Body heat, a clean and ubiquitous energy source, is promising as a renewable resource to supply wearable electronics. Emerging tough thermogalvanic device could be a sustainable platform to convert body heat energy into electricity for powering wearable electronics if its Carnot-relative efficiency ( η r ) reaches ~5%. However, maximizing both the η r and mechanical strength of the device are mutually exclusive. Here, we develop a rational strategy to construct a flexible thermogalvanic armor (FTGA) with a η r over 8% near room temperature, yet preserving mechanical robustness. The key to our design lies in simultaneously realizing the thermosensitive-crystallization and salting-out effect in the elaborately designed ion-transport highway to boost η r and improve mechanical strength. The FTGA achieves an ultrahigh η r of 8.53%, coupling with impressive mechanical toughness of 70.65 MJ m −3 and substantial elongation (~900%) together. Our strategy holds sustainable potential for harvesting body heat and powering wearable electronics without recharging.

Thermoelectric (TE) textiles which can harvest thermal energy from the human body, are highly desirable and vital to the charging of wearable electronics owing to their stable and long-term power output. The typical carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns or bismuth telluride (Bi 2 Te 3 ) based inorganic TE materials used hitherto limit the development of TE textiles, because of their high cost and rareness. In this work, scalable and high-TE performance carbon nanotube composite yarns (CNTYs) are developed using p- and n-type tuneable multi-wall CNTs and single-wall CNTs as TE materials and waterborne polyurethane (WPU) as the binder. The mechanical properties of the CNTYs are tuned and improved considerably by adding a small amount of WPU. Furthermore, TE yarns with p- and n-type segmented structures are prepared by treating CNTYs with poly(3, 4-ethylene dioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate solution and n-type dopant polyetherimide, respectively. Based on the prepared p- and n-type segmented TE yarns, a TE textile with 75 p–n pairs that achieve outstanding TE output is fabricated. The TE textile can generate a high power density of 95.74 μW m −2 with a voltage density of 3.76 V m −2 at a temperature difference of 32 K. It provides an output voltage of ~ 37 mV outdoors (~ 12 ℃) when worn on the arm and demonstrates potential application to electronic devices after amplification. The fabrication method used in this study is not only a low-cost, scalable for preparing high-performance TE yarns but also realizes the body heat harvesting and temperature sensing of yarn-based TE textiles. As for the self-supporting composite films, it is significant to develop a structural design that allows for excellent flexibility while reducing the negative effect on thermoelectric (TE) properties. Herein, a robust, flexible TE film was fabricated by in situ chemical transformation and vacuum-assisted filtration without any organic solvents involved. The performance of the films was further optimized by adjusting the Ag/Te ratio and post-treatment methods. Owing to the semi-interpenetrating nanonetwork structure formed by AgxTe nanowires and bacterial cellulose, the obtained TE film displayed a high tensile strength of ∼78.4 MPa and a high power factor of 48.9 μW m–1 K–2 at room temperature. A slight electrical conductivity decrement of the TE film in flexible test (∼2% after 1000 bending cycles) indicates an excellent flexibility. Finally, a TE bracelet was assembled to harvest body heat energy, and a steady current of ∼2.7 μA was generated when worn on the wrist indoors. This work provides a reference for the structural design and practical application of flexible TE films.

Phase change materials (PCMs) are highly promising materials in the field of energy harvesting. However, most of them lack flexibility and visualization function. Herein, a flexible phase change organogel (PCOG) was prepared via one-step in-situ polymerization reaction for the construction of three-dimensional network to “lock” n-dodecanol as PCM. The PCOG demonstrated excellent flexibility, high latent heat of 121.7 J/g and encapsulation rate of 60.6%, and also exhibited excellent cycling stability. The transmittance of the PCOG increased from 15% to 85% with the phase change process, displaying the visualization function. Furthermore, the PCOG also showed superior adhesion performance on different substrates. The generated electrical potential of a commercial thermoelectric generator adhered by the PCOG was 3 times higher than that without PCOG using human body as thermal source. Our findings provided a new strategy to prepare functional composite PCMs and the PCOG showed great potential in energy harvesting, storage and utilization.
