Simple and reliable mass production of platinum-based alloy catalysts with excellent activity and stability is an enormous challenge for the wide commercialization of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), especially those with ultralow loading of Pt. Herein, an economical, highly durable, and efficient catalyst consisting of structurally ordered intermetallic Pt3Co alloy nanoparticles with ultralow Pt loading (1.4 wt %) supported on hierarchically porous carbon structure (three-dimensional, 3D Pt3Co/C) were synthesized with large-scale production by the NaCl-template-assisted approach. The obtained best sample, 3D Pt3Co/C#1, exhibited mass activities of 11.56 and 0.70 A mgPt–1 for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) in alkaline and acidic electrolytes, which are 60.8 and 6.4 times those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. Furthermore, the 3D Pt3Co/C#1 exhibited excellent stability both in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, with almost no decay of the half-wave potential after 5000 potential cycles. This work proposes a new high-yielding, simple, and environmentally friendly method to fabricate excellent Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts with ultralow loading of Pt, which opens up new hopes for the development of PEMFC.

The design of high-performance catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is urgently needed in the development of renewable energy. Herein, we report a rapid strategy for synthesizing an efficient catalyst with ultralow-Pt nanoclusters on a two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene support (denoted as Pt NCs-MXene, 5 μg cm−2) via electrophoretic deposition and cyclic voltammetry. The MXene support not only provides more active sites to anchor Pt nanoclusters (NCs) but also increases the electrochemically active surface area. The electrochemical HER performance of the as-synthesized Pt NCs-MXene catalyst was investigated in an acid electrolyte. The results showed that at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, the overpotential and Tafel slope of the Pt NCs-MXene were 40 mV and 50.8 mV dec−1, respectively, lower than those of the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. The turnover frequency and mass activity of the Pt NCs-MXene were 7.09 H2 s−1 and 7.02 A mgPt−1, respectively, which were approximately 70 times those of the Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, the developed catalyst also exhibited a stable hydrogen evolution current for 18 h in a long-term cycling test. This work can provide novel and nontoxic methods for the preparation of low-Pt loading electrocatalysts for high-efficiency HER.

Conventional pyrolytic platinum loaded on commercial F-doped tin oxide (Pt//cFTO) conductive glass as counter electrode (CE) is a crucial component of DSSCs. In this paper, an integrative method was used to prepare platinum loaded on in-house-made iFTO glass (Pt//iFTO) without cFTO glass and the newly synthesized Pt//iFTO electrodes were applied as CEs in the DSCs. Compared with common Pt//cFTO electrode loading amount of Pt of 32.17 μg cm −2 which shows an efficiency of 6.70% as a CE in DSSCs, Pt//iFTO electrode loading less amount of Pt of 13.01 μg cm −2 still displays a slight higher cell efficiency of 6.77%. The integrative method requires simple equipment, easy operation, and discards the cFTO glass and significantly reduces costs. Meanwhile, Pt catalyst layer and iFTO substrate layer were formed at the same time in this method, saving a lot of thermal energy, which provides a new method for preparing electrodes needed high temperature post-processing.

The design and manufacture of high activity and thermal stability catalysts with minimal precious metal loading is essential for deep degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this paper, a novel single-atom Pt-CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 catalyst with ultra-low Pt loading capacity (0.06 wt%, denoted as 0.06Pt-SA) was fabricated via one-step co-precipitation method. The 0.06Pt-SA exhibited excellent toluene degradation activity of T 90 = 169 °C, matched with the nanoparticle Pt-supported CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 catalyst with more than six times higher Pt loading (0.41 wt%, denoted as 0.41Pt-NP). Moreover, the ultra-long durability (toluene conversion remains 99% after 120 h stability test) and excellent toluene degradation ability in a wide space speed range of 0.06Pt-SA were superior to that of 0.41Pt-NP catalyst. The excellent performance was derived from the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between the single atomic Pt and the carrier, which induced more Pt 0 and Ce 3+ for oxygen activation and more Co 3+ for toluene removal. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments confirmed that the conversion of intermediates was accelerated in the reaction process, thereby promoting the toluene degradation. Our results should inspire the exploitation of noble single-atomic modification strategy for developing the low cost and high performance VOCs catalyst.

It is necessary and challenging to develop platinum-based electrocatalysts with low Pt content and high performance for industrial development in a suitable strategy. Herein, ultralow Pt (0.35 wt%) loading Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets (named as 2-Pt/Ni(OH) 2 ) with cataphracted structure is synthesized on nickel foam by one-step hydrothermal process. It only needs an overpotential of 34 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm -2 without any significant decrease for 40 hours. This excellent performance of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is attributed to the fact that the cataphracted structure not only has a larger active area and more active sites, but also effectively limits the size of Pt nanoparticles to 2~3 nm, which results in a higher active quality. In addition, the relatively simple and easily operational one-step method can reduce the Pt content to 0.35 wt% significantly. This facile strategy opens up new approaches in the rational design and synthesis of low loading Pt electrocatalysts with eminent electrocatalytic activity for industrial production.

MOF-on-MOF heterostructure materials integrate two or more MOFs with distinct structures to combine their advantages while creating synergistic effects. In this work, a Pt Co MOF/UiO 66 composite was fabricated through hydrothermal-assisted epitaxial growth and electrodeposition. This process formed an amorphous/crystalline heterointerface with intertwined pore structures, which enhanced the surface contact area and overcame lattice mismatch. The loading of ultra-low-content Pt nanoparticles introduces abundant surface defects and microstructures, which enhance structural stability and providing additional electrochemical active sites. The interfacial electronic structure difference facilitated charge redistribution, with Co acting as an electron donor and Pt/Zr as electron acceptors, creating a built-in electric field that accelerated charge transfer and enhanced conductivity. As a result, the Pt Co MOF/UiO 66 electrode delivered an outstanding specific capacity of 824.3C g −1 at 1 A g −1 , while the assembled hybrid supercapacitor achieved a maximum energy density of 104.2 Wh kg −1 and remarkable cycling stability (93.3 % retention after 10,000 cycles at 40 A g −1 ). Additionally, when employed as a hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalyst, the material required only 147 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm −2 . This work highlights the great potential of MOF-on-MOF heterostructures for dual-functional energy storage and conversion applications, offering new design strategies for advanced electrode materials.

The design of support materials with uniformly anchored sites is crucial for controlling the particle size distribution of platinum (Pt) and enhancing the performance of Pt-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. Cobalt Metal-Organic Framework (Co-MOF)-derived carbon is a promising support for anchoring Pt nanoparticles. However, transition metal sites in Co-MOF tend to aggregate during the carbonization process. Herein, we have developed a strategy to achieved the in-situ reduction of cobalt sites by pre-treating Co-MOF in a reducing atmosphere, resulting in the hydrogen-reduced cobalt-modified nitrogen-doped carbon (Co@NOC-H 2 ) support material. As a result, a low-Pt catalyst (PtCo@NOC-H 2 ) with uniform distribution nanoscale particle size has been developed. Compared to the Co-MOF material pretreated in an nitrogen atmosphere (Co@NOC-N 2 ), Co@NOC-H 2 exhibited uniformly dispersed cobalt-platinum nanoparticles (CoPt NPs), which contributes to enhanced catalytic activity and stability in acidic media. Electrochemical measurements show that the PtCo@NOC-H 2 catalyst with a low-Pt loading (0.05 mg Pt cm −2 ) demonstrates excellent performance, with an overpotential of only 16.7 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 37.5 mV dec −1 . Furthermore, it maintains stable performance with no significant degradation after 156 h of cycling. This study provided a feasible approach for developing cost-effective low-Pt catalysts.

It is challenging to synthesize oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts that are highly efficient, affordable, and stable for use in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. To address this challenge, we developed a low platinum-loading (only 6.68% wt) ORR catalyst (PtCu1-NC), comprising CuPt nanoparticles (average size: 1.51 nm) supported on the N-doped carbon substrates. PtCu1-NC possesses a high specific surface area of 662 m2 g–1 and a hierarchical porous structure, facilitating efficient mass transfer. The synergistic effect from introduced copper and the electron effect from nitrogen modify the electronic structure of platinum, effectively accelerating the ORR reaction and enhancing stability. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate the catalytic mechanism and further verify the synergistic effect. Electrochemical assessments indicate that PtCu1-NC exhibits specific activity and mass activity 5.3 and 5.6 times higher, respectively, than commercial Pt/C. The half-wave potential is 27 mV more positive than that of commercial Pt/C. The electrochemical active surface area value is 104.3 m2 g–1, surpassing that of Pt/C. Approximately 78% of current is retained after 10,000 s chronoamperometry measurement. These results highlight the effectiveness of alloying in improving the catalyst performance.
