Leveraging cerium supported WO3 cathode via lattice reconstruction for ultra-low polarization lithium-carbon dioxide batteries

Binbin Dan,Zhiyuan Xia,Linyue Li,Xiang Li,Wentao Wang,Long Cheng,Zhoulu Wang,Xiang Liu,Di Wang

As the discharge product of lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO 2 ) batteries, the reversible decomposition of Li 2 CO 3 has long been a critical bottleneck limiting the electrochemical performance of Li-CO 2 batteries. Appropriate design of catalysts is reported to effectively tackle this problem, a theory-guided design and preparation of cathode catalysts is especially favored due to their highly efficient catalyst-adsorbate interactions. Here, Ce atoms are anchored onto WO 3 through their deep-energy-level orbitals and localized 4f electrons. Benefiting from their unique role in band hybridization, Ce atoms establish a dual d-f band redox center. Concurrently, the introduction of Ce induces a Jahn-Teller distortion in the WO 3 lattice, which selectively regulates crystal facet growth. This facet engineering strategy facilitates strong Li 2 CO 3 anchoring, enabling the decomposition with an ultra-low charge-discharge polarization gap of 0.62 V during CO 2 evolution reaction (CO 2 ER) process. This Li-CO 2 battery can maintain a charging voltage below 4.0 V for 280 cycles with the current density of 200 mA g −1 . This Ce-induced lattice reconstruction strategy overcomes the limitations of conventional catalyst activity, offering novel strategies and theoretical insights for the development of high-performance Li-CO 2 batteries.

In-situ regulation of zinc metal surface for Dendrite-Free Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors

Yujia Long,Xiaomin Huang,Yuanxia Li,Mei Yi,Jiaqi Hou,Xinyi Zhou,Qiang Hu,Qiaoji Zheng,Dunmin Lin

Aqueous Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) combine the high power density of supercapacitors with the high energy density of batteries. However, the growth of dendrite and spontaneous Zn corrosion damage the service life of ZHSCs and further seriously restrict their large-scale application in energy storage fields. Herein, we study the corrosion mechanism of Zn metal in ZnSO 4 solution and report a method for the modification of Zn anode with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) layer grown in-situ. The obtained ZIF-8 layer with hydrophobicity can not only inhibit Zn corrosion and induce Zn electroplating/peeling on the Zn surface, but also promote uniform deposition of Zn during charge/discharge processes. As a result, the prepared dendrite-free Zn electrode shows low polarization (89.0 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and high cycling stability (over 800 h at 10 mA cm −2 ), and the developed ZHSC maintains a high capacity retention of 96% after 13,000 cycles at 5 A g −1 . Furthermore, a solar power supply system is assembled by the ZHSC and monocrystalline silicon plates to certify the utility of the device, and it can light a LED successfully. This study provides a simple and inexpensive strategy to manipulate the Zn electrodeposition behavior from dendrites to non-dendritic structures, which builds a way for the development of practical ZHSCs with mild electrolytes.

Suppression of Dendrites by a Self-Healing Elastic Interface in a Sodium Metal Battery

Jianwen Wang,Meiyang Hu,Yingying Zhu,Mengyang Cao,Rashid Khan,Xianwen Wang,Lu Huang,Yingpeng Wu

The safety issues caused by sodium dendrites limit the widespread application of sodium metal batteries. Herein, a self-healing polymer electrolyte (SPE) is prepared by immersing the self-healing polymer in a liquid electrolyte. Benefiting from the self-healing properties, elastic interface, and dense nonporous structure of the SPE, the fabricated NaK|MC SPE|NaK symmetric battery presents a long battery life (∼590 h) and low polarization voltage (192 mV). Moreover, the PTCDA|MC SPE|NaK full cell also delivers stable long cycles and outstanding rate performance.

A Magnesium/Lithium Hybrid-Ion Battery with Modified All-Phenyl-Complex-Based Electrolyte Displaying Ultralong Cycle Life and Ultrahigh Energy Density

Yingyi Ding,Tianli Han,Zhao Wu,Yong Guan,Jun Hu,Chaoquan Hu,Yangchao Tian,Jinyun Liu

Magnesium/lithium hybrid-ion batteries (MLHBs) combine the advantages of high safety and fast ionic kinetics, which enable them to be promising emerging energy-storage systems. Here, a high-performance MLHB using a modified all-phenyl complex with a lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide electrolyte and a NiCo2S4 cathode on a copper current collector is developed. A reversible conversion involving a copper collector with NiCo2S4 efficiently avoids the electrolyte dissociation and diffusion difficulties of Mg2+ ions, enabling low polarization and fast redox, which is verified by X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis. Such combination affords the best MLHB among all those ever reported, with a reversible capacity of 204.7 mAh g–1 after 2600 cycles at 2.0 A g–1, and delivers an ultrahigh full electrode-basis energy density of 708 Wh kg–1. The developed MLHB also achieves good rate performance and temperature tolerance at −10 and 50 °C with a low electrolyte consumption. The hybrid-ion battery system presented here could inspire a broad set of engineering potentials for high-safety battery technologies and beyond.
