In this study, a silane coupling agent and kaolin, a natural mineral resource, were introduced into the wet mixing process of natural rubber latex, the high wear-resistant and low-generation heat natural rubber composites were prepared. The sputtering, collision, and deposition of coupling agent/fillers/natural rubber latex mixed emulsion onto the roller effectively could break up the filler aggregates, enable fillers to be better infiltrated, distributed, and dispersed in the rubber. The effects of dry/wet mixing processes and the ratio of kaolin to silica on the crosslinking density, filler dispersion, extrusion rheological properties, gas barrier properties, dynamic mechanical properties and thermal stability of NR composites were investigated, and the silanization mechanism was summarized by FTIR and XRD. The experimental results showed that kaolin improved the crosslinking density and failure temperature, reduced the Payne effect, extrusion swell, and rolling resistance. Compared with 60 phr silica-filled natural rubber, the gas barrier property and wear resistance of 60 phr kaolin-filled natural rubber were improved by 64 % and 27 %, respectively, and the rolling resistance was reduced by 57 %. When the ratios of silica to kaolin were both 20:40, the crosslinking density, gas barrier property, and wear resistance of wet mixing were improved by 24 %, 45 %, and 9 %, respectively, compared with dry mixing. This study provided a new method for the high-value application of kaolin in wet mixing and green tires.

Owing to its remarkable electrical, mechanical and thermal properties, graphene has been considered the most promising reinforcing filler for the development of rubber nanocomposites. In this work, a novel interfacial structure consisting of reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/N-tert-butyl-2-benzothiazole sulfonamide (NS)/natural rubber (NR) (NR/NS-rGO) with covalent bond connections was fabricated using one-step modification and coprecipitation methods. When the filler loading of NS-rGO is 0.42 vol.%, not only the thermal conductivity of the rubber composite increases to 0.237 Wm −1 K −1 , which is 21.5% higher than that of pure NR; meanwhile, the internal heat generation decreases to 2.6 °C, which is 45.8% lower than that of reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/ascorbic acid (VC)/natural rubber (NR) (NR/VC-rGO), and the mechanical properties have been greatly improved. The results demonstrated that the covalent bond connections greatly reduced interfacial thermal resistance at the filler/matrix interface. Furthermore, the enhanced interfacial interaction reduced frictional heat generation at the filler/matrix interface. More importantly, this strategy provided creative insights into the high application potential of graphene in the rubber industry.

It is still a bottleneck to simultaneously attain enhanced mechanical properties, thermal conductivity and low heat build-up properties for graphene-rubber composites obtained by conventional fabrication processes. The critical elements to enhance the comprehensive performance of rubber include excellent dispersion and the interaction of filler and matrix. In this work, the increased filler structure degree with point-surface structured SiC/GO (SG) and the strong interface modified with nano-sulfur synergistically improve the dispersibility and interfacial interaction, which effectively achieves excellent integrated performance at low filler content. More importantly, nano-sulfur not only acts as a modifier to improve interfacial compatibility, but also has a vulcanization function that enables SG and natural rubber (NR) molecular chains to form a uniformly distributed cross-linked network structure. Consequently, only when 4 phr of SiC/GO-S (SG-S) filler was added to NR, the tensile strength , thermal conductivity and low heat generation properties are higher than those of NR/GO rubber by 22.5%, 21.2% and 8.3%. Therefore, this work may open new horizons for the development of green tire.

With the rapid development of transportation system, the safety, reliability, and durability of green tires play an important role in modern transportation. While for the material preparation, the poor dispersion ability of reinforced filler and the weak interfacial interactions with polymer matrix seriously restricted the further application in the green tire field. Meanwhile, avoiding the use of organic solvents is also an environmental issue that needs to be considered in the preparation process. Herein, water-soluble 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (MMI) functionalized graphene oxide (GO-MMI) was obtained through a simple, green and one-step hydrothermal method. Additionally, the modified graphene oxide/natural rubber composites (GO-MMI/NR) with different GO-MMI content were prepared by the latex coprecipitation approach. As a result, the modified GO-MMI could be evenly dispersed in the NR matrix through the mechanical blending and the obtained GO-MMI/NR composites possessed the good comprehensive properties after vulcanization. Specifically, the tensile strength (26.8 MPa), elongation at break (801%), low heat build-up (6.2°C), Deutsches Institute for Normung (DIN) abrasion loss volume (71.31 mm 3 ) and heat resistance index (162.1°C) were synchronic-lifting when compared with the GO/NR composites. The results demonstrated that obtained GO-MMI/NR composites owned the promising application for the industrial-scale green tires.
