Detectors with cost-effective, polarization-sensitive, and integrative functionalities are required for next-generation ultraviolet (UV) detection systems. Low-dimensional semiconductor materials have potential for optical device applications, especially polarization detection, because of their excellent polarization characteristics. Therefore, ultralong ZnO microwires, ∼0.5 to 1 cm long, were prepared using the chemical vapor-phase epitaxy method, making it easy to build photoelectric devices. The emission polarization of the ZnO microwires excited by circularly polarized light was ∼0.60, indicating a high-anisotropy optical property. Their UV-polarization spectrum and photoelectric detection were determined. When the ZnO microwire was excited by linearly polarized UV light, the intensity of photoluminescence (PL) changed periodically with the polarization direction of the UV light. The PL polarization of the ZnO microwire for linear UV detection was ∼0.12. For a ZnO microwires photoelectric device, the photocurrent anisotropy ratio reached 1.28 when the polarization angle of the incident UV light changed. These results suggest that the obtained ultralong ZnO microwires have the potential for application in future UV-polarization detection systems.

Polarized light detection can effectively identify the difference between the polarization information on the target and the background, which is of great significance for detection in complex natural environments and/or extreme weather. Generally, polarized light detection inevitably relies on anisotropic structures of photodetector devices, while organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites are ideal for anisotropic patterning due to their simple and efficient preparation by solution method. Compared to patterned thin films, patterned arrays of aligned one-dimensional (1D) perovskite nanowires (PNWAs) have fewer grain boundaries and lower defect densities, making them well suited for high-performance polarization-sensitive photodetectors. Here, we fabricated PNWAs crystallographically aligned with variable line widths and alignment densities employing CD-ROM and DVD-ROM grating pattern template-confined growth (TCG) methods. The photodetectors constructed from MAPbI3 PNWAs achieved responsivity of 35.01 A/W, detectivity of 6.85 × 1013 Jones, and fast response with a rise time of 172 μs and fall time of 114 μs. They were successfully applied to high-performance polarization detection with a polarization ratio of 1.81, potentially applicable in polarized light detection systems.

Full-Stokes polarization detection, with high integration and portability, offers an efficient path toward next-gen multi-information optoelectronic systems. Nevertheless, current techniques relying on optical filters create rigid and bulky configurations, limiting practicality. Here, a flexible, filter-less full-Stokes polarimeter featuring a uniaxial-oriented chiral perovskite film is first reported. It is found that, the strategic manipulation of the surfactant-mediated Marangoni effect during blade coating, is crucial for guiding an equilibrious mass transport to achieve oriented crystallization. Through this approach, the obtained uniaxial-oriented chiral perovskite films inherently possess anisotropy and chirality, and thereby with desired sensitivity to both linearly polarized light and circularly polarized light vectors. The uniaxial-oriented crystalline structure also improves photodetection, achieving a specific detectivity of 5.23 × 10 13 Jones, surpassing non-oriented devices by 10×. The as-fabricated flexible polarimeters enable accurate capture of full-Stokes polarization without optical filters, exhibiting slight detection errors for the Stokes parameters: Δ S 1 = 9.2%, Δ S 2 = 8.6%, and Δ S 3 = 6.5%, approaching the detection accuracy of optics-filter polarimeters. This proof of concept also demonstrates applications in matrix polarization imaging.

Chiral carbon dots (CCDs) combined with outstanding photoluminescence and unique chirality have become intriguing carbon-based nanomaterials, however, the realization of the optical activity in both ground and excited states remains a great challenge. To overcome this difficulty, multicolor CCDs have been synthesized by changing surface oxidation states and P atom doping via solvothermal route, which emit unusual near-ultraviolet, and blue, yellow and red fluorescence with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) of 28.99%, 22.55%, 84.63%, and 75.73%, respectively. Benefiting from the excellent luminescence of CCDs and chiral environment of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), a series of CCDs@CNCs composite films were produced by matrix-assisted method. The electrostatic, H-bonds and vdWs interactions are found to drive the formation of co-assembly and facilitate the chiral transfer and amplify between CNCs and chromophores. Thus, the CCDs@CNCs films display bright and multicolor right-handed circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with extremely high luminescence dissymmetry factor ( g lum ) values of −0.24 to −0.90. The synergy of intense g lum and high efficiency of multicolor composite films endow them with a potential for visual polarization detection. This research provides inspiration and feasibility for constructing CPL-active materials in co-assembly system and harvesting high g lum value.

The detection of the polarization states of light is of great significance for the analysis of biological tissue morphologies, image display systems and sensors. Although organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite crystals have excellent photoelectric properties, which make them very suitable for the preparation of photodetectors, their applications in polarized light detection are hindered by their isotropy and instability. Here, we solved this problem by fabricating a stable 2D layered Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite into anisotropic micro-wire arrays with a template-confined method. Based on this anisotropic structure, a high-performance photodetector with a dark current as low as 10−12 A, high responsivity of 3.5 A W−1, detectivity exceeding 1 × 1015 Jones and a fast response with a rise time of 4.1 ms and a decay time of 3.3 ms was achieved and successfully applied for high-performance polarization detection. More importantly, the device maintained a superior performance even after being exposed to an environment of 60% relative humidity without encapsulation.
