In situ swelling of low-friction, high load-bearing self-bending bilayer hydrogels inspired by articular cartilage

Jianfeng Chen,Chuan Li,Xiaoxiao Chen,Kui Zhou,Hanjing Li,Kai Peng,Yang Yinong,Yichuan Dai,Ben Huang

The articular cartilage is characterized by its gradient hierarchical structure, which exhibits excellent lubrication and robust load-bearing properties. However, its inherent difficulty in self-repair after damage presents numerous formidable challenges for cartilage repair. Inspired by the unique structure of articular cartilage, a biomimetic bilayer hydrogel composed of PAM (polyacrylamide) and PAM/SA (sodium alginate) is prepared using a two-step in-situ swelling method. The bilayer hydrogel demonstrates exceptional structural stability due to the interlayer in-situ chemical cross-linking. Compared to monolayer hydrogels, the PAM-PAM/SA bilayer hydrogel demonstrates superior mechanical attributes, exhibiting a compressive strength of 1 MPa and a compressive modulus of 0.22 MPa. Furthermore, exploration of the tribological performance of the PAM-PAM/SA bilayer hydrogel have revealed its low-friction performance under high loads, with a coefficient of friction as low as 0.032. Finally, leveraging the differential swelling properties between the distinct layers of the PAM-PAM/SA bilayer hydrogel, a self-bending biomimetic cartilage capable of conforming to complex joint surfaces is fabricated. This highly lubricating, mechanically robust, and conformal biomimetic cartilage provides an effective means for addressing cartilage defects and joint diseases.

PVA/silica/mucin hydrogel with high toughness and low friction

Xiansheng Tan,Wenting Deng,Shuhuan Feng,Tengfei Xu,Yuxin Wang,Jianhao Zhao,Jianhua Rong

For hydrogel applied in joint cartilage replacement, achieving both high toughness and low friction performance is a significant challenge. This study modifies polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel by using wet annealing and immersion methods. Wet annealing allows conformational rearrangement to improve crystallinity while maintaining the overall structure of the hydrogel. The immersion method induces the formation of tiny silica dioxide particles within the hydrogel. The mechanical properties of the hydrogel are greatly enhanced through the synergistic effect of these two mechanisms. Additionally, the introduction of mucin into the hydrogel achieves ultra-low lubrication performance through the brush-like oligosaccharide side chains and the negative charge saliva residues of mucin. The prepared hydrogel material not only exhibits excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength 5.11 MPa, tensile modulus 4.56 MPa, compressive strength 27.56 MPa, compressive modulus 2.04 MPa), but also maintains continuous lubrication and a low friction coefficient (0.037) under high loads (5 N) and high speeds (20 mm/s). The hydrogel maintains volume stability in a simulated body fluid environment for an extended period after swelling equilibrium. This method for preparing ultra-tough and lubricating hydrogels can offer valuable insights for researchers in the field.

Facile preparation and characterization of tough poly(vinyl alcohol) organohydrogels with low friction and self-cleaning properties

Jia Yang,Jiajia Hao,Chen Tang,Yaxin Guo,Mingxin Guo,Zhipeng Li,Shuzheng Liu,Hui Yu,Gang Qin,Qiang Chen

Although many hydrogels have been applied to wearable sensors, it is still challenging to simultaneously realize hydrogels with optical transparency, superior mechanical properties, excellent sensing performance, and anti-freezing by using inexpensive raw materials and an easy preparation process. Herein, using ethylene glycol/H 2 O (EG/ H 2 O) as a solvent, poly(vinyl alcohol)/EG organohydrogel (PVA/EG OHG) was prepared by a simple heating and frozen-thawing method. Owing to the multifunctionality of EG (i.e., physical cross-linker, anti-freezer and co-solvent), PVA/EG OHG demonstrated excellent integrated properties, including high strength, high toughness, and anti-freezing performances. Besides, PVA/EG OHG also showed low friction, self-cleaning, and frost resistance properties. After the introduction of LiCl, ionically conductive PVA/EG @LiCl organohydrogel was served as a self-cleaning strain sensor, which could be long-term stable to detect the motions of human under room and low temperatures. The study provides to further understanding of the organohydrogel, which will help us design next-generation high-performance organohydrogels.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride: Achieving Superlow Friction and Wear on Engineering Steel

Lin Li,Tao Lin,Jie Sun,Hanjun Gong,Yun Bai,Kai Gao

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a typical two-dimensional (2D) material acclaimed for its layered structure and electronic properties, showcasing promise across various domains such as catalysis, CO2 reduction, and lubrication. In this study, g-C3N4 is synthesized as an oil-based nanoadditive within oleic acid (OA), exhibiting superlow friction coefficient (COF) within steel/steel contacts under high pressure. When dispersed g-C3N4 in OA at a concentration of 0.25 wt %, the COF is reduced from 0.077 to 0.022 compared to the base oil. The amino groups in g-C3N4 promote the formation of continuous friction films, creating a composite tribofilm made of carbon layers, carbon nitride, and iron oxides. This tribofilm effectively prevents direct contact between tribopairs, leading to significant friction reduction and enhanced antiwear properties. These findings offer insights into the design of lubricant additives for base oils and highlight the promising potential of carbon nitride in lubrication and tribology applications.

Quick ultra-low friction in ceramics induced by high-strength nano surface film

Jinlu Li,Tianyi Sui,Haolin Li,Feifei Zhao,Xuan Bao,Guochen Ning,Yuan Zhang,Jingtao Wang,Bin Lin

Serious wear during running-in period significantly limited the application of ceramics in industry. With poor activity, ceramic contact surface is hard to be protected during friction. In this study, ceramics tribological properties are significantly enhanced and ultra-low friction is achieved in short time by formation of high-strength nano surface film. Copper nanoparticles with linear and cubic morphologies were synthesized and dispersed into water-based lubricants for silicon nitride ceramic friction pairs. A 1:1 mixture of copper nanoparticles with linear and cubic morphologies exhibits the best lubrication performance at an optimal concentration of 0.2 wt%. The result shows an 87.01 % reduction in the coefficient of friction, and a wear rate of 0.18 % of that obtained in the case of deionized water. High-strength protective film is found generated on the ceramic surface, which reduces wear and promotes the forming process of ultra-smooth surface to achieve ultra-low friction. Based on the characterization results, lubrication mechanism is elucidated, quick generation of surface film with high strength is the essential for reducing wear and running-in period.

Achievement of Super-Low Friction between Ultra-polished Quartz Lubricated by Hydrated Hydroxyethyl Cellulose

Sheng Dezun,Zhou Jinxi,Zhang Hongdun,Tian Haitao,Liu Xicai,Qi Xuelian,Zhang Huichen,Wang Weiwei

The hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a biocompatible and nonperishable natural compound, which makes it an ideal additive for achieving super-low friction in hydration lubrication. In this work, ultra-polished quartz glasses were used as friction pairs with a contact area as large as 50.24 mm 2 . The lubrication behavior of HEC solutions was studied and the topology of the friction pairs was investigated. A super-low COF of 0.0012 was achieved under lubrication of 1.00 wt.% HEC. Increasing or decreasing the dosage of HEC will lead to defective lubrication. Dehydration tests have shown that saturated salts compete for the water of the hydrated HEC and destroy the lubricating film, demonstrating the importance of hydration in achieving super-low lubrication. The XPS spectra of quartz and quartz covered with lubricant indicate that there is no chemical interaction between the quartz and HEC during the friction. However, a negative shift in the peak of O 1s lines were detected, suggesting that physical adsorption of the oxygen atoms occurs at the interface between the quartz and the lubricant. The lubrication regime was analyzed by Hamrock-Dowson theory and the ratio λ is around 1.7–24.5, which suggested that the lubrication regime was mixed lubrication or hydrodynamic lubrication. According to the experiments and discussions, possible lubrication models are proposed for HEC lubricants with different concentrations, which can contribute to the development of new hydration lubricants with superlubricity properties and are of great importance for scientific exploration and engineering applications.

A universal strategy for growing multifunctional hydrogel coatings on diverse polymers via Fenton reaction

Shixin Lu,Zhaopeng Cai,Yuheng Lu,Youchen Tang,Jiapeng Song,Jiajun Huang,Ziying Cheng,Dingcai Wu,Peng Wang

Growing hydrogel coatings in a controlled manner exhibits promising potential for various applications, but lacks a universal method especially from polymer precursors. Herein, we propose a facile yet effective strategy to controllably grow various types of hydrogel coatings, either from polymers or monomers, on diverse polymer substrates via Fenton reaction. By immersing the pretreated polymer substrate in the given precursor solution, peroxide adsorbed into/on the substrate surface and Fe 2+ in the solution trigger continuous Fenton reaction at the solid–liquid interface to drive polymer chains interlinking to the substrate and crosslinking into a network synchronously. Furthermore, due to the high viscosity of the newly formed hydrogel, radicals are confined close to the interface by diffusion, which not only allows for precise control over the coating thickness but also enables the reutilization of precursor solution. As proof of concept, our method is successfully applied to produce hydrogel coatings with adjustable micron-scale thickness, impart excellent low-friction and antifouling properties to polymer substrates, and manipulate a series of fine hydrogel patterns. Therefore, this work presents a pioneering universal approach for growing hydrogel coatings on various polymer surfaces and implies significant potential applications.

Extremely low friction on gold surface with surfactant molecules induced by surface potential

Gao Tianyang,Li Jinjin,Wang Weiqi,Luo Jianbin

An extremely low friction state was observed on the gold surface induced by applying a specific negative potential in cationic surfactant solution. The friction force showed a remarkable reduction from 8.3 to 3.5 × 10 −2 nN (reduced by 99.6%) with increasing the period of negative applied potential, and the final friction coefficient could reduce down to 3 × 10 −4 . The extremely low friction state was robust, and it also exhibited an excellent load bearing capacity, which cannot be damaged by a high load. Moreover, the extremely low friction state achieved under negative applied potential could keep stable even after the removal of potential, but failed in a short time, once a specific positive potential was applied. It was demonstrated that there was a stable electro-adsorption of surfactant molecules on the gold surface induced by applying a negative potential, leading to the formation of a bilayer structure on the gold surface. The hydration layers of the bilayer on the gold surface and micelles on the silica probe provided a shear plane with an extremely low shear strength, leading to the extremely low friction state on the gold surface. This study provides a method to achieve extremely low friction state by applied potential.

Macroscopic liquid superlubric triboelectric nanogenerator: An in-depth understanding of solid-liquid interfacial charge behavior

Kaiqiang Wang,Xinyi Wang,Yilin Sun,Zhuolin Wu,Hanli Zhang,Ke Xiao,Jiayu Du,Jinjin Li,Jianbin Luo

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has been seen as one of the most promising energy harvesting technologies. However, there are an irreconcilable contradiction between low friction and high electrical output performance of the TENG. Here, we have devised a macroscale liquid superlubric triboelectric nanogenerator based on solid-liquid-solid structure, leveraging the concept of liquid superlubricity technology, resulting in a remarkable increase in both the open circuit voltage and short-circuit current by 53.0 % and 58.4 %, respectively. This huge increase in electrical output performance is accompanied by a 99.1 % reduction in friction coefficient (≈ 0.0025) and 99.993 % reduction in wear rate (≈ 0.76×10 −7 mm 3 /N·m), when compared to those of a lubricant-free triboelectric nanogenerator. This work delves into the lubrication and charge transfer mechanisms. The liquid superlubricity technology achieves friction reduction through a hybrid mechanism combining boundary and hydrodynamic lubrication. And the high outputs arise from the charges transfer at solid-liquid interface. The triboelectric charges generated by the friction pair are transferred from solid to the lubricating liquid. Meanwhile, the lubricating liquid promotes electron transfer and contributes additional electrons. Our work provides profound insights into the lubrication and charge transfer mechanisms at solid-liquid interfaces, and addresses the paradox of high output and low friction in TENGs.

A highly tough and ultralow friction resin nanocomposite with crosslinkable polymer-encapsulated nanoparticles

Hanjun Gong,Yan Song,Guo Liang Li,Guoxin Xie,Jianbin Luo

A resin nanocomposite embedded by encapsulated nanoparticles with exceptional mechanical and lubrication properties is reported. The functional encapsulated nanoparticles, synthesized by miniemulsion co -polymerization of methyl methacrylate with n -butyl acrylate, styrene and glycidyl methacrylate, had tunable glass transition temperatures and surface reactive glycidyl groups. The as-synthesized nanoparticles with controlled size, shell component and surface function, impacted a nanocomposite with the high toughness and strength as well as ultralow friction properties by their covalent crosslinking with the matrix and the formation of thin boundary lubricant film. Remarkably, the optimal toughness and strength of the nanocomposite with encapsulated nanoparticles achieved 3.8 and 1.5 times those of the counterpart with encapsulated microparticles , respectively. The nanocomposite incorporated with as-synthesized nanoparticles exhibited an ultralow coefficient of friction (COF) and a wear rate of 0.027 and 8.0 × 10 −7 mm 3 /Nm, which were only 3.9% and 0.6% those of the matrix, respectively. The developed robust mechanical and ultralow friction resin nanocomposite from crosslinkable and flexible polymer-encapsulated nanoparticles is highly expected for engineering applications .

Nickel phosphorous trisulfide: A ternary 2D material with an ultra-low coefficient of friction

Deng Haoyu,Yu Tongtong,Du Changhe,Shen Ruilin,Zhao Yongkang,He Xinjian,Feng Yange,Zhang Liqiang,Wang Daoai

Ultra-low friction is crucial for the anti-friction, anti-wear, and long-life operation of nanodevices. However, very few two-dimensional materials can achieve ultra-low friction, and they have some limitations in their applications. Therefore, exploring novel materials with ultra-low friction properties is greatly significant. The emergence of ternary two-dimensional materials has opened new opportunities for nanoscale ultra-low friction. This study introduced nickel phosphorous trisulfide (NiPS 3 , referred to as NPS), a novel two-dimensional ternary material capable of achieving ultralow friction in a vacuum, into the large nanotribology family. Large-size and high-quality NPS crystals with up to 14 mm × 6 mm × 0.3 mm dimensions were grown using the chemical vapor transport method. The NPS nanosheets were obtained using mechanical exfoliation. The dependence of the NPS nanotribology on layer, velocity, and angle was systematically investigated using lateral force microscopy. Interestingly, the coefficient of friction (COF) of NPS with multilayers was decreased to about 0.0045 under 0.005 Pa vacuum condition (with load up to 767.8 nN), achieving the ultra-low friction state. The analysis of the frictional dissipation energy and adhesive forces showed that NPS with multilayers had minimum frictional dissipation energy and adhesive forces since the interlayer interactions were weak and the meniscus force was excluded under vacuum conditions. This study on the nanoscale friction of a ternary two-dimensional material lays a foundation for exploring the nanoscale friction and friction origin of other two-dimensional materials in the future.

Organofluorinated Ag/2D diamond nanocomposites achieve simultaneously ultra-low friction and wear in self-lubricating epoxy

Qingzhao Cai,Chengcheng Jiao,Junhao Wu,Shanqin Ge,Wei Li,Long Chen,Genxiang Gong,Jiamin Yu,Yaokang lv,Jinhong Yu,Kazuhito Nishimura,Nan Jiang,Tao Cai

Hybrid fillers show great advantages in improving the frictional properties of epoxy (EP) composites. However, to date, achieving ultra-low coefficients of friction and wear rates in self-lubricating EP systems through the use of nanofillers remains a challenge. In this study, the hard diamond nanosheets, soft silver nanoparticles, dopamine hydrochloride, and 1H,1H,2H,2H perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (FDTS) were designed to prepare organofluorinated Ag/2D diamond nanocomposites (NDs-fPDA-Ag NPs). The tribological tests demonstrated that 3 wt% addition of NDs-fPDA-Ag NPs in EP exhibited the best friction reduction and anti-wear properties, which were reduced by 84.3 % and 98.6 % compared with pure EP. Significantly, it stands out as the sole instance reported to date that has successfully achieved the oil lubrication (average coefficient of friction 0.085 less than 0.1) in dry friction while maintaining ultra-low wear rate (4.9 × 10 -6 mm 3 /(N·m)). The superior lubrication effect is primarily attributed to three key factors: the high hardness of the two-dimensional (2D) diamond nanosheets, which provides exceptional wear resistance; the “rolling effect” generated by the zero-dimensional (0D) silver nanoparticles, which significantly reduces the friction coefficient; and the low surface energy of outermost grafted organofluorine compounds, which minimizes interactions between the NDs-fPDA-Ag NPs and the steel friction pair. The soft and hard combination of low surface energy 2D diamond greatly enhances the tribological performance of EP composites and provides a new approach for the preparation of excellent self-lubricating epoxy systems.
