With the development of industry and modern manufacturing, nondegradable low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has been widely used, posing a rising environmental hazard to natural ecosystems and public health. In this study, we isolated a series of LDPE-degrading fungi from landfill sites and carried out LDPE degradation experiments by combining highly efficient degrading fungi in pairs. The results showed that the mixed microorganisms composed of Alternaria sp. CPEF-1 and Trametes sp. PE2F-4 (H-3 group) had a greater degradation effect on heat-treated LDPE (T-LDPE). After 30 days of inoculation with combination strain H-3, the weight loss rate of the T-LDPE film was approximately 154% higher than that of the untreated LDPE (U-LDPE) film, and the weight loss rate reached 0.66 ± 0.06%. Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to further investigate the biodegradation impacts of T-LDPE, including the changes on the surface and depolymerization of the LDPE films during the fungal degradation process. Our findings revealed that the combined fungal treatment is more effective at degrading T-LDPE than the single strain treatment, and it is expected that properly altering the composition of the microbial community can help lessen the detrimental impact of plastics on the environment.

Peanut shells, a major economic and oil crop in China, boast an abundant availability and remarkably high lignin content compared to other agricultural residues. Previous work indicated that the modified hierarchical zeolite (Zn-ZSM-5/MCM41) was effective in promoting the conversion of intermediate macromolecules during the lignin pyrolysis reaction and enhancing the yield and selectivity of liquid products. Thereby, this study aims to improve the quality of liquid products in the ex situ catalytic microwave co-pyrolysis of peanut shells and LDPE by utilizing Zn-ZSM-5/MCM41. Employing a compound center experimental design, we optimized reaction conditions through response surface analysis. The impact of microwave pyrolysis temperature and the catalyst-to-feedstock ratio on yield distribution and liquid product selectivity was explored. Results indicated a marginal increase in liquid product yield with rising pyrolysis temperatures. Moreover, an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease in liquid product yield was observed with an increase in the catalyst-to-feedstock ratio. Optimal conditions of 450 °C and a catalyst-to-peanut hull ratio of 2.34% yielded the highest bio-oil yield at 34.25%. GC/MS analysis of the bio-oil revealed a peak in hydrocarbon content at 68.36% under conditions of 450 °C and a catalyst-to-feedstock ratio of 13.66%. Additionally, the quadratic model effectively predicted bio-oil yield and the selectivity for major chemical components. This study underscores the potential of Zn-ZSM-5/MCM41 in optimizing liquid product quality during catalytic co-pyrolysis, offering insights into bio-oil production and its chemical composition.Keywords:bio-oil;pyrolysis;catalyst;LDPE;biomass

Iron (Fe) plaques in coastal wetlands are widely recognized because of their strong adsorption affinity for natural particles, but their interaction behaviors and mechanisms with plastics remain unknown. Through laboratory incubation experiments, paired with multiple characterization methods and microbial analysis, this work focused on the characteristics of Fe plaques on low-density polyethylene plastic surfaces and their relationship with environmental factors in coastal wetlands (Mangrove and Spartina alterniflora soil). The results showed that iron plaques increased the adhesive force of the plastic surface from 65.25 to 300 nN and promoted the oxidation of the plastic surface. Fe plaque formation was stimulated by salinity , anaerobic conditions , natural organic matter, and a weak alkaline scenario (pH 8.0–8.3). The Fe content showed a stable positive correlation with heavy metals loading (i.e., As, Mn, Co, Cr, Pb, and Zn). Furthermore, we revealed that Fe plaque was positively regulated by Nitrospirae through 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis. Meanwhile, Verrucomicrobia and Kiritimatiellaeota . may act as depressants by consuming salt. This work illustrated that iron plaques could enhance the role of plastics in contaminant migration by altering their adsorption performance, providing new insights into plastic interface behavior and potential ecological effects in coastal wetlands.

Co-pyrolysis of sludge and waste plastics is a long-term strategic approach for producing valuable fuels. However, sludge is characterized by a high protein content, which serves as a significant source of nitrogenous components in bio-oil. To improve the quality of pyrolysis products, the present study investigated the effect of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) on nitrogen transformation during the pyrolysis of sludge protein (SP). The study findings indicated that LDPE addition reduced the amount of solid residue owing to the interaction between SP and H radicals generated by LDPE pyrolysis. The thermal weight loss difference consistently remained below 0 when the SP-to-LDPE mixing ratio was 7:3, indicating that LDPE promotes the pyrolysis of SP. For the analysis of nitrogen-containing products during pyrolysis, LDPE addition significantly reduced the levels of nitrogen-containing compounds in the bio-oils of glutamate (Glu), histidine (His), and tyrosine (Tyr). Specifically, at 600°C, Glu, His, and Tyr in the bio-oils decreased by 31.4%, 33.3%, and 34.38%, respectively. No significant changes were observed in the nitrogen content within the pyrolysis char of Glu and His. However, all three amino acids exhibited a significant increase in the formation of NO x precursors due to the attack on the nitrogen positions of the heterocyclic nitrogen species by the H radicals generated by LDPE. This study contributes to research on the impact of LDPE on nitrogen migration and conversion during the pyrolysis of SP, laying the foundation for subsequent studies on pollutant removal reactions.

A novel thermal catalyst in response to heat excitation was first synthesized and then added into low density polyethylene (LDPE) matrix to prepare corresponding films. The thermocatalytic degradation of LDPE/thermal catalyst (LEPDET) film was investigated under artificial ageing conditions. The changes in the films were evaluated by measuring the surface morphology, average molecular weight, crystallization capacity, chemical group, contact angle, and mechanical property. The results obtained show that the surface of as-prepared film was seriously destroyed because of the thermocatalytic reactions at 40 °C in darkness. A rapid decreasing tendency of the average molecular weight was clearly monitored, simultaneously, the crystallization capacity decreased significantly. The presence of carbonyl groups was observed during degradation process, and the above-mentioned groups were also detected mediately in contact angle view. Additionally, on the basis of the above-mentioned evidences, a possible mechanism for the thermoctalytic degradation was also established in detail. Thus, the effectiveness of thermocatalytic route has been successfully demonstrated by heat excitation at near room-temperature. It is hoped that our study may develop an alternative method for the disposal of polymeric film in the future.

A novel metal chelate complex containing phosphorus, nitrogen and zinc (II) ion was synthesized and used as the flame retardant of low density polyethylene (LDPE). The zinc chelate complex was synthesized by reacting zinc acetate with the ligand of tetraethyl (1,2-phenylenebis(azanediyl)) bis (2-hydroxylphenylmethylene) diphosphonate (TEPAPM). The chemical structure of the target Zn-TEPAPM was confirmed by FTIR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and 31 P NMR spectra. The flame retardancy and thermal behavior of LDPE containing various amount of Zn-TEPAPM were investigated by limiting oxygen index test, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and cone calorimetry . The results show that Zn-TEPAPM can greatly increase the thermal stability, the char formation and smoke suppression ability of LDPE. The TG curves show that even when the filler content of Zn-TEPAPM is as low as 1 wt% in LDPE, the onset degradation temperature of LDPE is increased from 429 °C to 442 °C, and the maximum degradation temperature is increased from 469 °C to 488 °C. Also, a reduction of 32% for the peak heat release rate (PHRR) is obtained in the cone test. Moreover, Zn-TEPAPM is demonstrated to be a very effective synergist of ammonium polyphosphate (APP). When 1 wt% of Zn-TEPAPM was introduced into the LDPE/APP (mass ratio 80/19) blend, the PHRR value is reduced by 32%, compared with that of LDPE/APP blend without Zn-TEPAPM, and the char layer becomes more compact and intact.

The present study aims to improve the yields and selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons in the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass by the addition of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which has a higher hydrogen-carbon ratio than biomass. We have investigated the thermal decomposition behavior and kinetics, as well as the product distribution, of the co-pyrolysis of biomass (cellulose and pine sawdust) and plastic (LDPE) both with and without a catalyst (HZSM-5) using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Our results, based on the weight loss difference (△ W ), show that there is a positive and synergistic interaction between the biomass and LDPE. After the addition of LDPE, the synergistic reactions inhibited catalyst coking effectively and decreased the formation of solid residues. In addition, the ZSM-5 catalyst improved the reaction activity and reduced the activation energy, although the reaction mechanism is not changed. At the same time, the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method was used to fit the kinetic data for both non-catalytic and catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass and LDPE, and the activation energies ( E a ) of the cellulose + LDPE + catalyst and pine + LDPE + catalyst systems were found to be 168.81 and 185.87 kJ/mol, respectively. The co-pyrolysis of biomass and LDPE effectively improved the yield and selectivity of aromatics and increased the selectivity for benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene (BTXE). The addition of LDPE can effectively improve the selectivity for naphthalene family products (methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene) in the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass and decrease the content of aromatic hydrocarbons larger than C10.

Background Catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass with waste plastics can produce high-quality chemicals, making it a potential alternative to fossil fuels. The production of aromatic-rich oil was achieved in this work by the catalytic co-pyrolysis of pine sawdust and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) using a series of biochar (BC) made using different preparation methods. Zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) was employed to activate the BC during the preparation process, owing to its optimal activity for the co-pyrolysis intermediates. The study compared the effects of BCs activated using different treatment methods on the yield and fractions of pine sawdust and LDPE co-pyrolysis in a fast pyrolysis tube furnace at 650 °C. Results The study indicates that the ZnCl 2 BC, prepared from pine sawdust by fast pyrolysis (F-AC), exhibited the best aromatic catalytic activity. The selectivity to aromatic hydrocarbons was 72.53%, and the content of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) was 32.17%. Conclusion The Diels–Alder reaction and aromatization were made more effective due to the Zn sites and large pore structure in F-AC. Using Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, it was found that F-AC contained more oxygen (O)-containing groups in abundance, which improved its adsorption capacity for reaction intermediates. At the same time, the porous structure and high SSA of BC provided a region for the reaction intermediate to interact with the active center containing O-containing groups. This enhanced the synergy between biomass and plastics and raised the selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons. It provides a reference for the application of carbon-based materials in the co-pyrolysis of biomass and waste plastics. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is an excellent insulating material that ensures the safe and reliable operation of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables. The insulation properties of LDPE can be improved by doping with voltage stabilizers. Due to its electron-withdrawing property, [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) has the potential to be used as a voltage stabilizer to improve the DC insulation performance of LDPE, especially the high temperature insulation performance of cable insulation. Therefore, the impact of PCBM on carrier trap characteristics and micro charge transport at high temperatures and high fields requires further study. LDPE is used as the matrix material to prepare composites with concentrations of 0.5 and 1 wt%. The experimental results show that the Weibull characteristic breakdown strength can be increased by 10.5 % and the DC electrical conductivity can be reduced by 73.6 % at 90 °C, when the PCBM doping concentration is 0.5 wt%. These results can be explained by trap characteristics and molecular chain displacement. It reveals that the introduction of PCBM can effectively increase the trap density, which can capture more charge carriers, resulting in a decrease in carrier mobility and electrical conductivity. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that owing to the high electron affinity and low ionization potential of PCBM, it is more prone to attracting and capturing electrons, thereby efficiently absorbing high-energy electron energy. Moreover, PCBM makes the amorphous region more tightly ordered, which manifests as an improvement in crystallinity. It also enhances the friction coefficient of the molecular chain and suppresses the molecular chain displacement in LDPE, which is verified by charge transport and molecular displacement modulated model simulations. This study provides a new method for improving the properties of cable insulation materials.

This paper reports on the anti-thermal aging ability enhanced by nanoparticles for polyethylene based nanocomposites. Nanocomposites with concentration of 1 wt% were prepared by using silicon dioxide (SiO
2
), zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles. Fourier-transform infrared spectra showed that the low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/MgO nanocomposites had the best anti-thermal aging ability in comparison with the LDPE/SiO
2
nanocomposites, which had the worst anti-thermal aging ability. Subsequently the ability of nanocomposites to ensure the electrical properties was examined by dielectric properties and space charge distribution. The results show that LDPE/MgO and LDPE/ZnO nanocomposites retained the value and the relaxation peaks of permittivity to a certain extent after thermal aging. All of the nanocomposites presented the ability for suppression of space charge accumulation after thermal aging compared with neat LDPE with the observation of obvious homocharges accumulated near electrodes. We find that the interface between nanoparticles and matrix may be the reason for the anti-thermal aging ability exhibited by the nanocomposites.

Larvae of Zophobas atratus (synonym as Z. morio , or Z. rugipes Kirsch, Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) are capable of eating foams of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE), similar to larvae of Tenebrio molitor . We evaluated biodegradation of EPS and LDPE in the larvae from Guangzhou, China (strain G) and Marion, Illinois, U.S. (strain M) at 25 °C. Within 33 days, strain G larvae ingested respective LDPE and PS foams as their sole diet with respective consumption rates of 58.7 ± 1.8 mg and 61.5 ± 1.6 mg 100 larvae −1 d −1 . Meanwhile, strain M required co-diet (bran or cabbage) with respective consumption rates of 57.1 ± 2.5 mg and 30.3 ± 7.7 mg 100 larvae −1 d −1 . Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and thermal gravimetric analyses indicated oxidation and biodegradation of LDPE and EPS in the two strains. Gel permeation chromatography analysis revealed that strain G performed broad depolymerization of EPS, i.e., both weight-average molecular weight (M w ) and number-average molecular weight (M n ) of residual polymers decreased, while strain M performed limited extent depolymerization, i.e., M w and M n increased. However, both strains performed limited extent depolymerization of LDPE. After feeding antibiotic gentamicin, gut microbes were suppressed, and M w and M n of residual LDPE and EPS in frass were basically unchanged, implying a dependence on gut microbes for depolymerization/biodegradation. Our discoveries indicate that gut microbe-dependent LDPE and EPS biodegradation is present within Z. atratus in Tenebrionidae, but that the limited extent depolymerization pattern resulted in undigested polymers with high molecular weights in egested frass.

Surface modification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with long polymer chains has attracted great attention since it promises high performance nanomaterials. However, due to the chemical inertness of both polyethylene (PE) and CNT, it still remains a challenge to covalently conjugate CNT with PE in a facile manner. In this report, trimethoxysilane terminated PE (TMS-PE) and trimethoxysilane modified multiwall carbon nanotube (TMS-MWNT) is prepared through radical mediated thiol-ene addition reaction between (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane and vinyl terminated PE or pristine carbon nanotube, respectively. Subsequently, organotin-catalyzed hydrolytic co-condensation of TMS-PE and TMS-MWNT lead to PE covalently grafted mutliwall CNT (PE-Si-MWNT) with high graft ratio (17.5 wt%). Such reactions are robust and efficient and the reaction conditions are mild. In addition, the authors provide the very first evidence that end-grafted PE chains in PE-Si-MWNT, which are clearly observed in TEM images, can render high compatibility and good interfacial interactions between CNT and low density PE (LDPE) matrix and thus promote homogeneous dispersion of CNT into LDPE matrix as shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization of brittle fracture surfaces of LDPE/PE-Si-MWNT nanocomposites.
