Sulfadiazine destruction by chlorination in a pilot-scale water distribution system: Kinetics, pathway, and bacterial community structure

Feilong Dong,Cong Li,John Crittenden,Tuqiao Zhang,Qiufeng Lin,Guilin He,Weiqiu Zhang,Jinming Luo

Sulfadiazine (SDZ) has been frequently detected in surface waters in recent years. We evaluated the kinetics, mechanisms, intermediate products and bacterial community structure that result from the reaction of SDZ with free chlorine (HOCl/OCl − ). We examined this in a pilot-scale water distribution system. Neutral pH had the fastest rate of destruction of SDZ. A second-order reaction constant for the destruction of SDZ by chlorine increased with increasing concentration of free chlorine (FC). For different pipe materials, the rate of SDZ degradation decreased as follows: stainless steel (SS) pipe > polyethylene (PE) pipe > ductile iron (DI) pipe. Based on the less complex bacterial diversity and more chlorine-resistant by 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene analysis, SS pipe and PE pipe were more suitable in SDZ degradation in water distribution system (WDS) than DI pipe. In addition, the transformation products from SDZ chlorination were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the products included SO 2 extrusion products, haloacetic acids and trihalomethanes. Toxicity tests further confirmed that the toxicity of SDZ chlorination was higher both in low FC (0.7 mg/L) and high FC (1.3 mg/L) in WDS.

Composite hydrogel-based photothermal self-pumping system with salt and bacteria resistance for super-efficient solar-powered water evaporation

Yaling Li,Xiang-lei Shi,Li-jie Sun,Mingyu Zhao,Ting Jiang,Weicun Jiang,Mengyuan Deng,Shuguang Yang,Yi Wang

Synergistically increasing the solar adsorption/conversion, regulating the water transfer and activation as well as resisting the fouling to enhance the solar-powered interfacial water evaporation performance remains an urgent challenge. Herein, a smart 3D porous photothermal composite hydrogel MoS 2 @GH, where the antibacterial porous molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanoflowers were intercalated between graphene (MoS 2 @GH) via a simple chemical reduction, was prepared. This cooperated with a controllable self-pumping system of salt concentration differences and liquid level height differences-driven capillary water transfer/transpiration (CHTS) for solar steam generator. In this generator, the hierarchically porous hydrogel not only contributed the light trapping to enhance solar absorption but also generated more dispersed hotspots to access and activate water. Simultaneously, the CHTS system regulated an appropriate water replenishment without direct immersion into bulk water to match the evaporation of hydrogel. As a result, this system can achieve a super-efficient water evaporation rate of 3.2 kg m −2  h −1 under 0.9 sun, and can also delay the salting out fouling and resist the bacterial biofouling. These together with the good thermal and chemical stability of the pure inorganic hydrogel entrust an efficient water desalination , paving a robust way for sustainable clean water production.

Impact of variable hydrostatic pressure and intermittent operation on filtration performance and biofouling layer in gravity-driven membrane system for practical decentralized water supply

Wenlu Liu,Yanling Yang,Zedong Lu,Taoran Li,Xing Li,Yazhou Sun

The gravity-driven membrane (GDM) systems offer a promising solution for decentralized drinking water supply due to its low maintenance and energy consumption. However, research on the practical application of GDM under variable hydrostatic pressure (variable load) and intermittent operation conditions, particularly in response to high-turbidity water, remains limited. This study investigates the long-term performance and characteristics of the biofouling layer of GDM under ultra-low variable hydrostatic pressure (20–60 mbar) and intermittent operation (8–12 h) conditions in practical decentralized water supply. The results indicate that the membrane flux (1.9–6.0 L∙m −2 ∙h −1 , LMH) remained relatively stable despite variations in gravity-driven pressure (ΔP). Long-term operation of GDM can stably remove turbidity and potential pathogens from raw water. The total protein/polysaccharide ratios of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the biofouling layer were below 0.50, reducing contaminant adhesion on the membrane surface. The 0.2–0.4 μm transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) fraction might be crucial for biofouling layer formation. The key species, belong to Proteobacteria and Patescibacteria , significantly alleviated membrane fouling by degrading polysaccharide and proteins in biofouling layer. Comammox Nitrospira were significantly enriched, contributing to efficient nitrification. GDM with variable load maintained a stable flux of 2.2–5.2 LMH under high-turbidity water conditions (300–1200 NTU), and simple forward flushing combined with sludge discharge can quickly restore ΔP. Overall, the variable load GDM system effectively manages membrane fouling and maintains stable filtration performance through the combined effects of variable load and intermittent operation, ensuring long-term and low-maintenance operation for decentralized water supply.

Salt-resistant wood-based solar steam generator with top-down water supply for high-yield and long-term desalination of seawater and brine water

Chen Hu,Wei Li,Hao-Yu Zhao,Changjun Li,Zai-Yuan Ma,Longyun Hao,Yaokun Pang,Zhong-Zhen Yu,Xiaofeng Li

To realize high-yield and long-term desalination of seawater and high salinity water, salt-resistant wood-based solar steam generators with a special top-down water supply device are developed by delignification of balsa wood for enhancing its hydrophilicity followed by vacuum-assisted impregnation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and MXene nanosheets and lyophilization. Thanks to the incidental gain of environmental energy, the sufficient top-down water supply, the porous channels and intrinsic hydrophilicity of the delignified wood, and the efficient solar light absorption and solar-thermal energy conversion of the dispersed MXene nanosheets, the resultant PVA/MXene-decorated wood (WPM) solar-driven water evaporator achieves a water evaporation rate of as high as 4.31 kg m −2  h −1 under 1-sun irradiation. A superior solar-driven desalination rate of 3.83 kg m −2  h −1 is achieved during evaporating a brine water with 25 wt% of NaCl for 8 h. The sufficient top-down water supply dilutes the high concentration of brine on the WPM evaporator surface and drains it promptly, avoiding the salt deposition and hence achieving the performance stability during the long-term solar-driven desalination. The high evaporation efficiency and the satisfactory long-term salt-resistance are demonstrated by desalinating an aqueous solution of 15 wt% NaCl over 100 h under 1-sun irradiation with an exceptional average evaporation rate of 4.24 kg m −2  h −1 .

Cost-effective and salt-resistant spongy hydrogel with strengthened Hofmeister effect for accelerated solar-driven evaporation in brine

Ying Chen,Jiaxin Duan,Jiahui Yu,Dezhan Ye,Yanhu Zhan,Xiancai Jiang

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation represents a promising strategy for desalination, but improving evaporation performance in seawater is challenging. Reducing the evaporative enthalpy is an effective method to solve this issue. Herein, a highly hydratable spongy hydrogel (SPC) obtained based on the Hofmeister effect is reported. The SPC evaporator in seawater demonstrated a reduced evaporation enthalpy of 1537 J/g, achieving an impressive evaporation rate of 4.01 kg m −2  h −1 , which is higher than that in pure water (3.82 kg m −2  h −1 ). Further research found that, benefiting from the Hofmeister effect, Cl − ions in brine inhibited the hydrogel crystallinity, increased the IW content, significantly reduced the evaporation enthalpy, and thus accelerated the evaporation rat in seawater. Furthermore, the hierarchically porous structure of the spongy hydrogel facilitates rapid water supply and mass transfer, promoting the diffusion/return of salt ions and preventing salt crystal accumulation. The long-term desalination test demonstrated that the SPC evaporator possesses strong salt resistance. This work provides new insights for designing cost-effective and salinity-resistant solar evaporators to address the challenges posed by water crises.

Optimized Water Supply in a Solar Evaporator for Simultaneous Freshwater Production and Salt Recycle

Zhi Yang,Dawei Li,Kaijie Yang,Lei Chen,Jian Wang,Xiaoying Zhu,Baoliang Chen

Solar desalination has shown great potential in alleviating global water scarcity. However, the trade-off between energy efficiency and salt rejection remains a challenge, restricting its practical applications. In this study, we report a three-dimensional nitrocellulose membrane-based evaporator featuring a high evaporation rate (1.5 kg m–2 h–1) and efficient salt precipitation at the edges. Additionally, the salt is isolated from the photothermal area of the evaporator and falls automatically with a salt recovery rate of 97 g m–2 h–1 in brine with 10 wt % salt content. The distinctive performance is attributed to the precise water supply control, which was adjusted by changing the resistance force and driven force in the evaporator. With a high evaporation rate, stable performance, and specific salt recovery ability, this solar evaporation structure holds great potential in water desalination and resource recovery.

Teardrop-Shaped 3D Solar Evaporator with Multiscale Biomimetic Water-Supply Structures for Highly Efficient Seawater Desalination

Kunzhang Xu,Yun Wang,Zhuoyuan Zhang,Xiufeng Li,Yuxiang Yi,Shizhou Lu,Bo Song

Increasing the vertical water supply height and effective evaporation area is crucial to designing high-performance 3D solar evaporators. To achieve the purpose, a teardrop-shaped 3D evaporator with multiple biomimetic water supply structures is developed. The teardrop-shaped configuration not only greatly increases the effective evaporation area but also significantly improves the environmental energy utilization efficiency. The cactus-inspired water supply channels at the bottom greatly increase the vertical water supply capacity, thereby providing a foundation for enlarging the effective evaporation area. Compared with the conical evaporator with the same height and projected area, the teardrop-shaped evaporator demonstrates 50% of reduction in water supply time and 40% of increase in effective evaporation area. Additionally, the top conical structure enables localized salt crystallization, thereby achieving stable and continuous long-term desalination and resource recovery without liquid discharge. The optimization of the water supply structure and hydrophilic coating is resulted in the impressive evaporation performance (3.73 kg m −2 h −1 ) and environmental energy efficiency (202.7%). The teardrop-shaped evaporator demonstrates excellent adaptability and durability in desalination and wastewater treatment, particularly in conditions involving high salinity and strong acids. Environmental and economic assessments reveal the good economic affordability and environmental friendliness of the teardrop-shaped evaporator.

To close or open the tank input water valve: Secondary water-supply systems with double tanks will induce a higher microbial risk

Dong Hu,Wenfang Lin,Jie Zeng,Heng Zhang,Yating Wei,Xin Yu

Secondary water supply systems (SWSSs) are widely used to supply water to high-rise households in urban residential buildings. A special mode of double tanks with one used while another was spared was noted in SWSSs, which would facilitate microbial growth due to longer water stagnation in the spare tank. There are limited studies on the microbial risk of water samples in such SWSSs. In this study, the input water valves of the operational SWSSs consisting of double tanks were artificially closed and opened on time. Propidium monoazide-qPCR and high-throughput sequencing were performed to systematically investigate the microbial risks in water samples. After closing the tank input water valve, it may take several weeks to replace the bulk water in the spare tank. The residual chlorine concentration in the spare tank decreased by up to 85 % within 2–3 days compared with that in the input water. The microbial communities in the spare and used tank water samples clustered separately. High bacterial 16S rRNA gene abundance and pathogens-like sequences were detected in the spare tanks. Most antibiotic-resistant genes (11/15) in the spare tanks showed an increase in their relative abundance. Moreover, when both tanks within one SWSS were in use, the water quality of the used tank water samples deteriorated to varying degrees. Overall, running SWSSs with double tanks will reduce the replacement rate of water in one storage tank, and consumers who use taps served by the presented SWSSs may have a higher microbial risk.

Intensifying low-pressure membrane performance based on bio-cake layers coupled with pre-loading layers

Xuesong Ye,Jun Nan,Xinhao Hu,Zhencheng Ge,Fangmin Wu,Bohan Liu,Meng Chen,Li He,Daliang Xu

Low-pressure ultrafiltration membranes (LPM) are a promising technology for the decentralized water supply. However, currently available ultrafiltration membranes cannot easily achieve the simultaneous removal of ferrous iron (Fe 2+ ), manganese (Mn 2+ ), and ammonia (NH 4 + ). In this study, LPM coupled with three pre-loading layers consisting of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) powder, powdered activated carbon (PAC), and zeolite powder, labeled M-LPM, C-LPM, and Z-LPM, respectively, in order to improve the effluent quality and shorten the ripening time without reducing the stable flux. The results show that the stable flux of M-LPM and C-LPM increased, while decreased for Z-LPM due to the viscosity of the pre-loading layer material. The ripening time of the three LPM systems was shortened, with M-LPM showing excellent Mn 2+ removal throughout filtration, while Z-LPM exhibited notable adsorption of Mn 2+ and NH 4 + . CLSM analysis revealed that the biological reactions occurred intensely in the upper area of the bio-cake layer. Based on the analysis of key enzyme genes, the microbial pollutant removal pathways were constructed. In addition, the optimal loading curve of the M-LPM pre-loading layer was established. Overall, the enhanced performance highlights the feasibility and potential of applying the LPM strategy in decentralized water supplies.
