In flotation, the separation and concentration of copper-iron sulfide ores are usually carried out at high alkalinity to depress pyrite, and plenty of lime could block the flotation pipeline and affect the recovery of precious metals during practical operation. Herein, the current research hotspot to achieve the separation of copper-iron sulfide ores under low alkalinity. This paper presented an eco-friendly reagent, quercetin, for the flotation separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite, and investigated the effect on the flotation performance of the two minerals. The interaction mechanism of quercetin with mineral was demonstrated using zeta potential measurements, atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface adsorption measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The flotation results showed that the depressive effect of quercetin on pyrite was more pronounced in comparison to its impact on chalcopyrite at pH 8.0, and the chalcopyrite recovery reached 90 %, whereas that of pyrite was under 10 %. The surface analysis revealed quercetin chemisorption on the mineral surface through interaction with metal sites. In the presence of quercetin, the quercetin significantly diminished the ability of pyrite to adsorb xanthan but had minor effects on the adsorption of chalcopyrite.

Conventional flotation separation methods for Cu–Fe sulfide minerals, such as highly alkaline processes and cyanidation processes, often lead to environmental pollution. As a result, the development of low-alkalinity processes and environmentally friendly reagents has become both critical and challenging. In this study, levodopa (L-dopa) was evaluated as a potential depressant for the flotation separation of Cu–Fe sulfide minerals, with a focus on its selective depressive effect under low-alkalinity conditions. Micro-flotation test showed that, under low-alkalinity conditions, L-dopa at a concentration of 4 × 10 –4 mol/L demonstrated a notable selective depression effect on pyrite. Specifically, the pyrite recovery was only 11.81 %, while chalcopyrite recovery reached 94.53 %. Zeta potential, total organic carbon (TOC), adsorption quantity, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies confirmed that L-dopa adsorbed differently on the surfaces of the two minerals. The adsorption of L-dopa on pyrite was substantially stronger than on chalcopyrite. Furthermore, pretreatment with L-dopa effectively hindered KBX adsorption on the pyrite surface, further diminishing its floatability. In contrast, L-dopa had a relatively minor effect on the adsorption of KBX on chalcopyrite. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses indicated that L-dopa was likely chemisorbed onto the pyrite surface, with Fe sites acting as active binding sites. In contrast, the adsorption of L-dopa on chalcopyrite was relatively weak. Thus, L-dopa demonstrated a potent selective depressive effect on pyrite, showing promise for the effective separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite under low-alkalinity conditions.

In this study, a new flotation approach, a low-alkaline and non-desliming process, was introduced for improving lead and zinc recoveries, lowering production cost and reducing environmental pollution . Lab-scale experiments results show that the new process contributed to the flotation of the complex mixed sulfide-oxide lead and zinc ore regarding two aspects: (1) High alkaline process (pH = 12±) was replaced by low alkaline process (pH = 9±) by using collector WS (a mixture of ethyl thiocarbamate, ammonium dibutyldithiophosphate and dithiophosphate-25) and combined depressant Na 2 S/ZnSO 4 /Na 2 SO 3 for lead sulfide flotation; (2) Non-desliming process was successfully achieved by using collector MA (a mixture of ether amine, hydroxyethyl cellulose and polyacrylic acid) and combined depressant SHP/SS (sodium hexametaphosphate/sodium silicate) for zinc oxide flotation. And 43.37% Pb in the Pb concentrate was recovered, the corresponding Pb grade was 52.73%, total 84.42% Zn was recovered by the flotation of zinc sulfide minerals and zinc oxide minerals . Moreover, the two aspects of the new approach were systematically verified from lab-scale to industrial-scale application. The industrial-scale flotation tests show that Pb recovery in Pb concentrate increased by 1.86% compared with that of original system during industrial-scale tests period, and the Pb recovery increased by 4.09% compared with that of original system before industrial-scale tests period, while the Zn operating recovery in zinc oxide concentrate improved by 19.52%. Moreover, the total reagent cost of the whole new process significantly declined by 3.93 yuan per ton of ore.

Achieving high-efficiency electrooxidation of methanol (MOR) under low alkalinity is critical for the industrial application of direct methanol fuel cells. This challenge can be addressed by modulating the electron density of nanosized Pt particles via the support’s exchange effect. Herein, an electron-enriched Pt catalyst (Pt/Mn3O4) was successfully synthesized through the structural tuning of MnO2. The Pt/Mn3O4 catalyst exhibits a superior performance, delivering a mass activity of 1150 mA mgPt–1 in 0.1 M KOH with 4 M methanol, significantly outperforming commercial Pt/C (446 mA mgPt–1). The transfer of electrons from Mn3O4 to Pt was confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and magnetic hysteresis loop analysis. Experimental and computational studies elucidate the nucleation mechanism of electron-enriched Pt, the source of active species (Pt–OH) for methanol oxidation, and the role of high-valence Mn. Furthermore, the spontaneous methanol decomposition on Pt/Mn3O4 and the corresponding active sites of dehydrogenation and CO oxidation were identified. Interference-free experiments revealed the deactivation mechanism of Pt/Mn3O4, underscoring the pivotal role of CO32– in the alkaline MOR.
