Gold-based catalysts are renowned for their exceptional low-temperature oxidation activity and have found widespread application in the thermos catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO). In this study, an in-situ hydrothermal synthesis method was employed to prepare Au 0.5 Ni x /ATP catalysts. By altering the doping amount of Ni during the synthesis process, the impact of Ni doping on the catalytic reactivity was investigated. Compared to pure gold-based catalysts, the dispersion and sintering resistance of the Au 0.5 Ni x /ATP catalysts were enhanced. The OH - ions present in the alkaline solution provided by TPAOH disrupted the morphology of ATP, leading to a flocculent appearance for the Au 0.5 /ATP catalyst. With varying doping levels of Ni, the rod-like structure of ATP gradually recovered due to the strong interaction between Ni 2+ and OH-. On the Au 0.5 Ni x /ATP catalysts, NiO, being a p-type semiconductor, was prone to electron loss, with the lost electrons being captured by Au 3+ to form Au 0 and stronger Au and Ni interactions. When Ni species were introduced onto the Au/ATP surface, the synergistic effect between Au and Ni resulted in higher catalytic activity, favoring the catalytic oxidation of HCHO. The catalytic efficiency peaked when the Ni doping level reached 20 wt%.

In this work, the low-temperature oxidation of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether (OME 3 ) with multi-component surrogates for diesel (DS:60%n-heptane/20%cyclohexane/20%toluene) and gasoline (GS:20%n-heptane/60%iso-octane/20%toluene) blends was investigated respectively using a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) with a temperature range of 500–950 K, constant fuel fraction of 0.008, residence time (τ) of 2 s and near atmospheric pressure. Two detailed multi-component kinetic mechanisms were established to describe the low-temperature oxidation characteristics and the interaction of blended fuels. Generally, the oxidation process of highly-reactive OME 3 and n-heptane is inhibited, while that of inactive fuels, including iso-octane, cyclohexane and toluene, are triggered and enhanced in various degrees in the blends. The OH radical acts as a bridge between high and low reactivity components. It is of interest that n-heptane reveals a quite different low-temperature oxidation behavior in diesel (DS) and gasoline (GS) surrogate respectively. In GS, the low-temperature oxidation of n-heptane is significantly inhibited, while in DS, the inhibition is mild, mainly due to the much different low-temperature oxidation characteristics of iso-octane and cyclohexane. As for OME 3 , it mainly improves the reactivity of the blends in the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) process. As for low-reactivity fuels of iso-octane and toluene, their low-temperature oxidations are completely triggered and dominated by highly-reactive fuels due to their weak OH build-up ability. On the contrary, when the low-temperature oxidation of cyclohexane is triggered, its self-enhancement also plays a crucial role in addition to the promoting effect from highly-reactive fuels. Therefore, cyclohexane reveals a promoting-ignition effect on the blended fuels, while iso-octane and toluene act as an inhibiting-ignition factor in blends.

As an important component of transportation fuels, toluene has little reactivity in the low temperature regime. However, the low temperature reactivity of toluene may be enhanced by the reaction of other reactive components (e.g., n-heptane) in fuel mixtures. This work examines low temperature oxidation of toluene in jet stirred reactor oxidation of an n-heptane/toluene mixture (1:1 in mole, 500–800 K, ϕ=0.5, τ=2.0 s, p = 1 bar). Two measurement techniques, time of flight molecular beam mass spectrometry using synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation as the photon ionization source and gas chromatography mass spectrometry, were applied to identify and measure 32 species, including four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and oxygenated PAH (OPAH). Numerical simulations using the latest kinetic model from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory predicted the mole fractions of fuel molecules and small intermediates well, but under-predicted the mole fractions of oxygenated aromatics (phenol, benzyl alcohol, and cresol). The identification of benzyl peroxide–an important intermediate–supported the proposed formation pathways for the identified aromatics. Model analysis highlighted the influence of H-atom abstraction, OH/H radical ipso substitution, and OH addition reactions of toluene on the formation of phenol , benzyl alcohol, and cresol, which may further grow to OPAH molecules by the addition of benzyl radical from H-atom abstraction of toluene.
