Hydrogels with conductive properties hold significant promise in the realm of flexible electronics, owing to their pliability, outstanding conductivity, and diverse functionalities. Nevertheless, the majority of conductive hydrogels are prone to being brittle and easily damaged; as such, they are not adapt to cold environments, which seriously hinders their practical applications. Therefore, hydrogels that possess both conductivity and anti-freezing, as well as moisturizing, capabilities have garnered considerable interest, and these hydrogels can work stably in harsh environments. Phytic acid (PA), which mainly exists in plant seeds, is a kind of natural compound widely existing in nature that can be recycled; it provides electrical conductivity and anti-freezing to hydrogels. Here, a highly conductive hydrogel with excellent anti-freezing and moisturizing capabilities was prepared by incorporating PA into a polyacrylamide/gelatin hydrogel. The incorporation of PA endowed the hydrogel with an excellent conductivity of 5.8 S·cm−1. In addition, robust hydrogen bonding was formed between water and phytic acid molecules, and the hydrogel demonstrated remarkable anti-freezing and water retention. On this basis, hydrogels can be used for human winter sports sensing and low-temperature environmental alarm devices to provide faster rescue. This study provides a novel method for the development of hydrogels with low-temperature stability, and provides a revelation for the application of anti-freezing hydrogels in icy and snowy environments.

Conductive hydrogels with anti-freezing and moisturizing properties have attracted huge attention for application in flexible electronics, which can work stably in harsh environments. However, it is challenging and urgent to enhance the environmental adaptability of hydrogels, while maintaining high conductivity. Here, a highly conductive hydrogel featuring remarkable freezing resistance and moisture-holding ability is fabricated via incorporating phytic acid (PA) into polyacrylamide/chitosan hydrogels. The addition of PA not only endows the hydrogels with a marvelous conductivity of 0.105 S cm−1 due to the ionization of PA, but also promotes their antibacterial properties against Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria. Besides, based on the strong hydrogen bonding between PA and water molecules, the hydrogels exhibit excellent flexibility and great conductivity (0.041 S cm−1) at −20 °C and could function well after storage for 15 days under ambient conditions. More importantly, the hydrogels can serve as reliable electrodes for electrocardiography (ECG) signal detection. Meanwhile, with the imperceptible strain perceivability (0.1% of strain) and a high gauge factor of 10.87, the hydrogel wearable sensors are capable of precisely monitoring and recognizing both drastic and subtle human motions under diverse working environments. This work provides a novel and promising method for developing flexible wearable electronics with environmental stability.

This study aims to develop an excellent pharmaceutical excipient based on crosslinked hydroxyethyl chitosan (G-HECTS(GA)), designed to exhibit high intrinsic viscosity and superior moisture absorption and retention properties for wound healing applications. Hydroxyethyl chitosan (HECTS) was synthesized from chitosan through a derivatization reaction with bromoethanol under alkaline conditions, achieving a maximum solubility of 6.8 ± 0.2 g/100 g water. The HECTS was further crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) to produce G-HECTS(GA). Structural characterization of the product was performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Key parameters, including crosslinker dosage, reaction time, temperature, and stirring speed, were optimized to evaluate their effects on intrinsic viscosity. The physicochemical properties and wound healing efficacy of G-HECTS(GA) were systematically assessed in a rat wound model. Under optimal conditions (35°C, 25 μL GA, 18 h reaction time), the crosslinked product demonstrated an intrinsic viscosity of 1870 ± 70 mL/g, a moisture retention rate of 39% ± 3% , and a moisture absorption rate of 39.1% ± 0.7% . G-HECTS(GA) rapidly formed a stable film on wound surfaces, effectively absorbing exudates and promoting wound healing. The material exhibited excellent stability, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity, along with significant anti-inflammatory effects. These properties highlight the potential of G-HECTS(GA) as a high-performance pharmaceutical excipient for hemostatic spray formulations, offering a promising solution for mucosal wound repair and related biomedical applications.

Facial mask substrates commonly used in skincare are often considered unhealthy and environmentally unfriendly due to their composition of premoistened nonwovens containing various preservatives. This study aims to address this issue by developing a preservative-free degradable aerogel made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/pullulan (PUL) using a unidirectional freeze-drying method. The aerogels had ordered three-dimensional porous structures and exhibited desirable mechanical properties. They were soft and flexible in both dry and wet states, and their Young's moduli were comparable to that of human skin. The aerogels had high porosity, ranging from 93.0 % to 95.1 %, and exhibited a high water absorption rate and water absorption capacity (ranging from 7.5 g/g to 10.1 g/g). After 30 min of water evaporation, the aerogels showed excellent moisture retention, ranging from 88 % to 93 %. Additionally, the PVA/PUL aerogel efficiently loaded and released active ingredients, such as rapidly releasing ascorbic acid (> 90 % within 30 min). These findings suggest that the PVA/PUL aerogel has potential as a material for facial mask substrates.

This study focused on offering relatively systematic study on transdermal behaviors, bioactivity and mechanism of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and finding out whether they could be used as a potential natural skin care medium with promoted release performance. A series of new bioactive DESs with potential effects (including 4-methoxy salicylic acid-betaine, lactic acid-betaine, malic acid-betaine, malic acid-choline chloride, malic acid- l -carnitine, mandelic acid-betaine, phytic acid-betaine) were synthesized and their permeation behaviors were all investigated by using bionic and mice skins. It showed that the transdermal releasing process could be mainly controlled by both concentration and viscosity of specific DESs, and 1000 mg/mL phytic acid-betaine (the molar ratio of 3:1) aqueous solution exhibited the highest penetration rate and cumulative release amount (54.5 mg/cm 2 ). Then the influence of phytic acid-betaine (3:1) on the tested transdermal materials were evaluated by multiple characterizations including porosity, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetry (TG), and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), etc., and no obvious damage was observed on the skin surface. Furthermore, no composition change of phytic acid-betaine was obviously found before and after transdermal process. Besides reported moisture retention (hygroscopicity), phytic acid-betaine variants showed strong antioxidant activity, calcium complexation ability and little irritation to human skin. Especially, related bioactive oil-in-DES microemulsion was prepared to broaden their application forms for the first time. Furthermore, the intrinsic rules between viscosity and hydrogen bond were explored by quantum chemistry calculations to clarify the difference in their permeation behaviors, and the interactions between DES components and tyrosinase were evaluated by molecular docking. As the result, above DESs played the dual roles of active ingredients and self-promoting penetration agents.

Conductive hydrogels have attracted significant attention in the area of wearable pressure sensors due to their mechanical flexibility, conductivity and self-healing capability. At subzero temperatures , water-based conductive hydrogels unavoidably lose their elasticity and conductivity which limits their practical usages at low temperatures. However, traditional conductive hydrogels are short of moisturizing and anti-freezing ability due to the limitation of pure water solvent, which greatly restricts their application in extreme environments. In this study, an anti-freezing and moisturizing conductive double network organohydrogel was prepared by incorporating thioctic acid (TA) with polyvinyl alcohol-borate (PVA-PB) in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that were dispersed in water (H 2 O) and ethylene glycol (EG). The as-prepared PVA-B-TA-CNTs organohydrogel presented outstanding anti-freezing performance (−60 o C), long-term moisturizing property (30 days), excellent stability (400 cycles) and fascinating conductive sensitivity (S = 0.625 kPa −1 ). The occurrence of dynamic covalent disulfide bonds and noncovalent hydrogen bonds endow the conductive organohydrogels with brilliant remoldability and self-healing ability, which are significant for practical applications. These remarkable advantages make PVA-B-TA-CNTs organohydrogel to have enormous potential in the application of wearable and flexible pressure sensors, human-healthy monitor, and intelligence devices.

The objective of this study is to broaden the application of xylan as moisture-absorption/retention biomaterials by grafting polyethylene glycol (PEG) on xylan backbone. Ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Amim]Cl) and 4,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate are used as reaction media and coupling reagent, respectively. FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, and gel permeation chromatography analyses indicate the successful occurrence of the grafting reaction. Thermogravimetric analysis/derivative thermogravimetry indicates that the thermal stability of xylan increases after the grafting of the PEG side chains. With an increase of the degree of substitution of xylan- g -PEG, the molecular weight ( M w ) of PEG side chains (1000 and 5000 g mol −1 ), and the relative humidity of environment, the moisture-absorption/retention ratio of xylan- g -PEG increases. To evaluate the biodegradability/biocompatibility of this promising material, the ratio of biochemical oxygen demand to chemical oxygen demand of xylan- g -PEG and the cytotoxicity are tested on the samples. The results indicate that PEG-modified xylan has great potential as moisture-absorption/retention biomaterials.

Dual physical network hydrogel possesses robust energy dissipation mechanism. However, the demanding conditions of the second monomer radical polymerization aren't benefit for the dispersion of conductive filler. Moreover, the stable and sensitive response under extreme environment puts forward the requirements for mechanical, antifreezing and moisture retention properties. Herein, a dual physical networks hydrogel (polyacrylic acid-chitosan-graphene/glycerol, noted as PAA-CS-G/Gly) was prepared rapidly (<0.5 h) without chemical cross-linking agents at room temperature. The rapid gelation, ionic coordination of Ag + together with certain viscosity chitosan promoted the dispersion of graphene. PAA-CS-G/Gly showed ultra-stretchable properties (~2500%), good toughness (3.11 MJ/m 3 ), breaking strength (0.27 MPa) and fatigue resistance. PAA-CS-G/Gly had good adhesion properties, outstanding tolerance for freezing (−80°C) and moisture retention. More importantly, PAA-CS-G/Gly strain sensor had excellent sensitivity (GF, up to 9.449) at 300% ~ 900% strain. It could sensitively detect human joint movements and even subtle activities such as talking and swallowing. PAA-CS-G/Gly hydrogel is expected to adhere directly to the human body for flexible monitoring of human size movement under extreme environmental conditions.

Conductive hydrogels are attracting increasing attention for applications in wearable and flexible strain sensors, due to their excellent conductivity and mechanical properties. However, conventional conductive hydrogels lack anti-freezing and moisturizing properties and thus cannot be used as sensors under relatively harsh conditions, due to the use of pure water as the dispersion medium. In addition, conventional hydrogels cannot generate electric power, which is an essential requirement for practical applications in hydrogel-based strain sensors. Herein, a conductive hydrogel was fabricated by incorporating tannic acid–carbon nanotubes (TA–CNTs) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix containing a water–glycerol dispersion medium. The TA–CNT–glycerol–PVA (TCGP) hydrogel possessed excellent anti-freezing properties (−30 °C), long-term moisturizing performance (10 days), and outstanding sensitivity. Moreover, the TCGP hydrogel could be used not only as a strain sensor for the detection of various human motions, but also as an electrode for detecting human electrophysiological signals even in a relatively harsh environment. More importantly, a TCGP hydrogel-based moist-electric generator could generate electric power from moisture flow. These outstanding advantages highlight the great potential of the TCGP hydrogel in wearable flexible strain sensors, bioelectrodes, and next-generation green energy-generating devices.

To optimize the control of coal dust by a chemical dust suppressor, a new starch copolymer was synthesized by grafting itaconic acid-acrylic acid copolymer onto corn starch. Infrared spectroscopy was used to analyze the functional groups of the copolymer, and the adhesion performance of the copolymer was measured with coal dust adsorption experiments. The results showed that the characteristic absorption peak of the six-membered sugar ring of the starch had disappeared, indicating that the grafting of the itaconic acid-acrylic acid copolymer to the starch was successful. Surface adsorption experiments combined with molecular dynamics simulations verified the adsorption of the starch copolymer on the coal dust as well as the wrapping of the copolymer around the coal dust. After spraying for 72 h, the moisture content of the starch copolymer was still >4%, demonstrating its high moisture retention. The results of this study can be used as a reference and can provide a new method for suppressing coal dust pollution.

Hydrogel is a promising material for wearable electronics due to its good mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and body adaptability. However, subzero freezing and water loss under high temperature or prolonged placement are great challenges for hydrogels. Here, polyacrylic acid / poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PAA/PEDOT: PSS) ionogels were designed by entangling PAA and PEDOT: PSS chains with each other in a binary solvent system of water and ionic liquid (IL) and chemical cross-linking by N, N’ -methylene bisacrylamide (MBA). It has excellent mechanical properties (8.3 kPa, > 500 %), skin-adapted Young's modulus (<10 kPa), high conductivity (8.06 S·m −1 ), and strong adhesion (13.3 kPa). Ionogel has a sensitive response as a sensor (GF = 2.08, 0–200 %; GF = 3.64, 200–400 %; GF = 4.58, 400–510 %). Especially, the freeze-resistance and long-term moisturizing properties make ionogels exhibit long-lasting and robust utility. As a scalable application platform, we demonstrate the potential applications of this novel ionogel as a body-conformable electronic product in a series of conceptual demonstrations, including full range of human motion response, human–machine interaction (HMI), temperature signal detection and TENG device assembly.

The dried root of Panax notoginseng is a medicinal and food ingredient. Panax notoginseng polysaccharides (PNPs) have physicochemical properties, which have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to identify a method to separate the PNP fractions and investigate their activities. PNPs were prepared from roots by hot water extraction, deproteinization, and decolorization. PNP20, PNP40, and PNP60 fractions were isolated through stepwise ethanol precipitation at 20%, 40%, and 60% concentrations, respectively. The three polysaccharide fractions were characterized using chromatography, spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis, and their moisture retention, antioxidant, and tyrosinase-inhibition properties were evaluated. Monosaccharide composition analysis showed that the three PNPs contained mannose (Man), galacturonic acid (GalA), glucose (Glc), galactose (Gal), and arabinose (Ara) in different molar ratios. HPGPC analysis demonstrated that the polysaccharides precipitated with higher ethanol concentrations had lower molecular weights (Mw). Furthermore, it was observed that all PNPs have certain moisturizing and hygroscopic properties and antioxidant activities, with PNP60 showing better antioxidant properties and a competitive mixture of hygroscopic properties and tyrosinase inhibition. The chemical composition and structural characteristics of PNPs could affect their functional attributes. PNP60 has the potential to be a moisturizer and antioxidant and could be used in the development of cosmetic ingredients.
