Preparation and performance evaluation of a low-damage fracturing fluid for unconventional reservoirs

Xueping Zhang,Youquan Liu,Pengfei Zhang,Keyu Pan,Qi Chen,Rui Jiang

The characteristics of tight matrix, underdeveloped natural fractures, small pore throat radius, poor pore connectivity, and abundant clay minerals result in a high potential for damage to the tight sandstone reservoirs of the Shaximiao Formation in the Qiulin Block in the Sichuan Basin. In order to reduce the retention damage caused by fracturing fluid to the tight sandstone reservoir, a low damage fracturing fluid system applicable to the target reservoir is developed in this work, and the indoor performance meets the requirements of on-site fracturing operation. A low-damage, heat-resistant, shear-stable amphiphilic polyacrylamide (PAAD) was prepared by free radical polymerization in aqueous solution using acrylamide, acrylic acid, and methacryloyloyloxyethyl dimethyloctadecyl ammonium bromide (DM18) as the monomers. The amphoteric polyacrylamide was characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR), light scattering molecular weight determination, and thermogravimetric analysis. Fracturing fluids were formulated with the amphiphilic hydrophobic associative polymer PAAD as a drag-reducing agent, the fluorine-containing and nonionic complex surfactant FD1 as a clean-up additive, CT10-4B as a bactericide and CT1-12 as an emulsion breaker. The fracturing fluid formulation was preferred, and the performance of the fracturing fluid was evaluated in terms of temperature resistance and shear resistance, drag reduction, anti-expansion, and core damage. The fracturing fluid showed good temperature and shear resistance, with a viscosity retention of 58.4% at 120°C and 170 s −1 shear for 1 h. At a loading of 0.1%, the drag reduction rate reaches 72.3%, the anti-expansion rate of the gel-breaking fluid is 86.04%, and the damage rate to the tight sandstone core is 16.25%. The results show that the fracturing fluid has good heat resistance and shear stability, as well as low damage and good resistance reduction and anti-expansion properties. This work can provide new strategies for designing polymeric fracturing fluids with low damage, good heat resistance and shear stability.

Study of a low-damage efficient-imbibition fracturing fluid without flowback used for low-pressure tight reservoirs

Feifei Huang,Chunsheng Pu,Xiaoyu Gu,Zhengqin Ye,Nasir Khan,Jie An,Feipeng Wu,Jing Liu

The oil production from the low-pressure tight reservoirs in China decreases sharply after fracturing under natural depletion. To supply the formation energy and displace oil through imbibition instead of flowback, a novel nanoparticle-enhanced supramolecular fracturing fluid (NESF) was developed. It consisted of 0.10 wt% hydrophobically modified hydroxypropyl guar (HMHPG), 1.00 wt% synthesized hydrophilic gemini surfactant (HGS), and 0.05 wt% hydrophobically fumed nanosilica (HNS). A series of experiments were conducted to characterize the molecular structure of HGS and evaluate the heat/shear resistance, rheological property, proppant suspension and transportation, formation damage, and imbibition efficiency of NESF. Finally, the oilfield practical application of NESF fracturing without flowback was carried out. The results showed that the heat resistance and the interfacial property of NESF were improved by HNS and HGS respectively. Besides the favorable common properties, a low oil permeability loss rate of 9.40%, a high fracture conductivity retainment rate of 95.11%, and a high imbibition recovery factor of 19.43% were realized by NESF. The accumulative oil production of the well stimulated by NESF without flowback was increased by 13.55% and the decline rate of oil production was reduced from 14.70% to 5.22% in the first 6 months.

Investigation on Electrical Enhanced Photocatalysis Polishing of Single-Crystal Silicon Carbide Substrates

Gao Xingjun,Li Xiang,He Yan,Fan Lin,Tang Meiling

In order to solve the problems of low efficiency, pollution and large damage of existing polishing methods, the electrical enhanced photocatalysis polishing method for single-crystal silicon carbide was proposed in this paper. The recombination of electrons and holes was inhibited by the combined action of applied electric field and chemical trapping agent, so the efficiency of oxidation was improved, and the polishing of silicon carbide with high efficiency and low damage can be achieved. The effects of various parameters such as polishing pressure, polishing speed, polishing pad, abrasive particles and oxygenation of slurry on polishing effect were studied. 0.025 MPa of polishing pressure, 60 r/min of polishing speed, 5 wt% of SiO 2 abrasive particles and synthetic fiber polymer polishing pad can provide the higher MRR of 1.18 μm/h and the best surface quality (Ra = 0.348 nm). In addition, it has been proven that UV, optimized pH, types of photocatalysts, electron trapping agent and voltage are necessary factors for the slurry to exhibit strong oxidizing properties. The MRR is mainly determined by both mechanical action (introduced by abrasive particles) and chemical action (introduced by slurry). The above technology can basically meet the requirements of high-efficiency, ultra-smooth and low damage polishing of single-crystal silicon carbide.
