Liquid–Liquid Mass Transfer Enhancement in Milliscale Packed Beds

Chencan Du,Peicheng Wang,Yunpeng Hu,Jisong Zhang,Guangsheng Luo

The mass transfer of cyclohexanone oxime (CHO) from n-octane (continuous phase) to H2SO4 (dispersed phase) was enhanced in milliscale packed beds under large phase ratios. The holdups of two phases were determined, and the effects of structure and operating parameters on the overall mass transfer coefficient of the organic phase (K0a) were also investigated, including placement mode, surface property, size of particle and bed, flow rate and phase ratio, and CHO concentration. Different flow regimes were found in different placement modes and surface properties. Compared with tubes, packed beds showed 1 order of magnitude increase of K0a. A prediction model for K0a was proposed and showed good agreement with the experimental results. Pressure drop and energy dissipation were further measured to access the mixing efficiency. These results are therefore expected to contribute to the novel process of the caprolactam industry and expand the applications of microflow technology.

Hydrodynamics and mass transfer of Taylor bubbles flowing in non-Newtonian fluids in a microchannel

Qiankun Zhao,Haiyun Ma,Yanyan Liu,Chaoqun Yao,Lixia Yang,Guangwen Chen

The paper presents a study on the mass transfer of Taylor bubbles flowing in non-Newtonian fluids (slug flow) using an oxygen-sensitive colorimetric method, for the bubble formation and flow stages. The effects of fluid rheology on the operation range, bubble length and bubble shape are first presented, showing that they can be well described by the effective viscosity. The concentration distribution and k L a are also altered by the fluid rheology. Such effect highly depends on the flow rates, leading to distinct phenomena under small and high flow rates. Nevertheless, for all the fluid systems the mass transfer can be described by three parts, the transfer through the caps, through the lateral film and the film-slug exchange. A mass transfer model is proposed accordingly, which shows a larger contribution of the film (20%-60%) in shear-thinning fluids than that in the Newtonian fluid (10%-25%).

Salvinia-Inspired Architectures for Enhancing Interface Stability and Mass Transfer in Microchannels

Jinlong Xu,Yongjian Li,Haosheng Chen

Mass transfer in conventional microchannels primarily relies on wall-mediated diffusion or is compromised by dynamic instability at free interfaces, which limits interphase transport efficiency. Inspired by the hierarchical trichomes of Salvinia molesta leaves, we designed composite architectures featuring spatially selective hydrophilic modification via in situ polydopamine (PDA) grafting, which enhance mass transfer while maintaining interface stability in microchannels. High-speed imaging was used to capture the dynamic evolution of interfacial morphology, revealing failure behaviours consistent with theoretical analysis. Cyclic pressure loading experiments confirmed that the modified architecture exhibited strong interfacial pinning, increasing the stable operating pressure range by over 20% and doubling the tolerable disturbance frequency. By establishing mass transfer models, we demonstrated that this robust stability enabled efficient gas-liquid mass transfer and verified its potential for liquid-liquid extraction applications, especially under dynamic pulsatile flow conditions, where the mass transfer efficiency was improved by more than 15% compared to static conditions. This work presents an interfacial engineering strategy that combines structural design with surface wettability control, with broad potential in biological and chemical separation, gas–liquid reactions, and multiphase microfluidics.

Biomimetic hybrid porous microspheres with plant membrane-wall structure for evaluating multiscale mechanisms of ultrasound-assisted mass transfer

Jiaheng Li,Wenjun Wang,Weidong Xu,Songfeng Yu,Ruiling Lv,Jianwei Zhou,Donghong Liu

Determination of mass transfer during ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) has always been a challenge, not to mention the novel breakthrough of mechanisms for its positive effects. Herein, versatile porous microspheres (PM) with membrane-wall structure like plant tissues, which were made from sodium alginate/polyacrylamide dual crosslinking gels loaded with liposomes, were prepared to reveal the micro mass transfer effects during UAE. Results showed that prepared PM kept stable microstructure during extraction and ultrasound significantly accelerated the pore diffusion rather than surface diffusion. This effect resulted in higher UAE efficiency of PM with 60 % porosity than solid microspheres (143.72 to 155.47 mg/L), and the finding can be further explained as the accelerated internal diffusion (14.25 %) under ultrasound treatment. Moreover, multi-physics coupling simulations were performed to elucidate the enhanced pore flow and UAE efficiency. Acoustic streaming induced by cavitation effect increased the seepage velocity within the PM, and the pore structure would undergo compression and expansion deformation with alternated acoustic pressure due to its elastic characteristic. Both microscale effects improved the mass transfer and increase the UAE efficiency without structural damage from cavitation. This study fills the UAE mechanisms from micro view and provides a novel method for the study of vital micro processes.

Investigation of External Mass Transfer in a Micropacked Bed Reactor with a Pd/Al2O3/Nickel Foam

Lian Duan,Chi Ma,Fengyan Lou,Jiabin Yin,Le Sang,Jisong Zhang

External mass transfer performance of micropacked bed reactors (μPBRs) with Pd/Al2O3/nickel foam catalysts is investigated by the hydrogenation of α-methylstyrene (AMS). The external mass transfer limitation region for AMS hydrogenation can be determined by means of the apparent activation energy and internal effectiveness factor. Parametric studies for external mass transfer are conducted by varying temperatures, operating pressures, liquid viscosities, gas and liquid superficial velocities, and pore diameters of foam packing. The external volumetric mass transfer coefficients [(ka)OV] of μPBRs with the Pd/Al2O3/nickel foam range from 0.06 to 0.71 s–1. An empirical correlation of (ka)OV is developed. Based on the gas–liquid–solid process analysis, the external mass transfer of μPBRs with the Pd/Al2O3/nickel foam is limited by liquid–solid mass transfer under the experimental conditions. Moreover, μPBRs with the Pd/Al2O3/nickel foam exhibit the best energy efficiency in comparison with that of other multiphase reactors.

Three-dimensional-printed holistic reactors with fractal structure for heterogeneous reaction

Xueyan Sun,Zhigang Wang,Chong Li,Lijing Zhang,Wenbo Yang,Shengyang Tao

Holistic catalytic reactors with fractal structures have attracted growing attention in heterogeneous reactions because of their advantages of improved mass transfer and easy separation. Herein, a cost-efficient and straightforward design strategy that combined three-dimensional printing and electroless deposition was presented to construct dynamic, holistic stirred reactors with the fractal structure. The conversion factor α of the fractal impeller is 65.01 mmol m −2 h −1 with a large volume of reactant (80 ml), which is 1.7 times that of the normal impeller with the same loading of Ag catalysts. Experimental results and simulation analysis demonstrate that the fractal impeller significantly improves the catalytic performance by enhancing mass transfer and spatial dispersion in the reaction. Moreover, the holistic impeller could be reused 10 times without obvious loss of catalytic performance, and easily separated from the reaction system. The structural design of fractal reactors will open the way for high-efficiency dynamic heterogeneous catalytic reactors.

Experimental investigation on gas-liquid mass transfer with fast chemical reaction in microchannel

Chunying Zhu,Yutao Lu,Taotao Fu,Youguang Ma,Huai Z. Li

The gas-liquid two-phase flow and mass transfer with fast chemical reaction in a microchannel were investigated experimentally. Result showed that the bubble volume decreased exponentially with its movement along the channel in a quickly reactable absorbent. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient k L a increased with gas flow rate, while it was insensitive to liquid flow rate under experimental conditions, although the mass transfer coefficient k L increased with liquid flow rate. In slug-bubbly flow regime, the k L decreased when increasing gas flow rate, but inverse tendency was found for slug flow pattern. Both k L and k L a increased with the increase of absorbent concentration. A new correlation for predicting the volumetric mass transfer coefficients k L a was proposed by taking the enhancement factor E of chemical reaction into account.

Effect of hydrophilic properties of packings on mass transfer performance of water distillation

Zhiwei Zhang,Zhengliang Zhang,Xubin Zhang,Zheng Wang,Fumin Wang,Guobing Li,Xu Zhang,Xingtao Wang,Qingzhao Liu

Water distillation as an effective method for detritiation and deuterium enrichment can be used to improve mass transfer efficiency by treating the packing surface. This study focuses on the effect of the wettability of the packings surface on the separation performance of the H 2 O-HDO system. Different hydrophilic effect coatings are prepared on the surface of copper packings by alkaline etching and oxidation method. The differences in mass transfer performance of packings with different contact angles are investigated. It is found that with the increase of hydrophilicity, the mass transfer performance of the packing is relatively improved. By combining empirical models of mass transfer and experimental data, a mathematical model for predicting the height equivalent of theoretical plate ( HETP ) is established to quantify the effect of wetting properties on the mass transfer process.

Mixing behavior and mass transfer of liquid–liquid two-phase flow in an annular microchannel with helical wires

Min An,Chengxiang Wang,Qing Liu,Mengya Wang,Zhirong Yang,Wenpeng Li,Guoli Zhou,Jingtao Wang,Jinli Zhang

Combining the advantages of high efficiency, low-pressure drop, and large throughput, the pore array-enhanced tube-in-tube microchannel (PA-TMC) is a promising microreactor for industrial applications. However, most of the mass transfer takes place in the upstream pore region, while the contribution of the downstream annulus is limited. In this work, helical wires were introduced into the annulus by adhering to the outer surface of the inner tube. Mixing behavior and mass transfer of liquid–liquid two-phase flow in PA-TMC with different helical wires have been systematically studied by a combination of experiments and volume of fluid (VOF) method. The introduction of helical wires improves the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient K L a by up to 133% and the mass transfer efficiency E by up to 117%. The simulation results show that the helical wire brings extra phase mixing regions and increases the specific interface area, while accelerating the fluid flow and expanding the area of enhanced turbulent dissipation rate. Influences of helical wires in various configurations are compared by the comprehensive index I concerning the pressure drop and mass transfer performance simultaneously and a new correlation between K L a and specific energy consumption ϕ is proposed. This research deepens the understanding of the mixing behavior and mass transfer in the PA-TMCs and provides practical experience for the process intensification of microchannel reactors.

Effect of Fly Ash on the Mass Transfer Performance of CO2 Removal Using MEA and DEA Solutions in a Packed Tower

Wenxia Xie,Chunmin Tu,Jun Zhang,Chengwei Xu

The accumulation of uncollected fly ash from flue gas in post-combustion CO2capture processes is a significant concern in current coal-fired power plants due to its potential impact on the performance of CO2absorbent and absorption towers. In order to determine the effect of fly ash on the mass transfer performance of CO2absorption into monoethanolamine (MEA) and diethanolamine (DEA) aqueous solutions, experimental studies were carried out using a small-sized packed tower equipped with θ-ring random packing. These studies were conducted under various operating parameters, including solution temperature, liquid/gas ratio (L/G), packing height, and fly ash concentration. The results show that the effect of fly ash on the outlet CO2concentration was primarily observed during the initial stages of the experimental process. Moreover, the presence of fly ash leads to a reduction in the volumetric overall mass transfer coefficient (KGav) when using MEA and DEA solution, and increasing the fly ash concentration further exacerbates this negative impact. However, the effect of fly ash on the reduction inKGavis not significantly related to its chemical composition but rather depends on the operational parameters. With increasing solution temperature, liquid/gas ratio (L/G), and packing height, theKGavvalues for different solutions exhibit an upward trend. The negative effect of fly ash onKGavremains relatively stable for MEA as solution temperature and packing height increase. Compared to MEA, fly ash has a greater negative effect on DEA solution under the same experimental conditions. The analysis reveals that the detrimental effect of fly ash onKGavprimarily stems from its ability to alter the distribution state of the absorption liquid within the packed tower.

Enhancement of mass transfer performance by nanoparticles during the CO2 absorption with MDEA solution in a randomly packed tower

Jian Liu,Chengdong Kong,Liu Yang,Xiaojiang Wu,Zhongxiao Zhang

In this study, the mass transfer enhancement by nanoparticles during CO 2 absorption process with MDEA solution in a randomly packed tower was investigated. The mass transfer performance of MDEA solution with and without nanoparticles were quantified and analyzed in terms of the volumetric overall mass transfer coefficient ( K G a v ). An enhancement factor ( E ), defined as the ratio of K G a v with and without nanoparticles, was further introduced to evaluate the enhancement effect of the addition of nanoparticles. The effects of TiO 2 nanoparticle concentration, MDEA concentration, liquid flow rate, liquid temperature, inert gas flow rate, and CO 2 loading on K G a v and E were systematically studied in the packed tower. It is found that the maximum value of E can reach 1.37, when the nanoparticle concentration is 0.09 wt %, the liquid flow rate is 21.22 m 3 /m 2 ·h, the liquid temperature is 27°C, the MDEA concentration is 30%, the gas flow rate is 7.58 kmol/m 2 ·h and the CO 2 loading is 0.2 mol CO 2 /mol MDEA. Usually, the K G a v of the MDEA nanofluids can be increased by 10–37% in a randomly packed tower compared to that of the MDEA solution, which is consistent with the results from the bubbling reactors. However, when the CO 2 loading of absorption exceeds 50%, E becomes less than 1.0, which means that high CO 2 loading inhibits the enhancement effect of nanoparticles. In order to predict the mass transfer performance of MDEA nanofluid, a formula correlating E and various dimensionless operating parameters (i.e. L ̂ $\hat{L}$ , T ̂ $\hat{T}$ , C ̂ nf ${\hat{C}}_{{\rm{nf}}}$ and C ̂ MDEA ${\hat{C}}_{{\rm{MDEA}}}$ ) is proposed and fitted with an average absolute deviation of 14%. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Gas–Liquid Mass Transfer Characteristics of CO2 Absorption in Azole-Functionalized Ionic Liquid Anhydrous Solvents

Yitai Wang,Yinge Bai,Fukang Song,Shaojuan Zeng,Lulu Wang,Xiangping Zhang

Ionic liquids (ILs)-based solvent absorption is a promising green and low regenerative energy consumption technology for CO2 capture. Various functionalized ILs with highly efficient performance have been developed in academia, and the research focuses on thermodynamic properties such as CO2 solubility, gas–liquid equilibrium, and reaction heat. Kinetic studies of CO2 in ILs are also important to evaluate their potential for industrial applications, which need to be studied further. In this work, the mass transfer characteristics of three azole-based IL anhydrous solvents were studied in a wetted-wall column (WWC). At 313.15 K, the total mass transfer coefficient (KG) of fresh [HDBU][Im]/EG, [Cho][Im]/EG, and [Cho][Triz]/EG was 5.40, 2.32, and 0.80 mmol/(m2·s·kPa), respectively. The KG of the three solvents increased along with increase in the temperature. Conversely, when the CO2 loading in the solvent increased, KG decreased. At the initial stage of absorption, the mass transfer resistance of [HDBU][Im]/EG was mainly in the gas phase and then gradually changed to liquid phase. However, due to the excessive viscosity of [Cho][Im]/EG and [Cho][Triz]/EG, the mass transfer resistance was mainly concentrated in the liquid phase. The enhancement factor (E) of [HDBU][Im]/EG was higher than 159, indicating that it had good chemical reaction ability, thereby improving the mass transfer ability. The KG of [HDBU][Im]/EG is 92.12, 307.01, and 117.48% higher than MEA/H2O, MDEA/PZ/H2O, and MEA/AEEA/H2O at 313.15 K, respectively. This work showed that [HDBU][Im]/EG had a good mass transfer performance and great potential in future industrial applications. At the same time, the mass transfer law was summarized to provide theoretical support for CO2 capture technology and reactor design.
