high performance. The numerical simulation and experimental characterizations are both used to explore the mechanism of the mass transfer and the activity of the catalytic surface, which give a full understanding of the benefits of 3D printing and PILs in heterogeneous reactions.

Asymmetrical Bullet-Shaped imprinted nanomotors for enhanced selective Pb(II) Removal: On-the-Move recognition and Capturing

Jinxin Liu,Pan Wang,Hengjia Zhu,Jianming Pan

Conventional heavy metal adsorbents are limited by passive mass transfer mechanisms that constrain separation efficiency in practical applications. Herein, we report a novel approach integrating autonomous nanomotor propulsion with selective molecular recognition for enhanced Pb(II) removal. Bullet-shaped Janus nanomotor adsorbents (JSNMs@IIPs) were synthesized through asymmetric emulsion templating, featuring silver nanoparticle-catalyzed propulsion chambers and ion-imprinted polymer recognition shells. Under H 2 O 2 fuel (10.0 wt%), JSNMs@IIPs exhibited controlled autonomous motion (23.1μm s −1 ) that delivered significant kinetic enhancement with 265 % faster adsorption rates compared to static systems. The JSNMs@IIPs achieved maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity (158.5 mg g −1 at 318 K) while maintaining high selectivity (k = 16.8–61.3) against competing metal ions and excellent regenerability (93 % capacity retention over seven cycles). XPS analysis revealed coordination-based adsorption through Pb-N interaction formation within pre-organized imprinted cavities, while autonomous motion enhanced mass transfer through active convection. This work establishes motion-enhanced molecular recognition for advanced separation technologies, demonstrating that nanomotor propulsion can simultaneously improve kinetics and maintain selectivity in complex separation challenges.
