Hydrogel epidermis electrodes have demonstrated remarkable potential for stable electrophysiological signal acquisition in the field of intelligent prostheses. However, current hydrogel electrodes face challenges in providing on-demand antibacterial effects due to dynamic skin conditions, such as sweating, which may induce skin inflammation, thus limiting their practical applications. Herein, an active on-demand antibacterial hydrogel electrode is prepared by encapsulating Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) into the hydrogel electrode based on the strategy of flora balance. The encapsulated S. epidermidis metabolizes nutrients from sweat to produce antibacterial substances, achieving an 82% inhibition rate against Staphylococcus aureus over a 24-h period. With on-demand antibacterial properties, low interfacial impedance, and strong adhesion, the hydrogel electrode enables the acquisition of various high-quality electrophysiological signals with a signal-to-noise ratio of 22.2 dB after 12 h of attachment, much higher than that of commercial hydrogel electrodes. When combined with machine learning models to decode electromyographic signals, the electrode system achieves the high gesture recognition accuracy of 95%. Furthermore, the stable signal acquisition enabled by the antibacterial hydrogel electrode facilitates real-time wireless control of robotic hands, providing a robust technical platform for intelligent prosthetic applications.

Stretchable electronics exhibit compliant mechanical properties for intimate interactions with the human body beyond conventional technologies. Among various systems, electronic textiles that combine electronics with daily garments offer exciting opportunities for wearable applications. The rough surface of the textile structure, however, presents practical challenges towards high-performance electronics. In this study, a breathable and stretchable form of electronic system based on elastomeric nanofibre textiles is reported. The platform employs electrospun nanofibres and silver nanowires to create functional devices, which are termed as electronic nanotextiles. The network architecture offers high permeability to water vapor and comfort-perceptions for epidermal application over the long term. The practical suitability of e-nanotextiles is demonstrated by a multichannel electromyogram-sensing sleeve for measuring muscle activations during hand motions. The developments may stimulate new applications in healthcare monitoring, robotic prosthetics, and textile integrated electronics.

Artificial skins with sensing ability have great potential in applications of wearable devices and soft robotics. Inspired by the functions of human skins including sensing stimuli via electrical signal and bruising for injury indication, an ionic conductive and mechanochromic organohydrogel is synthesized and demonstrated as ionic skin (I-skin). The gel consisting of mechanochromophore cross-linked micelles is mechanically robust, stretchable, and deformation durable with minor hysteresis, and it also displays good solvent retention. The change of relative resistance during elongation and compression suggests a high sensitivity. An optical change from pale yellow to bruise-like blue-purple color is observed under a large deformation. The ionic conductive organohydrogel as I-skin is attached to different parts of the human body with movements mimicking various body-bruising scenarios, demonstrating successful perception and visualization of mechanical stimuli. The work vividly presents a strain sensor with the functions of injury visualization and damage warning for mechanical impacts. The I-skin can be potentially used in the applications including prosthetic devices, wearable electronics, and intelligent robots.

Nowadays, hydrogels have been intensively explored due to their promising potential application in bioelectronics. However, the lack of self-healing performance limits the lifespan and stability of materials. Here, a stretchable, self-healing and conductive hydrogel is prepared via physical crosslinking including hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic association and complexation effect, endowing the hydrogels with stretchability of 1150%, tensile strength of 112 kPa, flexibility and puncture resistance. Besides, the hydrogels possess extraordinary conductive property with a conductivity of 0.0720 S cm − 1 and exhibit stable changes of resistance signals with a gauge factor of 2.506. Meanwhile, the hydrogels also exhibit adhesive performance due to the presence of catechol groups, and the maximum peeling adhesive strength could reach 23 N m − 1 . It is envisioned that the highly stretchable, self-healable, adhesive and conductive hydrogels would widen the application as the flexible strain sensors for soft robots, artificial limb, movement-monitoring equipment.

Graphene and silver nanowires (AgNWs) are ideal fillers for conductive polymer composites, but they tend to aggregate in the polymer matrix due to the lack of surface functional groups and large specific surface area, which is hard for the polymer composites filled with them to reach their full potential. Here, ternary hybrids with multidimensional architectures including 3D polystyrene (PS) microspheres, 2D reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheets, and 1D AgNWs are obtained using a simple, but effective, electrostatic attraction strategy. The electrical conductivity (136.25 S m–1) of the ternary hybrid conductive nanocomposites filled with RGO and AgNWs is significantly higher than that of the nanocomposites containing only RGO (3.255 S m–1) at the same total filler loading due to the synergistic effect of RGO and AgNWs. The conductive nanocomposites simultaneously present a low percolation threshold of 0.159 vol % and a maximum electrical conductivity of 1230 S m–1 at 3.226 vol % filler loading. Moreover, a flexible electronic skin based on the multidimensional ternary hybrids is presented, and it exhibits large stretchability, high gauge factor, and excellent cyclic working durability, which is successfully demonstrated in monitoring prosthetic finger motions.

Tough hydrogels with the ability to be repeatedly processed into various shapes as thermoplastics are highly desired in advanced medical devices and tissue engineering. Here, we have developed a kind of versatile supramolecular hydrogel with a network cross-linked by double hydrogen bonds from poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide) (PNAGA). The resulting PNAGA-30 hydrogels (30 wt% solid content) are tough, re-processable, and recyclable similar to thermoplastics. The hydrogels in the form of fragments can be easily re-processed into various shapes including sheet, filament, cylinder and other complex shapes by using simple stamping and injection methods. The mechanical properties of the re-programed hydrogels are comparable to the properties of the original hydrogels. The re-processability and robust mechanical properties of the PNAGA hydrogels are promising for practical applications in soft materials, tissue engineering and wearable devices. Furthermore, the PNAGA-30&LiCl ionic hydrogels can be fabricated by simply compositing LiCl into thermoplastic hydrogels. The PNAGA-30&LiCl hydrogels can function as multifunctional strain sensors to monitor large human movements and tiny vibrations, thereby showing great application potential in robotics, biomedical prosthetics, personal healthcare monitoring and so on.

The arrival of surgical robots in high-end medical equipment is a landmark, and the realization of tactile sensation a major challenge in this important cutting-edge research field. Aiming to address this issue, we present ultra-sensitive ionic electronic skin in the form of flexible capacitive pressure sensors, which incorporate multistage bionic microstructures in ion gels for the purpose of monitoring the delicate operations of surgical robots. Significantly, the ionic skin exhibits an ultra-high sensitivity of 9484.3 kPa−1 (<15 kPa), and the sensitivity remains higher than 235 kPa−1 in the wide range of 15–155 kPa. The device has also achieved a detection limit as low as 0.12 Pa or, equivalently, 0.31 mg, fast response within 24 ms, and high robustness (loading/unloading for 5000 cycles without fatigue). The sensor facilitates the challenging task of tele-operated robotic threading, which exceeds the human tactile perception limit when threading a needle. We have also confirmed that ionic skin can be used in robot-assisted invasive surgery, such as incision/resection of tissues and suturing of wounds, providing tactile information to surgeons to improve operation success rates. The flexible ionic skin is capable of conforming to the various shapes of robotic manipulators, thus has great promise for applications in robotic dexterous manipulation, prosthetics and human–machine interfaces.

Conductive hydrogels with stretchability, breathability and long-term stability have attracted increasing attention for the applications in interactive wearable devices , artificial prosthetics, and intelligent robots. In this paper, a stretchable (up to 254 %), well breathable (vapor transmission up to 1.231×10 −2 g·cm −2 ·h −1 ), and stable conductive (1.21 S/m) hydrogel films (Gel/PPy/Ag) was prepared by gel-template immersion method using gelatin as gel networks, polypyrrole (PPy) and silver (Ag) as conductive reinforcing filler and Span 80 as emulsion template. The film could maintain flexibility and conductivity after stored in an environment of –20 °C or 25 °C for 20 days. The excellent frost resistance and water retention ensured the practical application of the porous organic hydrogel film with environmental adaptability and long-term stability. The strain sensor made from the Gel/PPy/Ag films presented excellent sensitivity (GF reached 2.034), good durability, fast response (0.34 s) and recovery ability (0.36 s). It monitored weak and vigorous human motions effectively and sensitively. The Gel/PPy/Ag flexible electrodes realized the real-time sensitive detection of human Electrocardiogram (ECG) and electromyogram (EMG) signals and precision sensing control of the manipulator arm. The Gel/PPy/Ag hydrogel and the prepared flexible electronic devices have broad application prospects in the field of health monitoring, motion monitoring, operation control and other soft electronic devices.

Artificial electric skin, which is capable of strongly adhering to different parts of human bodies and precisely detect different types of human motions, shows great promise for biomedical prosthetics, human/machine interfaces, wearable devices and soft robotics. In this study, biocompatible ionic gels with shape-adaptability and skin-adhering are produced through in situ polymerizing (3-acrylamidophenyl) boronic acid and acrylamide in the presence of chitosan containing catechol groups. The chemical cross-linkers are capable of modulating their elasticity, toughness and stretching tolerance. The reversible cross-linkers of H-bonding and dynamic covalent bonds endow the gels not only with strong adhering strength on different surfaces (including skin) and rapid self-healing in minutes, but also with large stretchability (e.g., 12–200 times of tensile length) and plasticity for shape-adaptability on irregular surfaces. Thus, by introducing mussel-inspired catechol groups into biomass-based macromolecules, a novel type of artificial ionic skin is designed with high sensitivity in combination with mechanical stretchability and bio-compatibility. They will promise great potential as (but not limited to) the skin-friendly sensor to detect various human motions with high accuracy and repeatability.
