Motion-unrestricted dynamic electrocardiogram system utilizing imperceptible electronics

Li Ding,Cui Tian-Rui,Liu Jia-Hao,Shao Wan-Cheng,Liu Xiao,Chen Zhi-Kang,Xu Zi-Gan,Li Xin,Xu Shuo-Yan,Xie Zi-Yi,Jian Jin-Ming,Wang Xu,Tao Lu-Qi,Wu Xiao-Ming,Cheng Zhong-Wei,Dong Zi-Rui,Liu Hou-Fang,Yang Yi,Zhou Jun,Ren Tian-Ling

Electrocardiogram (ECG) plays a vital role in the prevention, diagnosis, and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the lack of a user-friendly and accurate long-term dynamic electrocardiogram (DCG) device in motion has made it challenging to perform many daily cardiovascular risk screenings and assessments, such as sudden cardiac arrest, resulting in additional economic burdens on society. Here, we present a motion-unrestricted dynamic electrocardiogram (MU-DCG) system, which employs skin-conformal, imperceptible electronics for long-term, comfortable, and accurate 12-lead DCG monitoring. To facilitate assembly for use on the skin, the MU-DCG system features a pressure-activated flexible skin socket for stably soft-connecting the on-skin soft module and the off-skin stiff module during dynamic movements. Crucially, blinded cardiologist evaluations confirm minimal motion artifacts in MU-DCG-acquired ECG signals. Our results demonstrate that the MU-DCG system, with large-area, ultra-thin on-skin electrodes/leads, and an off-skin module, accomplishes anti-motion interference acquisition and in-situ analysis while retaining wearing imperceptibility.

Low-Contact Impedance Textile Electrode for Real-Time Detection of ECG Signals

Li Niu,Zhuoer Shen,Zemo Wang,Lingyun Qi,Haitao Niu,Hua Zhou,Cheng Zhang,Jun Xu,Jian Fang

The quality of the electrocardiography (ECG) signals depends on the effectiveness of the electrode–skin connection. However, current electrocardiogram electrodes (ECGE) often face challenges such as high contact impedance and unstable conductive networks, which hinder accurate measurement during movement and long-term wearability. Herein, in this work, a bionic 3D pile textile as an ECGE with high electrical conductivity and flexibility is prepared by a facile, continuous, and high-efficiency electrostatic self-assembly process. Integrating pile textiles with conductive materials creates a full textile electrode for bioelectrical signal detection that can retain both the inherent characteristics of textiles and high conductivity. Moreover, the dense piles on the textile surface make full contact with the skin, mitigating motion artifacts caused by the sliding between the textile and the skin. The continuous conductive network formed by the interconnected piles allows the pile textile ECGE (PT-ECGE) to function effectively under both static and dynamic conditions. Leveraging the unique pile structure, the PT-ECGE achieves superior flexibility, improved conductivity, low contact impedance, and high adaptivity, washability, and durability. The textile electrode, as a promising candidate for wearable devices, offers enormous application possibilities for the unconscious and comfortable detection of physiological signals.

Ultraconformal Skin-Interfaced Sensing Platform for Motion Artifact-Free Monitoring

Yuyan Gao,Bowen Li,Ling Zhang,Xianzhe Zhang,Xin Xin,Senpei Xie,Ryan Allen Lee,Kang Li,Weiwei Zhao,Huanyu Cheng

Capable of directly capturing various physiological signals from human skin, skin-interfaced bioelectronics has emerged as a promising option for human health monitoring. However, the accuracy and reliability of the measured signals can be greatly affected by body movements or skin deformations (e.g., stretching, wrinkling, and compression). This study presents an ultraconformal, motion artifact-free, and multifunctional skin bioelectronic sensing platform fabricated by a simple and user-friendly laser patterning approach for sensing high-quality human physiological data. The highly conductive membrane based on the room-temperature coalesced Ag/Cu@Cu core–shell nanoparticles in a mixed solution of polymers can partially dissolve and locally deform in the presence of water to form conformal contact with the skin. The resulting sensors to capture improved electrophysiological signals upon various skin deformations and other biophysical signals provide an effective means to monitor health conditions and create human-machine interfaces. The highly conductive and stretchable membrane can also be used as interconnects to connect commercial off-the-shelf chips to allow extended functionalities, and the proof-of-concept demonstration is highlighted in an integrated pulse oximeter. The easy-to-remove feature of the resulting device with water further allows the device to be applied on delicate skin, such as the infant and elderly.

On-Skin Paintable Water-Resistant Biohydrogel for Wearable Bioelectronics

Jiabei Luo,Chuanyue Sun,Boya Chang,Bin Zhang,Kerui Li,Yaogang Li,Qinghong Zhang,Hongzhi Wang,Chengyi Hou

To achieve accurate monitoring of bioelectrical signals, it is essential to use customizable bioelectrodes that can self-adapt to the skin's surface topography. Ion-conducting hydrogel has received significant attention in this field due to its softness, adhesion, and skin-like mechanical properties. However, these bioelectrodes currently suffer from degradation of adhesion, electrical conductivity, and skin-compliance when exposed to aqueous environments. This significantly limits the application of bioelectrodes. Herein, a customizable biohydrogel that can be applied on skin or fabric by solvent volatilization for liquid ink-gel film conversion is reported. The biohydrogel's distinct characteristic of transitioning between a liquid and hydrogel phase establishes superb conformal contact and dynamic compliance with the epidermis. This effectively eliminates motion artifacts and results in lower contact impedance and noise in both static and dynamic states when compared to existing bioelectrodes. The biohydrogel is applied to the cotton fabric to create electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring garments. These garments enable the acquisition of ECG signals with high accuracy in aqueous environment for over 72 h. Besides, the biohydrogel-based garments outperform the commercial gel electrodes by 83.5% in signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, the cotton/biohydrogel electrode facilitates multi-channel, high-fidelity recording of ECG signals, enabling high-performance capture and classification of ECG waveforms across multiple channels.

Anti-Motion Artifacts Iontronic Sensor for Long-Term Accurate Fingertip Pulse Monitoring

Jia You,Mingyang Lu,Lamu Dazhen,Mengjie Gao,Ruiyan Zhang,Wendong Li,Fan Lei,Wei Ren,Guangxian Li,Junlong Yang

Flexible pressure sensors have gained attention for their comfort, portability, and potential in long-term pulse monitoring and early cardiovascular disease diagnosis. However, stretching stress during daily activities affects sensor accuracy, causing motion artifacts (MAs) that hinder precise pulse signal detection. To address this challenge, the anti-motion artifact iontronic pressure sensor (S-smooth sensor), featuring a soft-hard stretchable interface with energy dissipation properties is developed. By regulating the local modulus of the encapsulation layer, this structure dissipates stretching stress, achieving an MAs suppression rate of up to 90%, significantly improving pulse signal accuracy and reliability. Additionally, the sensor incorporates a dielectric layer and double electrode layer (EDL) sensing interface, with a low-friction design that ensures high sensitivity (92.76 kPa−¹) and stability, maintaining performance over millions of cycles. The sensor accurately captures heart rate (HR) and pulse peak time differences (Δt) under various finger-bending conditions. When integrated into a portable wireless pulse monitoring system, it shows a heart rate loss rate of only 2.9% during intense physical activity. This approach avoids complex chemical processes and material restrictions, offering a novel solution for motion artifact suppression in sensors, with significant potential for real-time health monitoring and assisted diagnosis.

In Situ Forming Epidermal Bioelectronics for Daily Monitoring and Comprehensive Exercise

Hao Tang,Yuanfang Li,Baiqi Chen,Xing Chen,Yulong Han,Ming Guo,Hong-qi Xia,Rong Song,Xingcai Zhang,Jianhua Zhou

Conventional epidermal bioelectronics usually do not conform well with natural skin surfaces and are susceptible to motion artifact interference, due to incompatible dimensions, insufficient adhesion, imperfect compliance, and usually require complex manufacturing and high costs. We propose in situ forming hydrogel electrodes or electronics (ISF-HEs) that can establish highly conformal interfaces on curved biological surfaces without auxiliary adhesions. The ISF-HEs also have favorable flexibility and soft compliance comparable to human skin (≈0.02 kPa–1), which can stably maintain synchronous movements with deformed skins. Thus, the as-prepared ISF-HEs can accurately monitor large and tiny human motions with short response time (≈180 ms), good biocompatibility, and excellent performance. The as-obtained nongapped hydrogel electrode-skin interfaces achieve ultralow interfacial impedance (≈50 KΩ), nearly an order of magnitude lower than commercial Ag|AgCl electrodes as well as other reported dry and wet electrodes, regardless of the intrinsic micro-obstacles (wrinkles, hair) and skin deformation interference. Therefore, the ISF-HEs can collect high-quality electrocardiography and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals, with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR ≈ 32.04 dB), reduced signal crosstalk, and minimized motion artifact interference. Simultaneously monitoring human motions and sEMG signals have also been implemented for the general exercise status assessment, such as the shooting competition in the Olympics. The as-prepared ISF-HEs can be considered as supplements/substitutes of conventional electrodes in percutaneously noninvasive monitoring of multifunctional physiological signals for health and exercise status.

Enhancing photoacoustic imaging for lung diagnostics and BCI communication: simulation of cavity structures artifact generation and evaluation of noise reduction techniques

Chai Chengpeng,Yang Xi,Gao Xurong,Shi Junhui,Wang Xiaojun,Song Hongfei,Chen Yun-Hsuan,Sawan Mohamad

Pandemics like COVID-19 have highlighted the potential of Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) for Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) communication and lung diagnostics. However, PAI struggles with the clear imaging of blood vessels in areas like the lungs and brain due to their cavity structures. This paper presents a simulation model to analyze the generation and propagation mechanism within phantom tissues of PAI artifacts, focusing on the evaluation of both Anisotropic diffusion filtering (ADF) and Non-local mean (NLM) filtering, which significantly reduce noise and eliminate artifacts and signify a pivotal point for selecting artifact-removal algorithms under varying conditions of light distribution. Experimental validation demonstrated the efficacy of our technique, elucidating the effect of light source uniformity on artifact-removal performance. The NLM filtering simulation and ADF experimental validation increased the peak signal-to-noise ratio by 11.33% and 18.1%, respectively. The proposed technique adds a promising dimension for BCI and is an accurate imaging solution for diagnosing lung diseases.

A 2.7-μm-thick robust, permeable, and antifreezing hydrogel electrode for long-term ambulatory health monitoring

Yuli Wang,Zonglei Wang,Yujie Zhang,Jiawei Yang,Zongman Zhang,Pengcheng Zhou,Yumiao Xu,Qingyuan Sun,Meiqiong Zheng,Wenqing Yan,Xuezhong He,Jiongyu Chen,Juan Li,Youhua Jiang,Sunghoon Lee,Hossam Haick,Tomoyuki Yokota,Takao Someya,Yan Wang

Adaptable hydrogel bioelectronics that sustain long-term, uninterrupted operation are critical for early disease diagnosis and personalized health care. However, conventional hydrogel electrodes suffer from mechanical fragility, rapid dehydration, freezing, and poor comfort because of thickness-induced interfacial gaps. We report a 2.7-micrometer-thick robust, permeable, and antifreezing hydrogel electrode for high-quality 8-day electrophysiological monitoring under everyday scenarios. The ultrathin electrode is fabricated using gelatin hydrogels with temperature-controlled phase change properties reinforced by nanomesh while incorporating lithium chloride, and a binary solvent achieves antifreezing and antidehydration characteristics. The design minimizes flexural rigidity, resulting in high interfacial adhesion energy with human skin, and enhances gas (air, oxygen, and carbon dioxide) permeance and water vapor transmission rate. Consequently, the ultrathin hydrogel electrode exhibits high biocompatibility, superior wear comfort, and minimized motion and sweat artifacts, enabling reliable, uninterrupted, wireless health monitoring over eight consecutive days across various real-life activities and adaptation to cold environments.

An Integrated Neural Optrode with Modification of Polymer-Carbon Composite Films for Suppression of the Photoelectric Artifacts

Yanyan Xu,Xien Yang,Zhiwen Liang,Lizhang Lin,Wenbo Zhao,Liyang Wang,Yu Xia,Xudong Lin,Mang I. Vai,Sio Hang Pun,Baijun Zhang

Optogenetics-based integrated photoelectrodes with high spatiotemporal resolution play an important role in studying complex neural activities. However, the photostimulation artifacts caused by the high level of integration and the high impedance of metal recording electrodes still hinder the application of photoelectrodes for optogenetic studies of neural circuits. In this study, a neural optrode fabricated on sapphire GaN material was proposed, and 4 μLEDs and 14 recording microelectrodes were monolithically integrated on a shank. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/polystyrenesulfonate and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PEDOT:PSS-MWCNT) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and graphene oxide (PEDOT-GO) composite films were deposited on the surface of the recording microelectrode by electrochemical deposition. The results demonstrate that compared with the gold microelectrode, the impedances of both composite films reduced by more than 98%, and the noise amplitudes decreased by 70.73 and 87.15%, respectively, when exposed to light stimulation. Adjusting the high and low levels, we further reduced the noise amplitude by 48.3%. These results indicate that modifying the electrode surface by a polymer composite film can effectively enhance the performance of the microelectrode and further promote the application of the optrode in the field of neuroscience.

Protocol for fiber photometry recording from deep brain regions in head-fixed mice

Siyao Zhou,Shumin Duan,Hongbin Yang

Summary To exclude the influence of motion on in vivo calcium imaging, animals usually need to be fixed. However, the whole-body restraint can cause stress in animals, affecting experimental results. In addition, some brain regions are prone to bleeding during surgery, which lowers the success rate of calcium imaging. Here, we present a protocol for calcium imaging using heparin-treated fiber in head-fixed mice. We describe steps for stereotaxic surgery, including virus injection and optic fiber implantation, fiber photometry, and data analysis. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Du et al. 1

Eutectogel Skin Electrodes with Superior Adhesion, Sweat Resistance, and Long-Term Stability for Electrophysiological Signal Monitoring

Tao Liu,Zhenzhen Nong,Yong Li,Zhuohang Liu,Zhuoyue Fan,Huansheng Liu,Qi Liu,Jianyu Qiu,Qingwen Wang,Zhenzhen Liu

Acquiring high-quality and long-term electrophysiological signals remains a critical challenge in human health monitoring. However, traditional commercial gel or paste skin electrodes are extremely susceptible to sweat, body motion, or environmental interference, seriously limiting the high-fidelity of outputted signals. Herein, a completely physical crosslinked eutectogel is prepared at room temperature, which displays low modulus yet high toughness because of the multiple hydrogen bonding interactions of konjac glucomannan (KGM) with other components of the gel network. This eutectogel not only exhibits superior adhesion to normal skin but also shows enhanced adhesion under sweating conditions, enabling seamless and ultraconformal skin contact. Furthermore, the eutectogel possesses excellent environmental stability, biocompatibility, and low interfacial contact impedance. Based on these merits, this eutectogel is used as a skin electrode for real-time monitoring of electrophysiological signals with extraordinary immunity to motion artifacts, sweat disturbance, and environmental interference, thereby providing a robust solution for the acquisition of electrophysiological signals. Graphical A physically crosslinked ALK eutectogel with superior adhesion to normal/sweaty skin, excellent low impedance persistence, remarkable environmental stability, and ultra-conformability with skin is developed for use as skin electrodes for real-time monitoring of electrophysiological signals, which exhibits extraordinary immunity to motion artifacts, sweat disturbance, and environmental interference, thus providing a robust solution for the acquisition of electrophysiological signals.

Ultra-conformal skin electrodes with synergistically enhanced conductivity for long-time and low-motion artifact epidermal electrophysiology

Zhao Yan,Zhang Song,Yu Tianhao,Zhang Yan,Ye Guo,Cui Han,He Chengzhi,Jiang Wenchao,Zhai Yu,Lu Chunming,Gu Xiaodan,Liu Nan

Accurate and imperceptible monitoring of electrophysiological signals is of primary importance for wearable healthcare. Stiff and bulky pregelled electrodes are now commonly used in clinical diagnosis, causing severe discomfort to users for long-time using as well as artifact signals in motion. Here, we report a ~100 nm ultra-thin dry epidermal electrode that is able to conformably adhere to skin and accurately measure electrophysiological signals. It showed low sheet resistance (~24 Ω/sq, 4142 S/cm), high transparency, and mechano-electrical stability. The enhanced optoelectronic performance was due to the synergistic effect between graphene and poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), which induced a high degree of molecular ordering on PEDOT and charge transfer on graphene by strong π-π interaction. Together with ultra-thin nature, this dry epidermal electrode is able to accurately monitor electrophysiological signals such as facial skin and brain activity with low-motion artifact, enabling human-machine interfacing and long-time mental/physical health monitoring.
